I think it is the right way to go too. Companies should be paying a salary for the job and then the applicant can decide if what they offer is enough to cover their outgoings - rent, utilities, school fees etc. Families on full expat packages with numerous children (school fees fully paid) and expecting huge villas to house them in are being phased out, even by some of the bigger companies, maybe oil and gas are exempt as they make big enough profits to cover them, however there is often someone younger with less responsibilities or older with grown kids willing to do the same job and firms are making this choice instead. <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 03/02/2014</em>

District cooling companies are - Empower Palm District Cooling Emicool Anyone who simply lives in an apartment where AC is included because the cooling systems are central to the building should not be charged, in this case the charges are included in the landlords service fees and can not be charged on to a tenant. To expect a tenant to pay there has to be a seperate cooling bill raised by a district cooling company, not simply a calculation made by the landlord to extract yet more money from his tenant. I hope this makes sense!

Landlords can not change any terms and conditions without agreement with the tenant. Generally however district cooling is paid by the tenant but they should then open an account with the supplier and pay the bill themselves. Which area is this in?

As far as I know they are all private rentals, the pool areas are lovely but I have seen some quite serious damp problems in quite a few apartments and the hallways and it was hard to see why it was happening. All the one bedrooms are road facing.

Two bedroom villas in Um Suq and Jumeirah are rare. I would say that 3 bedroom villas start at 180k (and those are pretty old and basic) up to 300k, prices have gone mad recently. Good luck with your search.

I went round last weekend - there were lots of stalls selling clothes/shoes etc. and a few with household items, not great and nothing like as big as either Safa or Uptown Mirdiff. <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 19/01/2014</em>

Everyone should now be paying housing fees, it is 5% of your annual rent but collected monthly with your Dewa, so 100k rent = AED 416.66 per month housing fee. There are no areas of Dubai which are exempt, all expats pay!

We're the same, logged on via 2 separate accounts on 2 computers, day 3 men's no problem but day 5 men's sold out before getting to cc option 9.02! We would like 2 (or 3?!) tickets for the men's day 5 if anyone has them - but won't pay the scammers any extra when they appear on Dubizzle...

Somewhere along beach road is a little electrical shop and they always have 'odd' bulbs, I have never been lucky at ACE or Home Centre, sorry I can't be more specific but I can never ever remember exactly where it is and I always have to U turn when I do eventually find it again.

Their DD could get a residency visa as daughters are allowed to be sponsored by their father until they are married, this might be the easiest (and cheapest option). She would have to have her birth certificate legalised/notarised/attested though.

There isn't an easy answer to this one as it all depends on the salary and job of the woman! I am pretty sure it goes something like this - the woman must have a degree and earn over about 20k. The company PR Team should be able to clarify this.

However - take heart. I've just got back from Hong Kong and have never encountered such rudeness / lack of chivalry / public spitting etc. I almost fainted on the metro and no one gave me a seat. Years ago I took my then young kids to the marine park in HK and was astonished at how people pushed and shoved, it spoiled the whole day for me. Di@DXB Hope you are OK and your bruises soon go.

laughing cow.... but not round. I thought soft cheese was a no no for those who were preggers. I don't think any of the cheeses mentioned could be a risk to someone who is pregnant as they are all manufactured to within a millimetre of their life!

It leaves from Marina Walk very close to Bateel Cafe. It is a lovely way to see the marina from the water and not long enough to cause sea sickness if you suffer!

Ace Hardware on Sheikh Zayed Road (just past Times Square) have both real and imitation trees, also Dubai Garden Centre, most of the big supermarkets like Carrefour and I am sure I saw some at IKEA too. English College Primary School is closing so that is adding to the pressure of places for September 2014. Nord Anglia is a new school due to open in September, they will be in Al Barsha and Kings are also opening up a new campus at Nad al Sheba, i suggest you get into contact with both of these schools ASAP. Unfortunately FS1 and FS2 places are always harder to find, that is because the expat population here is young and hence have young kids - not that finding senior school places is easy either. Good luck, you will always get lots of support and opinions on EW.

The RTA is no longer above Union Coop by Safa park, that office has moved to the Al Manara Municipality Centre on SZR. Providing both your passport and driving licence are from countries that are exchangable then you are OK, both Eire and Australia are on that list. If you are sponsored by your DH it is him who should give her an NOC (No Objection Certificate) but if you are working and sponsored by your company providing your UAE residency visa status is manager you don't need a company NOC.

Park Hotel Apartments in Jadaf and Dunes Hotel Apartments in Oud Metha are both quite close to City Hospital. I fear that they may struggle to get a booking over Christmas and New Year, and if they can the price will be extortionate. So sorry to hear about your friend, I hope she makes a good recovery.

Well done getting a job offer, I don't know how real estate agents pay is calculated but I do know that very few pay a basic salary so you finance them to start with (running your car/petrol etc.).

There's an extra ARTE market this month on Friday 20th too at Times Square from midday onwards. What great news, we had such a busy day yesterday that we were only able to spend 30 minutes there and my DH was really annoyed as he felt short changed!!

Try using the Dijonnaise (a dijon mustard mixed with mayo), lots of seasoning, more crunchy salad ingrediants like cucumber. I buy low fat mayonaise and think it's as nice as full fat!

We used ours at Villa Beach last weekend, along with a BOGOF main course voucher! I can recommend Villa Beach, the food was execellent and the location wonderful! Enjoy!

Cost of sponsorship, food, toiletries and the annual flight for a live in maid soon add up too, having a full time maid does cost around about 3k - its still very reasonable compared to anywhere in the rest of the (western) world. If you don't really need full time then look at an agency called Busy Bees, they charge hourly rates and train their maids on baby and child care. <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 10/12/2013</em>

I thought you couldn't get the DEWA set up & get your deposit receipt until after you had your tenancy contract Ejari'd?? It's DU you can't set up without Ejari, you need the Dewa receipt to get the Ejari done!

Yes, I was wondering that. I've now asked to have the rent increase put in writing and mentioned it's so I can take it to the rent committee for verification. But I do have a feeling that the rent committee will be upping everything soon anyway. As far as I understand the system the rent calculator uses information collected from Dewa and Ejari, it isn't updated by the rent committee.
