Hi Sara, it's usual to reply to this question by recommending EW coffee mornings but if you work full time that won't be an option for you.. Hopefully you'll be able to make some friends through work.. Facebook is great - if you search for groups covering where you live or general terms such as women/ladies/mums (if applicable)/expat/Dubai etc... And maybe after the summer EW could be persuaded to host some coffee mornings outside of working hours...

I think apartment living is an acquired taste especially if you have kids...can't beat having a garden to play in. Having said that I know a lot of apartments have huge balconies !! Personally though I would choose a villa every time just for practical reasons..Can't speak for the locations though Green Community is nearer the shops.

Hi we are also moving to dubai in sept. Personally I'm terrified I'm in my fifties no kids, they are all to be left in the uk! What do women do to fill their days I'm so[b'> worried I will be bored[/b'>. We are thinking of living in the downtown area as husband will commute to sharjah, have been told that it's nicer for ladies in dubai ? Help please I thought that too - I packed lots of books and magazines (i'd read on EW that they're expensive or hard to get here) and over 4 years later they're all still on the shelf untouched !! lol To be honest, between looking after the family and the villa, getting youngest son to school and school life in general, meeting friends for coffee and messing about on the internet, I don't get time to be bored !! I'll admit that having school age children makes a difference but most of my friends don't have children and they seem to be just as occupied... Lots of clubs and activities - check Facebook or websites for Time Out Dubai or What's On Dubai and search Facebook for women/ladies/Dubai/expat etc.... Also check for community facebook groups for Downtown.. There's also loads of info elsewhere on EW... Guarantee once you get here you'll wonder what you were worried about..

[ I don't think this forum is the right place for these kind of questions, as none of us here are qualified to give certain information on the issue. Best is to contact Dubai Courts or the Fatwa line and get accurate information. None of us are qualified for lots of questions that are asked and answered here. Why is this question any different? And since some posters advice OP to check with Dubai courts her question has been answered hasn't it? She now knows where to go, something she probably didn't know or had thought of before she posted. Crikey, if we were only allowed to answer questions we are qualified for, the forum would be mighty quiet !! lol

Clunk Click Every trip !! The only decent thing Jimmy Saville ever did in his life... I too was brought up travelling in cars with no seat belts but as soon as they were available we always used them (no "happy moments" ?! for me ...) As a child I remember travelling on my nan's lap in the back or sleeping during long trips up the M1 laid out on the back seat with a blanket and pillow....but times were different then - like smoking in those days, we didn't know any better. But we do now.

The size of vehicle many of us drive coupled with the tight parking spaces in most places unfortunately means this often happens...you see the way people drive around car parks here - total disregard for other vehicles around them... sorry, it must be heartbreaking to see it happen to a brand new car :( eta - my husband treated me to a full service on mine a couple of years ago for a surprise and they got out every single mark - even one that had looked impossible to hide..the car looked like new again... <em>edited by Doubting Thomas on 05/07/2014</em>

I stick my favourites on the wall. If you go to an art shop you can probably pick up an A1 folder thing that art students use to xarry their work..that's what I used in the UK, I'm sure you can get them in Dubai

No help to you Izzy but have you seen that video of how to separate the yolks using an empty plastic bottle ? you just crack the eggs into a bowl then place the neck of the bottle over each yolk, squeeze and watch it get sucked up into the bottle !! lol

Although the International Residential Code isn’t a binding legal definition, many housing codes use it as a guideline. Under IRC standards, the bedroom must be at least 70 square feet in size and at least 7 feet wide. Ceilings can’t be lower than 7 feet, 6 inches. Never drive on your UK license if you could use your UAE one instead Legally, you have no choice. Once you are no longer a permanent UK resident your UK licence becomes invalid and you *must* use your UAE one. Car hire companies are as clueless about this as many expats and will happily accept your UK licence, but if you are involved in an accident and it all goes pear-shaped, *you're* the one on the hook, not the car hire company. Bottom line - NEVER use your UK licence when hiring a car in the UK. And if you get caught for points they can't put then on your UAE licence !! lol

Very useful info, thanks, very timely, at home so many bedrooms are less than the minimum dimensions given here yet are counted as bedrooms, does this same rule apply in the UK? Yes, pretty much the same. As far as I recall, a habitable room has to have ventilation (normally provided by an openable window). Thus a box room with no window is unlikely to be able to be classed as a bedroom if it doesn't have suitable ventilation... There is a stand upstairs in Mercato near Monsoon which does the most beautiful arabic calligraphy on jewellery (cufflinks/necklaces etc). Good value too!! I bought a kenwood microwave there and it never worked...... and had other things (can't remember now as i banned myself from being electronics from there about 7 years ago) that broke soon after being bought.... The small C4 are the worst... need free diving lungs to go in there. So you haven't actually bought anything electrical for 7 years yet you still tell people not to buy from there !! lol yes..... i dont presume they would have got any better.... and it would appear by OP thread, they haven't. edited by IzzyOnTheSeat on 30/06/2014 Actually, OP's experience seems to be in the minority if you read the rest of the comments...

we've bought most of our white goods and electronics there - never had a problem !! But agree with Izzy - the smell in the dairy aisle is pretty rank although the rest of the store is usually ok..
