I don't think there is a reasonable time for party music. It can go on all night if it is inside or at a decent level outside. This music was so loud that it was 3 villas down and a row up and I could hear it to the point that it kept us awake with all of our doors and sliders closed. Seriously blaring! I don't expect people to coordinate when they are having parties. That is just silly. Most people know to turn the music down a bit or move the party inside once it gets late. I hear neighbours all the time and I am sure they hear us. But this was just too much. Honestly I have to admit I don't mind it's raining men too much and taste in music does thankfully differ but this was like being forced to listen to a cheap cable radio station called the worst of the 90's! edited by daisydai on 02/02/2013

I myself was forced to listen to Wilson Phillips and The Weather Girl's It's Raining Men full blast last night until 11:00 pm. It was tortuous! It is even more annoying when the music is horrible! I am all for my neighbours enjoying themselves but when the party gets late it is only considerate to move it inside or turn the music down. My poor DH had a 1:00 am pick up and was trying desperately to get some sleep. edited by daisydai on 02/02/2013

For your daughter: wash hair with the nit shampoo. Then sit in front of TV under a bright light and go through her hair strand by strand from one side to the other and from top of the haed to back of the neck, (with my daughter this took two or three full length Disney movies) picking out the nits as you see them (I found often even the metal nit comb didn't comb them out properly). Repeat the combing of wet hair 2 or three days morning and evening, keeping hair tightly braided the rest of the day. Wash all hats and fabric hair accesories, lay metal and plastic hair clips in bailing water or bleach, put non washable hair accessories in plastic bag in feezer. Wash all bedding , stuffed animals blankets as hot as they tolerate (consider changing bedding every day until the nits are gone), vacuum carpets, sofas and carseats. Inform your daughters class teacher so other children can be checked if they have nits , otherwise your daughter will go bck to school and get them back. Same for everyone shehas close contact with. In the future keep your daughters hair pulled together or even better braided whenever she will be in school or other placces with lots of kids. Discourage the sharing of hair accessories, brushes and hats Consider to put leave in conditioner or hair oil on her hair before you braid it (it will discourage lice from climbing up) For yourself would suggest to get a hair color, I heard that the chemicals in hair dye also kill the lice, and have someone go through your hair with a (different from your daughters) nit comb. My suggestion exactly. My 8 and 3 yo DDs had it last summer - consequently myself and even a dolly got it as I did not know what I was doing. We had them for a month. I seriously still have nightmares about lice and nits. One very, very important thing to know when you are dealing with lice is that the treatments and medicated shampoos etc only work on lice and not their nits. *The shampoo will kill the lice but the nits will still be alive*. You must remove EVERY SINGLE tiny nit or else you will have a re-infestation. It is a two step process. You must remove any and all lice and their nits in a different fashion. If you use the shampoo and believe that it kills the lice and their nits you will find yourself in big trouble as I did. Through conversation with many other Mom's this is where it also got away from them as the treatments and lit sent home from the school is not clear about this. After the lice treatment you must go through the hair strand by strand and physically remove any nits. They are usually closer to the scalp. They appear white after they have been laid, turn darker before they hatch ( aurgh just a second I just had massive flashbacks and an skin crawl) and after they hatch there is often a clear shell of the egg still attached to the hair shaft. Google nits and look at the images to make sure you know what you are looking for. General rule of thumb is that if you see something that looks like a little flake try to dust it away. If it falls away it is just dry scalp but if it is stuck like glue to the hair shaft it is a nit. Combing does not always work. Like Lillie34 I had to section off my DD's hair and scour through each piece strand by strand. When I found a nit I had to use my thumb nail to pull it down and off of the hair shaft and then put it in to a paper cup that I then put right outside in the trash. This does take hours. We also had movies, lollipops, a very strong work light and my reading glasses. It is not fun let me tell you but you can spend hours doing this miss just one stupid tiny little nit and have a total re-infestation so you must be very diligent when looking or it is all for not. I washed bedding daily and put big plastic garbage bags over our pillows under the pillow cases until I was sure they were completely gone. I also laundered every stuffie or put it in the freezer over night and they did not come back out until I was sure the lice were gone. I also threw out all of our hair brushes. Every time after using a hairbrush or hair accessary it went in to the freezer. I know it sounds crazy but I am a crazy neat freak and they completely took over my house and life for a month. You need to get in control and stay in control from the get go . Unless, you just want to pull a Brittany and shave everyone's heads which I promise you I did consider. There is more. Like Lillie mentioned you can very easily do all of this and send your child back to school only to have them catch another louse at school. You have to educate them not to share sun hats, swim towels, dress up and costume hats at places like Kidzania. I had one nurse tell me that all of the young girls pass lice around like wildfire because they have their hair down at school and are constantly hugging each other. When they hug they have their heads touching and have their hair falling all over each other. Also check to make sure your child's class does not have a hat box. Hat box = lice paradise! I have received 4 emails from DD's school in the last month about more and more students in her class having lice. I buy spray in conditioner and add tea tree oil and lavender to it. I spray her hair every morning and tie it up in a high pony and a braid or a french braid. I know I have basically said what Lillie did but she is spot on and you must do it. The only way to get rid of the lice is to remove every nit and remember where there is lice there are nits and where there are nits there are lice.

I'd love to be able to shop there, but it's too far away. I live in the Ranches, and since hubby and I both work long hours we usually only have time to stop at Spinneys or Geant on the way home. Not the best quality meat, but it could be worse. If you post your email I can send you some recipes, or I'd be happy to meet you for a coffee and give you some ideas...and we can commiserate about how much we miss the rain :) Hi Mrs. Canuck. Hi daisydai, I'm glad to hear you're taking a look at paleo! I've always been a bit wary of those "cleanse" programs - they just flush everything out of you and make you feel weak for days on end. Not healthy! If you regularly stick to a clean diet you won't need any "cleansing." I started reading up on paleo a couple of years ago. I'd always had a number of health issues (nothing life-threatening, just things that made me really uncomfortable), and a friend pointed me to this website: http://whole9life.com/category/whole-30/ I decided to do the 30-day challenge, and it was the best thing I ever did for myself. Yes, the first couple of week were difficult cravings-wise. I felt hungry all the time for a few days, because my body was adjusting to the lack of simple carbs. But within 2 days, the painful bloating I'd always suffered from disappeared. Within a week, I was wearing pants I hadn't worn for years. Within 2 weeks, my energy levels soared, my skin cleared up, I started sleeping well for the first time in my life, and I just felt generally good. At the end of that month I had lost 12 pounds, and that was without exercising. It was amazing. After that, I maintained the diet at about a 90% level and started getting a lot of exercise. Over about 6 months, I lost a total of 30 pounds and went from a size 10 to a 2 (American sizing). I now maintain the diet at about an 80% level, and I've kept the weight off and still feel good. I absolutely recommend this lifestyle to anyone. And it's just that - a lifestyle. Not a crash diet. If you need extra inspiration, this is a great website: http://robbwolf.com/paleo-testimonials/ If you're struggling to find decent recipes or don't know how/what to order in restaurants, I'm happy to share some of the things I've come up with. Let me know! PS: I also moved here from Vancouver in August :) No way! That is too funny! I will read the website tonight when the girls are in bed. Will definitely take you up on the offer for help with the change. A question - where do you buy all of your meat? the Organic Grocery cafe?

Thanks and thanks! Will check out those sites. I did see the one about the couples and the kettle bells. Very cute. It is interesting how paleo seems to go hand in hand with cross fit too. I have been wanting to try a cross fit class. I read about a great cross fit gym in Dubai in one of the fitness mags last month - think it was the Reebok one. It all just seems like such a stretch from where I am now. I ate vegetarian and vegan for years and to this day eat scarce amounts of meat. I am really just a tofu loving yogi so going "primal" to me seems just so uncomfortable! I am up for the challenge though. I read Wheat Belly when it came out and found it amazingly interesting. My DH was undiagnosed until I read that book. Still blown away our GP and Dentist missed all of the signs. Really goes to show how aware you must be and to what degree you must advocate for your family's health. I found the chapters about the effects of gluten on the brain incredibly interesting. A very good friend of mine's Daughter was diagnosed with ADHD. I told her about my readings in Wheat Belly about gluten and ADHD etc. She was very skeptical but read the book and consequently removed gluten from her DD's diet as a trial . Her Daughter no longer has the problems she was having in the classroom. My girlfriend feels she can control her ADHD with diet and does not give her any medication. The bit on schizophrenia was so interesting too was it not? Oops looks like this should perhaps be in the book review category! edited by daisydai on 14/12/2012

Are all the hairdressers at Sheba English / Irish ? Who would be the best for highlights ? Thanks ! The only one that I have ever send there is Michelle. She did an amazing job with my highlights. I am extremely picky with my hair. I also have long very thick hair that is not very easy to highlight.

Just a little heads up in re to Sheba Beauty lounge - you may pay with your card but they will not put a tip on the total for you. You must bring cash for the tip. This may be the norm here in DXB don't know. It just really took me off guard and I was unprepared as I am used to just adding the tip to my total and putting it on my card.

If your going to souq naif you have to go early in the morning or with a taxi. Getting parking is almost impossible and it gets very congested. Souq naif defnitely has the biggest range and the best prices of material in Dubai. Loads of little shops around naif area. Okay- finally heading to Souq Naïf tomorrow. How early is early? What time should we go?

It is really delicious when you make it on your own. Well semi-make it ;) Buy blanched sliced almonds and just buzz it for a few seconds in your food processor. Not too long or you will end up with a paste. I find it only takes a second and tastes a bit nuttier.

Whole grain unprocessed oats and/or steel cut oats are the ones that take the time. I have been doing them in the crockpot for the last few years. My kids love it. I put out things like raisins, dried cranberries, shredded coconut, maple syrup, honey, nuts, etc.. and let them put on their own toppings. Bob's Red Mill whole grain hot cereals are the ones that I prefer and I have seen them at the Organic store and lots of other grocers. Coat the liner with cooking spray, use a ratio of 1 cup grain to 31⁄2 to 4 cups water, and cook on Low overnight for 8 to 12 hours. Enjoy.

Its just sat in a cupboard (was uncool for my son)! and a new swimming cap (if she happens to be in leopards/yellow house) edited by roysie on 11/10/2012 Thanks Roysie. That's very kind of you. I am off to buy her new uni tomorrow. 2 full unis in just over 1 month! Eek. I must admit this uni is far cuter than the last. I love the little sundresses. She is in the blue house however so we will have to pass on the swim cap.

Thanks for all of your replies. Very helpful. I agree Uptown looks like a great school but is an IB and we were looking for BC. DESS is also wonderful and were in there just yesterday. DD may have a spot for at DESS in January but there is no guarantee. She may have to wait until next September. The school she is currently attending is not suitable (ahem) and we really need to switch her before the cut off in January. I was kind of thinking we do the drive and if it is just too unbearable and we love the school as much as we think we will consider moving to a different community.

We had quotes and samples from 3 different companies. We ended up going with Timco Curtains. The fellows name is Kumar and he is a doll. Very easy to deal with and understand. He did all of our curtains and did an excellent job. His number is 050 7310531. Another company that some people use is Amrit. I have had a few friends tell me horror stories about them. Their prices and samples were okay but there was so much lost in translation in just getting the prices and samples that I was not confident in ordering custom curtains. Kumar had all of our curtains up within the week and they are exactly what I wanted. I can not recommend him enough. Have fun!

I know. It really is a no win situation. I really hate to complain and be that Parent. If she does make the team because I kick up a fuss it would be horrible for her. I guess I am just venting about the whole situation. It just seems wrong to me. Shouldn't they have to have a certain amount girls and boys on a coed team? Oh well..... Thanks for your thoughts.

So, my Daughter tried out for her school's soccer team this past week. Keep in mind that she is a strong player. She has played since she was 4 years old and just this past summer before leaving Canada took two quite intensive soccer clinics. Anyhow, I am sure you know where I am going with this. She did not make the team. I am not upset that she did not make the team. I am sad for her but realize that this is a good learning opportunity and will help inspire her to work harder..... What has me upset is that apparently the year 3 team is supposed to be a coed team. There are however no girls on this supposed coed team. Fundamentally it can not be a coed team if there are not girls and boys on the team. It is simply a boys team. I was told that the two girls that tried out for the team were simply not up to the level of the other players that made the team. Now I have coached and played competitive sport in Canada for years and know that at age 8 most boys will be 50% stronger on the field than girls. The boys are generally more aggressive on the field than the girls at this age. Now remember I said generally before anyone tries to jump down my throat. According to my Daughter the try out consisted of a general scrimmage and did not do much to any skill drills. So, is this the way the school teams are generally run here in Dubai or is it simply this school? Has anyone else with a Daughter in sport here had this or a similar experience? My big question is do I approach the school and kick up a fuss and advocate for my Daughter or do I just accept this as the way things go here in Dubai.

Hi Can anyone tell me kid friendly restaurants that can cater for coeliac disease? Any advise would be gratefully appreciated! Thanks edited by pocketrocket on 12/09/2012 Carluccio's has a GF menu. No child menu but they have a few basic pasta dishes. We took our kids for a g-free supper at Carluccio's at Dubai mall last week and they loved it. You can order the kid's pasta meal off of the kid's menu and they just make it with g-free noodles. Really nothing special but they had g-free ice cream, sat by the window and watched the fountains and received a balloon animal so they were thrilled.

Wow! Thanks for all of the replies ladies. Super happy to hear That our friend's claim was not true. I am now sort of thinking it is my Husband's attempt to save $10,000dhs. The quote was from Move One and I am hoping it is a bit high. MaryCatherine, If you do not mind me asking what company did you use to move your cats? Milly Is an indoor/outdoor cat but really prefers to spend her days sleepIng on my Daughter's bed so I don't think she will have a tough transition. Ew I will have to have a litter box in the villa though won't I? We should find out later this month where we will be living. If we live in a busy area I will probably keep her as as an inside cat. As long as she is getting lots of attention she will not miss the great outdoors. She is actually afraid of bugs! Thanks again.
