Just had friends go through this, technically yes but possible without. His visa was cancelled months ago and has been doing visa runs (not sure about legalities) but he got away with it. He had copies of expired visa and had to jump through hoops girl at desk just kept say "I.D. I.D" etc and no matter how many times he explained she wouldn't budge to in time honoured Dubai tradition he queued again and saw a different member of staff and hey ho no problems all sorted in double quick time!

Any hotels in the Marina/JLT area are accessible it's only 15 mins or so from there to Sports City. There is also Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel might be worth looking at.

Ripe has organic chicken breasts from Turkey. . That always makes me laugh.... ??? Teagal - i think is barn raised..... which is not great (could be wrong thou) You're right Izzy, Tegel is barn raised, but in the absence of Organic Chicken at an affordable price and lack of availability makes this my preferred choice due to their commitment to no hormones and no genetically modified animals.

Ripe has organic chicken breasts from Turkey. Spinneys stock organic pork from Kenya. Although not organic Tegel Chicken available in Spinneys and Waitrose are pretty good and are hormone free. Park and Shop sell very small whole organic chickens.

7000 euro per month is OK if there is a decent +benefits package on top of the basic i.e. housing allowance, car allowance, school fees, health insurance and flights home every year. Many companies pay as low as possible basic wage as this is what is used to work out gratuity when you leave and boost your day to day pay with generous allowances.

Thanks Dally but specifically looking for the book as visitors will be using it too :) If they have wifi on a smart phone you can give them your account details and load it to their phone. Can you not buy direct at the Entertainer offices? Alternatively I'd buy from Spinneys if you have HSBC credit card that earns airmiles and also use card and earn double points. edited by dally on 05/01/2015

I would say that's a reasonable price for a root canal and also a crown. However, if you want a second opinion I can recommend Dr. Hamdy at the German Dental Centre on JLT - 04 449 5335. DH and I both go there and if he hasn't changed his pricing structure in the last six months, he doesn't charge for a consultation, plus his prices are very reasonable. DH had a root canal and subsequent crown at his last visit and I think it was 2,400 altogether. I had a root canal and crown at German Dental Centre Dec 2013/Jan 2014 and the final bill came to 5800 it was paid over three instalments during treatment and included him bringing a specialist to do the root canal. There are two German Dental Clinics on JLT, one of which is in Tiffany Tower and called German Dental and Neuromuscular Clinic. Dr. Hamdy, who is an oral surgeon and a special implantologist, is in the HDS Business Centre tower. He has done two root canals for DH so just wondering if there was a particular reason another surgeon was called in. It was def Dr Hamdy and he said it was because it was one of my back teeth with two roots and needed a specialist. She was very good and gentle and I don't have any complaints about the service I received I was just posting my costs as reference for the OP.

We will def be forced to downsize, moving further out. Should have done it last year but due to health issues/visitors etc couldn't do it then. Rents going crazy, no wage or allowance increases in 6 years means our standard of living/saving potential has dropped significantly over recent years. I think the writing is on the wall that we won't be here that much longer. The reasons for being here are quickly being eroded so it might be time to dust off the packing boxes and suitcases a lot sooner than we'd hoped.

Heading towards Sharjah on al Wasl road take the next exit right after the Iranian hospital (not the exit at the hospital but the next one) continue on this road till you get to satwa roundabout, take first exit from the roundabout, on this street on your right hand you will find deepaks/deepa/regal/fido for finishings(opposite emirates post). You can park at one place and walk thru for exploration for the first time.hope this helps!. Or head up SZR to trade centre roundabout go all the way round to the I think the third exit, continue to the Satwa roundabout and take third exit and you'll be at the same point as previous directions. edited by dally on 26/11/2014

There have been lots of threads lately on this matter, please use the search facility and read through some. You'll find them so useful - one point I'd like to make is - see the best, not the most convenient, it's too important an issue to not give yourself the best possible support. I saw Dr Sama Zibdeh at Emirates Hospital, Jumeirah Beach Road. She was professional, knowledgeable and very approachable. edited by dally on 08/11/2014

DH often does this as most brunches don't offer his preferred tipple so orders the non alcoholic package then just pays extra for his drinks. But as Yorky says the difference can often be minimal so best check out the prices first.

Sanbona is fantastic, stayed there February 2013 and would go back in an instant. We stayed three nights (discount for 3 or more nights) we stayed in the tented dwyka accomodation, which is geared more to couples but they also have family friendly accomodation. Its not a full of safari, like Kruger, Serengti etc, it's more of a conservation area being restocked with animals, you have to go looking for the animals, which to us made it a much better experience. Sanbona is part of the Shamwari group and has a great reputation. I don't think a day trip would get the most out of the experience. As the game drives are early morning, returning for breakfast and early evening, returning for dinner when then animals are at their most active. Leave a message if you'd like more information, we've just sent a load of pics and info to our good friends in UK recommending Sanbona to them which I would gladly pass on to you.

Hi sm81, Have you checked out Chris Woollams website? I heard him speak last year in Dubai and he made me think long and hard regarding diet and also household and toiletry items. Check out his book The Rainbow Diet. I have made a conscious effort to reduce the Paraben and Aluminium content in products, especially if you have an oestrogen based cancer. Some will say the link between parabens and cancer isn't proven, but I think everyone in this situation has to read up as much as they can and make decisions based on what makes you comfortable. If you want any information on paraben and aluminium free products, post your email address and I will contact you. I am not in Dubai at the moment, but hope to return by mid October and I will root out a leaflet I got from his talk and pass the details on to you if you want.

Common occurrence here in Dubai, most shops include the packaging in the weight calculations. I often think to complain but save my breath as I don't think it's a concept here they'd understand or change. I know at the deli, meat counters at home they put the empty container on the scales and then zero the scales before adding your produce so you are only changed for the actual weight of the product. But as we are consistently reminded, we aren't at home we're here in Dubai so suck it up or ship out!

Great point LT regarding the north. Recently visited Cyprus and went to the Famagusta viewpoint at Deryneia and picked up loads of literature regarding the 1974 invasion of Northern Cyprus. Leaflets warning of the pitfalls, dangers and legalities about buying property in the North made for interesting reading. Obviously this is only one version of the story but something potential buyers should be aware of. We have friends who have had a property in Cyprus for 8 years, as an investment it's not doing great as values have dropped significantly and rental income has also reduced considerably but if you are looking at it as a second home and take the long term view now is probably a good time to buy.

If your insurance covers you back in the UK I'd opt to go to UK every time. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 months ago and whilst I was happy with the treatment I received prior to operation here in Dubai and had every test known to man done and given a clean bill of health apart from the BC I suspect some of these check ups were more financially driven rather than medically needed. I was happy with my choice of surgeon, however after much deliberation and research I opted to go back to the UK for the surgery and subsequent radiotherapy. One of the most over riding factors was being confident that my surgeon would probably still be around for the following years check ups, being able to discuss success / survival rates etc. Here in Dubai medical professionals and indeed patients are so transient it is difficult to gain précis figures. The surgeon I selected indeed is top of his field and subsequently I found out that he operated successfully on a friend of mine 11 years ago - that sort of statistic would be difficult to find here. One other reason was the quality and experience of the auxiliary medical staff provided here in Dubai, whilst on the customer care front they are very good, I do have doubts about some of their competency levels. Also having the support of family and friends back home was an over riding factor. Good luck with your decision and speedy recovery. edited by dally on 20/08/2014

If you bought the cheapest fares i.e. Saver tickets you can't upgrade until 24 hrs before flight. If you go to check in on line you can try to upgrade before checking in or failing that at the airport at point of departure if there's any seats available. You also now have to pay "local and airport taxes" so not the bargain it used to be. edited by dally on 14/08/2014

Check out website https://www.gov.uk/childcare-vouchers-better-off-calculator it will take you through the stages to work out if you are better off getting the employers child are vouchers or not as they affect how much tax credits you get. You will need to know how much your child are costs are to get a realistic result. On the salary you were quoting you would probably be entitled to a maximum voucher benefit of £28 per week towards childcare costs. edited by dally on 12/08/2014

You should not be flying whilst still infectious i.e. 5-7 days after the spots appear usually once the last spot has crusted over. You really need to ask GP for "fit to fly" letter to prevent being stopped from boarding your flight. Phone your airline for advice if unsure. I have seen them in Dragonmart (mind you it was over a year ago) in a shop that sold Chinese type souvenirs about half way through the mall. But I would save your money, the glue sticking the paper to the bamboo slats melts in the intense heat here and they quickly drop to bits. I'd just stick to bright coloured umbrellas. I bought a material one on holiday in Malta, it does look pretty but the umbrellas actually do a better job.
