I understand now why facebook only has the "like" button despite years of requests for a "dislike". I think a thumbs up feature is quite good, a thumbs down feature (especially anonymous) is too negative, and seems to have invited a level of bitchy/retributional thumbs downing for innocuous comments based on poster, akin to cyber-bulling really (maybe EW should be renamed expatgirl as it seems to bring out the "tween" in some?) [b'>I would support removal of the thumbs down[/b'>. I think most of us would , to be honest.. Facebook thumbs will always be different because it isn't anonymous..

We've been happy at Safa for 4 years...We had an unhappy experience at Star some years ago but they have a different head now I believe...I think most people will say they're happy with whichever school they're at otherwise they wouldn't still be there.. Sorry I can't help - which one did you feel most comfortable with when you visited ?

We came here for 3 months almost 5 years ago !! lol But plans change... One of my kids has never really liked it here much and if it had become a big issue then we would probably have gone home but fortunately we didn't have to..so if you are unhappy here then maybe it's best if you go - sounds like you've already decided anyway, having an au pair and job offer lined up.. Personally, my place is with my husband, maybe that's old fashioned but if he has a successful job here and is happy with it then it's not fair of me to force him to move. For the first year mine was in Dubai on his own and I have to say that was more than enough time for us without him - I couldn't imagine how much harder it would have been for any longer than that...It was tough being a single parent, we all missed him so much, and kids need their dad.. You talk about him visiting once a month, but what kind of life is that going to leave him here, on his own ? It's a dilemma alright but to answer your question, if it was me I would stay and focus on whatever issues are making your life here difficult.. Sorry.

The thumbs down is anonymous, so I'm not so bothered by it TBH, its like FB, Daily Mail Online, etc... There will always be people who don't like or do like what I have to say, just life...I do enjoy being challenged and critised as I can learn something from it...It's part of a good and enjoyable debate... No doubt these features were added to stir up emotions... But when some posters get stirred up sufficiently they end up getting banned... The poster who said about the "Like" had it - for yonks everyone has been asking for a "like" feature like there is on Facebook, just a quick, easy way to show your appreciation for a post without having to log in (in itself a pain) and make a comment...so that's all they needed to do...but no...they gave us the thumbs like on you tube and various other sites..I think the demographic of EW is totally unsuited to a method of anonymously voting against a post/er... Maybe they could just dump the red thumbs and let us use the green ones in the same way we "like" posts on facebook...which was all we were wanting anyway...

well I think this thread is one of the worst ideas we've ever had on here.... sorry but if your spouse is that bad then divorce him fgs, other wise just suck it up - none of us are perfect and i'm sure there's loads of things I do that pee my husband off but at the end of the day we're happy.... I thought EW was supposed to be a place where women could share stuff and ask for advice, not slag their husbands off or gloat in the knowledge that at least their husband isn't as horrible as all the others......sorry. Recently I have become aware of how little people outside of advertising actually understand how advertising is successfully executed. On many FB groups people say no advertising, but then go on to allow it to happen under many guises. Even pet rescue ads are advertising a few companies in one pic. Any hoooo..... Sometimes it feels like the whole of Dubai is just one big advert...Everybody it seems has something to promote, something to sell, something to say... Must say I found the dog bite one a bit much - the photo of that animal care ad attached to the quote "Help my dog just bit the driver" under the heading What should you do if your dog has bitten someone ? Join the conversation here... Then a link to the thread...Seems to be trivialising what was a serious issue for the OP...

Dusha, I'm very sorry your friend is feeling unwell. I suspect she didn't expect the overwhelming response to be that her actions are not excusable and her company's actions are justified. Honestly, the thing to do now is own up to her actions and take responsibility rather than try and get rid of threads that condemn those actions. She made a mistake and needs to accept it. Hiding it by deleting the thread and feeling unwell feels like she's still in denial. We have all made mistakes that make our stomachs turn when we think of them. I know I have! It's how we face them, learn something and move forward that defines us. The way you can best help your friend is by talking through the responses to your original query, not by deleting it and hoping it just disappears. You are not doing her any favours by getting rid of dissenting opinions so she can justify her actions. I hope she works through things and finds a sort of 'peace' with it soon. edited by Catawba KSE on 01/05/2014 I agree with your point but I wonder if she wants it deleted because she is more identifiable now Surely she should have thought about that before posting it in the first place....and just because she deletes her posts in a sulk because she doesn't get the answer she wants, why should another poster have to edit their post ?

EW is a business and the forum is only a small part of the site but they use it to attract people.Posting "teasers" on Twitter and Facebook is just a way to increase the traffic.. Advertisers will only continue to use EW as long as people are talking about the place and it remains " the number one women's website"... Worth remembering that anything you post on here is viewable by anyone, not just members, as we've discovered in the past when posts have been quoted in newspapers. I've noticed that the FB page hasn't been getting as many comments as it used to..

OP, there are much, much cheaper nurseries in Dubai which would be much more economical for you. You would be best visiting some of them (check the Jaffaliya area of Dubai which has a lot of them, and all surrounding neighbourhoods, Jumeirah 1, Satwa, Karama etc) - you will find much cheaper nurseries which open all day, all year, and which also offer transport at vastly reduced costs to those quoted on this thread. Mostly everything in Dubai can be found on a sliding scale of affordability! And the scale slides for quality along with it !! Lol

I found Expat Woman to be the most helpful and in recent years the Facebook groups seem to have taken off... Try searching for groups for your gender and nationality or location ;) and if you know where you'll be living you can search for the community groups..you might find Catboy's page an amusing distraction - he's the dj on one of the morning radio shows here.. Look at Dubai 92 .com. Also on the subject of entertainment there's Time Out Dubai or What's On Dubai to give you an idea of what you can expect to be doing with your free time..

So are we saying that there is no day care facility in schools ?? Many have afterschool clubs, which mostly means they can finish an hour later than the normal time. Our school has limitd them this term to 2 per pupil so it wouldn't workifyou were looking for something every day..

It was in the press recently that the new term was to start on 31 st August for everyone as part of a new "unified calendar", so our school changed our return date from 7 th September and there was mass confusion across social media with all the schools seeming to be handling it differently. In answer to the OP I just searched Gulf News for the article and it seems to have vanished !! A google search brings up almost the same proposition for every year going back a few and there is no longer any mention of it on the KHDA website... So now I don't know...has anybody else had any information from their school ?

Thanks everyone for your advice. I am a bit confued. If I do a breakdown , i get - 1) 1 bed room in Dubai - `5500 AED per month (70000 AED) 2) Utitlities - 800 AED 3) Phone & internet - 300 AED 4) Schooling ( UK/Engtlish standard) 2500 AED 5) Food - 2000 AED This brings the total to 11000 AED I still have 3000 AED for other expenses. Will that not be enough ? Am I missing anything Health Insurance, Dentist, additional school costs (medical fee, sports, after school activities, trips, uniform etc), Red tape - Contents insurance, car insurance, salik (toll fees on some roads), registration, maintenance, petrol, alcohol licence if you want one, ID cards, visas, taxis if you only have one car, possibly school bus.... and the unexpected - traffic fines or emergency car repairs etc.. Dubai is not the place to live on a shoestring and it's especially important to have something tucked away for emergencies. But if you're determined, can live on beans on toast and not have a social life then go for it !! Groceries aren't that expensive and there are savings to be made everywhere plus loads of activities that are free or cheap...

We have our mail redirected by Royal Mail to my husband's work address.. I was also concerned about the amount of junk mail but I spent a few weeks replying to everything that came asking them to stop and now we get very little through..It works for us because although they say they won't forward post over a certain size I like to order DVD's this way as it's cheaper than shop n ship. But it's gone up since we first did it and it's quite expensive now, I think..

Not just Facebook Pages but groups too .... although, from a non-business person point of view, many of the groups are nothing BUT ads now and I find it quite tiresome...but for the businesses it's great !! lol Twitter ? Can't believe I've actually read back the whole of this thread - mainly the OP's posts..and i'm confused that in two posts she referred to "children", and in others she has just the one... And twice she stressed that she didn't want to involve the authorities for fear of repercussions for her child/ren. Yet her friend's husband went straight to their boss. And said what exactly ? The husband ended the affair in the beginning of the thread which was probably why the teacher tried to tell the OP. Presumably he told the boss of the pregnancy..How was the teacher still in the picture, having been banned and unemployed....Did the husband get prosecuted for the adultery ? In which case how did he get out of the country so quickly.. "placed a ban on him so DH had to leave the country"..surely if the pregnancy had been reported the DH would have been in a lot more trouble than having to leave because of his boss sacking him ...Unless by this time there was no pregnancy..in which case on what grounds did the boss dismiss him... Sorry, can't get my head round any more of it .... none of it seems to make any sense.... sorry.

Did anyone read the story in the UK press a couple of months ago about the babysitter that was found to be seriously physically abusing a toddler? It came to light because the dog was showing strong aggression to the babysitter whenever she arrived and the owners, thinking this was unusual of the situation and dog's character, placed hidden cameras in the house when the babysitter was alone with the dog and child. Had they reacted on similar black/white advice given in this thread, they would have had a dead dog and possibly dead child. None of us know the situation, let alone the dog, child or experience of the owners, yet there are calls to immediately end the life of the dog as if it's a disposable object. Some people have a far better understanding and experience of animal behaviour than others, and some feel a closer connection to their pets than others - I understand that. But if this dog is a loved member of the family then surely it would be better to have the dog assessed by someone that is a respected expert than to immediately put it down (and presumably hope the next one doesn't bite toddlers without warning). And before the person on this board than inevitably has had a dog that bit the babysitter that was under 24hr surveillance as she/he was finalising an animal behaviour thesis jumps on to point out the differences in the two situations, it's just an example - I'm sure there are endless others. Are you suggesting the driver has been interfering with the OP's child ?? Hasn't she got enough to worry about ??

I'm told the minimum spend is Dhs1,200. When my DH heads to our local a+e to prepare for a BBQ or other social gathering at our place, he easily spends close to that - but a hefty chunk of that is purely on tax! (Oh and probably his Fosters). No, I still think this Centaurus sounds decent value, not to mention a convenient service. Barracuda's still cheaper and a fun morning out !!

I just had to share this... We were at a BBQ yesterday in the Ranches and our friend had her happy juice discreetly delivered directly to her door! She tells me it's around 30% cheaper than buying from A+E or MMI AND it doesn't require a long sweaty drive all the way to Barracuda! It's called Centaurus - I understand they deliver not only to villas in Dubai but to apartments as well. To order online I believe you require a referral, so quote 'Martine'. What a discovery! and a huge minimum order !! lol
