I read that on wiki too - thanks, I really do notice when I haven't topped it up in a while, maybe my side of town has harder water. Plus isn't the water here hard, which is why everyone complains about hair loss?? no

I thought she could sponsor her herself since she is employed. My prior housemaid has a sister that lives here too. Her sister is also a housemaid and sponsored my maid originally as a tourist. That is how I met her, on a tourist visa. We had to change her visa over once we hired her but it was not expensive. Does a maid earn enough to sponsor someone ??

I never thought about that, Gorobattie, but why would they send out an email saying all students should get one if they're just filling them out themselves? I have no idea Anon, but the fact the each survey is about this child experience and what the parent discovered or touched throw his/her child. If you filled the survey, you will find it's very extensive questions about one child, only in the beginning will ask you how many kids in the same school, then you chose which one is the survey about, and the name of the child is labeled on the envelop out side... saying that selective grades will do the survey is total BS - sorry - and it's sent from KHDA to the school to be distributed to the students, then the parents do the survey. that's why I was waiting these cards and now I can't get a straight answer from the school, and waiting for the KHDA call... ours said it was anonymous and all the questions were optional

I got one for my eldest but not my youngest and they're at different schools !! At my youngest's school we were told we don't all have to fill them in... (I usually forget anyway !! lol) but there were some spares if we wanted to...

I thought the salt was to help keep the dishwasher clean, the salt goes into a special hole under the bottom rack, pour the salt in until it is full. I have to fill mine up regularly, and you know when it is out of salt as it doesn't clean as well. No, we've never put any in ours since we've been here - no need, the water's soft enough already.. quote - Dishwasher salt is a particular grade of granulated, crystalline sodium chloride intended for use in dishwashers. Like water softener salt, dishwasher salt regenerates ion exchange resins, and removes the calcium and magnesium ions that characterize hard water. Dishwater salt granules are larger than those of table salt. The granule size ensures that the salt dissolves slowly, and that fine particles do not block the softener unit. Dishwasher salt is 95% sodium chloride; an anticaking agent (e.g. sodium ferrocyanide or potassium ferrocyanide) constitutes the remaining 5%

It's to help soften the water but the tap water here is soft enough already so you shouldn't need it....

Glad you find it amusing abet. Landlords who only own one property, have a huge mortgage to pay at the going interest rate but are prevented from putting there rent up by more than 5% must be laughing away too - not! 22% is a huge difference for a landlord - how can it be fair to not allow any increase. It is because of this nonsense that landlords and agents are resorting to unethical means to get tenants out or increase rents. But surely, when you decide to buy to rent you are prepared for market rents to go down -it's all part of the gamble !! And in a place like Dubai where regulations and laws can change on a whim overnight it's hardly a surprise... if the rules had changed in the landlords' favour you'd be more than happy to collect the extra profit !! lol

we went after 12 months - husband's company is the tenant and they've seen it too many times, they couldn't be bothered to argue...so he emailed us to say he wanted to sell and we agreed we'd be out at the end of the tenancy - we'd only just renewed so it was almost a year. And it took him almost that long to sell it !! lol

I do not like the law because it still allows a way for the landlord to kick out the tenant with the excuse of wanting to sell. I am a tenant and a landlord at the same time and as a tenant I had to pay a major increase every year as I have small children and do not want to move. Our landlord would have gave us a notice to sell unless he was happy with the renewal amount. On the other hand , my tenant is paying 30-40 % less then the market price and has been in the property for the past 3 years. We are losing on both sides because we have ethic and cannot bully my tenant into paying us more money like our landlord is doing with us. How is that fair?? At the end of the day, when it's time to pay the mortgage that is not covered by the rent because of this very reason , when i have to cut down on my monthly expenses as i have to be able to pay it , i just hate this system and I would much prefer to have the market free because today,only the unscrupulous ones win. edited by Eli1979 on 03/11/2013 why don't you just live in your own house ?

Great thank you. I am having to move and was thinking of moving to Marina Residences. Is there anything bad about the place or things that you don't like? Oh and what is the sound proofing like? Can you hear your neighbors? Is the lady upstairs still not taking her shoes off ??

yes, second the Calpol, especially the sachets which is what we use... also I think gripe water is hit and miss (even though they don't put alcohol in it any more !! lol)

I don't find anything prohibitively expensive and the list of things I can't find gets shorter every year !! As MC says, would be better to ask about specifics as we're all different... for example, I have to bring blackcurrant lemsips over as the teen doesn't like the lemon which is all we can get here !! lol

To answer your question Littlefox i find that the water is slightly more expensive than local water however we are happy to pay the slight difference to ensure that our family drinks natural water as compared to factory water which is readily available at cheap rates on the market. Some may say water is water, but i really like to do my research before committing to a product, and the water my family uses comes in at a very low sodium rate. Lowest on the market if i remember correctly, while the Magnesia has a high magnesium content helping me cover my magnesium intake during my pregnancy and now just for the overall family health. I will say though a while ago we did use Oasis and their delivery was impeccable but we stopped the whole gallon thing as we don't trust the storage as a family, give them a try. I hope you're on commission !! lol

Hi Ladies, Have any of you seen this on the supermarket shelves recently? It seems to have disappeared a while ago, mango chutney is still here, but no lime pickle. I've nearly run out of my stash from the UK! saw loads in Union Co-Op yesterday (al Barsha) but I normally get it in Spinneys so they may have some as well - not looked for it lately though..

Hi! Does anyone know what the trick or treat hours are this year for Arabian Ranches? last year they were posted on the flyer as 6-8pm, but this year I can't find the hours anywhere. Any help welcome! Thanks in advance;) It says 5 - 7 pm on the leaflet for the event at the golf club.... We used to go to brunches at 16, non alcoholic of course, we even went as a big group straight from the British Council after sitting our exams (and bypassing the Rashid Hosp to donate blood to pay for the brunch of course).....I suppose times have changed. hmmph - all I ever got was tea and biscuits !!

My 17 year old hates brunches - says the food's rubbish and it's boring !! lol He's never tried to drink in public here but the last brunch we all had together one of the waiters never took his eyes off him, almost to the point of making us uncomfortable....

Someone posted about a missing tortoise on FB - he swore blind there was absolutely no way it could have got out of the garden yet it miraculously reappeared 3 months later !! So don't give up hope ! The gardener could have left the gate open, you can't be certain it was stolen...

we have everything delivered to husband's work address, including our Royal Mail redirected mail from home and so far don't know if anything's gone missing !! The teen ordered something from EBay which turned out to be "signed for" and was delivered during Eid so there was no-one at work to sign. According to the tracking it had got returned so we decided it must be lost but it turned up on husband's desk on Saturday !! lol

Susan Walpole in Jumaira Plaza is not totally closing ...the shops last day is29th Oct... but she is planning to open a kiosk there to continue selling the camels and cards discounted.....You can also buy the stock online susanwalpole.com Well when I went in - she told that was it - would be shut up and gone out of the UAE. I am surprised they would open a kiosk there, as the whole reason they are closing is because no one goes to the mall anymore, so no customers! Dear Mods, would you please consider posting a sticky suggesting families, owners of property and significant assets (cars, jewellery etc) seek advice from local government authorities as the inheritance laws affecting transfer of assets, guardianship of children etc are likely to be different from in their own countries and it's wise to have appropriate measures in place.
