NO! Be really careful and don't waste time with agents who contact you that way! If you let an agent show the property they will charge the tenant 5%. If you go the agent way use one that is well known. I have dealt with Allsopp and Allsopp too and they were good as well.

I only had to wait a day and that was because it was a weekend, I am sure the only reason a hospital insists on you stay overnight is for the $$$$. I was living in West Africa when I miscarried and they also made me stay overnight too, it meant I had to leave my 12 month old son with a helper (my DH was travelling of course) and all they did to me was not feed me!! Stand your ground and say you want to go in first thing in the morning, then you just fast for 12 hours, and do not drink any fluids for I think around 3 hours. I looked up BUPA's pre operation guidelines and they were quite informative. x

I should imagine like applying for all types of US visas the best place to start is on the US Consulate website. From experience of having a son study in the States they insist on online applications and then you get an appointment to attend the consulate in person. For some reason this whole process has always intimidated us so i wish you luck, wear your brave knickers that day!! http://dubai.usconsulate.gov/

I had to have a D&C a few months back (not for the same reason as you) and went into City Hospital at 9am, operation scheduled for midday and I left by 5pm. I just took it easy for a few days at home then. Sorry about your miscarriage, I had one between my two kids and I know it is a rough time. Big hugs and take care of yourself. xx

Look up The Green Community, it is right on your doorstep from the Dubai Investment Park and has some amazing apartments - they are quite competitively priced too and within walking distance of a small local shopping mall.

Most travel insurance policies are not valid for 3 months, I found one for my son that could be renewed every 30 days for up to a year. https://global.ihi.com/ It is a policy that is back by BUPA and I thought the cover was very good.

They should be open! I am fairly certain they have a cashier there as my DH has an account there and I am pretty sure he gets cash out sometimes! The branch is in the Emaar Business park just before Dubai Mall.

Avoid the agents you have mentioned like the plague, neither are very nice to deal with. I would try doing it yourself to start - put an ad up on Dubizzle and see what happens, that way you have a happy tenant who has saved 5% and you have not had to deal with the creepy agents in this city. If you decide you have/want to use an agent talk to Property Shop, Landmark, Exclusive and perhaps a few others who are nicer to deal with!!

Marina 'claim' to sell some antiques but you can never be 1005 sure! They have a big warehouse store on Um Suqeim Road on the Al Quoz side of the road. Go on the SZR take the MoE exit and follow signs for Arabian Ranches (?), keep looking on the left hand side of the road to identify the store but I think you'll need to U turn at the 3rd or 4th set of lights to get to it. If you go too far just get to the roundabout with the Al Khail Road and come back down the road again!

I have never seen the contract, he is going to scan it to us tonight his time. Sorry I am having a very flustered day today - I think the contract was for a period of just 11 months originally, this time scale enabling him to have a 30 day break clause included. His 11 months expire at the end of February. They are happy for him to have a new contract on the same terms but today when he was supposed to sign the new lease suddenly this 2 weeks rent fee has arisen, he did not know anything about this before. Until I see the contract I don't know what it really says, would you believe that I deal with thsi stuff every day in Dubai as a relo agent but I have no idea how it works anywhere else!! Thanks for your help!

One of my most recent jobs has been a nightmare because the wife (no kids) does not drive! She wants to live by a bus stop or the metro, in a quiet villa within walking distance of the shops/gym, short commute for DH and the villa to be furnished to their taste! Errr yes, I am about to send them my invoice......impossible wants and no compromises, even I have had to say enough is enough! BMAP - Glad to have helped someone today!

Everyone in offices in Dubai are always delighted to tell newbies where they should live, where their kids should go to school etc. Quite often it is here-say more than factual! I have been doing relocation in Dubai for over 5 years now and can not tell you the number of families who tell me they only want their kids to go to JESS or Jebel Ali PS, sadly in reality the chances of this happening are very slim, but because so and so at the office has told DH that is the best then they can't see any alternatives! I too would have found home schooling a tough option, many kids do leave in the middle of the school year here so don't give up hope for an April place they are often easier to find than September ones. It sounds to me like you are 'on the case' and well researched on all aspects of living in Dubai, you will gain a lot from your look-see trip in February and go back to Australia with a clearer picture of how your life will be here! Good luck, and try to enjoy the next few months and not get too stressed with everything, or DH!

Hi BMAP, I have not read through the whole posting but I just wanted to add a few things about having a driver vs a second car! Drivers earn around AED 3000-4000 per month, and get accommodation/allowance on top I think. They will not work from 7am-11pm every day, their hours would probably be 7am-7pm 5 days a week so late dinners/late in the office might not be easy to work round. A second car does not need to be flash, there are lots of smaller cars secondhand that would not cost much to run. Fuel, servicing and insurance are not too expensive here either. Trying to make all your decisions before you arrive here is very difficult, it sounds like your DH needs to relax a little and go with the flow - nobody lands here and starts running straight away, it just can't and doesn't happen, obstacles will come your way and you will have to fire fight sometimes, the first 6 months are the hardest I promise but work around school places/work location and you'll have some some idea of the best way to plan! I think I read that the Greenfields Community School at the GC can take your kids - great school, very friendly - hard to beat, think about living that way too, good value villas in Green Community, Victory Heights and Sports City and an easy-ish commute for DH too! Arabian Ranches is more expensive but really popular with families. There are many people on here who are ready to help with information and support, we look forward to welcoming you to Dubai soon!

It is your call but both my kids overstayed their 30 day visas by a few days (4 and 7 from memory) and were not fined. You can do a visa run but I would not bother, the cost of overstaying your visa if you are fined is only about AED 30 per day so still cheaper than getting a new tourist visa at Hatta, they are about AED 200 per person now.

Quote from SusieH When I lived in Portugal I thought there were an awful lot of stray dogs until someone told me almost everyone turns their dog on to the street each day for "exercise" until they return from work!end of quote! (Did something wrong here - oops!) As a child brought up in rural Cornwall this is what we did with our dog every morning, he'd go and visit the fishermen on the beach and mooch around all day, meet me and my sister from the school taxi and come home for his dinner! Now I panic if my dog as much as sets foot outside the front door not on a lead!! edited by Cornish Pixie on 04/02/2011

If it is a suspected abscess under a tooth I would suggest going to the chemists and buying a broad spectrum anti-biotic, chances are the dentist will prescribe one anyway. I think most dentists won't start before 10am on a Friday :(
