Just thinking aloud, but could you do something with picnic hampers or something? Maybe hire a venue near the River and provide everyone with a picnic hamper & blanket, some activities for the little ones (a clown) and some bottles of champers. Would entertain everyone but on a budget.

A bit 1970's. So what's cooking in the Lola household then? Assiette of Piglet, pan fried and served with a jus de tarragon, coco de paimpol, fennel and lovage?

The area near the Nazwa farming district is nice as it is very picturesque but not too far from little roads and main roads, and even places to have breakfast the next morning. You're also not very far away from the Dubai Desert Reserve so you may see the Oryx there if you are lucky. For safety though, never camp with just one family, always go in a group. Park your car in a visible spot so people driving in the desert at night know there is someone camping there. And remember there are scorpions/snakes in the desert so wear proper boots/shoes. And take extra garbage bags to pick up the litter left behind by others (poisonous to camels). happy camping!! :)

We get together with friends and everybody makes a dish. I'm making: festive red cabbage, cauliflower cheese with a crunchy topping, spicy potatoes and a veg lasagne. :)

She might not necessarily be ungrateful and expected more, but have other struggles at this time of the year. Missing family or whatever. Yes, I thought exactly the same. Until I realised she is being quite cheery with DH. Which is a whole other (TNT) thread

Oh i think the new logo is very innovative, I really like it. Exactly, apart from the number plates, the actual logo in both arabic & english is genius! I love it.

What are your NY resolutions? Mine are mostly around being more organised. Please share some tips! A few years ago an EWer shared her "clutter basket" tips. Leaving a basket on the stairs for things to go upstairs - such a good idea. More please!

For pricier ones, Debenhams would be a good bet. If it's just for a one off then you'd get them in Satwa, there's a big shop near the mosque that would have them.

Well, some people prefer having some fun chit chat about food and other inane subjects, to being distinctly unpleasant. Each to their own!

I didn't say anything about people talking behind each other's backs? I said people would be chatting to each other on PM/email, instead of on here. As we all know, the introduction of FB groups has led to a decline in traffic on here. Other forums/FB groups are different in that they are there actively to encourage chit chat. EW has always discouraged chit chat and for that reason people have been drawn to other places where they can freely chat/meet up. Once EW introduces a PM function people will simply PM/email the person they want to talk to, and take any further chat or meet up from there. Thereby reducing the need to chat on here. Thereby reducing traffic further. Thereby making EW the most dull forum in the world.

But introducing the PM feature will just mean people PM/email each other instead of talking on here and it will be EVEN QUIETER! <hitting face on palm> It's exactly the same problem as people chatting on FB and drawing the crowds away. What we really need is FB to shut down!

i would give similar to what is given in the shoe box appeal, ie. a vest, toothbrush, toothpaste, deo, shavng foam, razor, soap and a phone card etc. however, in the spirit of Christmas, here's a little story about what happened to my DH the other day. He'd been out in the garden with the gardener who comes a couple of times a week. He'd gone out to give him some extra money as a Christmas bonus. But the chap didn't want to take it. He said, "Sir, thank you so much for offering to give me money. But what means more to me than money, the fact that you say hello & how are you every time. Most people, they treat us like we are invisible. They ignore us. A few say hello, but that's it. Most people ignore us. Nobody ever says 'how are you'. you are the only one of my customers who says how are you. To most people, we are invisible". I found this quite moving - maybe in the New Year we can all make more of an effort with the people who do our menial jobs for us. :)

the white cheese is much softer than proper feta which is crumbly and more tangy. it is an ok substitute though. mrs b, do you deep fry the samosas? or can you do them in the oven?

It depends on many factors. We have a similar size with a pool and the most we've paid even in summer is 2,200. it's around 1200 at the moment. things that keep ours down: -no maid and are out til 4pm daily so no a/c on during the day -monitor pool to make sure it is not leaking and filling up automatically -no watering/garden just automatic irrigation on minimal setting -washing machine not on every day -careful with bulbs etc long term energy ones It all seems to help as our bills do seem to be lower! ETA also installing split-a/c units not relying on the big a/c units edited by CouchPotato on 18/12/2014

It depends which country the other passport is from. Lots of countries don't allow dual nationality and insist you give up the other passport. Countries like Canada however, don't.

What's the road called GE? As from JLT there are lots of road names on signs but unlike other places, none of them say North, West, East, South so you can't figure out which one you need! when you say it takes you to E311 i take it you mean it goes in AD direction? So if you want to go to Dubai it's a case of going to GC Uturning and coming back? thanks

there used to be a back road to JLT along past the Gemplex buildings. Is that not there anymore? Also I'd LOVE to know the routes of all these new roads out the back of JLT. When you say one goes up to VH, which one is that? And is it literally into VH and nowhere else? Or can you get on MBZ road from it?

There's never a problem getting to SIA if you use the bypass road. Even during rush hour you would be fine. It will take you about 35-40 minutes using that road but allow an hour to be sure. Where you may need extra time is at check in. The doors to the airport are small and if there are hundreds of people trying to get throught them with trollies it can be bad. This is usually et Eid time though and for the night time flights. 2 hours will be enough so leave 3 hours before just to be safe - but if it looks hectic you can pay for the Hala executive service which is a premium check in service. Happy hols!
