Have you thought about dehydration? Are they drinking enough water? If their urine is dark it's a good indicator that they aren't drinking enough water. Sorry if this sound patronising, but it's a common problem that we tend to overlook and we simply forget how much fluids the body needs in this heat.

Probably too late now for this Friday, but Fibber Magees Friday afternoon deal (12-4 I think) is hard to beat. Trad Roast Beef Dinner or Full Irish Breakfast and a drink for 55aed and its one of the best roast dinners I've ever had in Dubai.

I usually draw the money out here in Dubai and change into sterling, the rate is usually better here than in UK. I don't know what the banks from here charge when withdrawing money abroad but on past experience with UK banks using ATMs abroad they charge quite a substantial surcharge so I usually avoid doing so.

It depends on who you are flying with and where to. To/from Uk usually a bag up to 32kg is allowed (Emirates). You can pool to one bag if you are both on the same booking with same ref number. Best to check on your airlines website. edited by dally on 28/07/2014

I think the restaurant is open, it usually is. You used to have to be signed in by a member at the Lakes but maybe alternatively you could go to Jumeirah Islands. The restaurant has been open all of Ramadan it's now called The Reform Social and Grill and they do a mean full breakfast English Breakfast ?

Is your DH's company paying for your visa, or just doing it on your DH's behalf and reclaiming the costs from him? The reason I ask is, you don't have to leave the country and re-enter to get your visa, but the visa is cheaper if it is processed whilst you are out of the country and this could be the reason the company is telling him this is the procedure. If your DH has to pay the costs then he could tell the company that he is will to pay the extra costs involved himself to save you the inconvenience of having to leave and then come back.

Oh to chew and eat At chicken feet Plus other unmentionables Or dine at hotels fashionable Will multiply the cost of Dubai by factors of ten fold So now you've been told The choice is yours Whether to have sore jaws From chewing on feets and other such treats In order to save some dimes (TB!!fast running out of rhymes...) edited by Sugarbeach on 20/07/2014 There once was a lass who hadn't tried Sind Punjab how sad, she didn't know it was fab though the others coaxed her and said, "just give it a try" she said NO as she thought there'd be chickens' feet a-fry Just go, EW said, you're in for a treat Alas still no she said, afraid of The Feet We've never seen Feet on the menu, they said But still, the EWer shook her head Then one hot day, (it was 50 the car read) young Dally sneaked to Karama not long before bed And filled up her plate with delights so many and when it came to her bill! Hardly a penny! And then she came back to post her delight and to say ne'er a chicken foot had been in sight And to this day if you ask her, where shall we go? To Sind Punjab, she cries! I'm now in the know! Thrilled to be called "young" Dally, but sorry I'll still pass on eating at such places. I did eat or should I say attempt to eat at one such buffet restaurant quite a few years ago and deep fried chicken feet and other dubious dishes were available. But since I am recently recovering from cancer I am getting very particular in sourcing my food options as much as practicable. Pesticides that have been proven to be carcinogenic and banned in many western countries are still widely used in Pakistan, India, China etc I therefore boycott these foods suppliers as much as possible. - sorry if this thread has gone slightly off topic.

I was quoted 300 in 2011 at Nicholas & Asp so your quotes seem to be the going rates. Try German Dental at JLT their rates for treatment seemed slightly less expensive or search out the recommended dentist in Karama that seems to get frequently mentioned on EW.

What would I be eating for 20 :O Probably exactly the same thing you'd eat if it were 200 per person in a hotel! ;) Yeah if you like deep fried chicken feet and other unmentionable and unidentifiable foods, go for it, personally I'd rather go without than eat in some of the "bargain" places.

Hi we are also moving to dubai in sept. Personally I'm terrified I'm in my fifties no kids, they are all to be left in the uk! What do women do to fill their days I'm so worried I will be bored. We are thinking of living in the downtown area as husband will commute to sharjah, have been told that it's nicer for ladies in dubai ? Help please There is a huge expat wives community in Dubai, many gave up jobs in their home countries to support their husbands here. There are the expat woman coffee mornings for starters, there are lots of other "women's group" desert daisies, marina mermaids, Arabian ranches, palm palls, desert wives to name but a few and all will have Facebook pages. There are Mah-Jong groups, choir groups, book clubs, craft clubs etc. once you find your feet and get out and about, you'll probably 'click' with one or two ladies and it's surprising how long a meet up for a cup of coffee can last.

Some meds are relatively cheap, others are very, very expensive - one I am on is 1036.50 aed for 1 month's supply and I have to take it for 5-10 years! Luckily our insurance pays up in full. We have Oman/BUPA insurance which I expect is one of the more expensive policies but they are probably one of the very few that cover pre-existing conditions.

Excuse my ignorance but why can't the consulate give out new passports? For security reasons, too many blank passports were going missing in transit worldwide and ending up in the wrong hands. How many times has there been cases (including here) where attacks/murders have been committed and it's been proved they people involved were using fake passports? edited by dally on 25/05/2014

I spoke to someone today and I have asked for them to return my passport to me. I will then get my sister to send the forms to me and I'll get her to do the day service at a passport agency in the uk. Not sure why it's all so complicated. Germany was fab!!!! edited by RLJ on 19/05/2014 so you will get your sister to do it for you, would you be in the country when she does it, if you were you could do it yourself... they will not allow anyone else to do it for you if you are not in the uk at the time of applying.... they can check you know. the forms for overseas are different to the uk ones apparently. also you then have lost the application fee and would have to pay again! edited by busybee2 on 19/05/2014 I was just about to say virtually the same thing - you have to be in UK to use one day service. DH did this in Feb even though his passport doesn't run out till Nov prior planning does pay dividends.

I'd check out http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/downloadFile?contentID=HMCE_PROD_010856 as you can't bring in anything with meat/dairy from outside EU including pot noodles containing meat and cereals if include milk etc. just because some people bring them through with no problems doesn't mean it's actually allowed. If in doubt and you still want to take them through you could always have them easily available in your luggage and ask customs for advise on arrival. They'll be more than happy to assist. If can remember bringing honey back from NZ and as it wasn't clear if this was allowed I just asked, they had a quick look and I was allowed to bring it through no probs.

Hi, there are other oncology departments in the private sector the ones your doctor quoted I think are in government hospitals. I had an initial consultation with Dr Maroun El Khoury at American Hospital. He was very professional and had a lovely manner. He was one of the recommendations from my surgeon together with the oncologists from the two places you mentioned. However I did not continue treatment with him as I decided to return to the UK and had my treatment there as my insurance has international cover. However if it's just a one off treatment then I think I would give serious consideration to both Al Ain and Abu Dhabi as they will certainly be very experienced and have dealt with the majority of cases in UAE. The reason I discounted them were for logistical reasons as I would have had to go 5 days a week for 6 weeks and I think the travelling would have been too tiring to consider.

So sorry to hear your news, I went through diagnosis, surgery and treatment starting Sept last year. Please read some of my previous posts. The important thing is to be confident in the advise you are given and don't be frightened to ask questions or indeed seek second opinions. Have you chosen your surgeon? After considerable research I narrowed my choices to 3 here in Dubai, but after much consideration I decided to go home (UK) for treatment - thankfully my insurance covered the cost so no burden was placed on the NHS. I had fantastic treatment and I am fighting fit, I took lots of advice on supplements and super foods to build myself up and sought help and support whenever it was offered. I have one friend back in the UK who elected for double preventative mastectomy due to family history and is pleased with the outcome. I am concerned with advice given in Dubai as I feel a lot of it is finance driven as opposed to best practice driven. Does your insurance company offer an independent second opinion service? (BUPA) does, they take on board your choices, seek all your test results and the independent panel give you impartial advice. Your head will be swimming, you have some important decisions to make, make them in the best interests of YOU. Look after yourself and if you feel the need to chat to someone who has been through it please post contact details and I'd be happy to chat and talk things through with you. edited by dally on 19/03/2014

Sorry Angelina, can't give any recommendations apart from Medcare Ortho Hospital seems to get good feedback. But from my own personal experience I would say the actual surgeon may be well qualified and competent but I have many doubts about the supporting staff. I have had minor Ortho surgery here and luckily all went well, but in September when I was diagnosed with breast cancer after much research and discussion I decided to go back to my home country for surgery and subsequent treatment (luckily we have international health cover and my insurance paid for all my treatment privately in the UK) One of the problems here is that surgeons and patients are very transient here and there is no real data on success rates and outcomes that can be researched. The surgeon I chose actually did the surgery on a friend of mine over 10 years ago and has just celebrated her 10 year milestone. How many people can say that here? My DH had operations on both hips (hip resurfacing) about 12 years ago privately in the UK and when we return on a visit this month he has made appointments to see him for a follow up - again could anyone guarantee here seeing the same surgeon 12 years post op? Good luck with your search.

Just thought I'd give you lovely ladies an update. I have now finished my 3 weeks of radiotherapy, which I had in the UK, returned to Dubai just in time for Christmas. Very little side effects, my underarm took on the look of a very bad sunburn, the skin darkened and peeled and was quite sore, but that has now improved greatly and looks as good as new. I sometimes feel a bit emotional and sometimes 'hit a brick wall' of fatigue but all in all doing great. The biggest stress has been waiting over 3 weeks for insurance approval for my medication (which I'll have to take for at least 5 years) the problem is here that they only stock the licensed make and none of the generic makes therefore it is very expensive 1036.50 aed per 28 day supply ouch! Funny how they approved the tests, the surgery and radiotherapy, but wanted more info before they'd approve the tablets! How much more information do they need? Still finally got approval this week so now looking forward to a stress free, healthy future. Many thanks for all the kind words and prayers from EW members you have made this journey all the bearable.

Gosh if these prices are correct they are outrageous! I was diagnosed with breast cancer here in Dubai in September and whilst I can't fault the initial treatment I received here, for a few reasons I decided to return to the UK for treatment (still private as I had international cover by my insurance provider) full treatment of radiotherapy was about £250 (1500 aed) compared to what you have quoted for the American hospital 120,000! Hope all goes well for you Bpage, sending you positive vibes. Hi happygolucky. Sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis but I'm sure she will get through it. I was diagnosed with breast cancer last March and I'm almost done with the treatment (still one more week to go for radiotherapy). I did chemotherapy here in Dubai at welcare hospital. I have an insurance coverage but I know that the whole 8 sessions of chemo (4 AC + 4 Taxol) is approximately 110.000 AED, in addition radiotherapy will cost 80.000 AED in GICC whereas the American hospital will charge 120.000 AED for the same treatment. You can find nice natural hair wigs in Karkafi. Chemo sucks but you need to stay positive in order to minimize the side effects. I lost my hair, my eyebrows and my eyelashes but they are back now especially my eyebrows and eyelashes. My hair is back but still short. My advice is to stay focused and positive. YOUR FRAME OF MIND WILL FRAME YOUR WORLD. edited by happy mum on 01/12/2013 Hello happy mum. I am truly inspired with your bravery and thank you for sharing. I am in a cancer scare at the moment. Dont worry too much about having a cystoscopy, whilst unpleasant and embarrassing it might find the answer to your problem. My DD went through this due to suffering years of UTI's and it turned out she had a very short urethra. The solution was to stretch the urethra, which was extremely painful afterwards as she wasn't allowed home until she "performed" but it was all worth it in the end and she has been UTI free for the past 18 months. Can't help with doctor recommendations as this was done in UK. Hope you feel better soon.
