Do you have a rental car? If this is the case, they keep hold of it to ensure you pay the fine, then you go to the station to collect it. It is perfectly normal (although slightly annoying and a little wrong) and very annoying when you have to sign the form which is in Arabic. [b'>[i'>Really should be in both languages[/b'>.[/i'>['>Hope you get it sorted Why? It's in the language of this country. edited by crystalsindubai on 05/03/2012 In all fairness Crystals, Arabic was only made the "official language" of the UAE in 2008. It isn't like this "Arabic only" policy goes back to the beginning of man and we come along and demand it be another language! English is a dominant language especially in government hence the rule coming into place. The majority of the western expat population do not read Arabic and maybe that makes us who don't read it (including some who can speak it but not read it) irritating or frustrating to the police who are asked for assistance, but I also don't think she was wrong to request or want to sign a legal document in a common language (like English) that she can understand. I would NEVER sign a LEGAL document in another language and would not feel that I should be forced simply because I am in a country that doesn't offer it in English....Period. or "The End" ;) ....It would not be sensible for people to ever do this who did not feel powerless or scared and that is not what the Dubai government or police want of course. Given the dynamic of THIS city (being Dubai and not the remote regions of Cambodia) is is fair to ask that police forms also be in English. As far as anything in writing, I learned the hard way in business that if it isn't in writing the "conversation never happened." But what if the writing is in another language? Did THAT conversation happen? Can you honestly say you sign anything about your child (for example) in a foreign language no matter what you were told or promised to the contrary? PS: I did not have to sign anything (in any language) to get my license back from the police?[ [color=#000066'>In all fairness to our host country, it is quite irrelevant when that decision about their language being THE official language was taken. Having lived here for almost four decades, I am very much aware and grateful at having been treated both by Police, other officials and the national people more courteously than foreigners would be in my own home country. I have signed Arabic traffic tickets on (too) many occasions, and have had the occasion to argue it out later - and sometimes winning. Legal documents? Yes, of course I would affix my signature underneath the English text, very much aware that in Court the Arabic text will prevail. That is the reality, and I have made my choice to accept this all those years ago. Why do so many foreign residents expect their opinions and expectations be accommodated by a host country? Are we more superior because we speak English?[/color'> edited by crystalsindubai on 05/03/2012

Hi Sugarikena There are quite a few places around - try Hama Varie-Farley (http://www.abudhabipottery.com/) - she is living here and gives lessons here and Abu Dhabi. Alternatively Ductac have a number of classes (http://www.ductac.org/) or there is an art centre down the road between Mercatio and Town Centre in Jumeriah (sorry, don't know the name). Good luck and hope you enjoy. It's the Dubai International ARt Center, tel 04-3444 398 - also see website

so no exit fee if you leave via the Hatta crossing but if you use the RAK crossing 35dhs is that correct? but 50 dhs to enter Oman either way? sooo confusing Sorry, don't know about exit fees in RAK, in Hatta there are definitely no exit fees.

@ Lady D: Dubai Immigration gives you 30 days + 10 days before applying a daily fine. And no, no questions asked when making repeat trips. @ Kateh: the 10 days grace is definitely operational, both at RAK and Hatta, and I believe also the airport. Important to calculate correctly with the date of entry being the first day. edited by crystalsindubai on 04/03/2012

OK, so my LL lives!! I spoke to him last week about what we were going to do about renewing my contract and he said he would call me at the end of the month, well I suppose a few days late isn't too bad. Anyway, tomorrow is the last day of my tenancy contract and the LL now wants to meet with me on Tuesday night to discuss. He wants to move in in June but has only given me 6 weeks notice instead of 12 months. Prior to this he wanted to sell and then he wanted to increase the rent.... I smell a little rat. Anyway tuesday night is the night and I am going to stick to my guns and tell him that I want to stay for another 12 months minus the amount of repair bills I have had to pay for that he would not pay. (AED3600 Air con, etc etc) Wish me luck, I'll let you know what happens. To all the other ladies on this thread, did you get anywhere with your LL and/or RERA?? Prior to your Tuesday meeting perhaps it would be good to know from Rera/Rent Committee what kind of proof the LL needs to provide that he does want to move in himself !

Don't know if I explained myself properly when I posted. I was surprised as the last time we went did a visa run to enable us to stay in Dubai, it was 200 dhs each at the Oman office. Our Dubai residency visa has expired so yesterday we went to Hatta. No exit fee. Carried on to the Oman visa office, said we were coming straight back into Dubai, 50 dhs each. Back to Hatta, no re-entry fee, passport stamped with 30 day visitor visa for Dubai. BTW there is a Pizza Hut upstairs in the Oman visa building. Very good pizza. edited by amelia on 04/03/2012 Thank you, Amelia, that looks like good news! Am due for another run around March 20 - will enjoy the pizza...

coco pops, let us know how you find the prices there. I went there before Christmas last year, asked about their pots of poinsettia just to compare - and they were more expensive than Ace Hardware prices! A friend and I were looking for carpets/rugs. Bargained a rug quoted at AED 2,000 (by an Afghan) down to AED 200.... Be shameless in your bargaining! edited by crystalsindubai on 27/02/2012

I would say it's approximately an hours drive from Dubai using the Bypass Road up till the Sharjah Airport-Dhaid road. Don't know when exactly the market opens, but by 11 am on Fridays it certainly is open for business. And yes, quite touristy - many of the tour buses stop over there. And bargaining is definitely called for! edited by crystalsindubai on 26/02/2012

If you've seen one - multiply that by ten! They usually come out at night... I used Ridapest, tel 343 7663, they are fast and efficient. They use the spray only in the most necessary places, such as drains, etc. and gel in the rest. If you have children or pets, prepare to be out of the apartment / villa for 4 hours.

I would be very careful with all those sprays, even though they are touted to be safe.... they are very toxic! Be especially careful spraying the white goods which you are then using for your food. Why not call a pest control service yourself and ask then to use gel which are placed in strategic locations around your home. This would have to be repeated every 4-6 months, or so. In the meantime, use baking powder along doors, behind fridge, stove, and especially under the kitchen sink .

hello crystal, i hope ur point abt the parking is true in my cluster since we don't have a parking spot in our contract... let's hope for the best :) Hi again, Munnus, do check with your landlord if he has an assigned parking space, or inquire with the Facilities Management Office in your building. However, even if he does not, there IS ample parking... If there is assigned parking for your apartment, do not agree to be charged extra in case you are being asked to do so. edited by crystalsindubai on 28/01/2012

Hi munnus, I have lived in a very spacious apartment in the Lake View Tower (Cluster B) for 1 1/2 years now, and if I'm correct your tower is in Cluster C - so I can actually wave to you! I much prefer the generosity of space over here compared to the crowdedness (both in terms of space and people) of the Marina, and even though the general infrastructure is a bit "way behind" the metro bridge provides an easy connection. Wish you a good move to your new accommodation... hello Crystal... i hope we can gather when i move in and wave to each other more closely :D but what do u mean by the infrastructure is way behind the metro bridge? Oh dear, classical error of missing punctuation! should be reading: .... way behind; the metro bridge .... Other advantages of JLT over the Marina: - ample parking whereas the Marina is an absolute nightmare - generally more generous living area (large part of Marina apartments are small compared to JLT/JBR not considered)

not qualified or experienced (but since when has that ever stopped anyone posting on here lol),...i'd say that since signs cross over months they are different to birth stones..ie i'm a Gemini which is mid June and my stone will be for June but there will be the signs either side of me (er cancer and leo ??? just guessing) who are also June but different signs.... happy to be corrected by someone who actually knows what they are talking about lol That's my understanding as well. In the older civilization's teachings they would definitely have referred to zodiacs, the month stones being a more recent addtion. Each zodiac refers to approximately five or six birthstones (perhaps accounting for various facts such as ascending /descending, time of birth, etc.), whilst there is only one month stone which often is then also referring to one or the other zodiac that falls into this time frame. It does not mean, however, that you should not wear any other stone you fancy...

Another option would be to make an arrangement with a licenced shop wherein they agree to take in your hand-crafted goods a) on a consignment basis, or b) on a space-rental basis (fixed rate); this one "bending" the shop's own tenancy contract a bit, but often done inofficially. If you are looking for a permanent solution, this would be worth lookng into.

Im a Virgo, ascendant Aries (just found out ;) ) Birthstones for Virgo: Tiger eye, carnelian, lapis lazuli, imperial topaz, jasper, azurite, citrine Month stone for August: Peridot Month stone for September: Sapphire What does that mean? In many civilizations when choosing a lucky stone/jewelry, etc. they consider your zodia, month, day of your birth before deciding what one should wear. So here's your choice of personalized stones... if you like!
