Obviously there must be a place that does them locally for a reasonable price if people earning a small wage can afford them. Any ideas or suggestions? edited by Coriander on 03/03/2013 Coriander, Nicolas and Asp in Dubai Healthcare City. Here is a link to the website: http://www.dubaipostgraduate.com/ Both my children have braces from there... we initially went to Nicolas and Asp on Beach Rd and I was quoted K24/child!!! Times that by 2 and I could buy a small new car! In Healthcare City, we are paying about K8 and they give a sibling discount.

WIS markets itself as an IB school, even though they do GCSE in Years 10 and 11. I have two children who transferred after 4 years at WIS and they have had no problems. In fact, the converse... they are both thriving in the new environment.

I think it depends on where you might be making a claim, ie. visiting a doctor/medical facility. If you live in Dubai and visiting medical facilities in DXB, then no prob. However, if you have a medical emergency in Abu Dhabi, then it COULD be a problem. Recently, one of our DXB rugby players was injured (seriously) during an AD rugby tourni. The hospital in AD would not accept the medical insurance (albeit that of a well known airline) and the poor boy had to be transferred back to Dubai for surgery, etc.

hi ladies... maybe you could give a 'broad' idea of where you live? What are you expecting in terms of babysitting services (hours/what kind of supervision/how old are your children)? My DS is 15 and would love the occasioanl opportunity to earn some extra money... he is very mature and amazing with younger children... has 'cousin' and younger brother experience... if there is an opportunity, I would also like something close to home, which is Arabian Ranches vicinity...

If I put anything remotely healthy in her lunch-box, she would throw it away or bring it home to be thrown away. Every now and again, I get away with putting in a chicken salad. My youngest will often request a crisp sandwich! When he does, I oblige as I know that he will eat it!

A pie or a sausage roll? I always have a few frozen ones in the freezer, ready to heat up for lunchboxes. What about making a quiche? When I use bread, I always vary the type... Ciabatta with chicken lettuce and mayo one day, maybe a hot dog on another. Since most schools have mictowaves, I sometimes pop in a homemade spag bol or sweet and sour chicken with rice or noodles...

We went to this brunch last weekend and I can confirm it's really lovely. You can sit inside or out and at tables or on the grass on blankets and deck chairs for a picnic style brunch. It's two for one until end of Jan which makes it even better. You are right opposite the Irish village so have the duck pond and little park there. We had a great time and would definitely go again! Yes, Daisy, great for all those reasons! The food was lovely, a wide selection and there was also live entertainment.... nothing to eloborate, a guy playing the guitar and singing... I will absolutely be going again soon!

FYI... it is Umm Sequiem Road until after you pass over the Bypass Road! :) Sorry, don't believe that is true. We lived at AR for seven years and once you were over the Ranches interchange the road has always been Al Qudra NOT Umm Suqueim. If you drive down Umm Sequiem with AR behind you and Polo Club on right, there is a road sign just before the 611 and opposite the Layan Villas. It says Umm Sequiem Road! I suppose it could have been put there by mistake!

Certainly, we have a list of chores which include the likes of: polishing shoes, emptying the bin, setting and clearing the table, emptying the dishwasher and hanging up the washing. DH occassionally has them sweep outside and wash the cars.

In any other country, the owner/seller pays the commission. In DXB, it is the reverse (usually)... the buyer/tenant pays any agency fees/commission.

If you have the blue Entertainer, there is a voucher in it for NOMAD, which is at the Jumeirah Creek Hotel (next to the tennis stadium). We went late last year for brunch and they had a 'buy one get one free special running'. It was so fab, we went back again about 3 weeks later! If you don't have the book, call and ask if they have a promo... they did extend it a couple of times.

Ours get AED100/week... they have to buy their own airtime and pay for any movie/bowling type excursions if they meet up with friends. My youngest, with his pocket money and birthday gift money last year, saved up for an iPad.

Yes :D thats exactly what I want... load of fruit and a pile of cream on top! Never knew you could buy the meringue base at Spinneys/Waitrose. Thanks heaps!! Just trying to think of the section you will find it... have seen by the sweets section. The base is a hard meringue.... but by the time "wet" ingredients are loaded, it becomes dead right!

Yes, about 5 hours... instead of water, use beer. Keep an eye on it and top up if necessary... also, add some cloves and brown sugar.

Please go to Dragonmart... cant remember the exact name of the shop, but it is one of the bigger wall paper shops down towards the furniture end. I used a Chinese chap from there... it cost me AED50(for one feature wall) but I had to collect him and drop him off afterwards. He spoke very little English, so we had to sign most of the time! Having said that, he did an excellent job!

And just to be clear, duh, no, he is more of a girlfriend than a boyfriend!!! This statement is a bit troubling though.......... do you mean that you and he are close? Sounds like she means she thinks he bats for the other side ... I don't think that he is gay... he is just not my type. Never thought of him in anything other than a friend way.

Tell her No. 1 husband is quite enough thank you very much. Ask her why she would think that and probably be so upset that she had asked that the friendship would never be the same or most likely end. Presuming it's not true. Not an iota of truth to her accusation!

Probably laugh and ask her if that is a serious question as it is a ridiculous statement. That was the initial response, but then the mind started to work... long standing family relationship, Christmases, New Years, birthdays and all the rest together... I don't know how to get past this... she will always be suspicious, right? And just to be clear, duh, no, he is more of a girlfriend than a boyfriend!!!

... and the official language in Pakistan is English. Oh really? That's interesting. Apologies, it is both English and Urdu! Here is my scenario though... I work for a relocation company. On behalf of one of my assignees, I responded to an advert for an apartment. The ad is in English, not Arabic or Urdu. As such, I don't think I am being unreasonable by expecting to speak to an English consultant?

Are you new in the UAE? If you aren't, then this can't be the first time you've encountered someone here whose English is limited. Yes, they *should* have a good command of the English language, especially in customer-facing roles, but the reality is that many do not. It helps to simplify sentences, not be too wordy and speak slower than usual. Nope... been here for 4+ years! This is the worst experience ever! Speaking slowly and annunciating words does not help at all!

Again, there are 2 x 5%: one is the security deposit (payable to LL)... the other is the agency 'commission' payable to agency. Pay the security deposit, but don't pay the commission cheque yet. (until you are satisfied that any issues have been addressed!)

The company is a reputable one. When you review the lease make sure the following is included: Specify number of bedrooms Lease must be renewable Tenant responsible for minor maintenance during tenancy for up to AED?? (get them to quantify the amount) Early termination clause A copy of the title deed A copy of the landlord’s passport The rent cheque should be payable to the LL (ie. name on title deed and passport). If the title deed is in more than one name, there must be a power of attorney from other parties. There is a big Damas tree problem in AR. If the garden has DAMAS trees, tell agent that LL must be responsible for removing. The agency fee and the security deposit are two different things. The security deposit is payable to the LL. The other 5% to the realtor (try to defer handing this over to the agent until you have inspection the property and happy that any maintenance has been addressed). Good luck!

Having said that when I go home I'm expected to sort myself out and use my own money, so it's give and take :) Why is that? It it because friends and family visiting us in DXB are on holiday, whereas when we go home, we aren't (on holiday)?

Do you currently 'pay as you go'. I should not think that the ortho would be able to bill you extra. What if you were leaving Dubai? The situation would be the same and you would have to find someone else. Dr Nicholas and Asp (training centre) only use a specific type of brace. If you went there and your DS does not have the same type, they would remove what he has and put new ones on. This could be expensive as your son has already had his for 2 years. I can tell you that they (N&A) will be able to give you a free consult and advise you on where to go. I know all of this as a friend of mine recently moved to DXB and she needed an ortho for her DS with already existing braces. Since we already go to N&A, I made enquiries on her behalf and was given this info.

I think an Educational Psychologist would be preferable... try Christa Strauss. She is based in Knowledge Village. She is an EP... I took my son to see her and she 'diagnosed' dyslexia. He had previously seen an OP, but OP just said that he does not have left or right dominance and that is why he swaps letters. Her e-mail address is christa 3 strauss at gmail dot com It is highly unlikely that your medical insurance will cover the consultations but at the end of the day, it is comforting to have a diagnosis. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your daughter's epilepsy... I recently found out that there is a 30 day window at the start of the school year to move to another school. We moved from one to another and the one we got into had us on a waitlist right up until the last minute. I am sure that your daughter's school will be able to fill the spot she vacates very quickly as demand exceeds supply. I suggest that you have a meeting with your school head but be sure to take some medical records, doctors reports to the school. Once you have explained the situation, there is a chance that they might be empathetic... Good luck!

I had curtains made for our villa by a company called Al Rohn Al Hadee Furniture. I dealt with Saju... The shop is on the main road in Satwa, close to the Post Office. Whilst I went to the shop, they will also come to your home with a wide selection of samples. Saju was prompt and professional... I picked out the fabric in the shop and he came to my home to measure. The curtains were ready in a week and his team came to install them! I am so pleased with the job... Saju's number is 0508476003. I paid AED8000 for 5 rooms.
