We had the same problem. Went to DEWA HQ, waited for half an hour in the queue just to be told they cannot amend the housing fee - must be done at the Dubai Municipality. Don't waste your time by going to DEWA :)

The Reclining Buddha is a must, I think. The Royal Palace is nice. And I absolutely love the Chatuchak market (maybe you can go there without kids?). On the entrance get a map so you don't get lost. I love the part for the house and clothes. Be aware that tuk tuk drivers like to take you to places where they can get a stamp for petrol - usually the jewelery or tailor shops. just tell them you want to go there and there Straight. no stops etc. always cut the price by half, too. Enjoy!

We have done such a trip with my DH. We started in Milan and finished in Florence. I suggest you get a guide for Italy or Tuscany and read it, deciding on which towns you would be interested in visiting. We wanted to visit couple of big towns like Florence, Pisa, Genoa, Siena, and some small places. We had an Italy guide from DK, called Eyewitness Travel. My favourites include Chinque Terre (it is in Liguria, you can stay in one of the towns, or in La Spezia, as we did, and take a train to Chinque Terre), also Portofino (you can leave your car in Santa Margherita Ligure and take a bus there) and Portovenere, Luca is also a nice medieval town. We had booked only the hotel rooms for the night we arrived to Italy and the last night before we left so we were sure we had where to stay, but the rest we just drove and decided on the way if we wanted to spend a night in a specific place (like Luca - we never planned to stay there but it was a very cute small town, and we stayed in an amazing hotel with paintings dating 15th century). As Nicedaynat mentioned, we used the Agriturismo villas. You will see the signs everywhere you drive, some of them are simple houses with couple of rooms the owners let and they make you the breakfast with their local produce, others might be big estates with their own vineyard tours and big restaurtants the locals like to visit. Good luck! I wish we could do it again as it was one of the best trips I have ever done :)

You are right, there are lots of waves and strong currant around Black River and Tamarin. Around Grand Baie is more suitable for kids, but if you want to stay around South-West I would recommend Le Morne. Le Paradis hotel is one of the best, if not the best on the island. I have personally stayed there couple of times and always the experience was amazing.

Well I had to wait for 4 months for their reply, and they did it only when I'd posted on Twitter. I kept on sending emails to their support email every couple of weeks and nothing. I cannot even tell you how many times I'd tried the phone number provided on their website - always engaged. Finally, I found couple of mobile numbers on their Twitter account and nobody would pick up these either. I do hope that their service improves after all these complaints. It is so different to the service you get from Groupon UK and that's a real shame! I would still suggest you try posting on their Facebook or Twitter account so they know there are customers who are not fully satisfied with their service. Otherwise how can this business improve?? Good luck

All clothes are cheaper in the UK :) when the sale comes, the price goes down to UK prices.. Don't forget the perfume which is much more expensive here, also cosmetics. Or some brands you like might not be available here. I had some religious stuff packed, no problem at all. Good luck!

That's exactly what I thought LB....but most apartments are new in Dubai!? You never know what has happened while they were building it though... I agree with this... Why did this happen while the guest were around? After watching some scary movies I could only suggest that is has been triggered by the presence of a baby! Do some reading on the net about how to get rid of the unwanted spirits.

Why don't you get a friend come over and spend couple of days at your place? You will have company and it will not be that scary, also, see how it goes when somebody else is in the house. Get the pest control to check re rats. The dog & cats would definitely feel their presence even if you do not see/hear them. Also, they can be rather loud and noisy during night time. Did you gueat experience anything weird?

well well, easy to judge! imagine if you were Beyonce and had the fame and money she's got. Imagine all the chaos caused by the paparazzi and other freaks, plus the fans in the hospital, if it was officially announced and if she'd booked only a room or to for herself. I'm sure it would have been worse to everyone in the hospital. why should she give birth at home if she wanted to do it at the hospital? If something happened, they would still have to take her to the hospital - your comments make no sense, SkyKitty! Are you for real? Oh, boohoo, poor Beyonce, has to deal with paparazzi, fame and money. edited by Monkey Face on 09/01/2012 Of course! never said Poor Beyonce, however, it's her business and she can do as she wants. She wants to hire the whole floor - she does it. I would do the same if I had money she has. As Clairehdp and Shamat said, the hospital agreed about all this, so they are the ones to blame if there were some unfair restrictions.

The Beauty one is valid till March, all other books are valid till 30th Dec. If you tend to shop at Carre4 they have a deal now on some books, too. You pay 350 but get a voucher worth 50 to spend in store - makes it cheaper than 10% discount. Arrrr.. I just got mine delivered, which was annoying! Ah well ;) Same here! ;)

We often go to Rosso, the bar with the terrace. Love the set up, they have the happy hour 6-9pm, the food is good, the service might be tiny bit slow but the staff is nice and helpful! Benihana - been twice, once had tepaniyaki, once sushi. Both were nice, however, the tepaniyaki chefs have the same scenario to speak while they are preparing your food, so we could hear the other chef telling his table exactly same words as our chef told us 3mins ago. oh, and his jokes about bananas & men are very hmm interesting ;) otherwise it was fine.

I have found that 2 large pitchers and a funnel that fits into the neck of a wine bottle give the best result. Pour the wine into one pitcher and then back and forth between the 2 pitchers about 20 times and then pour back in the wine bottle using the funnel and serve. I recommend doing this over a sink and wearing an apron in case there are any splashes. Enjoy. ...and you are left with half of the bottle in the end!;) want the aerator as a gift for my DH, two pitchers will not be appreciated, I'm afraid :)

Or tell him that IF he wants access to YOUR home then he needs to offer you a refund on the rent. I like the idea, however, is that legal?:) I wouldn't mind him paying for the cleaning of the flat! last week I was so disgusted to find black hair everywhere in the apartment after one of the visits (yuck yuck!)

That's what I thought...but my DH doesn't agree with me and tells me to stay quiet when they come because one of them will be the new landlord! I thought about RERA but I am doubting sligtly...just hard to explain - would they listen to me? I mean, we still have our flat, and we will have it till the end of the agreement, however, I feel kind of cheated that it all has started 1.5/2months into our rent. I am sure they wanted first to rent it out to look more appealing to the buyers :( but makes me feel uncomfortable in my own house!

Could it be water or juice then? I couple of times got badly sick from freshly made juice while travelling... was only me, none of my family members, despite having the same juice.

Look into what you are eating. Maybe there is something you started eating only in Dubai which upsets your stomach. Do you wash veg & fruit well? Try to do a food diary for couple of weeks, marking the days when you get sick, and look into it.. it could be simple things like milk/cream/yogurt/cheese? Try swapping the brands. If you tend to eat out, write down the restaurant names as well in the diary as it might have something to do with your sickness.

Thanks ladies, I shall check C&B. I've checked on Amazon, the brand I'm looking for is called Vinturi, it has got really good reviews, so was just wondering if anybody got it in Dubai by any chance. The ones I found on Amazon do not deliver to UAE.

The apparently super duper 'dr. dre beats' headphones My 12yo DD has asked for these. She was on track to get them until I saw the price! She's just revised her list today (now presents have all been bought and wrapped) and added a Macbook Air. Mwahahahahahaha! wow, those kids want a lot nowadays! Barbie used to be on the top of my list! hahahah and I never even got it! had to earn during summer for it!

I knew the story of Baby Jesus being born, the importance of Xmas Eve and Xmas as a religious celebration. Then, Father Xmas was there too - to bring Xmas gifts :) Never questioned parents about religious things (it was kinda obvious), but always questioned them how that old Santa managed to get into our house!

How about the start up costs? Most of the places here come unfurnished. Even if he or she buys things on Dubizzle they will still need to arrange the transportation, when the costs add up it will be a cost which they won't be able to cover with their monthly salary. As driving a car is part of the job, you should consider adding it on top of 8k. As it stands now, 8k wouldn't tempt a westerner. You need to give some extras. How about offering something for relocation, so they can at least pay for the rent the first month and get some furniture? Most of the people relocating to Dubai get the accommodation covered by their company, at least for the firt couple of months, now imagine this person coming here having to pay for absolutely everything on his/her own. It seems like they will have to come with good savings to be able to start life here (flight ticket, rent, furniture, food, etc)

Let the guy take care of himself. You have not even met him and want to drive him around and pay for him. Let him do it. You are not a couple, are you? If you are going out somewhere you may pick him up, not a big deal. But you should not pay for him. The best is to split equally. If he takes you on a date, then let him pay. And let him choose a place, too. But if you guys are just going out as friends when he arrives, he won't know what places are good/bad so there is nothing wrong if you suggest a GOOD place to go. You should help him by giving advice but not by doing search for him. You are not his girlfriend, you are not his mum. He has to do everything on his own. Rent/buy a car, find and rent and apartment and so on. You can only give him advice on how things are done over here, where to get ID, how to activate DEWA and so on. I am sure he is an independent person and can do things, too!
