Certain times of the day Al Wasl was always an absolute nightmare !! Not so much so since they started the works...I guess the amount of traffic lights on Beach Road is to allow people to get across it without having to walk miles... Will be interesting that's for sure !!

Yes, my friend was run off the road several years ago by the bandits but he refused to stop...they didn't bother chasing him. The place has a licence to sell alcohol in a different Emirate - it's not up to them where you take it or where you live so "it's not legal for Dubai residents to transport it" doesn't matter to them. Fact remains, you are driving a car full of booze through a dry Emirate even though your licence allows you to transport it to your home !! As a side note - I've heard that you can actually get an alcohol licence in Sharjah so I don't know how that works !! lol

It's illegal to share maids and you have no recourse with the Police when they steal something so that is not a good idea. Yikes! Thanks a lot for letting me know this.... There is an agency that offers maids to be shared between neighbours - all legal and above board..search facebook for Housekeeping Institute

Not all 8 year olds have IPads or games consoles - mine didn't. I would ask the parents for suggestions, there may be something special he's collecting or go for a voucher and something small to wrap up like a football (good luck with that !! lol) or an annual type book..I think they like Guinness World Records books for all the gross ones lol

In the UK I've had my jacket stolen from a club cloakroom (Police told me if I saw someone wearing it I was to apprehend them !! lol), several lots of washing stolen from the clothes line, mainly underwear and when Police recovered some I was asked to identify it and take it home (no thanks !!), our car was written off parked outside our flat in the early hours by a drunk truck driver, my husband had his car radio stolen, my son had his motor bike stolen and it was recovered having been joy ridden and trashed, my buggy was stolen from outside my gate as I nipped back indoors to fetch the baby, our wheely bin was stolen but returned 3 weeks later !! lol, our house was burgled, I had my handbag taken from between my baby's legs as he sat in the trolley waiting for me to finish unloading the shopping into the boot and one time the bloke organising the work's Christmas club stole the money so we all lost our year's worth of savings !!...I'm not superstitious but I think we must have broken two or three mirrors in our lifetime !! lol In Dubai my son had his bike stolen from a friend's but it turned out to be their next door's maid thinking he'd thrown it out.... And we've had a couple of questionable traffic fines. Actually, the UK list looks bad but most of our crimes have been petty theft, I haven't ever been subjected to any violet crimes at all.

Yes I feel safe here and as Blue said, in some ways safer than I do in the UK. We live in a gated community and our school won't let anyone in without a pass. Most schools have the same rules - when we play sport at other schools we have to sign in and there is a security man present at all times. Unfortunately with the present situation around the world security is an issue for everyone - I don't feel any less safe here than I would anywhere else.

Not scaremongering - there have been numerous discussions on here over the years about disastrous pool parties, the milkman, activities between the s3xes and general teen issues...I know of one case in particular that my son told me about where I would have been certain the family concerned would have been deported but they weren't so maybe the warning tales of extreme repercussions are exaggerated..Drugs and smoking in school is an issue - search for dokha.. Having said all that, my son did very well at school here and is currently in university, an outcome that would never have happened had we stayed in his crummy comprehensive back home. Just don't google Daily Mail and Dubai teenagers !!

Dubai is THE best place to bring kids up - I wish mine were tiny again !! lol Masses of things going on for mums and tots - soft play, parks, events..lots of communities have lakes, swimming pools, play parks etc so you will still be able to walk with the buggy maybe even to the shop although that's not so common, depending where you live. People are very friendly here and love children - all the malls have things to do for them.. Before you arrive get yourself set up with other mum friends through facebook groups, expat forums (not just this one) and other airline wives' groups - there are loads. EW run coffee mornings for mums with tots and other events... But yes, there are lots of green spaces and walking opportunities although you will find a car much easier than lugging a car seat around for taxis.. Life here is very much what you make it and if you come expecting to be lonely and miserable then you will be !! Good luck :)

The traffic on and off the Palm is fine, some people that you couldn't pay to live there, probably couldn't really afford it anyway, so wouldn't pay attention to those comments. The main problem with the Palm is the construction and with that come noise! JBR has some of the worst traffic problems in Dubai and I can't see it getting sorted out like ever! The Marina is lovely though and there is a tram that will take you to the beach. I would choose an apartment on the Marina Mall side. Mall of the Emirates only 15 min away when little traffic. miaowww !! lol Clearly the traffic on and off the Palm is subjective - all I'll say is make sure you don't miss your block !! (many times we've arrived at friends via the scenic route).. And obviously key times such as rush hour or any major events at Atlantis etc will be murder...

JBR's a nightmare for traffic and the worst place to find a taxi. The Palm is gorgeous once you're there but one road on and off - no thanks. Also lots of landlord issues... Jumeirah 3 is probably easiest, transport wise but I would imagine taxis become tiresome when you rely on them all the time.

The reality of actually living here is that due to a number of factors, not least shonky landlords, unreliable employment and neighbourhood issues, it's common for people to make several house moves even over a short period of just a few years..

Thank you for your kind offer Stix, I'll be sure to ask if I think of anything else. Oh yes, I am wondering what has made you so dismissive and so judgemental and hard towards someone you have never met? Difficult childhood? PMT? I'm I do think amusement funded by unpleasantness says more about the author than the target of the aggression. I am sure your studio flat is lovely brie03. A long time ago I had a charming little bedsit in London and have very happy memories of my time there. Then I got married and had children and we had to move to larger accommodation. Then we had more children (we were never bored on a cold, winter night) and the house had to be expanded. We still need a large house when we move to Dubai, not because we are smug, poncy or flaunting our wealth but to fit our prodigy in. We have six children and they need to be accommodated two of them with their partners. We need space for friends to come and stay too and we are a bit beyond squashing into a single bed or using a blow up mattress. It's not about lowliness but about space. It may surprise you to know we probably won't have a maid - certainly not a live in one. I cannot justify working only three days and having someone clear up my mess for a pittance. Again not a judgement on those that do - I had nannies when the children were younger - but we don't really need someone now. Blue413 Control freak is not something I am usually accused of. Sometimes I just get on a bus to see where it goes (that is a lie, actually). I don't very often use buses as the nearest stop is seven miles away and the bus only goes twice a week. I am not sure it is kind to make sweeping assumptions based on a few questions. The fact younarrivedvwith three suitcases and a couple of school places is a) irrelevant and b) of dubious accuracy. How did you get visas without a job? Did you wander around on a donkey knocking at doors and being asked to taken in? Did you find somewhere that accepted your native currency? Did you not have health insurance for your children? Imsuspect if you take your blinkers off you may remember you did actually plan a little better than you suggest! Just for Nordique and Lady Mary :)

You obviously didn't see the personal insults on the other thread !! These days we tend to watch the Vicar of Dibley Christmas Special on the TV rather than live it in our own village but yes, Christmas here is essentially the same as our Christmas at home. The churches offer Christmas Eve mass although you won't be encouraged to bring booze - you can have plenty when you get home !! lol The schools put on plays and concerts and there are lots of choral and musical performances throughout December. There is a list of Santa's grottos as long as your arm and all the malls are decorated beautifully. Most of the stores are playing Christmas music already. I cook Christmas dinner the same as always and have no trouble getting nice fruit and veg plus delicious turkey etc. It can be a bit chilly so although a log fire won't be necessary I know lots of people who have electric heaters and blankets are a must !! Obviously you won't be watching the Queen at 3pm anymore - it will be 7pm by which time you will be well oiled !! lol Swimming I think will be reserved for only the most hardy amongst us - we never have!! But I can't think of anything we miss. With regard to insulting the hairdressing profession I felt that "something they had to do because they hadn't got the grades to reach their dream" was implying that hairdressers have poor grades which of course isn't true. And actually I've met many hairdressers for whom their chosen path is very much something they always dreamt of doing.... With your previously stated housing allowance you will have ample space to accommodate all your children and their friends so I'm not sure why you are asking....

"And my point is that guns do not kill people - people kill people." I agree. We try so much to shield our LOs from violence and hate. And I feel that it's important that we instill in them the values that will pretty much dictate how they will behave when we are not there. Sometimes when we cartoons, I'll' ask my sons "Do you think that's right?", "Do you think its okay to do that?", just to see how they react and correct them if needed. Guns DO kill people

Fair play to you Tessa - several weeks since I saw anything I could be bothered to log in for !! As someone else said, your initial posts (the ones that are left - I get the feeling this thread has undergone a severe pruning) seemed harmless enough - either a bored 12 year old school boy, embittered maid or someone who really has been considering a move, but the last few have revealed a disturbing nastiness. Yes it's possible someone rocked up here with two school places and 3 suitcases, I've met lots of ladies with similar stories. Way too many factual inaccuracies, I can't be bothered to be honest but I'm disappointed that your thread seems to have run its course - the snooty lady of the manor was mildly entertaining, if only to pick out the typos and errors but it's become something else now..what a shame...just ready for a TNT... We had someone a few years ago who plagued the forum with endless questions - even ended up making spreadsheets !! Yes really..but in real life it became clear she was also a control freak with an attitude not unlike yours...in fact, had she been British I might now be wondering...lol !!

Most of the plus points of moving back are for you and your husband - lifestyle, social life, climate, convenience...as far as your boys are concerned their UK life is better - close to grandparents, fab school, better weather to be able to play outside more, easier to make school friends, TV sports live (not recorded !! lol). Equally, most of the down points of life in the UK are for you and your husband..Can you make a go of it in the UK for the next 8 years ? It's a tough one..our eldest never really liked it in Dubai but unbelievably we never knew until after he left !! Our youngest on the other hand loves it and will be sorry to leave when the time comes..I think it depends on why you left - you won't have taken the decision lightly..if it was us and both our children really didn't want to move (bearing in mind that they have only just had a massive upheaval to leave) I think we would have to just grin and bear it..you can always come back after they're settled at uni...

Absolutely !! Our eldest was 17 when he learned in the UK over summer - took 6 weeks and passed with a clean sheet then got his UAE licence on his 18th Birthday. We were on AD visas so we got his licence there and he drove us home !! Already had his car waiting and I have to say it transformed his last year here and now he's back in the UK he's almost got rid of his Dubai habits !! lol We never worried any more than we would have anywhere else and if anything his reflex speeds are quicker than ours !! I'm sure it can only be a benefit - if you can drive here you can drive anywhere.

When was the last time this country lost so many young lives in war??? 54 all from same generation. Our national population is so small. This is a first for this country. They need to treat situation with respect as national service now mandatory. They are genuinely in grief and this is far more important than music on radio. It keeps being extended because there are more deaths, more families to visit. Sheikhs are still visiting families with lost sons and husbands. How they handle this is very important to future war efforts and families sending their children to fight. You are guests here. Stop complaining and get out of your bubble. [b'>[/b'> ?? This is a site for expats so we are all guests.. I don't think anyone is complaining, on the contrary this has been one of the most respectful threads I've seen here, it's just that some people were wondering why the mourning period was so much longer than initially announced.
