Possibly because you have never mentioned helping/travelling to this orphanage before. Possibly if you gave more details and possible links it could have all been checked out and support would have been given.

may be different if you are getting stuck into the unlimited booze package for AED 160! Errr no..... Chance would be a fine thing! Unlimited alcohol 5.30 till 8.00 p.m. Suddenly changed at the entrance to 6 p.m. till 8 p.m. and only beer, wine and cider. :\: edited by dally on 07/12/2012

Had a lovely meal here http://grandjumeirah.habtoorhotels.com/site/general/Shahjahan.aspx. Shahjahan in the grounds of The Habtoor Grand, Dubai Marina e other night, great food, lovely staff, you can see into the kitchen and really enjoyed watching the preparation taken in producing our meal. The only problem it was almost empty of customers (don't know why) which had an effect on the ambience of the place, but can't fault the food.

If you have your own car, you could drive there and book safe driver or RTA taxi driver to bring you and pooch home in your own car, slightly dearer must might be the only option.

As we left last night my husband said he couldn't remember a year with less of a police presence! I think you will find that the Police had more pressing issues to deal with, the exceptional weather conditions caused major road flooding problems which became a higher priority. As regards the stealing, yes it's a shame, but really people should take more care of their property, we have all become too complacent here thinking there is little or no crime of this nature, when in reality it can happen anywhere. Don't leave bags etc unattended and you won't get them stolen by opportunist thieves.

Absolute bl**dy nightmare! It took DH 45 mins to get from SZR exit, down to the Westin and then left by The Torch to get home last night, the roads were gridlocked! Think it's to do with the Marina Tram project. It was bad enough a few weeks ago when they stopped you doing a u turn by Le Reve/The Torch and was forced to use the junction at the Westin, but this is beyond a joke!

I have attended two weddings here, one was conducted at the couple's home in AD by a Christian preacher and another at the Montgomerie Golf Course Address Hotel by the same preacher, he does the Christian service and then completes all the formalities\legalities for you. I don't know his name but if you contact Emma (wedding coordinator) at The Address Montgomerie, she might have his details. But that would mean your future DH would have to agree to a Christian service, but ut is doable here. I believe that's only a blessing? I'm about to be married myself and the church (and embassy) told us that the legal part can only take place in a physical church (either Jebel Ali or Oud Metha.) A 'blessing' could then be performed by the same Reverend, but it is only that - a blessing. The religious part preceeds it in a church. (referring to Dubai only, not AD) You may have a point, but we were certainly under the impression that this was classed as a legal marriage as he did say he was taking all the paperwork to get things legalised and the newly married couple did not have to do anything else. But as with everything here it's as clear as mud. :\:

I'm watching the coverage of the Ryder Cup on OSN and they keep showing an Emirates advertisement in the breaks featuring a very attractive women on the A380. Puts on lippy in the loo, swans through to the bar,has a drink with a good looking guy, camera cuts to 2 chaps playing backgammon and a couple of other people wearing headphones doing some DJ stuff or something, then said attractive woman goes back to her seat and fires an olive at some velocity into her mouth. I'm thinking, hope the cabin crew know the Heimelich maneouvre!! (spelling???) Anyway, Hello Tomorrow and all that but I think this ad is really bizarre and a bit provocative or is it just me??? edited by cushion on 28/09/2012 thats just their ad... advertising the space of the a380 presumably, shame they are not all like that... of course you wouldnt get that sorts of ad on ad sports or thelike. Plus I think this is the first advert I have seen on UAE TV actually showing alcohol. :\:

Have you had them somewhere where they have needed to be photocopied/scanned? They are often left on the photocopier glass and only discovered when the machine is used again, can't guarantee that the staff have the nounce to contact you, they may be waiting for you to contact them. This happened to friends of mine in the serviced apartments where they live when copies were taken for their records. Took weeks for them to realise they were missing and had to really think back to the last time they had needed them.

DH's company used to loan you full housing allowance for the first year and take it back monthly from allowance in wages, but you were on your own the second and subsequent years and expected to save out of your earnings to cover the following years rent. When we arrived they had stopped doing this as it sometimes back fired on them, especially if staff were released before the year was up also backfired on the employees but they weren't worried about that! So we were on our own and ended up renting monthly (obviously at a premium cost) as we could not afford a full year's rent or even six month's and were reluctant to obtain a bank loan etc to cover rent.

I went for dinner at the Walk yesterday evening. I parked in the underground parking garage. I was early and walked around for a little bit. In the end we went for dinner at Reem Al Bawadi. It was lovely. I spent four hours there and had my parking ticket validated. I expected to have to pay for two hours as this was what it said on the signs. I was very surprised to then be told that Reel Al Bawadi was not part of 'this parking' and therefore I had to pay for four hours. I did complain, but as there were cars behind me I felt I had no choice but to pay and drive off. As they charge 20AED an hour!!!!, this was a costly evening. I do not mind paying for parking, but this is excessive. I was informed that there is a sign at the entrance of the parking stating which restaurants fall under their parking validation. Needless to say I will not return. It is a real shame as the Walk is a great idea, but without reasonable parking I would rather go elsewhere. I am surprised that they stamped/validated your ticket if they are not part of the scheme. We were once at Dome and when I asked them to stamp the ticket they told me they weren't in that scheme as it is only the restaurants in the Emaar buildings that are included, so I just popped into Spinneys and bought an etisalat voucher for my phone and then got the free parking.

Not just in Dubai, I would say it's region wide. It was once explained to me "that time here is very elastic" what I hate it when you are waiting for someone and you phone and they say "just 5 mins away" and clearly they are not as you are still sitting there 25 mins later. Even when you phone back and they say they are coming through the gates now and they clearly aren't as you are waiting at the gates for them. I just wish they would be honest and say they are running late or have just left etc. but I think some people just hate to recognise the fact that they are late and don't want to let you down so it's always "5 mins away, 5 mins away" :\:

Don't know if it's possible but can you actually book and pay for 4 seats for 3 passengers? This would be cheaper than business class and it would mean you could raise the arm rests and the children could cuddle up to you if you had a full row of 4 to yourselves.

LOL perhaps expats might if they werent already paying through the roof for water Some expats utility bills along with rents are paid direct by their employer, therefore this generous and sometime life saving gesture would be borne by the company that employed them and not themselves. Just wanted to put a different spin on the situation as the neighbour being the culprit is far from confirmed.

Is the OP certain it was a neighbour and not some poor labourer or other unfortunate down on their luck? Perhaps they were expecting the same welcome traditionally provided by local families see link http://gulfnews.com/mobile/news/gulf/uae/society/water-of-life-1.863095 some expats might like to adopt the same generous provision to those less fortunate than themselves. edited by dally on 05/09/2012

I am another one, who doesn't go to the mall or cinema on Fridays, except very early in the morning before it gets busy. Regarding the perceived queue jumping, not holding doors open, not thanking or acknowledging holding doors open etc. I have come to realise that it is only rude to certain nationalities and an unknown concept to others. Please don't jump down my throat for being racist, I am not but this is borne from observations here and abroad. With some it generally is the "survival of the fittest" and "everyone for themselves" concept and giving way, taking turns etc will be alien to them. I recently observed this at my DH's head office, where a company bus had dropped off admin workers who then entered the reception area I was sitting and walked through to the inner office, not one looked back or held the door to prevent it banging into the person behind. No one seemed annoyed at what I would have considered rudeness, it was just the way things are. I recall the tragic incident a few years ago in another country (dont want to actually name it as I am sure I will be jumped on) where people including children were trampled to death after a train station announced a train was coming into a different platform to the expected one and there was a mass stampede to the new platform. Obviously this is the extreme and a very tragic example but I think it makes me more aware of the thinking of some nationalities. I have just been back to the UK and yes it is great to be "flashed" to give me right of way rather than in annoyance "to get out of the way", lovely to have car drivers raise a hand in thanks for letting them have right of way. But it wasn't lovely to pay £70+ to fill up the tank so we can't have everything!

So sorry to hear this, if you are who I think you are, be strong, don't make any rash decisions, take time to evaluate your options. What do you want to do? You have worked before and I am sure you will be able to get a job if that is what you really want the problem is getting one that pays enough for you to support yourself and their willingness to sponsor you. If you and DH can keep talking and come to some compromise and stay in the villa together until you decide what you want to do all the better. But I am sure that you know that if things turn really nasty and he wants you out, all he has to do is cancel your visa and change the locks. I don't think you really have much grounds for support here in the UAE. If you aren't who I think you are, apologises, but be strong and look after yourself.

Serbia recently dropped a football player from the national team for his refusal to sing their national anthem. More countries should take their lead, if you are not willing to sing your country's national anthem you are not fit to wear their shirt. Representing your country is an honour and the priviledge should not be squandered on ungrateful superstars who should know better. They are supposed to role models to the younger generations, what message do these silent abstainers give to our athletes and sporting stars of the future?

My current company does the same. It;s either passport or labour card. I don't see that's much of an issue so long as they give it to you when you ask for it. Every company I've ever worked for here has had the same edited by Chocs01 on 23/07/2012 Well I can see something wrong with it! If there is an emergency like at a weekend or during the night and you don't have immediate access to your passport it can be very distressing. We got a phone call at 3 a.m. to say MIL was very ill, I had DH booked onto a flight at 7.30 a.m. but he still arrived too late to say his goodbye to her. Distressing enough, can you imagine how bad he would have felt if he couldn't have gotten on the first available flight. edited by dally on 23/07/2012

The employer might want visa in place before their employees arrive in the country as visas are cheaper if they are out of the country and collect correct visa at airport on arrival. It might be worth checking which medical insurance company you are being provided with covers pregnancy, not all policies do.

Is there not management rules regarding the opening times of the pool. Ours closes at 9.30. If there is, then complain to the management company and keep complaining until they enforce their own rules. If there is not such rules then I am sorry to say you will just have to put up with it. To get your own back, throw your family out at 5.30 in the morning into the pool, let them shout, scream, play loud music and see how the other family like it when the shoe is on the other foot!

MissF, not to take away from your day, which sounded pretty bad, but ... I had to drop DS1 off to a party in MOE. I was planning to bring DD, but she pitched a huge fit about which car seat she would sit in, so I left her home with DM (Dear Maid) and at the last moment, brought DS2 who had just woken up from his nap. When we get to the party, late, hot, tired and frazzled from fighting with DS1 in the car, I smell something horrible. Turns out DS2 is seriously poopy, but I've not brought my nappy bag with me. As I felt my shirt getting wetter and wetter, I decided to stop at the nearest change room even though I didn't have a nappy or wipes with me. I go into the baby changing room, strip DS1 down and the situation is really bad. He has poop from his waist to his knees. And the water in the sink isn't working. So I break a major taboo and carry him out into the hallway to the ladies room, where I try three sinks before one has water. I clean him as well as possible. I was planning to put his shorts on without a nappy, but it turns out his shorts are filthy, so I throw them out. Then, I walked across the entire MOE with a naked on the bottom toddler to Carrefour to buy some nappies. Carrefour is horrible on a good day ... so I got my nappies and got in line - I picked the Najd line since it was the only one with less than 10 people. But still, those two people were taking forever, and I'd already been holding my naked son - who clearly had an upset tummy - for going on fifteen minutes. So I did what I never thought I would ever see myself doing. I opened the nappies, plunked one down ON THE CONVEYOR BELT - and put a nappy on my son. When it was finally our turn, the nappies cost 48.75 - and when the lady only gave me 51 dh back, I mustered all the dignity I had left, and insisted on my 25 fils. What a day. I am so sorry you have had such a sh**y day but you have made me laugh..... It makes me so glad to be well past the baby, toddler stage. Seriously where else in the world would you accept not getting the correct change regardless of the amount, I have now conditioned myself to pay for every with my credit card at least I then know I haven't been short changed. I feel so sorry for the parents of small children here, we might all be living the dream of life in la la land but without the back up of family (even if you have a maid) life can have stresses that I have been priveledged not to have endured. The value of family back up and support has been underestimated and not appreciated to the full. I thank god for the love and support I had from family i had when bringing up my DD's.
