The Greens is lovely and they have a new pet park on street 6 I believe. I saw the ad in our building. I want to go and check it out We checked it out today (but without our dog!!), it's not very big but better than nothing! There are a few activities for dogs, not sure how good ours will be but worth a go! We have a small dog and find The Greens very easy, we live in The Links and there are numerous 'walks' around the lakes, in front of the buildings etc. Lots of dog poo bins too!

I would avoid this scenario, one of my colleagues caught a cold last year when the bank arrived to repossess the apartment a few days after she moved in, it is very risky and you can not protect yourself as subletting is illegal here.

I know of people who share a similar name to people who are 'persona non grata' (for whatever reason) and they can not get an eGate card as those names are flagged on the airport system. In this day and age you can never truly disappear, think about the biometrics we have all done for our ID cards, they have blood samples from our medical blood tests, the only thing they are missing is saliva!!

Who knows if these debts will ever be wiped clean? If people who left actually tried to repay what they owe it would be the honourable thing to do but if they don't then they can live in fear of ever passing through The Gulf ! Everyone's expenses are different and vary according to where you chose to live and how you get to work etc. I suggest trying to find an apartment where the cooling (AC) is included - we live in The Greens and all the blocks here include it, so then you will have Dewa, made up of housing fee (5% of the annual rent collected monthly so a twelth of this amount) plus water and electricity consumption, realisically AED 1000 per month should be sufficient. TV/Internet - around AED500-700. Peoples grocery bills vary enormously, do a big shop in one of the cheaper stores once a month (Lulu's,Carrefour, Union Coop, Geant) and try not to buy too much in Waitrose or Spinneys, as they are expensive. Yes you will have to run a car, arrange child care etc. Pay deposits when you arrive (Dewa is AED1000, Phone, TV decoder around AED500), curtains and school uniforms also need to be budgeted but once you have survived the first few months things do settle down. Dubai isn't a cheap place to live but it isn't the most expensive either, rents are high but the metro, compared to London or New York, is cheap. I hope you and your hubby manage to find work and your plans come together.

Ladies im really sorry for jumping on this post when i dont have any advice for OP but i am just looking at some of the comments re work per month between me and my DH we will be earning approx 45,000 AED a month and reading this now im not sure its enough :( we have one little girl who will be going to year 1 and looking to get a 2 bed flat in dubai land for the first year. we arrive out in 2 weeks and can you all shed some light if we are punching way above out weight with this wage for 3 of us? You should be absolutely fine with this salary, it's good, assume up to 5k a month school fees, up to 15k a month for rent and perhaps another 2k for bills, so quite a good ammount left to pay for everything else.

I'm looking to change to a new provider from my current one who has almost doubled our premiums (nothing out of the ordinary in our claims over the past year). Any personal recommendations please? TIA When my DH turned 50 our health insurance premiums escalated, that was BUPA. Ask the landlord to accompany you to do Dewa and the Ejari, that way you should have more chance or getting them sorted out.

There are lots of hotels opening all the time here so I think your husband may be lucky finding a job here BUT whether he will be able to earn enough to sponsor you and pay for family accommodation is another question, most hotel jobs come with accommodation provided but only for the employee not their family, unless the employee is executive level.

You can sometimes get Dewa done with the SPA but only if the apartment is in an area where the title deeds have not been issued yet (for some reason) or in DIFC where there are no title deeds. Where is this apartment? I think DU want to see the Ejari contract and to get Ejari you need the Dewa connection notice and the title deed................

The only maids I have heard of who earn AED 3500 + have driving licenses and act as a family driver too. I am so glad I don't need a live in maid, I would be a useless boss! <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 02/08/2014</em>

This is very current problem for me, having fractured my ankle in June I am still immobile and relying upon a wheelchair to go anywhere. Wheelchairs are quite cheap to buy here, and I don't know of anywhere to hire one, go and look in Life Pharmacy on Al Wasl Rd, on the corner by Emirates NBD, they have quite a range (according to my DH who went). I find if I stick to new malls like MoE, Marina Mall etc. the disabled facilities are good, also top hotels like The Address, Marriott's are built to accommodate wheelchairs, although the mirror in the loo at The Address Marina is placed too high to see yourself! Getting in and out of cars and taxis has been easy and all the drivers have been very kind and helpful, in fact people everywhere have been amazing, the concierges in my building can't do enough for us and if the fire alarm goes off they know I will call them to check it is a false alarm as I couldn't get out of the building unaided! I am sure your brother will have a great holiday here, it will just take a little planning to get him about comfortably. Have a fun reunion! <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 02/08/2014</em>

The GEMS school will be able to do assessments when the kids arrive too, there will be school places about so don't worry, there are lots of new schools opening this Autumn. I think you may need to chillax and enjoy a few more weeks at home in nicer weather than we currently have here.

I would wait but do apply for school places for your children, even if they can't start on Day one of the new term, the school start dates vary a lot and I know some are not until the 2nd week in September. Have you had all your documents notarised/legalised/attested? This often takes time too.

All companies vary in how long their employment visas take, where I work they are very effiecient and generally from submitting the application we receive the visa within 7 working days, but I know some places take ages. You can work once your employment visa has been issued as your residency is essentially under process, to work on a visit visa is illegal. Most companies will not allow anyone to start until the visa is ready. You should not arrange your flights over here until your employment visa has been received. A company has to apply for the employment visa, these are usually online visas and valid for 2 months from issuance. When you get here you must then have a medical (chest xray and blood test) and the get the biometrics for your ID card done, then your passport will be submitted to the immigartion department by the company and your residency visa stamped into your passport (this takes 3-5 days normally). You can not begin the process of sponsoring your kids until your visa has been fully processed and in the case of non free-zone companies the labour card issued. However there is absolutely nothing to stop you applying for school places for your child(ren), in fact most people do this months before arriving, and lots of kids begin school here with just a visit visa - schools understand about visa laws and whilst they will nag you for a copy of the kids residency visa they will be happy to be told they are in process, provide a copy of your residency for the time being. You should not have to return to your home country if you do arrive on a visit visa, but it does cost the company a bit more to process your employment visa if you are already here. Most school days run from 7.30-2.30pm and until 1pm on Thursday. Some schools have kitchens and kids can buy lunches and snacks, but you always have the choice to send your child with a packed lunch and snacks. After school clubs are common here BUT they don't act as after school care as such because most classes or activities are only for an hour so you'd still need to pick up by 4pm, also not many schools offer these activities on a daily basis either. It is hard being a working mum here, many have to send their live in maid to pick up after school and I have friends who employ a driver as well, all to get the kids to/ from school. By the way in answer to another of your earlier questions - yes Irish driving licences are valid to get a UAE one, no need to take a test.

The problem is the car will have to be taken back to the country of origin, the Danish branch of the company will not be able to do anything with it! oh but any website i can check prices, thank you for info I would ask an international company like Avis/Hertz/Europcar to quote you, many hire car companies are franchises so they wouldn't be able to help.

Exchange money there, you get a better rate, we take US $'s. We tipped about 10% as we went along in restaurants/tuk tuks etc and at the hotel gave the tip to the management to distribute, just have to hope it got to the right people. Have fun, we are off there again in Septemeber - our 3rd visit, we love it there.

The problem with reporting anything here is that you immediatly become involved. Having recently seen a situation escalate while I was in hospital, police and hospitals authorities involved as someone alleged their mother had been treated disrespectfully, I would be very frightened to say a word against anyone these days and I am an incredibly law abiding person. Beware! Trouble with that is, if everyone turns a blind eye, then what does it do to society? People just end up doing what they want. I agree but I saw a fellow patient reduced to tears by the police because she had said something out loud about the visitors of another patient, having witnessed this first hand then you think twice before getting involved.

hi i have a part time maid with her own visa come daily. she is good and not charge expensive like in the maid company.if you like can contact me in this forum couse right now she has plenty time. This arrangement is illegal unfortunately and if she was caught working in your home by the authorities both you and she would be liable for HUGE fines (upwards of 50k). The only legal way to have a maid is either to sponsor them yourself or via an agency. Sorry to share this news but it is better to be on the right side of the law here.

I don't understand exactly what you mean! There is no reason why the British Embassy would be involved here! You will have to get your marriage certificate and kids birth certificates notarised,attested and legalised in the country they were issued though! This takes time too and is expensive!
