In a nutshell, dogs are banned from the beaches here. Some people do take their mutts out past Jebel Ali Hotel to the beach there though. Sorry not what you wanted to read I know!

I am much older than you but I like an Olay age defying anti-wrinkle eye cream or Boots No 7 Protect and Perfect eye cream. Neither of these are expensive but I have found them both ood. Be gentle when removing your eye makeup as that area is quite sensitive, and smooth eye creams on very carefully, some people say to just use the marriage ring finger tip! Another thing to consider is if you might be dehydrated, drink at least 2 litres of water a day and that might help your skin condition too, and stay out of direct sunshine.

ACE have them custom made, but they are expensive! Also near AB Vets in Barsha is a shop that does things like this too.

Are you a student or working? If you are working - HR professionals seem to have longer careers and more flexibility later in their careers than say Sales/Marketing people, age seems to bring respect not burnout!

Have you asked the security guy on the desk? Mind you, if I lived there I would be a bit miffed if outsiders were regularly booking our courts, we have this problem with the tennis courts/football field at The Lakes and it annoys lots of people because they feel - why should they pay maintenance fees so that others can amuse themselves for nothing?

Sending texts from the UK to a UAE number is expensive, but you receive them free. What we did with our kids before they converted to Blackberry's and BBM's was keep 2 phones active 24/7, then we'd receive texts on the UK number but text back from UAE phone (as international texts are cheap from here). With calls - try to use only Skype, if you are bringing a laptop make sure it is installed before you leave the UK as it can be difficult to download here! I think Du SIM cards are free, when you arrive check out the options, we only have 2 suppliers here Du and Etisalat! Enjoy your stay in Dubai! <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 13/03/2011</em>

I go to Bavaria Optics on Al Dhiyafa Street in Satwa, the owner/ optician is German and very experienced. I think that good frames and lenses are about half the price here than in the UK, I know places like Spec Savers in England are cheap but when you compare a high quality frame with Japanese lenses that is where you can save here. I have recommended quite a few people and all but one person has been satisfied! My friends who stayed at Christmas and live in Belgium bought 3 pairs between them and are delighted, it saved them around 60% compared to Brussels. In case you want to call the number is 04 345 1919 - do make an appointment though as they work the old style hours 10-1pm then 4.30- 10pm.

We've been to both the Gary Rhodes' restaurants and enjoyed our meals enormously. Went to Rhodes 2010 just before Christmas and the food and service was wonderful, just one small warning - don't over order on the side dishes, we did and left 75% of them! The food at Mezzanine is more sophisticated and formal, excellent too. I 'd be happy to recommend either! The advantage Pier Chic has is location, it can not be faulted for that and is my absolute favourite restaurant in Dubai on that alone!

How odd to even have to discuss it... mine are grown but I would never even have dreamed of delivering both of them to a party that only one had been invited to (mind you I doubt they would have wanted go to the same party but that's another topic entirely). Also find the current trend of providing goodie bags to your guests odd too - whatever happened to bringing a gift for the Birthday girl or boy and not expecting anything in return? Or have I missed something somewhere? I wholeheartedly agree, thank goodness mine are grown and flown, I wouldn't be a good mummy in this age!

Must have the passport though (i think). No you don't have to have the physical passport but you do have to pay extra to cancel it without it!!! We cancelled our daughters without having her passport! JA charged us a few hundred dirhams.

Now this is really odd, I have just been out and read my water meter and it's the same reading as it was 2 months ago - I promise we have been showering/laundering clothes/watering the garden. Not what the h*ck should I do? How big is my conscience? Do I call DEWA and tell them? My DH is currently dancing round his office!!

I have a dilemma too, our latest DEWA bill is the lowest we have ever had.....but it looks like an estimated bill as the figures are too rounded. I am trying to decide if I overpay it and then it'll compensate for the next bill we receive which is bound to be enormous!

The 2 bed villas at Jumeirah Village Triangle are easily within your budget (they have a maids room too) and much more spacious than the 2 bed villas in The Springs, they start at 85k, also the gardens are enormous! You might be lucky in Um Suq or Jumeirah but the quality of villas theres varies so much it'll be quite a challenge to find a good one. Otherwise a 3 bed in The Springs should be within budget but beware not all of them have a maids room!

I have spent the best part of every summer here for the last 6 years and survived to tell the tale! It is hot but everywhere is air conditioned and i also enjoy the quieter roads/malls etc. On the education front - you stand a much better chance of getting a place in a good British school for your child starting in the summer term, compared to looking for a Year 2 place to start in September. If it were me I'd be contacting the school registrars now and asking for an April place! Schools here can only take new arrivals' children in the last term, no children can transfer between school in Dubai then, so a school would rather have a bum on a seat (and the cash in the bank) than wait for a newbie to start in Sept.

I agree with you - Emaar all the way, their communal facilities are almost always best too. Trident have some quite nice buildings too thoughthat are worth looking at and Damac!

Could anyone else recommend a good cover/price insurance?? Many thanks We went thru a UK broker and ended up with a Luxembourg based company called Globality. We pay our Du each month by a direct debit from our visa card. This months bill was supposed to be deducted on 1/3/11 and they took it yesterday instead.....what a cheek, 2 weeks early!!!

Good cover but very expensive! Just be aware that there are also quite a few exclusions - when I had a stress fracture in my foot I opted to wear an orthopedic boot rather than be put into plaster, they deducted the cost of the boot from my claim!!! My DH had special innersoles for his shoes made rather than having a complicated op on his foot/bunion and they didn't pay for them either (over US $1000). We swapped to another provider, after more than 25 years with BUPA, as a year ago they increased our premiums by 28%, sure with this new company we get a lower level of cover but we are saving over $500 a month, so worth it (and we pay ourselves!!).

The main souq is along the Cornische in Muttrah and well worth a visit, as is that whole area, although it is hard to buy authentic Omani silver these days! :( Perhaps take a dhow trip as the coastline is lovely....!
