While we're on the subject - the word "organic", in relation to food, is purely a marketing term. It has no scientific basis. And if you think that buying organic food means that you're avoiding pesticides and Velma I totally don't understand your statement. What do you mean? The whole premise of organic food is grown without the use of pesticides. What do you mean then?

Cherpie to answer some of the questions in your OP, it would be easier & quicker at a private clinic but then you'll be paying the fee, which could be 300 ish I guess. It probably depends how much running around you have time for.

You can get all of the vaccinations free up until 5 years old, that are on the UAE schedule (which differs slightly from your home country). You will need to obtain a health card for your LO which you will use at your local clinic. It's best to call in to the local clinic to check on what is required but it will definitely include all the usual docs (pp/visa/EID) and also a TC to show that the clinic you are going to is closest to your house. It's a bit of running around but the government clinics are great, IMO. PS they also operate exactly to the letter of the law, eg. if your next vax is due on 1st Dec and you go to the clinic on 30th Nov, it will not be administered. edited by CouchPotato on 07/01/2015

SarahLou I missed the part about your Mum, sorry for you. x Beebers the documentary on Chernobyl is on YouTube. It's very interesting and shows the brave men who's life expectancies were literally coming down by years for each minute they stayed at the scene trying to sort it out. Terrible.

The traditional monsoon season can't really be relied upon any more as happening at certain times. For example countries that used have torrential downpours in July now often have just a ten minute shower, while it was raining last week in December in some countries.

Several of my Mum and Dads friends including my Mum died in their 40's all from with a variety of cancers. There were 6 of them in total. They all would be in their 70's now. I often wondered why there were so many people diagnosed in the 1980's Possibly for a different thread topic, but over the last few months I have been astounded by how many people at home have been diagnosed with cancer. People from in their 40's upwards. It really makes you wonder what is going on, or what went on. I watched a documentary recently on Chernobyl and think there is much more damage that has been done to many countries than we were ever told or will ever know.

Cut it into little cubes and potatoes the same size. Fry onions & garlic and a little ginger if you have any. Add tomatoes, salt, the potatoes and the meat and cover it all with water, cook until the potatoes are done. It's kind of 'stovies' or 'chillifry' depending on where in the world you are from, but is a big hit in our house!

You can get lactose free milk and other products in Dubai, not sure about AD. However one thing you will definitely get in AD is Camel's milk, which you should try. Dh is lactose intolerant and has no problems with the 0% fat camel milk (but does with the full cream camel milk).

Carambar, many nurseries take young babies from around 2-3 months old. These nurseries have webcams, nurses, ladies who are trained in first aid, etc. Most also have the option where you can log on from work in your lunch hour and check up and see how things are going. You may have more peace of mind doing this and knowing your LO is happy and active rather than leaving your LO with a new maid who you are not sure of. Just another angle.

QS sorry to hear you are not settling well. Do you have old friends and family you have returned to, or are you in a different part of the UK to them? How would your DH feel about moving back, if he were able to get a job, would he? Or is he happy there? Not an easy situation when one is happy and one is not. It's probably not the best time of year to be just newly back, with it being dark and miserable and all. I'm sure in a few months when there are new buds on the trees and it's all spring and lovely, you'll feel better (while we are all starting to sweat ;) ) Chin up.

I was thinking fakes as just something to symbolise that part of Dubai - but something silly. I'd like something to symbolise each bit of life that a person experiences while living in Dubai. Oud is a nice idea. :)

If you were making a fun basket with things from Dubai in it for someone leaving, what would you put in it? - fake something or other from karama - Arab salt & pepper pots - ingredients to make a shwarma or a shwarma recipe laminated More ideas please. Not just the usual souvenirs, something with some thought put into it. ;)

There are perfume shops in Bur Dubai/Karama which sell real, (but often in tester packaging), products. And shops in Bur Dubai/Karama which sell fake (but well packaged) perfumes. how to tell one from the other? Steer clear of the perfume shops in the more touristy areas (the shops in the bag section of Karama for example) but head to the very busy perfume shops opposite the Post Office area of Karama.

[u'>Dinner around 5:45/6pm[/u'> - usually 10 tablespoons of rice either white or brown (or 2 wholegrain slices of bread) What am I doing wrong in the above? I'm no expert but on WeightWatchers, rice takes up loads of points on a daily point plan. I think your rice on WW would account for at least half of your daily points if you were doing WW. Try cutting that and the bread out for starters and saving those for a treat day. :)

It sounded like it was a brilliant atmosphere, despite the challenges of getting 40k+ people in and out of a venue at one time. I particularly liked the fact that the whole stadium sang the UAE national anthem and then did a big cheer afterwards, and then the huge cheer that went up a bit later on when people realised HH Sheikh Mohammed had arrived, that was lovely. When you watch videos of the crowds it's amazing how so many nationalities, cultures and religions are all brought together in Dubai and can enjoy and participate in something together. Really nice. Great job Dubai.
