Most high streets in the UK have a couple of charity shops, I know of one off Kensington High Street opposite the entrance to Waitrose (top end of Earls Court Road), as this is an expensive area they do sometimes have some bargains!

We went a few years ago before the new stadium was built and there was plenty of parking and shuttle buses. Taxi/bus lines get long at the end of the night, we actually left before the big race to miss them!

Actually, I have to say, the road systems *do* suck. Big time. And it has nothing to do with it being a new city - it has to do with bad planning. It is not normal to have to do two at least u-turns every time I try to go someplace. How come there isn't an exit out of both sides of Arabian Ranches for people going to Abu Dhabi? How come Sports City's roundabouts, when completed, won't let you go towards Abu Dhabi? How come the round about besides the Spinneys in the Springs is set so it is useless for leaving Spinneys and you have to go completely around, passing a school, to get back to where you are going? There are plenty of planned cities they could have used for an example - Islamabad, for one, is a well-laid out, planned city. So is Washington DC. But whatever Dubai's good points, the road system is *definitely* not one! I have to agree Guinness, some days I drive twice as far as I need to because of these silly U turns and lack of junctions/exits!

yeahh i checked Sidra and Al Manara... but they're all so expensive... i want a 3bedroom compound villa for 120K - 125K (max) and the only ones that fit that are the Arenco villas in Al Badaa (behind Ghazal mall) and those are sooooooooo old! :( I think your budget is a long way off what you'll have to pay in almost all of Um Suq and Jumeirah, sadly the lower the price the less likely it is to be renovated. Along Beach Road are a couple of older compounds, Lincoln Villas, or something like that - I heard they are recently renovated and not too expensive.

I have never seen any for sale, maybe ask in one of the better jewelers here - I am sure they'd be horrifically expensive as they must be quite rare nowadays!

Great news! I am so happy to hear Guinness is home! Why did the Emaar security at M7 not call you (if it was them who found him)? I can't understand that, they called Dubai Municipality and not the owner. If anyone has any contacts within Emaar maybe we could find out the policy of security re lost/found pets and get it reviewed?

I have never heard of this before but bit does make sense, however in the summer we use the cool water in our turned off hot water tanks to cool the cold (but very hot) water from outside. Not sure there is an answer to this one. <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 22/03/2011</em>

I am interested too as we have my DD plus boyfriend coming out in a few weeks and he has a Zimbabwean passport so can not go out of the UAE on his visit visa (if he wants to come back in that is!), I thought as they don't stamp passports at Dibba we might be OK to hit the wadis that way - can anyone clarify the current situation?

July in Salalah( Oman ) is said to be great too .... just another option ... might be cheap too All of August will be Ramadan though so it might be a bit too quiet and dull in Salalah then.

Thanks Ladies! I ended up with Trish and am very happy about the whole thing! She did highlights in 2 different colours and it turned out great! would definatly go back to Pastels for other stuff too now. Very friendly atmosphere but they leave you alone if you just wanna linger over a magazine :-) Glad you liked them too, they are always very happy and friendly there - unlike a few other salons I have been to in Dubai over the years!!!!

Hi Stovetop, had a quick ride out to IBN last night and found the shop but it was closed looked in the window though its like alladins cave will definitely go back, The Ibn Battuta branch of House of Prose has moved to The Dubai Garden Centre on the SZR! I also read a lot and buy many books from Feline Friends at their monthly Friday book sales at Times Square, they charge about AED 10 per book!

Cousrework is sadly often basically written by the teachers and then rewritten in the students' own handwriting and the boards obviously turn a blind eye to it....depends on the ethics of the school/staff...By saying this I am not suggesting that students don't deserve to be where they are...here are exceptions to every rule... Good lord, the teachers in Dubai must all be bionic if they are re-writing everything, give the students a tiny bit of credit - what a load of cr*p! Truly I refuse to post another word on this subject, it's getting sillier by the hour.

SM, absolutely and with increases up to £9,000 ........ At the end of the day, I personally do not think that you can beat the Scottish Unis for our Scottish Darlings. :) Us English will be even more green than at present, there is no doubt that the Scottish have it good on the uni front!

After hosting a couple of big parties here which we had catered and never really knowing how many to order food for, I now stick to small gatherings of maximum 10 good friends - it is a lot less stressful! I love the idea of not disclosing the party venue until you get a positive reply , ingenious!

Despite all of your excellent advice it is going to be really hard to make the decision on where to live! There are so many pros and cons to each area... Aargh! If I can sort out my visa issues I will hop on a plane ASAP to get started... I think the decision might be easier than you think right now! Honestly once you start looking you will be able to discount lots of compounds/areas/styles of villas - then you can concentrate on the areas/places you like! If you need a visit visa most hotels can arrange them within 24 hours!!

Not really, we had been here 4 years when she went to uni and previously to that were in Europe for years! No lying to them they just classed her as a home student! So her education has not been UAE based for her whole school life, explains a lot. Would love to do the statistics on this, exam results based on time attended in International schools etc for a true reflection of standards. She did go to International Schools from age 7, but in Germany and Belgium!!!

Very little IB work is assessed by the schools, and as far as I know if it is it's moderated by IB examiners in Switzerland, orals are all recorded and moderated too. No idea tally-ho, I think the rules are made by the universities themselves! After going to the University Fair here my DD did not apply to Brighton as they would 100% have treated her as an overseas student, it might have helped that her brother was already studying as a home student in the UK.

She is at Brookes which is not a part of the elite Oxford Uni, It is one of the 'new' unis! However DAA students are accepted all over the world into some the best universities, one girl in my DD's year is at Yale.

My DD is studying at Oxford Brookes and went to DAA (IB Diploma), her BF at uni is also from Dubai (not that they knew each other before going to the UK!) and she went to DC (A Levels). HTH!

My SIL and her hubby has a combined income of 70K GBP. She is always saying she can't afford this, can't afford that. 2 kids...both are at home with nanny. Probably paying the nanny!!! I think, given it is Friday, I would head off to an A&E department - not many of the surgeries open on Friday morning. Hope your baby recovers soon. Have you tried sponging his/her body and letting the water evaporate to bring done the fever, and placing cool damp flannels in the groin area? My son used to suffer from terribly high fevers and this is how I used to help him before the medication started to work.

Anywhere between Um Suq and Jumeirah would be an easy drive, DESS is not very difficult to get to and it's a great school, I am really glad you took the advice from EW and decided to move early, I am sure you won't regret it!
