No. The 5% agency fee is a one-off. There may be a small fee such as 200 aed for the Agency to administer the paperwork for renewal but that fee needs to be paid by the landlord. It sounds like the Agent and Ladlord have worked out that they can make more money out of this and would probably end up splitting the money 50/50. actually that 1 hour extra could be included in your 9-6 timing with more efficiency. While oft times improvement can be made unless you are full aware of the OP precise workload, abilities and time management skills among many variables this statement is simply sweeping. There can be many reasons for extended hours: Large workload; Poor delegation; Inept time management; Company culture; Contract requirement Peer expectation, plus many more. Have you identified the root cause for the extra hours? If so, we may be able to help with specific suggestions. If not, it may be a worthwhile exercise. FTR I worked 12+ hours a day plus travel time 5.5 days per week. After 2 years was shattered. Good point. Many companies here do not have automated accounting processes and the workload is double

Wow. You really are a softy. Your maid is definitely taking you for a ride. Mine earns 1800 per month and works a 6 day week. I also buy her food and other bits and pieces each week. She doesn't eat much anyway. She has asked me for public holidays in the past and even quoted names of friends who are getting this day or that day off. I couldn't care less. She gets a day when it suit us as a family. I am sending her home this Christmas and she has asked for December salary up front and I agreed only because I know her family will ask her for money and support. Maids earn a ****** good living in this country and they are getting more and more cheeky. I wouldn't dare ask my employer for half the things my maid has requested in the past. You do need to stay firm with them or otherwise, inch...yard. Oh, and 2500 for a 5 day week is ridiculous money. You have to factor free accomodation into that!

My husband called up the bank which we have our credit card with to inform them of a change of address and phone number. Unfortunately they were unable to process the request - despite asking him a whole host of security questions, all of which he passed with flying colours, they were not able to confirm that it was really him unless he called from his phone number that they hold on record. Which, incidentally, is the phone number he no longer has - hence his phone call! Complete fail. Something similar happened to us with a 4 letter bank. I kept calling back, again and again and each time I gave them the answers, they kept failing me. Once they even failed me on my own middle name!!!

I wanted to buy a "Galette des Rois" from them about a year ago. They were charging some ridiculous price for it, may 115 AED for the small one. It is about 4 times what it cost in France. It is a complete joke.

OMG Grace! They missed your wedding! Dibdab I feel your pain. They should have informed you earlier. I had guests a few weeks ago who came 2.5 hours late. 2.5 hours! I had rushed home from a prior engagement just to get home on time to bake a cake, make 4 different snacks and tidy up the apartment only to sit twiddling my thumbs for 2.5 hours while everything became cold. I wouldn't bother inviting them back. Honestly, we moved here from Switzerland ( the country of time) and I can't tell you the number of times I have lost it at people because they haven't bothered to call to tell me they're late. It's inadmissable and rude to be late and I don't put up with it. There is no excuse in this day and age. <em>edited by derien on 27/10/2011</em>

Anywhere else in the world, this would be backdated. It's just like the Salik Fiasco... all those people that never bothered to get the tag and then they waived all the fines. The idiots that did get the tag, well I guess they are just idiots ( Me included)

It's anyone's best guess Guinness as to exact timing but a deep recession is on the horizon and the UAE will be affected. Anyone who thinks this place is immune is bananas. I love the line that the Real estate agents give in the article " Everyone's moving money back here to escape the European Sovereign Debt".!!!!! Agents here are not qualified enough to act as advisors to the landlords. Some Landlords ask crazy prices then wonder why their properties sit empty for months on end. It's up the agents to guide them. And BTW, when is Dubai going align with the rest of the world and make the landlord pay the commission, not the renter!

Guiness - can I ask how much your average Dewa bill is in Summer and Winter. We are looking to move ASAP and may be interested. Our DEWA bills average 2700 - 3400 dh a month. Keeping in mind that I like the house to be icy cold (my kids wander around in sweaters!) The landlord is pretty good, he has maintenance people on staff that come out whenever we have an issue so no 20,000 dh DEWA bills! When are you looking for someone to move in? ASAP ?

I just wanted to say that a career change in your 30's is tough but absolutely do-able. I am unfortunately stuck in the same field so can't talk of my own experiences but you need to take inspiration from ladies like Eva Joly who went back to law school in her 30s, got a degree, then went on to be the investigative magistrate for one of France's most prominent corruption cases in France. She is now the party representative for the environmentalists. She started off as a Nanny for a French family! So you can change careers and you can suceed, you just need to believe in yourself. Good luck

It sounds like someone working for Du or Etisalat as they seem to know both numbers. Have you asked your DD whether she has given her numbers out to anyone or maybe written both down on a form recently? Might help to norrow down. I do think you should get the police inlvolved ASAP.
