Ban on Domestic Helper still continues. Though Hiring locally available maids seem easier choice, but since their recruitment is against their country's law, they won't be able to go home (they will not be allowed out once in the country). Going through recruitment agency is legal method and you may find replacement if the maid didn't work well. good luck. Hi, I'm concerned about this post above - anyone knows if this is still the case? I hired a Filippino nanny in February (she came on a tourist visa initially), she has all required papers here in the UAE and her annual leave is coming up for Christmas. Are you saying that there's a chance she can't return to the UAE after her annual leave is over?....

There are no professional book binders in the UAE that do these jobs. I've looked for book binders for a few months to have my daughter's artworks bound and a few other things and they either only do commercial quantities/ jobs or they are DESCO-style cheap copy shop places that lack the fundamental understanding of what book binding means. I ended up taking everything with me to Europe over Christmas break and having it done there by an old-school bookbinder, which turned out absolutely beautiful and a lot cheaper than any job that I was offered here. If these are heirloom pieces you're talking about, don't risk them by giving them to unqualified labor here!

Houseofcakes in International City (you can order online and they deliver). They do great themed cakes which look amazing and the taste is surprisingly good. Used them for various occasions (work, children's birthday party) and they were always a winner.

Hi all, I'm so frustrated with maintenance companies here in Dubai... I've tried so many and just always seem to end up with bad ones... Just having a painting nightmare again and am so tired of shouting at people to use their common sense when carrying out works and simply giving a damn about the outcome of their work... I would really like to have a general maintenance contract for my villa so that all jobs are taken care of by one company instead of having "the A/C guy", "the paint guy" etc. but I'm reluctant to bind myself to someone and then finding out that they do bad work... Does anyone have any experience with Hammers & Ladders who have been advertising their services quite heavily lately or with Renovo? I recently used Repair+ for A/C cleaning and really liked them but their maintenance contracts are extremely expensive and not sure I would actually use them that much throughout the year... Thanks for sharing!

I used both for various moves and E-Movers are by orders of magnitude better! The Box did a very sloppy job, we had to do so much work ourselves. They completely misjudged how long everything would take and they didn't do any small handiman jobs while E-Movers did all of that. Would not use The Box again.

Had mine done by Apache Glass Fitout, did a great job. It was surprisingly difficult to find someone in Dubai doing this seemingly standard job. [email protected] 04-2382441 050-6266467 056-1138386 Managing Director's name is Abdulnasser Hanieh. It helps a lot if you speak Arabic though...

Hi Fairfield, thanks! As I said, the contractor works a lot in Emaar properties so I think they have permission to come/go as they please that's why I never questioned them - which seeing your reply might have been stupid. We didn't move any water pipes etc, but we did have a second sink installed in the bathroom so I guess that's an issue for them :(( Will try and see them in person. Am really annoyed because I wouldn't have had an issue getting a permission, it's just they these guys convinced me that it's not needed if the work is inside and doesn't affect structures as in changing walls... Thanks!

I heard somewhere that you can tell DEWA you got evicted for the reason that he or his family will move in and DEWA will then check when the next person tries to register the account, if it's the same name as the landlord/a family member. If that's not the case (meaning: it has been rented out to a different person, hence the reason for the eviction was incorrect), they can't register with DEWA or have to pay compensation in the order of 1 year's rent to the previous, evicted tenant... Did anyone ever do that and get such a compensation? Would be interesting because we have to move as well due to "landlord moving in" but our LL owns 26 flats in our building and its curious he has chosen ours to move into... By the way- if the eviction note was NOT certified by a notary public, it is null and void! A simple letter is not sufficient, it has to be notarized in order to be valid!!

Oasis Center currently has a collection for refugees in Syria. They're particularly looking for warm clothing for the cold winter and children's clothes but take everything. It's in collaboration with the UAE Red Crescent. Not sure how long it runs, but maybe that's on their website.

Went to Safa Park 2 weeks ago and Gates 1, 2 were open, all other gates were closed. The Archive is open. If you want to get there from Gate 2 you need to walk straight to the lake, turn right towards the Mosque and then walk all the way straight into SZR direction. No shortcuts or straight pathways because all the interior is closed/fenced off. Staff at The Archive told me they have about 10 customers a day max so if you're looking for a quiet place to work, that's probably it ;)

Update: Went today to get the PoA done. Very smooth process, but make sure you bring enough cash: Cost for mutual general PoA (husband and wife): 125 AED for the 2 Arabic versions 600 AED for the 2 translations into English (you get 3 copies of each document with English and Arabic together, so you can basically throw away the original Arabic paper; if you are an Arabic speaker you could also skip the translations and only get the Arabic version notarized I guess but I'm not sure) 420 AED for the 2 notary public stamps If you need photocopies of your passport and residency, they are 1 AED per copy if you do them there. Important: Bring your marriage certificate if you don't have the same last name and/or you are not under your husband's sponsorship but have your own visa! The notary public was nice enough to believe that my double-barreled last name indicates that we're actually married but he did stress that it's "unusual" that I have my own visa and normally this would require a proof of marriage.

Hi Shella, where is Dulux in Satwa? Thanks! Thanks ladies. We saw the paint in Ace but after going direct to Dulux at Satwa it is much cheaper. Just wanted to check there were no other places with a range of odourless paint like Jotun. Thanks again though. KB75....unfortunately I cant recommend a painting company as we are very lucky in that our landlord pays to paint our villa every 3years. The only reason we are buying our own paint is that we want to choose our own colours. The landlord allows us to paint our house whatever colour we like as long as we paint it back to their preferred white if we leave. Sorry I couldn't help. edited by Shella on 29/09/2014

Where can I find this Benjamin Moore paint? Today I discovered the Japanese Kansai Paint (Umm Suqueim sliproad, next to Meroe), they also have low VOC paint and some more great features (eg, antibacterial/mold-preventing paint for bathroom, washable paint for kids room etc.). But they're very pricey- they offer a painting service with their paints and that's 39 AED/sqm... Not sure what the price is if you only buy the paint but I assume that all other brands come cheaper... Nevertheless, cool store. Truly odourless (i.e low or no VOC) in Dubai are Caparol (price comparable to Jotun) or Benjamin Moore (Dulux prices). Anything else is a nightmare especially Jotun, I have tried them all for myself and professionally. Caparol does not apply well and their range of colours is not great. Benjamin Moore has lots of lovely colours and even their woodwork finish paints are pretty much totally odourless.

Try theauctionhousedubai.com. Auctions every Saturday I believe, but call in advance to find out. Very nice sofa sets, some beds, lamps etc. Good prices, would say slightly higher than dubizzle but you have everything in one warehouse and just need to view the items, no need to drive to different people's homes wihtout knowing what to expect...

Saw the corpse of a large beautiful dog today on SZR, chained to the divider in the middle.. It is beyond me to think why anyone would kill their animals - and why try and do it in the most cruel, perverse way you can think of (poor doggy either died of thirst or heatstroke or was run over...)... In my view, punishment should be very severe for these cases of cruelty...

Brasslight UAE. I think they closed their Dubai shop (used to be in The Curve building on SZR), but still have a showroom in Abu Dhabi and I believe in Jebel Ali, need to check their website. Alternatively, Heritage Touch in Al Quoz (it's in the street where the Sun & Sand Sports Outlet store is, just a bit further down on the right hand side) or the Antique Museum (Al Quoz, opposite Al Serkal Avenue in a side street)

Spoke to Nakheel Security this morning- yes, it was a burst water pipe but the burst occurred "long time ago" and was the cause of all the issues in Oceana and MR. It took them that long to identify where the issue is and now they're fixing it. So there was time for a warning and they admitted "yes, residents should have been informed but someone forgot".

Wish they would get around to actually install cameras on the pedestrian crossings... oh, and finally build a pedestrian walkway between Marina Residences 1-3 and Fairmont. It's absolutely insane that Ittihad Park is literally just 2 walking minutes from MR, but due to the lack of pedestrian walkway it's dangerous to go there, especially with a stroller and kid...

It seems to be a joint effort by DEWA and Nakheel to finally get the water pipe issues for Oceana and Marina Residences 1-3 sorted out. Oceana was recently flooded, in Marina Residences they cut the water in regular intervals for full days because there are always issues and parking or lower floors or townhouses flood. They dug up all the pipes and closed the lanes starting exit of Marina Residences (that's why the tunnel is closed as well). I live in MR 1 and have a prime view from the elevators onto the whole mess. It's a huge hole, not sure this will be a quick thing, but at least we still got water... (keeping my fingers crossed that this will stay like that for the weekend). I think it's fine if they need to do repairs but why on earth did they not inform/ warn residents so we could have planned for this? It's insane that they just do these things without announcement - in front of me, the Dubai Red Bus tour bus was stuck for 2 hrs... I'm sure the tourists were thrilled.. Why can't the authorities communicate stuff like that beforehand so people can plan??

Hi all, I never had a maid before, but having a newborn, moving from an apartment into a house and starting to work again now make a good case to get some help. I'm looking for either a live-out or live-in maid that knows Dubai already. Need help with the usual stuff (house cleaning, laundry, garden, cooking would be amazing). Would prefer older lady but happy to consider other ages as well. Nationality not important as long as she speaks good English. If anyone is looking for a new employer for their recommended maid, I'd be very happy to talk. Since I am new to the whole maid topic, I would prefer a recommended lady with experience over a new lady from an anonymous maid agency... Thanks a lot!!

Absolutely worth it- you won't believe the dirt that comes off when they clean the filters (I watched it and it's amazing)!! You really don't want to breathe that in! I used Jim Will Fix It and was very happy with them, but they're quite pricey - they charge by independent unit. Call them to get a quote.

Hi all, I'm looking for a nursery for my daughter (will be 6 months in October). Am very surprised most nurseries only accept kids starting 18 months... Only one I came across for babies was Willows but that's quite far from where I'll be living (Arabian Ranches, both Raffles and JA Int'l in AR only accept starting 18 months...), so was wondering if you know of any other nurseries that accept younger babies? Thanks a lot for any insights!!

Thanks everyone... Just been to Lulu though and he says he can't cut this type of key and to try Satwa. Does anyone know where shouts in Satwa The key places are! At over 5 months pregnant I don't fancy trekking around there! If you're at the big roundabout in Satwa coming from SZR, take the third exit to the street where all the tailors/fabric stores are. At the beginning of the street on the right hand side, you see yellow key signs on some shops. Take the shop with the second key sign, "Al Baraka Lock Repairing", guy's name is Kul Prasad. 04-3496101, he copies even the heavy security keys with the little dots and car keys (50% hit rate with me, some worked some didn't and he needed to correct them). However a warning: as I posted in a previous post, they forced a very high price without much interest in negotiations (150 AED per key).

If you're looking for something immediate: Meydan Beach Club on JBR Walk currently runs a promotion where the daily entrance fee during the week (no consumption included) is 150 AED! Quite a good deal considering their normal charges. Weekend however is 495 AED incl. some consumption voucher (forgot for how much). Promotion runs I think until end of this month but better call them to make sure.

It's also called the "BBC building", easy to find. It's actually Internet City (although it's location is almost closer to Knowledge Village). Opposite Gloria Hotel and the "Twin Towers". If you come from SZR from the Sharjah direction, take the exit to Internet City/Knowledge Village before the Twin Towers, turn left immediately (on your left is the Choueifat school), go to next traffic light, turn left again and the building is ahead of you after the next roundabout. If you come from Al Sofouh road from the JBR direction, turn right at Dubai College, then right again, then left at traffic light.

Actually racial discrimination is only part of the post. read the one about the curtain shop. No race issues there......and on another note. I find it funny how indignant a "white" person gets when on the recieving end of racisim..... Really janatks? Why do you find that funny? Surely any normal person has the right to feel indignant at being on the receiving end of racism, no matter what colour they are. True, but unfortunately, racisim is rampant in these parts. Can also be found on EW and the OP also displays a certain discrimination when she expects better prices and special treatment because she goes to "satwa: and not to the Mall. Wow, ok ... Had no idea this would spark such a discussion... My initial post was just meant to point out that I'm disappointed about the development of the shopping experience in Satwa because of 2 reasons a) Noticeable increase in price differentiation between different customer groups in Satwa. And yes, I've tried it out by sending friends of other cultural backgrounds into the stores and ask for the same items I had asked for a day before and they were quoted much lower prices and got me stuff I needed. Yes, this differentiation has always existed but I've been in Dubai for a long time, also before the financial crisis when inflation rates were at its peak and rents were much higher than now and it wasn't as bad, there was still a sense of "fair markup" or "starting point for discussion" vs. "ripoff" which seems to have vanished now. b) Having a very different shopping experience in places like Satwa, Deira, Karama or the Souk vs. the more anonymous malls (meaning: haggling, having long conversations with shopkeepers about how hard life is etc.) was always part of the experience and I liked it a lot. Now I have a feeling there's no patience anymore for that, especially with Western people where it appears as if shopkeepers/owners just want to get the money in quickly and have developed an attitude of "they can all pay high prices so either they pay what I say or they can leave". I'm not accusing anyone of racism here and I'm not saying this is exclusive or everyone behaves like that, but it's a noticeable difference to before that I can see. And some posts below make total sense to me (eg, the point about Jumeirah being close and traders getting complacent) in that context. Nevertheless, I regret this development. @janatks- of course I expect better prices in Satwa than in Dubai Mall! It's a different shopping area with much lower rents for shops than say Mall of the Emirates, different salaries for staff, different setup altogether etc. You can't tell me that you would find it normal to go to Karama, Satwa, Deira etc. and pay exactly the same prices or more for an item as in a store in the mall... And that has absolutely zero to do with racism, that's pure economics! Special treatment - I don't think I ever said that and not sure where you got it from. But yes, I do expect to be treated nicely and fairly as a customer in any store I go to no matter its location. I don't see any racism in that at all.

My favorites are people in the fresh vegetable/fruit departments that "sample" the fruits. Some mothers take their kids in the shopping carts and encourage them to take a grape or 2 or munch on mint leaves they pick and then don't buy anything. Also good: open bread at Waitrose, Geant etc. The number of times people take bread with their hands, check it and hten put it back... I've tried to talk to some of them, trying to make them understand that this not hygienic and actually plain stealing if you take fruits without paying, but all of htem ignored me. Now it's basically Ripe market or packaged fruit/vegetables for me...
