Are you aware of Qatar requirements to set up such a business? You might want to ask about those as well. All i know is that for any kind of "legal" business entity in Qatar..you first need a trade license from the Qatari government. Actually, first you need a Qatari business partner who will own the majority of the business.

I've lived here since August 2009 and am under my husband's sponsorship. Women under their husband's sponsorship do not need an exit visa.

Also... they only offer "shared accommodation" rather than private accommodation. In the end, even if a school chooses to try and hire an unqualified applicant for a job, in the process of obtaining residency for that individual it could be denied based on the direction Qatar is trying to move in the field of Education.

Just tried replying to this, but lost my internet connection so now I will give a much shorter reply. While many schools have tightened up their standards for teachers and do require a Bachelor of Education and holding teaching certification in their own country (i.e., in Canada it is by province: BC certification, Alberta certification, member of the Ontario College of Teachers), there may still be some schools that are hiring unqualified teachers. I googled the website of the school mentioned, and would guess by the salaries they are offering that they are likely only getting unqualified teachers to apply as they are quite low. (Less than 1/4 of what I have ever earned for a monthly salary as a teacher here in Qatar even as a local hire under the sponsorship of my husband.) You can always apply, but I also recommend proceeding with caution. :) Kind regards.

We are going on our seventh year here, and I drive here. For me the main thing is to know where I am going so that I can anticipate where I am going to need and can focus on driving rather than being distracted by trying to figure out where I am going. If I was from the UK maybe I would find it a little more challenging because I would also have to adjust to driving on the other side of the road... As a nurse, you might find it a challenge to find employment here that is going to pay you the wage you would like as it seems to me that most nursing positions seem to be filled by people from the Philippines, India, and Sri Lanka. As for the wage someone earns as a local hire, it is true that there may be benefits that you are not eligible for. However, there are still some that will still provide you with annual trip home, transportation allowance, and housing allowance along with a fair salary. Good luck! I remember the excitement leading up to our relocation here. :)

I would caution people about dismissing the experiences of some people just because you think they are being too positive. We all have our own experiences here in Qatar. Some of us have had experiences which are very positive, and some people have experiences that are negative. The same occurs in any city in the world at any time. I have been here for 7 years, and I love living here. The only negative experience I have had would be dealing with Karwa taxis. That isn't to say that there aren't bumps in the road, but I recognize that the bumps along the way and those days when I want to pull my hair out also are the same things that would make me want to pull my hair out back in Canada. I would also suggest that negativity breeds negativity. I know of some people who are miserable, and they hang out with people who are also miserable, and while they are together all they do is gripe and complain. It's almost like they are engaged in a secret contest of "who can have the worst day/experience."

I don't know anything about the two particular schools that you have mentioned. However, if you are having difficulty finding a school for the placement of your child in Reception then you may want to consider expanding your search to stand alone Kindergartens that are registered with the SEC and offer the reception program. One of these in particular that offers a solid program and has numerous resources available to teachers to support learning is Kid'n Around Kindergarten. http://www.kidnaroundkg.com It operates out of a purpose-built villa and follows the EYFS curriculum. They do not however provide transportation, but it may be worth your time to look into it. Kind regards, ~ Deb

Bring books with you.... There are some online sources though for having a small selection of stories "read" to your child. As for other educational resources, there are so many online sources that you can get free items from and print out that you don't really need to bring that type of stuff with you.

Hi everyone, does anyone know what the rules and processes are for getting a work card while staying under your husband's sponsorship? I know it costs like 200qr and I have to fill something out? Tried google and couldn't seem to come up with anything. Also, does this go for ALL jobs? The position I am looking at is actually with a company based in the UAE and they are expanding into Qatar. Would this apply? TIA! The employer applies for the labour card on behalf of the employee. It requires a lot of paper work from your home country (diplomas, police clearances) that must be certified and attested in your home country, and the Qatar embassy in your home country.

Likes: 1) The wonderful people I have met. 2) My job. 3) No snow in the winter. 4) More time with my husband. 5) Having more vacation time that matches up with my husband. 6) The ability to travel to many places we would never have seen had we not come here. 7) Short working hours at my job. 8) That pretty much everything can be delivered -- including some of the small grocery shops that do delivery. 9) Shorter wait times for certain medical treatments, seeing specialists, getting an MRI, etc. 10) Being able to afford to have someone come and clean my villa once a week. Dislikes: 1) The negative Nancy's who spend all their time moaning about well... everything. 2) That sometimes the quality of the fruits and vegetables is not very good. 3) Cockroaches. Fortunately I have seen very few inside our villa over the past 5 years, but I don't like them just the same. 4) Lack of selection of novels -- but this is overcome by using an ereader. edited by DebK on 28/06/2014

A labour card is mandatory, and if people are caught working without having a valid labour card then there are huge fines that they may receive. In order to get a labour card you must have a Police Clearance from your home country t as well as the highest educational degree that pertains to the field of work and they must also be properly authenticated in your home country.

Hello again, I've been researching schools and just wanted to know what anyone's thoughts on this school is. We are moving to Doha around August/September and seem to be hitting a brick wall with getting my kids enrolled in a school, my little girl will be 3 next February and my little boy will be 4 next March. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!! Many thanks. Your daughter will be too young for school in September 2014. Your son though will be the right age for Preschool in September 2014. Your daughter will still need to go to Nursery. For Preschool children must be 3 years of age by August 31st, 2014. For reception they must be 4 years of age by August 31st, 2014.

I think it's more of a personal preference thing as to which book is best. We actually ended up buying both, but I personally like the Mybook better as it includes ChiZen (which is not in the Entertainer this year) and it also includes spas. (The spas lack appeal for my hubby though.)

Hi Jessica, Schooling depends on where your child gets accepted. Yes -- they must apply, undergo testing and interviews, and then may or may not get accepted. Cost can be anywhere from about 20,000QAR per year to about 70,000 QAR per year. (That's approximately $6000 CAD to $21,000 CAD per child. So you could be looking at $18,000 to $63,000 CAD per year just for the education of your children.) This is per child. Cost also varies on the year in school that you are registering for. Some employers will pay for the complete cost of your child's education and others will only pay part of it. Also, some employers will only pay for the education of a certain number of children. For example, my husband's employer will only pay for the school fees of 2 children and will only give about 22,000 QAR per child for fees. These school fees do not include assessment fees, registration fees, transportation fees, lunch programs (that some schools have), or the cost of uniforms. So with three children I would definitely recommend that you negotiate a contract that will completely pay for the education of all three children. It can also be quite difficult to find a school that will accept your children. There are unfortunately many families that have their children in different schools. I have also known some who have not been able to find spots for their children in schools that meet their standards and therefore either have to put them in other locations until they find a spot, or they have to homeschool them. As a Canadian unless you go non-resident you still do pay taxes on the income you earn here. Sorry I can't provide percentages as we avoided the whole taxation thing by going non-resident. This however means that we also gave up the right o own property in Canada, or to have any health coverage from our province, etc... and if we eventually do repatriate to Canada we could face having to pay back taxes at that time. I certainly don't mean to discourage you from seeking employment here with the whole cost of education thing -- but I know that is one of the major concerns of people who are parents. (We don't have kids -- so it wasn't something we needed to give any thought to.) As social workers/counsellors with Masters degrees you might want to investigate some of the colleges/universities here in Qatar for positions as counsellors -- or if they have programs for teaching in that area. Regards, ~ Deb

Additionally, parents who put their child in such a playgroup need to be aware that it's not going to help their child get in to a school. Schools want to see report cards and report cards are only recognized from licensed Kindergartens or schools. I sympathize with the frustration of those who are having to move their children out of the nurseries and into kindergartens at this time of year. However, hopefully other parents will learn from the frustration and if they have a child who is three (but doesn't turn 4 before September 1st) they should be looking for a spot in a kindergarten for September so that they can avoid similar issues.

The Entertainer wasn't available at Carrefour or Virgin at Landmark when I was there on Sunday. I instead purchased a similar coupon book called "My Book Qatar" which costs about 60 QAR less than the Entertainer. A co-worker bought the Entertainer and was very disappointed with its selection of coupons this year. She took a look at my copy of "My Book Qatar" and then went out and bought herself one of those too. I think people should look at both books to see what is inside as they may find one more suitable than the other. My Book Qatar has spa coupons in it unlike the Entertainer. :)

Actually... the diploma itself isn't proof of education. To accompany it you need the official transcripts from the institute that issued the diploma to be certified. In Canada the process for it all went like this: Obtain transcript and take it along with the diploma to a lawyer who made copies and certified them as true copies. These then had to be sent to the Department of Foreign Affairs. They then added their stamps. From there they went to the Qatar Embassy in Canada. They added their stamp and then they returned all documents to me so that I could submit them. In addition to transcripts you also need to provide a Certificate of Conduct (Police Background Check) from your home country that has to go through the same process.

My family experienced something similar. My grandmother passed away and then my grandfather remarried much to the dismay of his five grown daughters. I on the other hand had a different perspective and was happy that my Grandfather had someone to keep him company so that he wouldn't be lonely. I didn't feel in any way that it meant he had forgotten about my grandmother. How could it have? He'd been married to her for more than 50 years. I would actually suggest that your god daughter sit down with her dad one-on-one to tell him how she feels, but also to listen to what he has to say. She might be surprised at what she learn. I would also try to help her understand that just because her father is in a new relationship it doesn't replace what he had with her mother. Love comes in all sorts of different forms and we never love two different people in the same way. Maybe part of the awkwardness comes from not knowing if it's okay for her to talk about her mother in front of her father's new significant other. Grief can be a difficult thing and when you feel as though you're no longer allowed to talk about shared memories out the fear of hurting someone else's feelings it can be difficult.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I know that you can go to immigration on D-ring road (believe it's the 2nd building) but it must be done during the daytime to get a new egate card. It's been so long since we got our original egate cards that I don't recall what documents we needed but obvious ones would be Qatar ID card and likely your passport. Payment has to be done by a bank card. If it is a renewal, it can be done in the evenings.

Part time work does actually exist but it may not be advertised in that manner. For example, I work at a local kindergarten and my hours are 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. As for not hearing back from any of the schools, this is kind of the wrong time of year to try and find something at the schools as they have their staff for this year, and it is too early to start the hiring process for September.

For some reason not many people replied to my questions even though they have the answers but will make sure I help you in any way I can. Maybe you didn't get replies because even though we are here we may not actually know the answers to the questions you have asked. 1) I know nothing about moving companies in Canada to send things to Qatar. When we moved we chose to come with 2 suitcases each -- that's it. We sold everything else we owned back in Canada before we left. 2) It's best to accept now that you will never get accurate answers on how long different processes may take in Qatar. What might be speedy for one person may take a LONG time for another person. Part of it depends on the company, but part of it also depends on the government. There are only so many visas for different nationalities that can be issued, and we don't know these details. See? My response doesn't provide you any answers you want and therefore is just a waste of space and time. (Hence why I didn't previously reply.) edited by DebK on 01/11/2013

I just got home from IKEA and was about to mention that they had quite a selection of Christmas things throughout the store. (I ended up spending far more than I ever intended, but in my defense I was not prepared for the Christmas items they had.) They had quite a lot out today. One thing in particular that some people may be interested in were their advent calendars. They were about 55 QAR I believe (for the small size not the giant one) and they had two designs: Christmas Tree and a SAnta. They were the kind with boxes that you fill yourself with treats and could be reused the next year.

I can't offer answers on your first two questions as neither my spouse nor I work for Hamad. There are however LOTS of Canadians in Doha as there are two post-secondary institutions here that have Canadian roots: Calgary University and the College of the North Atlantic. You can check out the Canadians in Qatar group on Facebook. I myself don't go to the Canadians in Qatar events but I know many others do. I think a lot of the making friends and fitting in is a personal experience that is different for everyone as it depends a lot on your own personality as well as being influenced by things like work and living accommodations. As all of the people employed by my husband's employer are housed in the same compounds/apartment buildings it has made it easier to meet fellow Canadians, but some of the people that I feel closest to are people I have met through work and are from other nationalities. I've also had other women strike up conversations with me in the middle of the grocery store -- so you never know where you will meet people, you just have to be open to it.

Deb that was before the rules changed to be fair! Whether the 6 month bank statement rule applies depends on your company/PRO. I know many people who have had to wait. There are also people who just arrived this August who already have RP's for their spouses, which is under the alleged new rules.

I had to sign in just to reply to this one :).. I have no clue what everyone is talking about.. I have been here for one month and myself and the kids already have our residencey ( we had it 2 weeks ago, and I also have my diriving licence).. My husband has been here for 2 months.. but applied after he got his.. so total wait is less than a month.. My kids would have been in trouble if they didnot have their residency as school now wont let them even attend without it.. I am American if that makes any difference.. It often depends more on the employer than anything else. I know that with my husband's employer people tend to get their RP for their spouses long before they have been here 6 months. In fact, if the whole bank statement thing was mandatory none of them would ever be able to bring their spouses as they don't get paid into a Qatari bank -- their pay gets deposited in to their bank accounts back in Canada. edited by DebK on 29/09/2013

Oh what a treat for you -- your first Doha Christmas where you will get to witness the interesting decorations that get sold in Lulu and Carrefour. (Everyone wants a neon pink or mustard yellow Christmas tree -- right?) Leading up to Christmas there are also some Bazaars and craft sales that take place. Those can be fun to check out to buy those special Christmas bits that aren't on offer at the stores. I believe that Royal Plaza Mall usually has a day when Santa comes to the mall. The hotels are often decorated beautifully. There are actually many Muslims that do decorate for the holiday and do celebrate it -- just with a slightly different meaning than what the Christians might. I've gone out with co-workers for a festive meal during which we wore our Santa hats and took Christmas crackers to the restaurant and we had many Qataris coming up to us and wishing us a Merry Christmas -- just the same as we would wish them Ramadan Kareem or Eid Muburak. You might just be surprised at how festive everything becomes without it feeling as though the North Pole has exploded.

I think it depends on what type of employment it is where a person looks for a job. What kind of business is it that you are opening? Are you looking to recruit people from overseas to come to Qatar? Or are you looking for people who are already in Qatar who are looking for work? Perhaps if your question provided more details then people would be able to make suggestions. Thanks for your reply. At the moment i am looking for an Admin Assistant/Secretary who can speak and write fluent Arabic and English. Part time or full time. I am in the process of opening up a new nursery so later will need qualified teachers. Are you looking to provide sponsorship for these employees? Or are you looking for employees who are under the sponsorship of their husband and you will get them labour cards? This will likely make a difference as to whether you should be posting on things like Qatar Living, in the local papers, or using recruitment agencies. In all honesty, as you are opening up a new business your Qatari business partner should be able to advise you on where you should be placing advertisements.

In all honesty I'd be tempted to try it first by mixing some up in a jar and dropping a few ants in to see if it does indeed have an affect on the ants. Otherwise I'd be afraid that the icing sugar is just going to make the problem worse! LOL One of my husband's coworkers also told him borax, sugar, and water placed in lids. There are cockroaches in Qatar? I didn't think it was the right climate for this. There are most definitely cockroaches in Qatar. Most places spray regularly for them but you will still get the odd one. What worries me more is when I find 1/2 a cockroach. I can't help but wonder what happened to the other half? Right now I'm experiencing an ant issue. For the life of me we can't figure out where these giant ants are coming from. Love: my job, many of my coworkers, the friends I have made, my students, sweet popcorn at the movies, the hardworking maintenance department at my compound who are quick to fix things and help out, the year round sunny weather (mostly), no snow in the winter, extra time with my husband, opportunities to travel to places we never would have considered while back in Canada. Hate: the occasional cockroach that we get (sorry - they creep me out), all the stray cats, and getting rain far too seldom (once a month would be nice.) :)
