The payment of school fees allows both employees to be in the same position, financially. If the non-child employee starts getting extra money, the two employees are no longer in the same financial position. The one without children will be in a far more fiscally happy position than the other family. At this time, yourself and the other employee are equal. He/she is not getting MORE than you, the company is simply providing the security you'd get in another country for free in a public school. By giving one money for school and the other money simply because, the staff are no longer equal. I understand exactly what you are saying but just because you don't have school going children doesn't mean you don't have other commitments. The other employee could have children that are attending universities as they are over 18. You have flights to pay for, accommodation for them etc etc. How is that classing someone in the same position ? University is not mandatory though. This is one reason most companies have started to pay an all inclusive salary and left the expat package in the past. Too much debate among employers what is fair and not. There are plenty of companies that don't do packages, maybe your husband would be happier in one of those. University is not mandatory BUT neither is having children. It's a choice that is made so why should a person who made the decision to have children (and who knew the costs associated with that decision) have a bigger benefits package than someone who chose not to have children? I'm now going to run and hide...

I had good luck last winter with: limes, tangerines, butter lettuce, rocket, tomato, capsicum, mint, oregano, chives, parsley, basil & rosemary. Tried capers and spring onions with no luck...maybe this year.

No-from the U.S. It will be 110V vs the 220V needed here. You will have to plug it into a transformer....

Well that is a stroke of luck! I had my cervical spine fused 16 months ago and also have spinal stenosis in my low back. Pain in my low back has gotten significantly worse over the last three weeks....to the point where I finally booked to see an osteopath. I see Dr Malcolm Gregory this afternoon, happy to hear others have had success with him!

Thanks everyone, it was a last ditch effort to see if anything was possible. We left the issuing country a year ago and are still trying to get our car insurance refund! It took them 4 months to mail us the check and then our bank returned it once because we didn't say we would pay the international fee when we sent them the check...by the time we sent it back to our bank the issuing bank refused to cash it because the check was more than 6 months old. Sigh, trying to get a new check issued now - I so wish we could have it sent wire transfer but it's not possible from the country of origin. Hopefully this time around it works smoothly with our home bank!

I believe you may be able to rent a car while you wait....depending on where your current drivers license is from. But you can't register and drive your own car without the UAE license & UAE ID.

Lisylou - thank you! I found it at the Park-n-Shop on Al Wasl today. Cherpie - yes, in the white bottle. Safestway used to have a few of the flavors but now have none :(

It's an all natural creamer - milk, sugar, cream and natural flavoring (for example organic certified vanilla from Madagascar). I just prefer creamer without the gobs and gobs of preservatives.

septembermama - I did just walk into Black Tulip and ask to purchase direct. They asked if I wanted an arrangement and when I said no, just the stems they directed me to the back where a man met me and took me into the chiller. I simply wanted some peonies because they are sentimental to me but they kept asking me if I wanted other flowers too. I paid 200AED for 10 stems - on their website they have 12 peony stems in a simple vase for 1730AED! I found this online about the Flower Centre so I'll definitely give them a try next time "Dubai Flower Centre can also be a one stop destination for travelers and tourist interested in buying flowers for their loved ones. Everything here is well wrapped and covered in a presentable manner. Among the well known companies in Dubai Flower Centre are Allisar flowers, Shirin flowers and Ceylinco Foliage Export Ltd just to mention a few."

We live in Umm Suqeim 3 just behind Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Absolutely love the area but it can get kind of crazy at the beach at times. A lot of tour companies seem to bus in people to take photos of the Burj Al Arab from the Public Beach :(

Thanks ladies! I was in Sharjah so stopped at the Black Tulip warehouse and they were kind enough to take me to the chillers and pick out exactly what I wanted. To just take the stems was a very, very reasonable price. I've written down these two spots for the future.

I got some Bob's Red Mill cornmeal yesterday at Lulu Barsha, it was in a weird spot and now I can't remember where. I've also seen swiffer products at both Safestway and Ace Hardware.

Do. Not. Do. It! It will end up being more expensive in the end as they tack on fees for everything: checked bag fee, carryon bag fee, boarding pass printing fee, need seats together...pay a fee. On top of all that, they are never on-time, the seats are ridiculous and they are plain 'ol rude. It's just so not worth it.

OceanView - if you are from Australia aren't your appliances 220-240V? They will all work here without a transformer, you'll just need the plug adapters which are just a few dollars each. If they aren't Australian electronics then just look at the back of the power supply and see what the voltage range is. Dual voltage items will say 110-240V and you those are ok here with just the plug adapter. If it says 110-120V that means you'll need the transformers and I'd leave those behind.

We brought our 13+ year old dog with us from the states this year - it was a 8 hour flight from DC to Frankfurt, a 5 hour break there at Lufthansa's pet facility and then 5 hours into Dubai. He did great, no issues but he absolutely loved his crate so he was not stressed at all - I think that was the key.

Ocean view, yes! And you can't buy k-kips here so unless you have access to US mail (APO, DPO etc) leave the Keurig behind too!

Sisterescott - the voltage is different here. 90% of US electronics will need to go on a transformer to work here and I shudder to think the size transformer a washer and dryer will take! Your computers (but maybe not your printer) will be dual-voltage so will just need a plug adapter...brand new TVs are generally dual voltage but that's about it. Kitchen appliances (toasters, coffee makers, Keurigs, crock pots etc), hairdryers, DVD players, surround sound systems...will all need to be on a transformer which will drive up your electric bill. AND if your TVs don't work on PAL (vs the US NTSC system) you won't be able to have cable tv here without a converter box. You can bring lights as they just need a local lightbulb and plug adapter but I would seriously limit all other things you plug into the wall.

Why would you bring a US washer and dryer here...it would have to go on a transformer and a very large one at that which will add significantly to your electricity charges. And unless your TVs are brand new and work on PAL you either need to leave them behind or ship NTSC/PAL converter boxes too. Recommend you leave non dual-voltage electronics/appliances stateside!

Portland, OR is where the food truck craze started and is a cool city. An ideal trip would start in Seattle, WA and with a day trip to the San Juan Islands to see the Orcas, drive to Portland and down the coast of Oregon (must, must, must stop at Cannon Beach for a night) to northern CA. Stick to US 1 for the spectacular scenery, hit San Fran, Pebble Beach etc and go as far south as Big Sur.

There is a "To Let" sign on the end of our Villa row in Umm Suqeim 3...basically at the corner of Al Yazzi and Al Thanya. We have a 3 bedroom plus office and maids quarters but can't offer any help on price as we don't pay our rent.

I know for Americans who have a "no foreign transaction fee" US credit card it's better to select Dirhams. The exchange rate is 3.673 if you select Dirhams and 3.50 if you select Dollars.

Istanbul is one of my very favorite places. A boat trip up the Bosphorus, a tour of the Blue Mosque (easily the most beautiful thing I've ever seen), the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Souk. It's an amazing city and 8 years ago full of some of the friendliest people I've met.

RushingWater - which frozen section? I've tried Safestway twice (a month ago and today) and have never found them. I asked one of the employees today and he said they don't have them. If I can narrow my search to a particular section I might pop in a few more times and see if I ever hit the jackpot.

Does anyone have the Blu Shower Filter that replaces the shower head (vs the cartridge that goes under the faucet)? Before I spend 350AED I want to make sure there will still be good water pressure...I have really thick hair and it can be a chore to get shampoo/conditioner out of it.
