This thread is odd. The OP asks about one of fundamental rules of being here, Lolacat (quite reasonably) suggests she reads up on the rules of being here and the OP tells her not to be cheeky, she's read the rules. Mind you, the way things are on here lately bizarre posts are better than no posts at all....

Exercising is about so much more than losing weight, the physical and mental benefits are huge. The OP was asking about how to fit exercise in so she obviously wants to lose weight in a healthy sustainable way rather than resorting to appetite suppressants. Scardeycat3, I was really struggling to fit effective exercise in around always having a child (or four) in tow. I was exercising - walking with a buggy early in the mornings and static biking once my children were in bed - which was great but I really wanted to build a bit more muscle and reignite my enthusiasm for exercising again. I found the only thing that really worked for me was to have a personal trainer come to my home at time that suited me and that was happy to have my children around. She was amazing and I'm thrilled with the results. I'm now at a point where I can exercise much more effectively on my own and I can see her for refresher sessions if I feel like I need it. It is an expensive option but doesn't need to be long term and you can really target exactly what you need.

Still not great - is no one else concerned to be living in even one of the top ten most polluted countries in the world? I'd always assumed that - aside from sandstorms - the UAE air was relatively good. But I guess it does explain why my children have all had pneumonia at least once! It concerns me although obviously not enough to make me leave! My children's pediatrician told me a few years back that the air quality here is not good and it's one of the reasons why children get sick so often here.

Don't rush in to it because you feel like you have no other option. In your situation I would hire a full time maid through an agency on a month by month basis while I took the time to find someone who I was totally happy to sponsor.

Truly awful, thoughts with all those in Kuwait, Tunisia and France. Praying, enjoying time with their loved ones, working, then just gone. Dollybird, I hope your family are ok and are home safely soon.

I'm sorry gryffindornerd6 but unless you are talking about a baby of under three months old (which the OP is not) then your first statement is complete rubbish. Your opinion is invalid. I wasn't talking to you anyway. Please speak to a Pediatrician about fever guidelines in children. If you are still working as a nurse and have anything to do with children it's actually quite worrying that you believe parents should never let a fever reach beyond 38.

Lots of people heading off this weekend. If anyone is travelling to Paris or Marseilles, trains are being advised from the airports. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-33267581

You don't actually need to reduce it - treat the associated pain and discomfort, obviously, but the fever is the body's way of killing the bugs, unless you have a child particularly susceptible to febrile convulsions, it won't hurt them to be at 39 for a bit. Exactly, the fever has a job to do, let it do it. I only ever give my children drugs for a fever if they are miserable. If they are just a bit lethargic and irritable I just let it run it's course.

It's not so much the cars, it's all the huge wagons and cement mixers that I'm fed up with and I don't think they'll be leaving this weekend :( Is that on Al Khail? That road scares me to death It's every road I drive on apart from SZR. Now we've moved I'm using the 311, 66 and occasionally the Al Khail. The 311 scares me much more than the Al Khail ever did. In the summer months dodging the burst truck tyres strewn all over the 311 is like cross country skiing.

First of all, every animal you eat could be considered tortured - have you seen how our animals are treated before they are killed? They're not frolicking in the meadows, that's for sure. And second, food is food, right? And while it might not be to your taste, I think it's wrong to criticize someone else's culinary habits. Particularly since I live in a culture that bans eating ***, while I happen to love a bit of bacon in the morning. People living in glass houses and all ... the festival probably serves an important purpose in reducing the number of stray dogs and cats in the community while feeding people who might not get enough to eat normally. Have you actually read the article sheikhandbake? It would be naive to think that even ethically raised and killed animals don't experience fear in their final moments but to create unnecessary fear and suffering is wrong. For the most part (although there are some exceptions), I couldn't care less what other people eat but there are a lot of horrible practices related to animals and how this festival is carried out is one of them. Nothing wrong with eating dog if that is your thing but don't torture it first.

I would be furious. The fact that she is doing it in English knowing full well that your children might read it shows that she at best has zero respect for you and at worst has utter contempt for you. Yes, we all complain about our jobs and bosses from time to time but it should never be in a context that their children are privy to it. We all have different limits but I couldn't have her working for me after doing this. She could easily have written it in her own language to let off steam and you would be none the wiser but writing it in English seems like she wants you to see it and is mocking you. So yes, I would confront her and unless she was able to put a [i'>very[/i'> convincing case for me not firing her I would do so. For the amount you are paying her you could have a full time agency maid with the agency being responsible for the visa etc which makes it easier if you don't know how much longer you will be here. ETA: I'd take screenshots of her comments and save them in case she tried to deny it. I'd also make sure my children unfriended her.

I was just complaining about this to my husband the other day! How when you let a car get in front of you, they don't acknowledge with any kind of hand gesture that you did them a favor. Someone flashed their hazards at me the other day as a thank you, haven't had that happen for years, it was lovely. I tend to avoid any hand gestures when driving here in case it is misinterpreted....

I find it makes it easier to have all the essentials for the flight in a bag that fits under the seat and keep it there (or get it down once you are in the air if you are in a bassinet seat) . It's a pain when you are travelling alone with a baby to have to keep getting things out of the overhead locker whilst juggling your baby. Also, take a change of clothes for yourself. One of my friends had her baby vomit all over her at the start of a 14 hour flight. She said she reeked of milky vomit the whole way :\:

I just feel like it's going to rain. Did I hear the word "thunderstorm" on the end of the news but I think it said Saturday? <hopeful> I feel like it's going to rain too. Although it's entirely possible that my pre thunderstorm type headache is due to over enthusiastic dancing yesterday afternoon.

Hey Daza, Thanks for the lovely advice. What about using the spa facilities like sauna and hydrotherapy pool? I dont wear a bikini can I wear something else? Wear whatever you would normally wear in the pool, I've seen women in the full range of things from bikinis to burkinis, shorts and t-shirts, leggings and long tops. In the sauna you could just keep your robe on if you are comfortable in that.

Wear anything you want, you will be given a robe to wear while you are there. Depending on the treatment they will also give you disposable underwear to wear or you can keep your own on if you prefer. I leave jewellery at home when I go to a spa, it saves worrying about losing it. I always have a mint before a treatment so I don't breathe coffee/lunch all over the therapist. After advice on here it's also a good idea to have mints to offer one the the therapist if they need it :) Hope you have a lovely relaxing time.

There is a ski wear shop in Mall of the Emirates by Ski Dubai. I'd go with layering up long sleeve tops, jumpers etc however much you need with warm ski type jackets/trousers over the top when you are in Queenstown. It might be worth checking if you can hire snow boots for the snow park. There is a big temperature difference from Auckland to Queenstown, Auckland never gets freezing, Queenstown does.

Am so bored of people moaning how hot it is! We live in the desert- what did they expect? Penguins and snow? People moan about the summer heat and sandstorms here, in my home country they moan about the winter cold and rain. I like talking about the weather  You've got to admit, it [i'>is[/i'> hot. The last couple of days at school pick up I've had to haul my two year old out our lovely airconned car in to the scorching carpark whilst he tries to hang on to his seat with all his might bellowing "It's too hot" on repeat. Roll on hols!

Just wanted to barge in here on this thread and say - it's cultural, ladies :) Helpers working here spend their whole year cleaning up after us so that they can go home and make their families happy with some silly gifts. Remember their world/horizon is different than yours - hence the fact that they work for you! I wonder what maids go home and say about their employers. For me it would probably be "She spend 100 dirhams on two organic chicken breasts, you could buy 10 chickens for that, insane!"

Thanks for all your responses ladies - I tried the transition from sleeping bag to duvet whilst still in cot last night - disaster - every time we went in he was uncovered and cold ! He's woken up saying no blanket only sleeping bag! Think I need to find him either a onesie or those duvet grips - anyone have any idea where I can find either in dubai ? My children have all refused blankets of any kind when still in their cot but have happily had a duvet as soon as they moved to a bed. I have no idea why, I gave up trying to understand small children long ago ;) With the warm temperature this time of year could you put the air con on not so cool so your son will feel comfortable just in his normal pyjamas if he kicks the duvet/blanket off?

There is a soft play in the area Magrudy's used to be in. It's a fairly standard mall one surrounded by loud games etc. The IKEA one has a minimum height, none of my children have been tall enough to go aged 3, they are all around average height.

I can tell you what I'm absolutely bored with - bored of getting angry with level of service deliveries - this is across all types of nationalities, background, education level, job ranks. Not being biased anywhere. Sometimes feel that there are groups of people who earn their salaries in Dubai but treat it as a holiday somehow. Would not expect certain type of service level if they were back in their own home country. So exhausting. Sigh...Go on, I'm sure you have your stories. Misery loves company. Haha... I'm bored of people turning up on my doorstep and wanting to know my details despite being unable to show me any ID. No, I'm not telling you my name and phone number unless you can prove who you are. A high -vis vest is not ID, go away. I agree with day to day life being boring sometimes but all in all I find life quite thrilling. It's the little things. Game of Thrones tonight, squeeeeeeeeee!

Would help to know where you live! Unless you are on a direct bus route surely a cab would be the best option? The airport isn't a huge distance from Dubai. I've never cabbed it but it's not as far from Mirdif to Sharjah Airport as it is from Arabian Ranches to Dubai Airport which costs around 70 dirhams in a standard cab.
