How about getting him to look at Victory Heights and Arabian Ranches too, the big Palmeras are about 185k, and there are some Saheels (spacious 3 bed ones) going for around 190k too. edited by Cornish Pixie on 12/07/2011

We all tried on a few clothes but left empty handed, I think that Festival City has a far better selection and it's much bigger! Also the M&S summer stuff this year is not that exciting!

Do look in on us once in a while and if you ever get the chance to return for a holiday please give me a shout. When do you fly out? - silly me I just read it below, the 15th, enjoy your last week! edited by Cornish Pixie on 08/07/2011

Just been through this exercise. In the end National and Hertz were prepared to go lowest, they both seemed to want the deal. BMAP - We found Gargash to be THE most expensive, I did fancy a Mazda Q5 but the price was crazy compared to what we are paying for my new Ford Explorer. My advice would be to bargain HARD - it worked for us!

Regardless of what is best costwise, I couldn't stand leaving my water heaters on all the time as the cold water is never cold enough to make it possible to have a shower in the summer without being scalded. We leave ours off all summer too and simply use the 'cold' water tank as hot! Our bill is 30% higher this month, and we have not used any more than the month before! The surcharges seem to be doing the damage this month!

Hi BMAP, Most people use the company's PO Box address for their personal mail too, that way someone from the office goes to collect the mail daily and it comes straight to DH's desk and saves you a lot of bother. For online shopping I use Aramex Shop and Ship, I have 2 mail box addresses one in the UK and one in the USA, the mail order items then get couriered out here and you pay them on delivery. I am not sure if there is an Australian equivalent that you could use. You can get a private PO Box but I am not sure where there is availability right now, there is an under supply!

I hope that the LL of your Meadows villa is compensating you well considering the disturbance and nuisance he is creating to your lives. He has no right to ask you to leave and if you went to RERA they would tell him this.

Oh my goodness, sorry to hear your little boy isn't eating/drinking well. It is so hard to make them understand that it will help them, have you tried fruit lolly pops? I think it's OK to take a quick break, have you got someone who can watch them (in their cage!!!) while you get out for an hour?

We used to make mega traffic jams, they filled the whole of the living room and involved making lots of Lego models to create the buildings, every single vehicle they had in their toy box strategically placed, plus airplanes at the airport etc. The Fisher Price garage, ELC play mat etc It was great fun and had to be left for daddy to see when he finally got home, I hope your DH is not away on a long trip or you will probably break your neck tripping up before he gets back! Hope the little ones are feeling a bit better, are they eating again OK? Big hugs, I hated being confined when my 2 were sick, drove me potty! CP xxx

I think they go on the hour from the marina, just by the Bateel Cafe. There is a 2 for 1 in The Entertainer too. Lovely trip, out one exit of the marina along in front of JBR and back in the other end. It will be cooler down there than inland. I hope your Ma is coping OK, it isn't that hot this week, the humidity is quite low!

I don't know about the DU packages but Etisalat has a AED 49 Social package, unlimited BBM's, facebook etc but no email access, or AED 90 again BBM's and email but no facebook. You may have to get your Blackberry unlocked if it came with a UK phone package, I don't think it is difficult it's just that it might void the warranty. I am not much of an authority on this but I have the AED 49 monthly package so that I can BBM my kids in the UK for free! edited by Cornish Pixie on 26/06/2011

I got my job from an ad on EW but my CV didn't go through via the application page - I had to chase it up and ask if they had received it, and they hadn't so I ended up applying via their website instead. Suggest if there is a box to write in, to leave a short message with your email address just in case your CV is too big a file or something. Good luck I hope you find something soon, I am really enjoying full time work after many years of just being part time but I am happy when Thursday 6pm arrives too!

Safe journey BMAP and we'll look forward to your contributions, we are losing a few old timers like Clairehdp so it'll be great to welcome a newbie on board who is so eloquent and already helpful! Meadows 5 is great, I think I may have visited the villa you are taking with a new family last week (but they were not ready to take just doing a look see visit), if it is the same one - very nice!!! All the best CP

Hi there, does anyone know if I would be able to go to the Al Wasl Lloydstsb branch to pay a Sterling cheque into my Lloydstsb UK GBP bank account? If not, what can I do with a GBP cheque I recently received through the post? TIA. Mail it back! Or and preferably ask a friend who is travelling back to the UK soon to pay it in or post it there!

Thanks Buy Me a Pony - we will definitely look into GreenFields during our visit. For now I'm thinking may be apply for some of the 2012 sessions and enroll my son in one of the available pre schools. Also thank you for the documentation tip, will do that prior to leaving tomorrow. I think that is a great idea, many of the schools have a bigger year group in Year 1 (UK system) KG2 (US). Lots of nice pre schools about - I love Children's Garden, it is bilingual and has two locations, Green Community and Jumeirah 2.

And finally, the knowledge that by the time the lease has reached settlement, you will have enough Dirhams in your account to pay for the rental cheque, agent's commission (5%) and DEwA housing payment (also 5% of annual rental). The DEWA deposit it 2k for a villa and 1k for an apartment, and you will have to pay AED 110 reconnection fee too. The 5% housing fee is paid in monthly installments via DEWA (if you are unlucky it seems, 50% of people here never get charged it - but saying that we've been paying it for more than 6 years).

You are not going to find it easy getting a place for a 4 year old, that age group is the most difficult/stretched this year . A few suggestions - Childrens Garden - Jumeirah, Jumeirah Baccalaureate School in Jumeirah 1, Collegiate American School (opening new in Sept),and GEMS Wellington Academy Sillicon Oasis. A tip, look at a few housing areas but concentrate on the school place, schools pretty much all break up on the 29th June and some have already finished the school year but the admin dept will still be working.
