Err who said anything about drinking and driving!!!! edited by IrnBru on 10/12/2011 A lot of people DO drive to these places and then get back behind the wheel and drive home after consuming some adult beverages. I'm glad to hear that those who have replied are not among those people, but with there being such severe penalties for driving after even one drink, I was just saying I don't understand why people do that anyway ... I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone by saying that it wouldn't make any difference to me. I understand that there are those who like alcohol with their meals and I'm not one of them. So sorry for sharing my own thoughts on things with you.

Won't stop us from going to the Pearl to enjoy a nice meal out ... I've never understood why people would take the risk of drinking while out for dinner and then driving home anyway.

I can hear the voice of Garth Brooks in my head singing the words, "If tomorrow never comes..." I think that as time goes on you just learn to accept that tomorrow might mean next month or it could mean never. (Kind of like when you're a kid and your parents say, "I'll think about it.") When things do move quickly, it really makes you appreciate things. I can't relate to the issue regarding finding compounds as we were told where we would be living by my husband's employer -- no choice involved, and then you just make the best of what you are given. Plus I do not have children. I often think if I hadn't found a job less than a week after arriving here in Doha I might have gone crazy. :)

I don't know about USPS delivery from the USA, BUT last Thursday evening (5:55 p.m. our time) I ordered some books through Amazon.ca. Monday morning at 10:55 a.m. they were delivered to my husband at work. Which means it took only 4 days for those books to make their way to me -- which includes having had to go through customs in the USA (according to the tracking information) and of course customs here in Doha. So... there might be hope. Especially since Amazon's orginal estimated date of delivery was January 7th. LOL ~ Deb PS they used DHL to send the books. edited by DebK on 06/12/2011

This is definitely cooler than it was the last two winters. It's not so much the actual temperature, but the fact that we've been getting quite a bit of rain and so it's very damp. We've used our portable heaters that we bought two years ago more in the last two weeks than ever before. (In fact, one of them was still in the box and I had to unpackage it and put it together. Haha!) It's also the first year I have worn mitts out and about, and I have given in for the first time in 2 1/2 years and am wearing socks and running shoes instead of sandals. :(

My excuse for being up early DanLou is that I'm unfortunately a morning person. A really early morning person it seems. My body just naturally wakes up between 4 a.m. and 4:30 every day. If I try to force myself to stay in bed then I feel far worse than if I just get up and start my day. The advantage of being a morning person is it gives me a nice slow start to morning and by the time my students arrive at 7:30 I'm completely ready to go! The disadvantage is my husband is a night owl... and on weekends when we go socializing with friends then around 9 o'clock at night I'm ready to throw in the towel.

It would be much easier to get jobs in Doha but I really like Dubai and there are some really negative comments about Doha. It makes me worried as we don't have kids so not sure if Doha has as much for us. Any thoughts? We don't have children either, and I personally LOVE Doha! Was enthusiastic about it before we came, and 2 1/2 years later I still love it. :) We are currently in the process of my husband renewing his contract so that we can stay longer. I find that there is ALWAYS something to do whether it is participating in an organized event that is happening or getting out and exploring. It is very much a personal thing though. I know lots of people who love it here, and I know others who just make-do.

DebK are you sure??? real vanilla extract not imitation vanilla essence? I've been here 2 1/2 years and never seen it. I think the mouthwash, like perfumes is allowed because you are not supposed to swallow it. Vinegar shouldn't contain alcohol. Yes, I am sure... real vanilla extract. I don't do the shopping though so can't be 100% sure where they bought it and I know sometimes they can't find it. I can ask though tomorrow. I know it is the real stuff because I pointed out the ingredients of it to them and despite its label the others argued that it did not contain alcohol. After all 90%+ of my students are Islamic so I didn't want to cross any lines of what was allowable.... (I don't do a whole lot of baking at home because then someone -- mainly me -- would end up eating it.) Vinegar is according to chemistry an alcohol. Vinegar is composed of about 5% acetic acid. This is the major chemical component of vinegar. The systematic or proper chemical name of acetic acid is ethanoic acid. Vinegar is a weak acid produced by the oxidation of alcohol (ethanol) from wines and ciders by bacteria. It is however a very weak form of alcohol, and anyone who would even contemplate drinking it (rather than just using it on things) needs their head examined in my opinion! Just like teens back in North America who will drink mouthwash for the alcohol in it. edited by DebK on 20/11/2011

lulu is good for baking ingredients in general, tavola and lakeland for the gear and megamart for anything you can't find at lulu. One thing you wlll not find anywhere is vanilla extract (or the other extracts; orange, lemon, peppermint etc) due to the alcohol content. You can either use the artificial flavours, make your own or smuggle it in. ;) Oh and I-spy in city centre for recipe books :) You can buy Vanilla Extract here ... we've used it at work when baking sugar cookies. I think it was purchased at Al Meera or Lulu Al Gharaffa which is where most of the grocery items we need get purchased. Ironically there are also other things that contain alcohol that can be purchased here like vinegar and mouthwash.

I wouldn't think you would get many replies to this publically on the board considering it would be completely illegal. Not only would it be illegal for you to hire someone as a bartender, but it is of course illegal to serve alcohol to other people as the alcohol permit only allows people to purchase alcohol for personal consumption in their own residence. :) edited by DebK on 19/11/2011

So, anyway, which IKEA is better out of Dubai and Abu Dhabi? And which serves the best meatballs? Been to both and I like both. The one in Dubai has more to offer in terms of other stores that are around it. The Yas Island one is in the middle of nowhere. (Or at least what seemed like the middle of nowhere although eventually there will be a mall nearby.) The only thing near it was Ferrari World (which I guess is an indoor amusement park.) As for meatballs -- no idea. We never eat at IKEA.

It may very well be your laundry detergent. I work as a pre-school teacher and so often come home covered with various stains on my clothes. Mostly various colours of paint in the shape of little hands. Haha! (Why is it that little ones must touch everyone and everything as soon as they have the dirtiest hands possible?) I find that Tide gets it out every time. :) So I would try a different brand of laundry detergent before spending money on a new washing machine. ~ Deb edited by DebK on 11/11/2011

Not sure if you can fit it inside, but with lots of rope and bungee cords I am sure you could fit it on the roof. Haha! When I had first moved here, we had been given the name/location of a shop that made us a mattress to go on top of our mattress. You went in and chose the type of foam, the thickness, etc and they made it up to look like a store bought mattress. Unfortunately I can't even pass that information on to you because the shop was in a bank of shops that were torn down earlier this year and I have no idea where they all moved to! I know that you want your guests to be comfortable, but the reality of it is that they won't be here longterm so I would really be asking myself how much I wanted to spend on a mattress that might only get used a couple of weeks out of every year. Might be better off asking your guests to buy a memory foam topper to bring with them that you can pay them back for. That being said, I'm pretty sure there will be more than a mattress that makes the return trip. ;) We are continuing to kick ourselves for a few things we looked at IKEA and didn't bring back. We may have to take a flight to Dubai for a weekend early next year and go with just carry on luggage so that we can bring back some treasures. :) (Of course I will have to present the idea of a trip to Dubai in some other way to my husband as IKEA might not be a selling point for him.) I do have to say though... I'm jealous of the bbq! We keep looking at those and then decide we don't want to spend that kind of money... but I miss grilling! edited by DebK on 10/11/2011

I think you should go to IKEA. ;) Haha! We were in Abu Dhabi for the weekend and went to the IKEA on Yas Island. Hubby has promised that if we are still here in Doha when the IKEA finally opens up that I can spend a couple of thousand riyals there. (I should probably get that in writing. ;) ) We are kicking ourselves for not having purchased the laptop stations we saw that were on for 99 AED. We only had one checked bag so could probably have purchased at least one of them and brought it back with us.

I think the hairdressers at Glow are ok, but just ok. I suppose it depends on your type of hair. They kind of have the monopoly here regards 'Western' hair salons, and I think they capitalise on it (of course!) I also don't like the fact that so many different girls are part of the process - one to wash, one to cut, another to dry, etc etc. And I REALLY resent the 'tip' advice sheet at reception! If I want to tip, that's for me to decide thank you very much - who and how much. Being bl**dy-minded, it makes me do the opposite and not tip at all! Quite frankly, I think Glow is very over-rated and the prices are outrageous - I wouldn't expect to pay that much in a top-notch salon in the uk. I always have my hair cut & coloured every time I'm back home, which is quite frequently at the moment, so I'm a happy bunny :) They seriously have a sheet of "tip" advice?!?!? That little piece of knowledge honestly would make me hesitate about even going and giving them a try.

In our 2 1/2 years here, I have only eaten at a subway (the one in the food court at city centre) once. I didn't like the taste of the meat and have never eaten at another one here since. Which is kind of odd because back in Canada or in the US, I love to eat at Subway. Maybe I just chose the wrong sandwich to try... which one/s would you highly recommend?

Hi Dan Lou, Unfortunately I can't help you with the directions... All I know is we follow old airport road out of Doha and we stay on that road... then on the right hand side you can see Barwa Village (and I believe there is a sign just before it). There's also a new set of lights and you turn right at them... then follow the roads back through. Once you get in there there is a sign that points towards Megamart, but personally I find there signage a little confusing. It's in the centrepoint building.... I know those aren't foolproof directions, but hopefully someone else can provide you with good directions. :)

It's not conveniently located for us either (we live over near Landmark area) but we like it better than the other ones. In fact, it's the only one that I have noticed that actually marks things down if they get within a couple of months of their best before date. For example, last weekend we went and stocked up on foods that have best before dates of Dec 2011 to Jan 2012. Cans of Pringles chips were 2 QAR, Orville Reddenbacher Smart Pop microwave popcorn (pkg of 3) was 1 QAR, box of Cheerios was 4.75 QAR, Gardetto's snack mix was 4.75 QAR. I am well stocked on popcorn for the next few months ;)

im sorry debk but i dont think there is anything funny about that at all. even given that the woman should not have pushed in to the front of the queue, are you really saying that you think getting smacked in the face by a man would have been something she should seriously have considered as an appropriate response? and by extension there is ANY behaviour a woman exhibits should be met with violence from a man? My main point is that SHE did not appear upset about the situation she stuck around to get her photo taken after the fact. If YOU were upset, would you have stuck around? Plus, as someone else mentionned despite it being a video clip the angle does not allow the viewer to actually see if contact was made. Additionally, when you can see her face there is no redness to suggest that she was actually hit. edited by DebK on 30/10/2011

Stretch, I agree with you that regardless of who they are a person does not have a right to hit another. However, her behaviour also contributed to the situation and she is not without blame. Should he have hit her? No. Should she have jumped to the front of the queue pushing her way in to get a photo instead of waiting for her turn? No. So neither party is in the right. Maybe next time she tries to jump to the front of the queue she will remember this experience. :) Plus, she stuck around after to get her photo taken so obviously she wasn't very upset about the entire situation. I know that if I was upset I would not have hung around to get a photo with the guy. edited by DebK on 30/10/2011

I think that all depends on your compound/residence. We were recently given a "Accomodations residence guide" for all the compounds/apartments that are used by my husband's employer and in this guide it states that quiet hours are 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. during the work week and 1:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Does your compound have a booklet with the rules of living there or anything like that?

I can't say I am surprised at all... there are a few places where there are times when I won't even buy the fresh produce because of the conditions of the store. Carrefour (any of them) usually tend to be sub-standard (in my opinion), but are okay in a pinch sometimes. Thanks for the heads up though of which one to NOT try getting anything at this week. :) Hate making a wasted trip for things.

Hi Anthea, I know there are at least a few other families in your situation. At the Kindergarten (Kid'n Around Kindergarten) where I work we have several students in pre-school/reception who have older siblings attending the Madinat Khaliffa branch of Compass which is located just across the road from us. It makes easier pickup for the parents since both schools are right there. I know for a fact that we have available spots in our reception level for a child who is 4.

Not sure if it works for flies... but I know that tucking Bounce fabric softener sheets in your clothes when walking about helps repel mosquitoes. So might work on flies too. (I know it would repel me because I hate the smell of Bounce.) Or you could create a frog pond in your sitting area and about a dozen frogs should help with the problem. ;) Personally, I use one of those electronic fly swatters and just eliminate the problem!

If you live in a compound, a good way to meet people is to get out and about and go for evening walks. Don't wait for the other person to say hello first... just be friendly and greet those that you see. You never know when one of the greetings as you pass by will turn in to a longer conversation. I've met a lot of the people I know through my work or my husband's work. So if either employer offers staff/family social functions go to them. It can be awkward at first, but after a bit you start getting to know people.

After being here for 2 1/2 years I still love Doha. Sure, there are moments where I get irritated, but in all honesty there were days when I got irritated living back in Canada. Sometimes things in the villa break down, but hey that also happened in our house back in Canada. I think the main difference that sometimes contributes to a person's frustration level on those days that in Canada I would have known who to call to get something fixed, or where to go to find a replacement for something. Here, it sometimes takes a little while longer to get things done because I have called the wrong person or don't know where to go to find something. I also drive here, and it's really not as bad as what I thought it would be. I'm not a nervous driver though (probably a result of some harsh winter condition driving on busy roads) so it takes a lot to phase me when I'm behind the wheel. Like VRDoha though -- I don't have kids. So maybe that makes a huge difference. I also work and find that my outlook is a little more positive than some other people I interact with who don't work. I think they get a tad bored as they're a bit older and at home all day without kids. I've never been to an "expat woman" social gathering, but have not had any difficulty meeting people without that... but again perhaps that is because our living accomodations are supplied by my husband's employer at specific locations throughout the city. So we're not having to do the villa hunt, and our neighbours are all employees of where my husband works. Lots of things to do around Doha ...

I don't think that every place bothers with advertising. Many of the TA's at the school where I teach applied for the job because they heard about it from someone else. I would suggest doing some research to find the schools where you would like to work and then sending off your cv to them or popping in with your cv to them.

For things to put in the goody bags, I would recommend going to one of the Al Rawnaq stores. You can also get balloons and some decorations there. For invites -- I'd probably just go to Hallmark. I do remember seeing some there last year when I was looking for Thank You note cards. For the plates - I know that Carrefour has some of these types of things for birthday parties. Essentially this variety of stores means going to three different stores, but at least C-4 and Hallmark would be in the same mall.

The buildings are going to be owned by Qataris, who are going to be Muslims... and according to Islam dogs are unclean. That could very well be the reason for no dogs being allowed.
