I may be wrong but I thought that if you are sponsored by your husband and he changes jobs then you are able to pay a refundable deposit (of around 5k) to remain on your same visa and the money is then refunded when your husband has his new visa and goes in with all the paperwork. I heard this mentioned last year when my husband was moving jobs, we decided not to bother exploring it as I was due a new visa fairly soon anyway.

I've been trying for 2 weeks to get DEWA transferred into my name! Thanks to the 'new rules' of needing title deeds and the land dept insisting that the documents they were giving we're correct for DEWA, DEWA then not accepting said documents, finally getting the correct one, getting sent away by DEWA because it isn't stamped, 2 apartment owners but only one name on tenancy contract so have had to have that reproduced etc etc - I am just so glad that we have an overlap with our current apartment or we would have been living without AC and water for the past 2 weeks! Still not sure whether the end is in sight.....

Thank you ladies. I looked at a couple of Eman's tutorials but i have a question. Is the foundation placed before or after the eye shadow? she put it after. It should be after because then any bits of eyeshadow that drop onto your cheeks will be removed.

We are moving out of our apartment in a month, we pay 75k but I don't know how much they will be charging this year because we have been here for 3 years. We have 2 bedrooms and an amazing sea view. However the negatIves are that the building only has a small pool (ok for a dip but not for swimming) and also they are a bit slack with cleaning the windows! Also no gym, no storage (as in no wardrobes or maids room) and the balcony is off the bedroom rather than main room which is a bit strange. And no oven which is also very strange, just a hob. However as bad as all that sounds it is a nice apartment, fairly spacious living area, 2 bathrooms (showers only no bath) and the bathrooms and kitchen are pretty nice, also it is only a small building so no scary high rise! The building is owned by one landlord and they don't seem to advertise on property finder but their website is below if you wanted to check it out. I would definitely recommend it if you could manage without a gym and oven - its amazing how well you can adapt to no oven although I can't wait to have one again when we move after 3 years without! http://www.arabianhomes.org/estate/content.asp?edit_id=about_us

It is right opposite our building - it is the cabins on the building site that have been on fire, it was quite big at one point but is out now, there are still a lot of blue flashing lights out there but I think they are just keeping the area patrolled for now. I cant speak for whether anyone was injured though, hope not. The workers arrive on buses each day so if anyone was staying in the cabins then hopefully it will only have been one or two people and they will have got out safely. Not sure what started it, we only spotted it when it was quite big.

Thanks genie and no I guess I shouldn't base mine on 50 per month or I would be forking out 1800 for each of for the 3 years :) I just want to thank them because we have a lot of friends staying over from Abu Dhabi and they are very good with letting people in if I ask them to or receiving deliveries for us. Ha Ha - your calculation has nearly made me rethink my tipping strategy :) But no I will still do it as they also do the things you want to tip for. I am sure any tip you give will be very much appreciated as they earn so little money. Exactly, I am sure they don't earn much and you value the help they give you and think it is worth what you give them so everyone's happy! And imagine how your service would go downhill if you cut their tips :)

I give both the security men in our building money every month, I just make sure no-one is around when I do so that they can accept it as I am not sure if they are allowed tips or not. Do you mind sharing how much you give them Genie? If you would rather not then I understand, I just have no idea, I would probably give 10 dirhams if was tipping for a small bit of help but if I want to give our current security man something when we move out I have no idea - 500? After 3 years not sure if that is much!

Some building management companies are very strict. I have always been able to tip anyone who helps me with bags etc in most buildings but not in Emaar bdgs. The security guy said he would get into trouble if he accepted. Thanks, I guess we just have to try it and see what they say, maybe we can get around it by giving them little food gifts occasionally! It is a shame not to be able to because they are usually so friendly and helpful, ours even lent me 10 dirhams one morning when I was struggling to get a taxi who would take me with a 100 dirham note!

Usually book with Mark Warner to get the childcare option so we can also ski alone sometimes whilst kids are being entertained!, just wanted to check if any other options or similar companies that offer the same, probably France or Austria in January but other locations considered. Also trying to keep costs down too - difficult with ski holidays ! thanks anyone ;) We usually go to val d'isere - it is not very cheap so am not suggesting it for keeping costs down but there they seem to have kids ski schools so you can go off for a couple of hours to ski, maybe other resorts have it too, however I don't have kids so maybe this isn't the kind of thing you were meaning!

There were so many half price boot camp offers this time last year. Now I cant find anything for JBR thats under 900 dhs... which is still good but I'd be happy if I could find a deal :D Original fitness charge 450 per month - they advertise 900 but seem to have a permanent 'offer' of 50% off, they are great as well. Contact them to check but I have always known them to be 450.

I have an iPad 3 and was also worried about the temperature issue before I got it but if you go into a shop where one has been switched on all day you can feel that they are not very hot. I haven't noticed any issues with mine and I sometimes use it for a couple of hours at a time. I also haven't had any battery issues, it takes a while to charge but I suppose that is normal, it doesn't run down quickly. I can't compare to the iPad 2 as this is the first one I have had but I am happy with it.

After a probation period I would only discuss a raise if it had been discussed initially - such as if there had been a discussion at offer stage that they were aware that the salary was low and this would be revisited upon successful completion of probation period. 3 months is still very new in a job and I would be doing everything possible to be keen and an 'easy' employee. You say you need to negotiate for a 2 year contract, not sure what you mean by this - did you not sign a contract when you started which would apply on successful completion of probation? If I was happy in the job I would personally work very hard, prove myself invaluable and maybe discuss 6-9 months in. And it is very common for people to not want to talk about salaries, it is a private matter and employers don't take kindly to their employees discussing their salaries, often people will earn different figures to their colleagues for all sorts of bizarre reasons due to lack of rules in Dubai - this is not right but unfortunately it happens.

JPS1 You do not state if A) you have family/support network where you are at present. B) can stay where you are or relocate within the country you are in to have the baby. With out hesitation i would not be getting on a plane to come here at this stage, far too late, stay where you are have the baby and then fly and sort things out. Yes you can have emergency treatment but you could be billed heavily if there were issues post the emergency that need treatment. I'm talking hundreds of thousands worst case. You have no support network here, who is going to look after your twins?? Really step back and don't rush here when things are so messy. You must have medical insurance to have a baby here and not be liable or have worries and you will not be able to get than now. You also may have terrible problems registering the birth or your child if your papperwork is not legal. Hi there, thanks for your reply it is all overwhelming. We are in the UK but from NZ. I have support network here but no family. We could stay here. There are new tenants moving in to our house the date we have our flights booked and have sold our car and my husband has resigned from his job (Although it is a transfer within the same company). When you say I will not be able to get medical insurance are you meaning because how far along I am in the pregnancy? The company will provide the insurance and we were told there wouldn't be a problem with it but who knows what to believe. I did wonder how long it would take to kick in from when we arrive. "You also may have terrible problems registering the birth or your child if your papperwork is not legal" Can you explain this to me. Obviously we are going to do everything legally. I am not sure how this works though? Thanks again x With the medical insurance 'time period' - the majority of medical insurance policies which cover maternity do not allow you to make a maternity related claim within the first few months of the policy, I have recently researched this and only found one which allowed you to claim immediately, one even had a 2 year wait. And also medical insurance provided by companies in Dubai does not have to cover maternity by law (unlike Abu Dhabi) so be sure that yours does and that you are able to make claims immediately.

I recently went to Dr Yamini at a clinic in Knowledge Village - I think it was Welcare, the cost was between 700 and 800, I can't remember exactly - that was because I had to pay for a consultation plus the cost of the test. It was a very good experience, nice clinic, lovely staff.

I really struggle with this, my husband and I can never think of anything to do that doesn't involve eating, drinking or going to the cinema. And don't get me wrong, I am very happy to spend my time eating and drinking but it's not great for the diet! We do exercise but I definitely wouldn't count it as fun! We do dive fairly often but only on average one weekend a month as it gets too expensive! edited by dibdab on 04/07/2012

Also check that they are working days and not weekends included. i.e. If you want to take 2 weeks holiday you only use up 10 days and not 12 days (Fri & Sat in-between) Calendar days will imply the latter, won't it? Yes it does, calendar days means that weekends are counted also, 30 calendar days as part of a package is pretty normal and most companies here aren't overly generous with holidays so I wouldn't expect to get any more - so ad advice to the OP I would say that there would be no need to push for more, he isn't being short changed with 30 calendar days.

We live in a 2 bed apartment, in the winter we don't have the AC on at all and our bills were just under 200 per month but we don't pay housing fee so that would add extra on. Last month our bill was 540 because we had one AC unit going constantly.

I have just taken out a policy because my insurance (through my husband) doesn't cover maternity - unfortunately it is not a compulsory requirement in Dubai like it is in Abu Dhabi. I have gone for BUPA which is a 10 month waiting period for the maternity benefits. I have arranged it through Darren at Pacific Prime after doing a search on here and seeing a recommendation, his number is +971 (0) 43 686 161 ext. 110 and he gave me quite a few options with different companies (some cheap, some expensive depending on level of cover) and some good advice.

We have never paid deposits either - and I definitely know this because when we first arrived my husband's company did not assist with my visa and we had to sort it ourselves and we didn't have 5k that we would have been able to pay, I would have had a heart attack! Has anyone had experience of getting a new visa under these rules? A friend is moving here soon with her boyfriend and I wonder whether I need to warn her of the rules? She will be so worried if I tell her so I only want to tell her if it is actually happening! No idea what she will do, they are not really ready to get married just yet!

My husband and I are thinking of trying to start a family in around a year, my current medical insurance does not cover maternity and I don't want to look at 'topping it up' because I don't want my employer to know. I am starting to look at insurance now because of the 1 year minimum that the policies have before you are entitled to maternity benefits. So I am just wondering which insurance company offers good maternity cover within the health insurance? I have had a quick look and they don't all seem to cover all hospitals, procedures etc and I have no idea at this stage about which hospitals are good/bad for maternity, what level of cover would be needed etc. I got a quote from BUPA which is obviously very expensive although cover sounds amazing, however I don't need 5 star international cover - UAE cover will be fine but I don't want to find closer to the time that I can only go to a hospital with a bad reputation or whatever. Any advice appreciated, it's a minefield! edited by dibdab on 11/06/2012

You have said you can afford it and I would say that a 2 week holiday with your family is worth every penny. This is the reason you work so that you can enjoy precious family time together. That is just my opinion though! However seeing as you have already discussed with him and he has said no I am not sure what I would do because it may seem like going behind his back. Is there any other reason he doesn't want to go? No just the cash....he would love to come and I can tell he is resentful he's not coming. I love him but he drives me mad sometimes. I'm more live and let live (with some planning) but he's a worrier. I am the same as you - money is for spending and I have come to the conclusion we will never have enormous pots of savings because I would much rather enjoy myself! However I do not yet have children so I am sure that I would feel differently then and want to ensure they have a safety net for their future. But if you have a savings plan in place to look after your kids then you may as well spend the leftovers :)

DIFC visa renewals have started applying this new rule. Our employees are furious I really don't see how they can be furious.......... Everyone who is law abiding will have their tenancy agreement wont they? Er no they won't? For example our tenancy is in my name, because my company gave me the rent loan, and Dubai doesn't "do" joint tenancy. So my husband has no property rental in his name. Even if it was vice versa it would leave me without a property in my name, and as I'm on a company visa I don't know how much it matters that we're married. Maybe it is dependent on the landlord because our tenancy agreement is in both of our names.

Emaar will cover the chiller charges only. Not the electricity. Electricity is still consumed to run the AC in your apartment, even with district cooling. So, when you are using it you will still be paying for the electricity. My last apartment has AC included. My winter DEWA bills were 150-200dhs, my Summer DEWA bills were 300-350dhs. It is still saving you a lot of money to have your chiller for free. I pay upwards of 1000dhs per month for cooling and I don't even have it on very much. Thanks Plain-Jane - that seems to make sense! Looks like I needed to have it spelled out for me, just wanted to be sure that I understand what it is on about so I know whether it is a good deal or not so much.

MoYou will only pay DEWA which is pretty minimal. For a 1 bed, about 150 - 300dhs per month. Thanks - and sorry for continuing the stupid questions - so for example our DEWA bills are currently much higher in the summer than in the winter because AC is on constantly - if AC is included then DEWA bills remain the same throughout the year?

They seem to be the only ones within budget - she said that it is the furthest away from the entrance and due to the road systems it ends up being a long distance and also Al Reem is generally not that great, not sure exactly what she meant by that though!

Wow, very scary. Our fire alarm goes off often and therefore we always end up giving it a bit of time before we leave the apartment because 99.9% of the time it is investigated quickly by security and the alarm is switched off - quite worrying really if it was an actual fire but there are soooo many false alarms that we don't want to run down loads of flights of stairs every time it happens - at least twice a week. And usually when it does go off for a long time and we go down there is hardly anyone else there so most people must just stay put no matter what! Hard to know the best thing to do when the alarm goes off so frequently. Very happy to hear that everyone in Sulafa Tower is safe.

Dewa is expensive as you need to add the villa surcharge to your bill. We no longer have any grass and that made our bills drop drastically. Gardeners vary in price and in quality. I think the average is about 300 a month?? We really love living here! Thanks for the info! What is a villa surcharge for DEWA? Have heard of housing fees but not this.

I am sure there are some 3 and 4 bedroom villas in JVC/JVT. I have a friend who had looked at some. There are definitely some in JVC but it just seems to be getting a bit too far away - even though next to JVT it is across Al Khail Road - if there are 3 beds in JVT that would be great, I will keep looking. It is a shame about JVT because the villas are huge and they could definitely have made them into 3 beds instead of 2! Is there nowhere you could put up a temporary wall to turn them into a 3 bedroom? No unfortunately not because the bit that I think would have made a great third bedroom is actually an outdoor upstairs terrace which is a bit of a pointless space when they have such enormous gardens :(

Oh my goodness (in a mad panic) I don't have time for a mani pedi before going away for the weekend (totally forgetting that it is actually possible to paint one's own nails!?) Similar panic happens when hubby has no shirts ironed for work, the maid isn't due for 2 days and the laundrette is closed for the day. Yes it is too much hot outside (when speaking to those who do not have English as first language)

We will be moving this year when our tenancy agreement expires at the end of August - we were planning to go on holiday during Eid week and move earlier in Aug, however it has only just occurred to me for some reason that it would mean sorting everything out during Ramadan. Has anyone done this and found it OK or would it be likely to be a complete nightmare? I really want to go away for Eid and take advantage of the days off work seeing as we don't get too many days off but am thinking it may be a stupid idea in case looking for something during Ramadan is impossible!

Landlord. Thats why you pay deposit. If the tenant leaves it in good condition, deposit is returned. If its in bad condition the deposit is not returned and used to fix whatever needs fixing. So they are allowed to take the cost of repainting out of the deposit? It is just normal wear and tear and not that we have painted anything a different colour or put up wallpaper. How annoying that we have to pay to paint our house at home for our tenants and then we have to pay to paint our home here for our landlord! Double whammy - the same as agency fees I guess :(

Depends what's written in your contract. I've always gone by the 'leave it as you found it' philosophy. If it wasn't all painted when you moved in, then don't bother when you move out. It doesn't specifically mention decorating but says it has to be 'returned to its original state'. I guess if I have to decorate then I should also ship in an inch of building dust to add to each room and inside cupboards because that was also how we found it! :)

I am not sure why, I don't think it is jealousy because these people really seem to hate the idea of the place - Dubai does get very bad coverage in the British press and people who have not been here therefore only have that to go on. And to be fair, much of what they say is true (tacky, dodgy development, people flashing the cash) but then because they have never been here they don't get to see the good things too. I am also careful what I post on facebook because I know many people who are having hard times in the UK and probably don't want to be faced with pictures of me drinking champagne at brunch or spending days on the beach - even though these things happen only very occasionally and not every weekend as people at home would believe! But then despite us 'apparently' having such an amazing jet set lifestyle there are many things that they have that we miss out on such as having their families close to them and nice British sensibilities!
