Also, look into the practical sides of both courses - Law will probably have at least of year of clerking and Psych may have practical therapy time - ensure that you are able to fulfill the course needs here. Good on you.

I think I saw maids' sinks in that big shop on Sheikh Zayed Road - Maids R Us, they also sell maids' towels, maids' TVs, maids' bicycles, maids' scissors - you get the drift.

This isn't a "woe is me" post below because i actually love my little routines but just so you get a good idea of what can be done (easily) by your maid Thanks Molly, that is really helpful, I just need to know what is doable - I have always been **** at cleaning and didn't know if what I expected was way too much, but your post makes me feel like it is all doable. Thanks.

LOL Thanks ladies, I knew it was the case, just was concerned I was being picky - action list has been done, we will talk tonight and husband is telling her it's the last warning.

I am usually quick to defend maids and know that our maid is on a good wicket pay and condition wise, but need some input into whether I am being too harsh or am being taken for a ride. I feel totally taken for a ride at the moment, here's the background. Our maid started with us 14 months ago, initially to look after new born and we always made it clear that the baby was priority and the housework came second. Baby Desertboot started nursery last week, months ago when I registered at nursery we told maid that her main duties now would be housework and if she wasn't happy with that, we would be happy if she sought a more childcare type situation. She said she was more than happy to stay. It is the two of us and the baby to look after. All work clothes get drycleaned. We are in a 4 bedroom villa. We do all the cooking. Last week we asked her to do a schedule that she was happy with and show us, my only stipulation was that she stop wasting so much water washing minimal loads and that all the laundry was done and sorted before the weekend (this seems petty but I hate looking at things on the racks etc on the weekend after a week at work). She never showed us a schedule, on Friday morning I open verandah doors to look at a verandah that looks like a gypsy camp with clothes hung out everywhere, the TV cabinet has about 8 large items like books, ball etc under it, it is covered in dust, I went through fridge last night and threw out about 25 bottles of condiments that were months out of date, furniture is dusty, I am the one who changes placemats on table, our bedlinen has not been changed in a fortnight at least, my bathroom bin has garbage in it from 10 days ago, filthy teatowels shoved under sink etcetec. We are going to talk to her tonight, husband is doing a schedule for her today (no, it doesn't have polish shoes and massages in it!). Am I being harsh or is she taking the mickey? I am comfortable with her package - she receives AED2100 a month, all food and toiletries, 60 AED a week for taxis, Friday and Saturday off, we pay extra if we ever go out at night and she babysits and we send her home every 3 months, some of you will roast me for these benefits, but her benefits aren't the question here, her work ethic is. I am just outlining them so you know that we are reasonable employers. OK, let it rip and thanks in advance for input.....

Why did you pay? Should have called the police; shown the photos and khalas they would have charged them. Doesn't always work so smoothly - a taxi driver accused me of smashing into him and doing all this old damage to his car, there was no mark on my car and I apparently put dents and scratches all around his- I was so furious I called the police, who then said they knew exactly what was going on, but if I chose to take it to court they would have to impound car and confiscate my passport - for at least 3 months, probably more. I paid as well, just easier when I have to travel, but so infuriating.

And who better to snuggle up to at night than a little baby when you are having a rough time? So true and lovely. For what it's worth, my well meaning but childless friends often say, 'why don't you come here', 'do this' on weekends etc, and 'leave baby with the nanny'. They don't understand that after a hectic week at work, that holidays and weekends are my time with my baby and I wouldn't want to be away from her for a minute of it. Just take baby with you, book accomodation that is friendly - ie microwave, dishwasher etc and have a great time!

I would ask for the correct bill - I am also strict the other way and won't tsand for paying extra for stuff that we didn't eat - so it goes both ways. As others have said - 50 dirhams is a fair whack of someone's pay and it will get deducted.

Why don't you ask her what she would prefer? and make your decision based on that. She probably has a nightmare and long road journey if not flying close to her home town.

I read it as total of 100k - but I reckon it should be 100k each. that's how I read it too - so Wow! a big less that 1000dizzers each shop will really make them rethink their fake selling. Not.

Considering 92% of the population here is expatriate, then odds on that there are some thieves in that number, but i think you're talking about shiny Caucasian expats? Why is that demographic any less likely to have people with low morals amongst them? Shiny Caucasion? Tongue in cheek, it just irks me that 'expat' is only applied in certain circles to certain nationalities, when everyone here unless a UAE National is an expat.

Sorry to hijack thread CW, but does anyone here know if we can take our Sri Lankan helper to Australia with us on holiday? We are Australian citizens. Before anyone gets their pearls in a knot, we are quite capable of going on holiday by ourselves and this would be a non working treat for her.

American Hospital is giving out free infant seats this month to every new born! Also because of Car safety Month. The hospital I gave birth at did this as well. From our room, we watched 6 proud parents leave, hand baby to Mum in front seat, put capsule on maid's lap, put capsule sideways on front seat etcetec, not one person put it in the car properly. All the skills, knowledge and guidance by doctors, midwives, nurses to get that baby from embryo to newborn, down the drain if there was a simple accident.

[color=#000000'>[/color'>If you don't need the money straight away, you could 'buy' a cheque in American dollars whilst the Aussie is at parity and then wait till Aussie drops and then cash it in in Australia, or just take a wodge of cash with you now. At an investment seminar recently we were told that when Aussies are repatriating permanently they can take 300k home in cash - obviouly check this before you do it! Good Luck err, most cheques are only valid for 6 months from being issued, they then become 'stale' and unable to be banked let alone cashed. As the $ is likely to remain high for the forseeable, I wouldnt use that option. Do you mean some kind of USD bank bond? [color=#000000'>Yeah, I don't mean a normal cheque, sorry I should have been clearer. Yes, we just send home same amount each month as well for same reasons - averages about 76c.[/color'>edited by DesertBoot on 02/02/2011 edited by DesertBoot on 02/02/2011

Fear surrounds men hanging around parks and play areas; Emaar to launch ‘undercover’ security patrols By Shuchita Kapur Published Wednesday, February 02, 2011 If you live in the Springs and face a problem, Security Control can be contacted on +971 4 3089555 round the clock. (FILE) Another parent complained that one cleaner had the audacity of coming up to her to ask her if he could carry her two-and-a-half year old son. “I was walking around the lake with my husband and this cleaner comes up to me and said – ‘can I carry up your child’? I was disgusted and told him to keep away,” said this parent. http://www.emirates247.com/news/parents-in-the-springs-complain-of-oglers-and-strange-men-2011-02-02-1.350446 Yeah, because your average child abuser openly asks to play with your child. Why does the guy's occupation have to be mentioned? Gee, the other day a billionaire CEO of a large local business stroked my daughter's cheek (without asking). I was not disgusted and I did not tell him to keep away, much the same as if anyone asked me to touch or speak with my child - I might even (shock horror) put myself in their shoes and think that maybe they haven't seen their own kid for 3 years, because they have been busy making sure I can live in my sanitised bubble picking up the cr%p that my children leave around. Rant over

My husband freaks out about this, but I figure that all of us were babies once, no matter what religion, culture, country we are from. I refuse to feed a baby in toilets or change rooms - such a germophobe, I hate changing nappies in the change room! Yeah, just do it subtly and use the strategies other have suggested. I breastfed leaning over the carseat on the Oman -UAE highway as we couldn't pull over safely - I think there is still a very traumatised Pakistani truck driver walking around in a daze somewhere......
