Well said Cheeky Monkey. Berberis, if you feel bad treat her with respect and pay her a decent tip if she does a good job. I don't feel sorry for my maid. I empathise with her being away from her family (as I was at her age) and respect her for working hard and supporting her entire family on the salary she earns.

It's rather odd there is no info on their website. I did find a Time Out review though. http://www.timeoutdubai.com/restaurants/features/66616-gary-rhodes-unveils-theatre-at-vox

I haven't been but you book it through the Vox website (or, I assume, in person). I'd like to go but there is a total lack of information about it on their website. Every other 'experience' has page telling you about it but not Theatre by Rhodes. No info, no menu, nothing.

You can post it from a post office. Here is a list of them: http://www.dubaifaqs.com/post-offices-dubai.php The cost will depend on the size/weight of the package and the type of service used. Posting to NZ I've found takes anything from 1 week to 3 weeks, Australia is probably similar, maybe a bit less.

For those that have the view that correct procedures should be followed, it's really not that simple. It is easy to talk about doing things the 'right way' when you actually have the means to do so. http://news.sky.com/story/1546481/dead-boys-aunt-tells-of-asylum-claim-despair If you don't have those means, what do you do? Sit and wait to for your situation to deteriorate even further so you have absolutely no means of escape, or take a chance to get out while you still can? Would you stay to watch your children face hardship, hunger and violence? Accept your lot simply because of where you were born? Or would you do anything for a better life for your children? JK Rowling, once again, has said it beautifully. "If you can't imagine yourself in one of those boats, you have something missing. "They are dying for a life worth living,"

In fairness to the OP..............and her "gardener". both are handicapped by their mutual delusion that gardeners exist in Dubai. With a very, very few exceptions, these chaps are general labourers, ok for sweeping, hosing and clearing up leaves. The only successful way to garden in Dubai is to read up on it and either give very firm but simple instructions or do it oneself. My gardener is brilliant, I've been using him for years. He knows his stuff about plants and growing them in this climate, I was so pleased to find him!

For the first time ever my outdoor potted Christmas tree has survived the summer, hurrah! It normally gives up the ghost around late June. I was here most of the summer, didn't think it was too bad compared to previous years. ETA Sorry MMM, that's not very helpful for your question! Definitely shade, the more shade my plants are in during summer the better they last. All day direct sun frazzles them to pieces.

Could someone please enlighten me ? Some people are lucky enough to have their hubby's companies here pay for their employees children to attend school here which is a great thing given the cost of them. But why when someone who has the same job, same job title, same salary and working for the same company and who doesn't have any small children attending school do they not have perks to make up this difference? Surely that brings the other employees salary/perks way above the other employees? Does this mean their work is less important? Honey, If all other things being equal except that you have no children and your coworker has children and gets school fees, you are much better off, financially. Children cost a fortune. Having children is like having a hoover attached to my purse. I took out a thousand AED from the ATM the other day and I'm already down to under 100. Why? Because of the kids. My god, if I didn't have kids I'd be all over the Fashion Avenue shops at Dubai Mall! When we first came here expat children were not allowed to attend local schools, so they had to go to international schools. The law has since been changed so they can, in theory, attend local schools, but it's an impractical option for those from the US or the UK or elsewhere, as local schools are strictly in Arabic. School fees are meant to ensure that your child is being educated in a decent school somewhat comparable to a decent school in your home country. It's not really a "benefit" as you term it, but an essential aspect of any family's decision to come to the UAE. The school fees goes straight from DH's company to the school. It never comes through our bank accounts. If we didn't get school fees or a corresponding bump in our package, we would seriously re-evaluate staying in the UAE. If DH left, it would cost his company a great deal to replace him. I just added up the cost of my children's activities for this term. Feeling a bit faint.

I agree with syd123. Mrs_cobb, in a couple of years you may well find yourself sitting enjoying a coffee and a chat while your exuberant 4 year old runs off some energy. When my first child was a toddler I used to tut to myself about unruly older children and their irresponsible parents. I'm now one of them  The exception to this would be in a soft play area with a separate toddler area. If there were older children running wild in the toddler area I wouldn't hesitate to ask staff to deal with it.

We arrived here at the start of 2007 with no job and without knowing anyone. My husband had been applying for jobs from our home country and had done telephone interviews but at the time the economy was booming, jobs were being filled quickly and he kept on being told that he needed to be here. So we came, rented an apartment in the Greens that we found online, took taxis for the first couple of days then hired a car. Six weeks later with a job sorted and visa in place we got a long term rental house and bought cars. Things have changed a lot with the job market and it seems to be a lot harder to get a job now so the whole process may well take longer. Your friend needs to know that when you arrive it is initially very expensive and if they are coming here without a job and family/friends to stay with that is going to cost a lot more than they probably imagine. If they don't have a decent amount of savings to get them through then they need to have a return air ticket to their home country or the money for one put aside so at least they can leave if things don't work out. Good luck to your friend, we took the chance to do something different and it's all worked out well.

Hi Zoey Jane Congratulations! As its come up, I thought I'd mention that you absolutely don't need a blood test to confirm your pregnancy. False positives are extremely rare in home pregnancy tests so that is all the confirmation you need. Unless you have complications a blood test is totally unnecessary (but chargeable and therefore popular with doctors....). Correct, however a home test will not tell how approximately how far gone you are I found this quite handy. http://www.convertalot.com/pregnancy_calculator.html

I knew an English woman here working as an au pair/governess/nanny whatever you want to call it. She was qualified and was recruited through a London agency and paid a typical London salary with with flights etc provided. She did school runs, homework and cooked for the children but not cleaning. The family also employed a maid who did all the cleaning. I have no idea what sort of visa she was hired on.

DS is 11 years old and he started fasting full fast at age 9. earlier to that he used to fast half day and then fast one day and skip the other. all of his Muslim friends fast for full day. he stays awake till 3 have suhoor and then off to fajer prayer by 4:10am and then off to bed don't force her , and take her gradually, we still reward DS for fasting full day , reading quran , praying on time etc .. Hi blueunicorn I've been wondering what children do when Ramadan falls during term time? During the holidays it's feasible for them to stay up all night then sleep during the day but even with the reduced Ramadan school hours that wouldn't be possible during term time. How will you structure your sons day/night when he needs to be at school? I hope you don't mind me asking, I'm just curious as I've just been thinking about it with Ramadan coming in to term time now :)

I can understand why you would automatically think like that, because I agree there is nothing worse than a screaming baby!-this was not the case with my baby! And I would not have my child in a salon for hours on end! I choose to bring up my own child and don't have a nanny, so to go for the odd blow dry is something I've always done! If they would have made the rules clear from the start i'd have been more than happy to have given my money to another business! Also the walls should be sound proof in the first place, because what about the hair dryer?? Nobody wants to hear that whilst having a facial next door!!! I just wanted to warn other hands on mums, not to waste their time or money! Going for the odd blowdry may be something you've always done but having a baby often means you have to give things up, temporarily at least. Having a service done at home while your child is small is barely a hardship. You may even find when you are able to get to a salon on your own in future that you relish the break and appreciate a child free policy.

I got her up this morning, it's not that. She did not like her father lecturing her and staring at her, she couldn't even eat half of what I gave her. I wasn't expecting that so I'm not going to put her through it anymore. I'll offer to have her do it until 3 pm but thats about all I can do. That's awful. All you can really do is find little ways of helping your children cope and building up their confidence and resilience despite the best efforts of your husband to do the opposite.

I'm another horrible one. I go to a salon to relax and have a break from my children, I really don't want to hear someone else's child crying or making a racket when I am there. There are plenty of at home salon services you can use if you have a baby. I either used them or went to the salon in the evening or weekend when my husband could be at home with our baby.

Waking her early isn't going to work at all, she's too frightened, so hopefully 5-6 waking hours will be enough. Hi Cherpie What do you mean by she's too frightened to be woken early? I'm not Muslim and know nothing about fasting but if sleeping during the day isn't an option due to how your household runs then maybe you need to start getting her used to the idea now of waking for Suhoor so when she is required to do full fasts she is better able to cope.

I guess, I would have to add a car then.. I have looked at the different areas, I love Arabian Ranches the most. But its looked like getting out and about in the first couple of months might be a bit tough, when we don't have a car. I would check motor city though, still trying to get used to the idea of living in an apartment. The only advantage I considered for JLT is access to the metro, that way we don't have to drive to work all the time. I guess I needs tips on the easiest way to settle in within the first year, before I find a rhythm that suits my family and I. I live in Arabian Ranches and love it, I lasted two days here without a car though. Motor City isn't all apartments, there are also townhouses and stand alone villas in the Green Community Motor City. There may also be townhouses in the development behind the big Spinneys but I'm not certain. Will your children be going to Gems Metropole? If so there are some houses close enough that they could walk to school, even in the hotter months.

The prospect of going to jail for being unable to pay debts is incentive in itself for skipping the country. If someone can continue to work and pay off their debts, with a travel ban in place, their creditors have more chance of receiving the money owed to them.

I'm pretty certain that any GP can do this test. About 5 years or so ago I was told by several doctors "don't waste your time as it won't tell you anything, it's too vague". Things have changed and we are now seeing a change in attitude with food/gut issues being at the root of many health issues. Whilst there is growing awareness about food/gut issues being at the root of health problems, you aren't going to get any definitive answers from a one size fits all type blood test. Proper food allergy or intolerance testing is done over a period of time and involves elimination etc. A simple blood test won't give answers as there are too many variables. I spoke to a very respected Immunologist last year about food intolerances and his advice was to use common sense and listen to what your body is telling you. If something makes you feel bad, reduce how much you have it.

Def working on the side. Has likely also been offered "her own visa" or has friends doing this and has seen how she can rake it in having multiple jobs. The OP has said she's home at night so are you thinking evening webcam action or (the rather more boring) morning part time cleaning elsewhere? Mat29, have you checked she is definitely at your home working in the morning?

No she is live-in and doesn't go out in the evenings usually (only for an hour if she does). So she is definitely not doing night work. She does always seem to be angling for more money (from me). Does she have any health problems that might be making her so tired? Could she be spending all night online? It doesn't seem normal to need a two hour nap during the day unless she is up all night for some reason.

Smoking during pregnancy is horrible but so is constantly using an iPad as a babysitter or feeding children piles of junk food yet plenty of people do that. All are to the detriment of a child's health. Only you know if it's a deal breaker for your friendship.

You are not being unreasonable at all. You should leave a salon feeling good, not stressed. Even if it had been your error (which in your case it totally wasn't) if the stylist is able to accommodate you they should suck it up and be professional, not spend the time moaning. I hope they give you a free haircut with a good stylist :)

True, but do you not think some people come on here to get a better idea of life out here. Yes there are lots of rules and regulations we should all follow living out here, and no doubt most of us do. But to the outside world Dubai is advertised as a fabulous all year round holiday destination and from some of the adverts I've seen, it appears that anything goes. And yes the odd bizarre posts are better than nothing. I can't remember a time when I could log off in the evening and when I come back in the morning all I need to do is click on recent posts to catch up  I do think people come on here to get a better idea of life out here, I know I did before coming. If everyone on here was warm, cuddly and welcoming it would be quite a shock arriving and discovering what it's really like
