I hate to throw a spanner in the works here re the Hilton Arcadia but we were there end of March, beg of April for what was supposed to be ten nights. It was a total disaster. OK my then 18 month old was sick with tonsilitis and the weather was monsoon rains and wind (total out of character weather for that time of year we were constantly told) ... anyway this wasn't the Hotel's fault but with both of these to contend with it meant we had to spend ALL our time in the Hotel and I couldn't get out of the place quick enough. First of all the room we were given was terrible (in the Sai Tong Wing) ... furthest wing away from main part of hotel, OLD and run down, bed so hard I couldn't sleep, noisy old fridge for mini bar housed in a rickety old cupboard, banging doors all night long, shower mouldy and leaking, broken lamp beside the bed, I could go on). For me though the worst part was the tiled floors with steps .... NOT GOOD for a toddler .... we complained and got moved to the Lotus Wing which was a vast improvement. Had to order room service on a few occasions which came with wrong order or cold. Restaurants IMO were mediocre ... very samey samey so I'm not sure if I'd recommend going for teh dinner option as you could get quite bored. Pools were lovely when we could finally venture into them after all that rain but they were cold and due to the weather they had a lot of dead bugs in them which I pointed out to staff who didn't seem too bothered to fix the problem. Staff on the whole were lovely and wanted nothing more than to spend time with our DD or take her away when we were having our dinner which was great. There was a good kids play room and the staff there were lovely and our DD enjoyed that alot - lets face it with the weather we were in there quite a bit ;o( I used the spa for a mani/pedi - Tips and Toes do a far superior job, my toes had smudged before I even got back to the room and the seats were uncomfortable, finishing at my lower back ... when she whipped the hairdryer out to dry the polish I thought to myself .... 5 star ... can't imagine Paris having her nails dried like that ... lol Anyway I'm sorry if this has thrown you but I wish I'd have had my review before I went there as I would never have booked it. Its advertised as 5 star and thats TOTAL false advertising IMO and you're still paying those sort of resort prices. I've done a review on Trip Advisor also as I just couldn't justify not warning future prospective holiday makers, I'm sure there are better out there. Ohh and I wouldn't rate the beach either that you had to cross a road to get to. anyway again only my tuppence worth, if you do go there my biggest piece of advice would be make sure you don't get shoved to the Sai Tong Wing - the rest we may have just been in bad luck!!!! Thanks Curly, yes looks like I will have the first June baby! Did you decide on your double pram? - I know we were discussing this on another thread! We ended up going with the P&T as I was in Bumble Bee and they had 10% off that day so I ended up getting a great deal. Our 19 month old has loved being pushed around in it but not sure how good she is going to be at going in the bottom...! I will keep you all posted and good luck to you all. Hi Alimart, am in a total quandry still about the double buggy. I actually didn't think we could get the P&Ts here so thats interesting. My 19 month old DD does not like being in a buggy ever, always preferring to run around herself or when in the malls she loves those little cars. Of course I don't always give in but at this stage of my pregnancy anything for a quiet life and me to get a bit of shopping done. I dont think she will like sitting in the back of the P&Ts at all. I really don't want to go down the road of forking out a load of cash for a buggy that won't get used to its maximum either. Was thinking of just using the baby bjorn for the baby and the stroller for DD for the first while until I go home with the two in august and then have a look around at home for more reasonably priced options. We'll see. You're lucky to have a bbay that will stay in yours. All the best, I'll let you know if I decide again on the buggy ... Curly

Hi suznz, delighted to hear you are happy with your care at Al Wasl also. From all accounts we and our babies are in the best place for medical care so thats a load off in any case. Have you asked re booking a private room? I don't know what the procedure is except it goes on availability. I am back again on Sunday week and will ask my questions for admission etc but just wondered. Curly

Hi all, I am 36 wks on Saturday, due June 14th. In general feeling good except have alot of pain "down below" so much so walking any length is not desirable. Not great when I have a 19 month old DD who is very active and wants lots of play time. I am going to Al Wasl and while all my appointments/scans with them or the clinic have been smooth and gone well I can't help start to get a bit anxious about the actual labour/delivery. I had my DD at Medcare and was induced due to water around her reducing in the last month. Therefore I kinda feel like I am doing it all for the first time - diff circumstances and diff hospital etc and no idea what doctor will actually deliver my baby ... anyway I'll hope for the best and at the end of the day I know the care both me and the baby will get will be good even if we have to forego the other ... Good luck all, keep us all posted .... Alimart, looks like you will prob the first of us to go ;o)

I really like the Observatory Brunch. It doesn't have the buzz of some of the other brunches but it could possibly have the most amazing views which go with a brunch. Also, nothing for the kids to do either but see you are not taking any! cheers babyrat, have done a search and it definitely gets good reviews .... so might be an option. No, no kids going except for the one in my belly ... am 35 wks preg so this will be my last. albeit sober, soiree before baby comes ... thanks again

thanks everyone for the feedback, Anise seems to be winning out from the list so that's one to definitely consider, esp when the entertainer have a special on this month. Can i throw one more into the mix, anyone know much about The Observatory Friday Brunch? Good, bad, prices, atmosphere. Will do a quick search on this too. thanks again Curly

Hi Ruthiebaby, the playgroup runs sunday monday and tuesday mornings ... not totally sure about what time it starts as I am always late but think from about 9am/9.30am and it runs until about 11.30. All ages up to maybe 4 I've seen there. There are different rooms with various different toys for the kids to play with and there is a room for painting/drawing ... one for reading/puzzles ... Its 15 dhs for one child and 20 dhs for 2 or more. After a couple of hours of free play everyone sits around in a circle with the kids and sing nursery rhymes. Yes getting a taxi from the marina won't be a problem although getting a taxi back might be an issue as its off the beaten track so unless you book a taxi to come back you may be stuck, unless you find another mum that is driving back to your area. Take the discovery gardens/jebel ali village exit ... and at the roundabout with Ibn Battuta on your left ... go right, left at next roundabout, at what seems like the end of the road ... past Jebel ali primary school and jebel ali hospital ... go right and keep going until you see the cluster of churches in front of you. You will notice all the cars parked in front of the church you are looking for ... i think its the evangelical church but can't be sure. Its a nice way to spend a morning for you and your LO. Curly

Oh, Curly, I hope I haven't freaked you out! ah no Green-ish, you haven't freaked me out (not so much, lol) but I am nervous about it all. I suppose the fact I am going to a different hospital this time I feel like I'm doing it for the first time. I am also quite nervous about my DH not being with me whenever I need him (although I know he'll be with me for the delivery). I have always heard that the medical care at Al Wasl is second to none so I knew I could forego the "frills" a private hospital has on offer - that part doesn't bother me. It does bother me though if the doctors don't treat me right. I have been seeing Dr Maria at Nad al Sheba for all my ante natal and she is so lovely. I might just mention to her about what I've heard here re attitudes etc. Also I will ask to meet with the head of ANC, thanks for that tip. Green-ish, I'm so happy to hear your birth experience was amazing, that itself has helped me calm down about it all. I hope I have the same type of experience. Zoeesta, I don't know what to say to you about changing hospitals at this stage. Once our insurance came through my DH asked if I wanted to change hospitals but at 33 wks I honestly couldn't be bothered with the hassle of it all, even though I know we'll probably end up paying upfront and claiming back too (not ideal at all). Up to this point I was quite happy to stick with Al Wasl but now I'm a bit nervous as I said. I think I'll just stick with it and hope for the best. Let me know what you decide and how you get on. thank you both for your replies and sorry for jumping on your thread Zoeesta CUrly edited by CurlyOB on 25/04/2011 edited by CurlyOB on 25/04/2011

thanks Green-ish, if I know we can get it back then it wont' be so bad although direct billing would be so much nicer ... but have a feeling that would be too much of an ask of Al Wasl Anyone else have more recent experience you could share? thanks Curly

Zoeesta, I am so sorry that you went through this awful ordeal and I hope you are feeling better and making a complaint also helps to make you feel better. Can you tell me the doctor's name? I am due to give birth at Al Wasl in 7 wks and reading this has freaked me out to be honest. Green-ish, you mention the attitude of some of the doctors ... can you elaborate? Forewarned is forearmed and all that? Curly

Hi this may be a stupid question but does Al Wasl accept insurance payment? I am 33 wks pregnant and going to Al Wasl to deliver. Our health insurance has jst been changed so that I am now fully covered for maternity whereas the last company didn't cover maternity until after a wait period of one year which ruled me out. I am not changing hospitals and am quite happy to deliver at Al Wasl but am just wondering now if our insurance will cover for the birth (I have already paid over the ante natal package). I suppose the reason I ask is everytime you walk into a private hospital the first thing they ask for is your insurance card (i delivered my DD at Medcare 19 months ago) but I've never been asked for any sort of insurance at Al Wasl - even though its still pricey enough for the full maternity package. Sorry this is a bit more long winded than intended .... any feedback would be welcome. Curly

we stayed in the Yas Rotana for the Stevie Wonder Concert and while I thought it was a great deal (2 nghts b&b plus 2 golden circle tickets) for 1500dhs I thought the hotel was so so - well more specifically the service in the restaurants. Room was fine and we had to get a babysitter for the concert and that worked out great. Shuttle Buses to and from concert were gret too.

we always fly Etihad AD direct to Dublin. We have a 18 month old DD so the direct route works best for us. We still have to get from Dublin to the west after we arrive but still feel this is our best option. Often more expensive than going through London, PAris or Amsterdam but to have just one flight, its worth the extra money. I know people who prefer to fly to London and then get a connecting to Cork so that may work better for you. Curly

Hey just wondering, those of you who have travelled with LOs to Phuket on your hols, what do you recommend me taking for my 18 month old DD and/what can I get there? Do I need to take enough nappies for 2 wks or how about formula? She won't drink cow's milk so is on the 1-3 year old formula? I'm guessing I will be able to get nappies but her particular formula might be an issue, maybe? Any other suggestions? Did I hear right that there is a TESCO in Patong? Going on Friday so would appreciate any and all advice. Thanks for your help Curly

Well done Ireland...but WHY do you only ever turn up against England????? Not looking particularly good for the NH against the SH in the WC... Ireland will have had more reason to win to stop England having the grand slam - thats it - end of Zackly Pepps .... and they did turn up against Wales, albeit not as well as they should have .... wales being awarded an illegal try didn't help our case ...

He was FANTASIC, such a genuis and an absolute legend .... I just loved his sense of humour and the way he can laugh at himself and make jokes at his own expense .... the bit when the guy was helping him get the right setting on the keyboard and it was taking so long he said that if he took off his glasses he'd do it himself .... so funny!!! It was my sister's birthday yesterday and she saw Stevie last yr so I called her during the Happy Birthday song - it made her day ..... Such a fantastic night and yes I would have liked him to have started on time as at 28 wks pregnantm standing in the golden circle section I was ready to collapse by the end, not to mention having told the babysitter in the hotel tat I'd be back earlier. All in all a fantastic experience. ETA - what an amazing entrance too!!!!! edited by CurlyOB on 19/03/2011

go to carrefour and buy those mini fabric fold up chairs . they are 20aed and are great for concerts. Golden circle will have loads of space so sit a little further back, relax and enjoy the concert. we are taking ours as I cant stand for long without passing out. you might need a hand getting out of the chair afterwards if you are 28 weeks though!!! edited by Zaabs on 17/03/2011 Yes indeed I probably will need help getting up ... lol good idea re the chairs, will we be allowed to bring them in for sure?

Yes, passport copies and passport photos very important. Also as far as I remember I went to Al Badaa Clinic which is behind the Crowne Plaza on SZR. Before I went there I had to have a form filled and I had to go to a typing centre in Satwa for them to do this before I could get medical done in Al Badaa. Good luck.

not sure which one you mean but am thinking the one opposite Dubai College? If its this one, from Emirates Hill, drive over Hessa St, over the SZR as if you heading over towards Al Sufouh Rd/Beach Road. You will see yellow signs saying Diversion Ahead - these relate to not being able to turn right onto Al Sufouh Road ... Anyway keep to these diversion signs and take the last right turn before Al Sufouh Road and the park is on your right. Lovely little park. Curly

Irish Ball was on last weekend for some reason, normally on weekend of Paddys but not this year. Irish Village a good spot to go with the kiddies during the day alright and great craic at night for us adults. I was there two years ago for the night and the amount of various nationalities going around with Irish TShirts etc was unreal. I know some friends going to Meydan to see Sharon Corr. Thank you Ashes from coming back to me. This is good to hear. I did visit a few (well maybe 7 or 8) nurseries and Kids Island did come out on top for me. Its great to hear such good feedback from an actual parent so thanks for that. ONLY thing I have to say I don't like about Kids Island is their fee structure ... apart from it being expensive (but what Nursery isn't!!!!) I don't like the fact they ask for 3000 dhs as a non refundable registration fee, one thousand going against first, second and third trimesters ... no problem if DD goes for full year but what happens if God forbid DH loses his job and we have to leave (lets face it DH is in constuction in Dubai, safe for now but under no illusions) - do we lose the unused registration fee? I know this is a question for Kids Island Management so just gently venting here .... Anyway thanks again Ashes for taking the time to respond with such good feedback. Curly

Hi Alimart, I thought I had this one sorted too with the P&Ts but like the look of this city select too. its alot of money to fork out without actually seeing it in real life isn't it? My SIL is coming over in April (a month before due date) so thats an option for me although no doubt it will be hassle for her. I will be like a stroller stalker in the malls again over the coming weeks checking every double stroller I see out ... thanks for name of company that will ship here, I will check them out in the mean time. Will keep you posted if I see any. Cheers, Curly
