Anyone who thinks Jones the Grocer is gourmet obviously hasn't eaten in Europe. I have stopped ordering things there. They are overpriced and not worth it. ( C4 have better products) Their Truffles last November were OFF and that is because they had no idea how to store them. It is in my opinion a joke.

It should really be the other way around. When you go to apply for or renew your visa, you get your ID card. Why would you apply for an ID card to get your visa? That means the processes can never be linked because your ID will always expire before your Visa? STUPID <em>edited by derien on 18/01/2012</em>

I would not allow them to register your DH on a lower salary. AmyAus is right that there is usally a 2nd contract but in the case of a work dispute which ends up in the courts, it's the Labor contract that is used as reference and that is where they are trying to register a lower salary ( i'm guessing). I would refuse and see what other options they then give your Husband.

Place des Vosges is awesome. I used to live near there. It's very trendy and central, lots of bars, cafes, restaurants and art galeries. I would make sure that it is near your work though.

Our contract renewal date is the end of march, we informed the landlord that we wanted to stay and A few weeks later we heard back. Did you do this in writing? You should.

Thank you for all the replies, this is what we thought. I can't believe the company we rented from ( who act as a go between as our landlord speaks very limited english) told him that this was ok! Just tell them you have spoken to RERA and that they cant do that and that you are now waiting for the renewal papers from them

No he can't. The rule only applies to family members. He also needs to give you 1 years notice to do so. Gor to the Rent Committee

This situation aside, some of you make it sound like having dinner out on one's own is a big crime. Yes, on her birthday it's not done, but are you really saying that if your other half went for dinner alone you'd get on a plane and leave? Really? I'd expect to be able to have the odd meal out by myself (whether with friends or not) as could he. It was dinner - with extras, a massage was mentioned remember........the two combined seems a bit odd for a husband going out solo at night........ And then completely ignoring his wife's birthday!

The signs are there. She needs to send him a strong message as his behaviour is selfish and unacceptable. When it happened to me, I gave DH and altimatum and we work things out. Men are NOT the morons you make them out to be. If it was truly an "I forgot situation", he would feel bad and would have made it up to her. It's a sign and she needs to see that and do something about it.

Does the government actions have anything to do with the Muslim terrorists attacks on christians of late? there has been real bloodshed there in past weeks with churches attacked on Christmas day and many dead edited by derien on 11/01/2012 I was wondering the same thing. Unfortunately there is a famous singer there who is inciting this anger and violence, the people are listening to him. I was listening to a report on French News the other day and they interviewed a spokesman for the Government in the South of Nigeria who pretty much said that they were about to take matters into their own hands to stop the Muslim ( North). Well, as Nigeria is split between north and south with the major ports and oil being in the Christian south ( I beleive), maybe this is what they meant by punishment ?

Thanks everyone for your input! Have found a fab filipino housekeeper with impeccable British references & so far so good... Just FYI, this is what we have agreed on... AED 2000/month Fridays off 100AED/week for her own food/toiletries (my suggestion), paid Sunday each week. 8am-6pm 6 days per week We will swap a half day off for a nights babysitting if mutually agreable & organised 1 week in advance. 25 AED/hour for overtime if required. Coffee break mid morning & lunch break when ever she wants, or she can skip lunch break & finish 1 hour earlier on the nights she goes to bible class. No loans, but will pay her twice a month in arrears (2nd & 19th of each month) I occasionally top up her mobile phone at my discretion. She has her own single room with plenty of storage space & the rest from Ikea, TV, large fridge, bathroom. She cooks in our kitchen, has her own shelf in our pantry. It's a deal that seems fair, she's happy, I'm happy, the baby is happy, the dogs are happy! Now we've just got to keep communication open so that there's no confusion as we learn to work together. You are way overthinking this. You should not agree to swap 1/2 day off for one night babysitting etc or stipulate hours. You may find yourself paying a lot of overtime. Hi there, Just a quick question. If my hubby and I own a villa here (non UAE Nationals and non Muslim) and something happens to him (dies). What happens to the property? Does it automatically, immediately come to me (as in USA where right of survivorship stipulates that our properties are automatically mine and not subject to probate) or what? Does anybody know? We are looking at purchasing a villa here (rather than renting), but this is something that we need an answer to before we proceed. If you don't know the answer, is anybody able to point me in the right direction of who to ask? Thanks heaps No. You would have no rights to it here without a will.

Ginnee - I am in DIFC and Financial Services. Things are slow everywhere this year and quite frankly, alot of people I know or have worked with are on egde about redundancies. If I were you, I would be looking elsewhere too ( Meaning other GCC countries)

Try registering with a firm that specialises in Legal positions. Taylor Root etc.... It's pretty tricky for a good lawyer to stay out of work long here. If he's good, he'll find something.

After having partied in Dubai for 2 years in a lot of this places and with a lot of "Different" people, NORMAL for a night out is 12-25 K a night, but this.....its just NOT NORMAL, if it was normal it wouldn't be such a big deal right now, it doesn't happen every night, 387,988 AED for 3 hrs of music and drinking and a HUGE hangover the next day o_O No hangover drinking cristal , that's for sure
