did you read thru all the comments about this? Did you mean to be so rude? My question relates specifically to people who hold multiple residence visas for countries around the world, not necessarily the UAE. It also relates to people who are paid in the UK in to UK accounts in GBP, pay tax and national insurance, and have property in the UK, spending much of the year there. Therefore my question is specifically how do the DVLA class residence, as when a person has multiple residence visas they may not be classed as specifically resident of another country. And while the tax/NI/payment may not be relevant to most of us here, it may be relevant to some proving they are not resident in another country.. If you have any legislation/written confirmation regarding the above specifically on[i'> how residency of another country is classed by the DVLA when a person holds multiple residence visas,[/i'> please do share it. Otherwise, I will contact the DVLA and ask them as previous correspondence on here does not clarify that.

Thank you Cymraes. Now I just need to find this in writing on the DVLA site. :) Am sure someone linked to it before?...

No that doesn't happen on the UAE side, but I was looking for the DVLA guidance on it from the UK side and also to clarify whether there's a difference between someone being non resident for tax/NI purposes, or not - and if that is how they class being non resident, or if it's simply having a residence visa in another country, not necessarily the UAE. Might need to just contact DVLA! :nerd: Will update!

Sorry to bump an old thread. I am looking for the DVLA documentation which lays out the below, but can't find it. I am sure someone has linked to it before. Specifically the part which talks about your UK DL not being valid if you are resident in another country. Also, how does it define 'residency'? Is it simply having a residence visa in another country, or if you have a residency visa in another country but are still a UK tax and NI payer, would this have any affect on the above? Sorry, complicated.

if you don't want a huge school, there are lots of smaller schools in Jumeirah/Um Suqeim. As previous posters said, it really depends on what sort of education you are looking for, how academic your children are, what sort of other things they like doing. Education and housing is a bit of a minefield. :) DIFC is pretty central so don't worry too much about DH's commute. Even the farthest flung places in Dubai will be at DIFC within 20-25 minutes and pretty much everything you want to do in Dubai is about 20 minutes away one way or another! I am not sure we are being very helpful. :) When are you coming over for a look?

All of the schools and areas to live that you mention are good. It probably very much depends on your budget. There is an issue with morning traffic leaving AR at the moment. Welcome in advance to the UAE. :)

You could look in to Marhaba in both directions, and a similar service at the arrival airport (for example Qatar) but for assistance on the plane you'd probably be best speaking to someone at the airline.

Unfortunately, some of the big name Satwa tailors have been touched by the JJ stick and will now not negotiate on price and are very expensive for even the most basic things. You now really have to go and seek out your own unknown smaller tailor up a side street somewhere rather than the big names. But, as previous posters have said, if you are happy with the fit and cut etc then it's all good!

My favourite part of NY was the Harlem tour, it was brilliant - it included a gospel service and it was just like the Whoopi Goldberg/Sister Act film with everyone up dancing etc. It was fab. The tour finshed with an evening at a soul/jazz bar which was also brilliant.

I switched from Dubai92 in the mornings a couple of years ago and moved to Radio 1, DannyC and SerenaK really are very funny. Any new radio show takes time to warm up, but Dubai92 also really needs to look at their playlists, they are just not great. Unless people maybe like that sort of thing. Each to their own!

If your child is a drummer I'm sure you will be seeing evidence of The (non stop) Beat on any surface: walls, tables, floor, pots, pans, the back of the chair in the car etc - ha!! There are children's drum sets in ELC however you could also look at an electronic drum set - with headphones to save your ears. ;)

Going against the grain, you really do get some great deals in all hotels over the Summer. The pools are icy cold and it's just perfect to sit in them with a nice cool drink. If they are not planning on doing a lot of city tours and are quite happy just sitting in the pool or doing some indoor things in malls, there are some great deals on everything. The hotels are generally quieter too, so less frenzied than at other times of the year, deals on spa treatments etc. :)

Hi Lost, In the first instance, your DH should contact the PRO of both companies to see if your visas can be placed on hold while he cancels one and starts the next one. If this is possible, you can renew, be placed on hold, and then the hold will be lifted. However, you are not allowed to travel while the visas are on hold. Sometimes it depends on onshore companies/freezone etc, as to whether or not this is possible. It may be best for him to cancel the visas in May, do visa runs until you leave, and then you start on a new visa when you return to Dubai. (Assuming you are one of the 33 nationalities for visa on arrival?)

It is not hot until - you can't bring the washing in in your bare feet - your shoes squelch when you walk - your glasses steam up - you go into shops pretending to want to buy something, to cool down - you come into the house and open the freezer door

Maybe instead of constantly analysing what has happened to get us here, we need to look forward. This would require some shy people to be more outgoing with their posts. Some people to bite their tongues. And some people to log in and post instead of lurking. Let's have some banter. We also need more maids who stamp on their meat, more cucumber sellers and a sprinkle of humour. It's going to be a long summer otherwise!

There are also loads of indoor soccer camps over the Summer. The Spanish kids mentioned below run one at Sports City, there's one at the Indoor astroturfed pitch at Al Quoz, and another at SoccerKids Dubai at the little Spinneys in the meadows. They are all really good. :win:

Once you have all the forms (make sure your sponsor has signed them) - go to one of the opticians which has links to the RTA. There's one in Jumeriah Plaza on beach road for example. Once your eye test is done the result is automatically updated and you then go and just get your card reprinted.

I think Beebers is spot on with her assumption regarding cooking for different nationalities - in many households it can take a full day to cook the daily meal, with everything home made, lots of chopping and prep to be done and many different dishes, breads etc - whereas in others it would be beans on toast!

I don't have one and I never any have problems with it... Everyone needs their own now. You no longer go on your spouse's license. You apply as normal (by going into a store and picking up a form & completing all the requirements re submitting Tenancy contract etc) and it is signed/stamped by your employer if you are on their visa, or your DH if he is your sponsor. It takes 3 weeks to come back from CID. HTH.

1. Old Timers move on and when they post are faced with a barrage of "why are you still on here, didn't you move" comments 2. New Timers are told "do a search" when they ask anything that has been asked before so they never get a chance to build up some banter 3. Focus has moved away from Forums to FB groups 4. EW Admin direct people with questions to articles on other parts of the site, not the forum, so again people can't build up a thread with commentary 5. Some posters have little else to do other than try to belittle others and troll around. 6. The thumbs offend some people who take offence at their innocent post being thumbed down so don't come back. 7. Spammers are not picked up/removed efficiently so sometimes you look at EW and the whole page is full of the same person with ridiculous comments. All in all, bring back the old days!

Puddle, with some freezones including DMCC, the process is that the application to cancel DH's visa must be made online by the company. This may be the PRO or the manager of the company depending on how big the company is. This online submission includes various paperwork such as the employee's final payment calculation (signed/stamped by management) and the resignation/termination letter. The application is then approved by the Freezone Authority (1-2 days) and following this, the passport is submitted for cancellation. The submission must be done jointly by the employee and the company. It is returned by courier to the company and can take anything from 1 day to 10 days, it really depends how busy immigration are. in short, your visa can be done by DH (you don't need to go) in 5 minutes, but DH's visa could take anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks - depending on how quickly the company actually want to do it, and how busy Immigration are. HTH.
