I have just been to Rera, and my understanding is that, if it does come to a ruling by them, [b'>a three months notice period applies throughout the year - regardless of what is written in the contract[/b'>. That means, YES, you now may give notice during the year and not only towards the end of the contract expiry date. Rera is on the second floor at the Land Department in Deira, and they are very helpful. I would suggest to visit them with your landlord, then exchange your second cheque with one that covers three months from mid June onwards. Wish you good luck.

Hi DesertRain, would love to just shoo your pain away but, unfortunately, the only way out of it is to go through it ! One of the hardest things I found (upon my breakup after 17 years) is to find and realize dreams, goals, and you might say a better life, of my own - I'd lost that "me" completely... With the love and compassion of good friends, I worked at loving myself again as the most important first step! Practically, what helped me discover myself again was lots and lots of lists: - things to do to please myself to bring a smile on my face - at least once a day, and as often as possible... - things to do for the first time - at least once a week - things you'd like to do short-term / long-term - your short-term / long-term goals - VERY important! - workshops, courses you'd like to do - meeting new people - etc. etc.- One of the things that lifted me up was - and still is - to connect with outside people, strangers anywhere - compliment / smile at them: amazing feeling! Wishing you much love and compassion for yourself, as your best friends! Many hugs - M

Fairwater, do you mean Sh Saeed House (Palace) in the Heritage & Diving Village? If so, it surely is on Dubai side... and can easily be reached from the abra station within five minutes walk. Lovely to spend the evening there - have fun!

The Gold Souq kind of "snakes" through Al Ras area from one end near the Hyatt and the vegetable & fish market s(where you find the tall New Gold Souq Bldg at the corner) to the other end exiting near the Spice Souq and the abras.

from the spice souq you approach the gold souq at the other end and walk towards the New Gold Souq Bldg and the bus station. Baniyas Rd along the creek is a longer distance. edited by crystalsindubai on 20/05/2011

Hi Nickym1d: hubby could give you an authorization letter (which should quote your name and pp number), together with his pp copy and yours, as well as a copy of the TC. According to my recent experience, that is acceptable. At all times, it is better to register personally - a client registered online almost two years ago and, despite three visits by him and myself, having seen it logged in their recirds, he still does not receive the invoices directly!

I rememeber, quite a few months ago there was (at least for JLT tenants) a questionnaire/instruction/request to advise Dewa of your annual rent / provide TC; failing to do so (it said), Dewa will ASSESS your rent according to Rera guidelines. Could this increase have anything to do with that? Did you register your annual rent with Dewa? Just a thought... edited by crystalsindubai on 19/05/2011

Perhaps worth a try would be to register a case with RERA/Police (whatever is appropriate) and provide copies of relevant paperwork with the Account Manger at your bank? At least, the bank is fully aware in advance that there might be an issue with this cheque.

I would also not miss the Gold Souq which is just a stone's throw away from the Spice Souq - and yes, Sh Saeed House in Shindaga's Heritage & Diving Village is fascinating - love especially the old black&white photos of pre-oil days... Also lovely to see is "Little India" just behind the big mosque & nr the museum, which you can approach through those tiny, narrow alleyways, and peep through to the creek. Have lots of fun!

From own experience, a cheque cannot be cancelled without the beneficiar's NOC and subsequent police report. The property you rent has to have the owner's registered postal address on the title deed, recorded with RERA - I see your only way through them. You mentioned an agent: are they purely leasing agents, or have they been appointed property managers by the landlord (who signed the lease, the llandlord or the agent on his behalf)? If so, they should handle this situation - visit their GM at the office, don't call. Wish you good luck! edited by crystalsindubai on 19/05/2011

@fairyprincess: thanks for the recent feedback on the Miramar (not Mirador!) - that is disappointing, and worrying as friend of mine booked clients on honeymoon into this hotel during September. Upon her request, I then visited and viewed the hotel, but of course can't totally check out all aspects on a one-time visit. Looked beautiful to me, especially the ambience, and the food was good. Yes, the Le Meridien quality is (almost) always excellent, but the one in Al Aqqa so lacks character, sits like a monstrosity on that beach!

Do you have the chance to join a club, workshop, artclasses that make you (per force depending on activity) spend a certain time with others and give you the opportunity to "bond" over time rather than just "passing by each other like ships in the night"? Met and chatted with a young lady who was new to Dubai, most desperately lonely when husband was at work; I suggested art classes, made the contact for her - she never looked back and developed a great network of (all types of) friends. edited by crystalsindubai on 17/05/2011

@ tipahtertipu: where on earth did you get the notion from that most successful businesses started from a non-licenced status - or even as a hobby? Challenge and a healthy competition? You serious? It's competition alright, an unfair one! - and not healthy at all - because it's a constant irritation that certainly can't be healthy for me as a legal businesswoman ! Take your rosy glasses off this unlicenced business issue... edited by crystalsindubai on 14/05/2011 edited by crystalsindubai on 14/05/2011

@ SueB, no contest, any business in a free economy will have competition. It is the cavalier-fashion of taking unfair advantage for your own gain that I object to! @Cushion - also believe in Karma - even if one personally doesn't see it happening - perhaps with a gentle nudge when presented the opportunity...

Well, there are several seaports: Port Rashid, Dubai Drydocks, Hamriya, Jebel Ali. So perhaps the most central location, but outside "downtown" areas would be suitable as event location. In my experience, transport is not provided in seminar/training packages, especially if participants arrive from different areas. But if you wish to do so, many rental agencies are offering bus service of varying capacity (Avis, Thrifty) - see yellow pages. Good luck with your event organization!

A friend (whom I occasionally assist) is holding her training courses at the Dhow Palace Hotel on Kuwait Street, Bur Dubai. It is a well-frequented business hotel which, in addition to your listed requirements, also offers crucial valet and basement parking. She has been very satisfied with all aspects of their services. Perhaps worth an inquiry if it could be suitable for your purpose?

Holding a local proprietorship trade licence (that entails quite a considerable sum of annual fees) for over a decade, I have encountered this very same question. So far, I have decided not to report others I know are, and have been for years, competing - unfairly so - against me without a trade licence. I must confess, though, it is very tempting at times to take a step and standing up for yourself. I find it very galling if others consider this just as a matter of live and let live - or mean! Do those "illegals" consider that they impinge on my livelyhood - and if not, why should any poster expect that I consider theirs? Perhaps, if one does not wish to follow legalities, a better way would be to do this in their home country! As far as I know, the immediate consequence would be that this person would be contacted by the Economic Dept/other relevant authorities depending on where the activities are taking place, with a warning to discontinue their services/activities and/or given a time limit to legalize themselves.

I'd call that marketing money spinning - understandable for a cash-strapped city. Perhaps also a good way to have local entities participate in the costs rather than just reeling in the cash (the usual way)!

To my knowldege, there is no minimum restriction for renting out. However, to be on the safe side and also to be fair to the new tenant, I would indicate at this time that you might want to sell after one year; and let the tenant sign a document that in the event that a sale happens and the new owner wishes to occupy the premises himself, they agree to vacate. edited by crystalsindubai on 06/05/2011
