Given the lack of transparency here, the instability of the market, and the fact that the laws can change from day to day, this is not a place where I would want to invest my money in property. Your job and income could be here today, gone tomorrow and the laws are not strong enough (or enforced) to protect you. The risk far outweighs the reward. edited by Monkey Face on 25/07/2012 Good point. Several people I know who invested here are under huge pressure now to sell their houses as they recently lost their jobs. Their employers were nice enough to keep their visas open for 6 months but after that, they either have to find another job here ( near impossible) or leave. Most the the houses are being sold to cash buyers right now ( Syrians, Lebanese, Egyptions) They are fleeing conflict and need an exit. Just because propoerty is going up does not mean that the economy or job market is better. It isn't.

I have no idea how we are going to resolve it. We have just sent an email to Emaar to find out how much the LL owes. On the name and shame board, it says 2010 and 2011 are outstanding. Our LL is quite nice so I am hoping he will pay for it and quickly. The neighbors are on vacation so we might have to start using their bins to ensure collection. It really stinks

Well we have just found out that our LL hasn't paid the charges either and the rubbish is piling up.... We pay enough rent as it is. I think it is disgraceful to implement this rule in the middle of summer. It has taken everyone unaware.

She was supposed to be a big help, we are moving into a new house and I thought it would be a great asset to have her. I feel bad leaving her at home when we are heading off, so we always give her the choice, she can have the time off at home or join us and she always decides to come along. Well there is your answer! She thinks she is on holiday. I always made it quiet clear to my maids that when they travel with me, they are working. When they go back to the Philipines, they are on holiday. If you are paying her to work, regardless of where she is, she should work. Make it clear to her now before she ruins your whole holiday

Hi This is probably a long shot but would anyone on this board living in Meadows 9 with kids at DIA be interested in car pooling with me. I would be able to pick the kids up from school every morning and take them. In return, I would need mine brought home at 2.30pm 4 days per week. If this interests anybody, please let me know. TIA

How sad! A maid gets to go home once a year to see her family and saves up for it. imagine having to fork out money at the airport to travel... for jaywalking!!!! while there are so many other henious crimes being committed in Dubai and the perpetrators get off with a slap on the wrists.

All I am saying is that there is a vast choice of schools out there that are established, well managed, offer the same prorgamme as JBS and are half the price. If you live in Jumeirah, it's a great option but apart from location, I really can't see how they justify such prices.

I am sorry but I strongly disagree with that. Their French programme is not for native speakers and they only have 2 x 45 minute lessons per week. JPS is the natural progression for students leaving the Chidlren Garden and most of these students are already fluent in French or native speakers yet JPS doesn't offer them a proper prgramme. My son is in year 3 in a different school and they offer a French A ( native) & B lessons 2 times a week and we pay 42K per year for the IB programme!!! We just supplment the French by speaking at home. If you look at the top of this page, there is a banner for JPS adversting for all year groups. They are not an established school and they are over the top with their fees. edited by derien on 28/06/2012 Derien I am assuming you mean JBS as JPS is a completely different school altogether Yes thanks Wigywig. I meant JBS

Hi Irooni, Nope, kids in bed at all hours, napping in afternoons, hours upon hours in the kitchen, eating huge meals 3 times a day, trips here there and everywhere, ferrying the guests for shopping expeditions .... no routine at all when we have visitors. What about you??????? Alismum, I bet all I have this is when your Husband's family comes. It is all related to being "irooni" and the expectations are families, specially in laws have. This past month my MIL was with us (for a 2nd month in a 3 month span). My sister and her family are moving back home and didn't renew their flat, so she, her husband, and 2 children under 4, and my other sister, are all here with me. I don't have a maid. The meal preparations, cleaning, washing, entertaining, never ending trips to Deira, Satwa and malls....all of this and off course the children going to school, homework, activities, playdates and birthday parties, as usual. after all the service, my MIL has had the nerve to fault and criticise my child rearing practices, cooking and housekeeping skills, to my sisters. When it's just us as a family, the whole house is as quiet as a graveyard by 8pm. We are up and running by 6 again. I have been sooo exhausted physically and mentally and busy running around like a headless chicken, I havent been able to keep up with the children's bed and wake time, and they had breakfast on the go, and my sister has bathed them a couple of times with her children instead of me. So now I am the worst mother in the world. The ***** she has said behind my back, about how my children are not clean, and malnourished cause of bad breakfasts, and how my car is dirty and my drawers are unorganised....... I am so sick and tired of her. She doesnt think of how hard it is to keep up with your own routine when yu have 1000 other things to do for everyone else. This is what I get for 2 months of endless service, waiting on her hand and foot and funding all her shopping!!!! A mother in law will never ever be your own mother. Wish my mum was alive:((( edited by Irooni on 27/06/2012 Why do you let them stay with you then? Sounds like they are jealous because you have everything figured.

JBS took over the facilities and campus of the American School & just adopted their fee structure. The school has no track record, is WAY overpriced, and is struggling to enroll children. You only have to look at the amount of advertising they do. I can guarantee that if you called them 1 day before the first day of school, they could offer you a place in any year group..... that is not a good sign. If you want the IB program, there are lots of more established schools that offer this, including DIA etc. I would stay away until they lower the fees and build up some form of track record. <em>edited by derien on 27/06/2012</em>

The question is - are you prepared to conform to stay? Nationals are a minority but if they start to stand up, if the UAE Dress Code, for their values, actually reminding ppl they are guests and the gment agrees with their stance and enforces rules such as a dress code, such as the one family one home, such as crack downs on dating - would you say 'and right they are, this is THEIR country, our long holiday', or would you start fighting saying how dare they try and enforce 'their values' on you? If you are happy to live in a different culture that will not change for you but still gives you outlets (clubs/bars) then I think you'll live here for as long as you wish n peace. Bu if you have no intention to do that and want to stand up for rights/freedoms you have in other countries (other countries you've chosen not to live in s they can't be that perfect) then you'll be getting your ticket ready fr te next stage in life.[/quote Of course, within reason. We all pretty much conform now. Other side of the question is can the UAE afford to rock the boat by enforcing stricter rules and values. 90% of the economy is....drum role Foreign Investments and sorry hate to say it Foreigners.

You said your child is bilingual? That is a huge factor in explaining why she might not seem to know as much as the others. She is processing 2 languages so expression can be difficult in the early ages. Later ( around 7/8) she will be as good, if not better than the others and will also speak 2 languages. Read a little more about biligualism and you will see that there is always a delay in the beginning.

Thanks ladies for your replies. Sometimes you know what you have to do ... you just need someone to reconfirm it to you! Yes, the injuries are from falling. He can be really clumsy. First time he fell against the coffee table and yesterday he fell off the sofa. Thankfully I have a camera and have been able to check exactly what happened. I have converted a small room off the lounge in to a play area, yet she does not take him in there and instead plays around the sofa. I have stressed so many times on my way out to work to take him in there to play with his toys, read books etc. There is no shortage of things in there to keep him entertained. He does not sustain such injuries when my and DH are with him as we know to sit next to him if he is on the sofa or if he is running wild, to take him to his playroom, but she does not seem to understand this. I think her sister feels she can do nothing, but regardless, I would expect a better response that just 'release her madam'. She sounds stupid and careless. Get rid of her! Good luck

My maid just adds to our weekly shopping list the items she requires. Usually some fish, rice, vegetables etc. The cost is probably 200 AEd per month extra. She also eats what we cook or cooks it for me. I also buy her toilletries and medication as well as 2 x 50 AED phone cards per month If you are going to set a budget, I would say 450 AED all-in for everything listed above.

IF you do go back to the UK, get *written permission* from your soon-to-be-ex husband that states he is OK with you and the kids leaving the country for an undefined period of time and get him to sign it. If he refuses, threaten to report his affair to the police. Be warned though that no matter how sweet revenge may sound right now, putting their father in jail in the UAE is probably not the greatest thing you could do for your kids. Excellent idea.

Do some of you not read the news out here....where it gets ugly here and fathers have taken the kids away from the mother....and the law has backed them up here. If she really wants a divorce she should go back to the uk. It's nearly summer and she may be going back there anyway. She can get help and be supported by her family. It's really not a good idea to start anything here in Dubai. Very very bad idea to start anything here!!!!

I never said that he was a bad Dad! He is a lousy husband and has lied, cheated and manipulated for over a year! And he is a Man in an extremely male oriented country. So good father, bad father, who cares? She likely doesn't have anyone else here to support her and she should tread very carefully from here on out. Better off in the UK until things are sorted out than here with the law on HIS side But, it is simply NOT fair to drag the children into something that possibly has nothing to do with them. If he is a good Dad, then how terrible to drag them away from him. You may say, "well, he should have thought about that before he had an affair", but at such a young age children cannot understand about affairs etc and nor should they. They just know that for some reason they can't see their Daddy anymore and they WILL blame themselves. If he is a bad Dad then maybe it would be different but Ranchesranger hasn't said anything about his ability as a parent. I also would not take the children away anyway (unless there was physical violoence involved, but again, no hint of that) as it will not help her case in anyway. And if she chooses to stay and divorce him ( which I think she is hinting at with regards to proceedings), how does she get a visa for herself and her kids? Does she have family? A job? Income?
