We are both planning to apply for a license......not sure what that says about our drinking habits! I understood that you can't have your own and you need to be on your husbands. Yes that was before, it seems that rules have changed and a wife can now apply for her own separate license with his permission of course. http://www.africaneastern.com/t-applylicensedubai.aspx you can get your own card on the husband's licence anyway... how can you have your own if you don't work ? do they reduce the husband's allowance to compensate ?

Surely you'd just need a vaccination card stamped and signed by your doctor or a letter from your doctor to say you've had the vaccination. You can bring in prescription medication with such a letter and the vets don't need my dogs medical record just their vaccination certificates. DH has had two x-rays since being here and I am potentially having to have a second now too. His company are looking to change their freezone later this year so that will be three. Three chest xrays in four years is not good. Choice between my doctor sending medical records to the UAE with advice that I've had the TB vaccination or potentially getting lung cancer, I know which one I'd choose. And now the life of our visa has been reduced from 3 years to 2 we will need them more often !! lol The risk of getting cancer from the radiation (as opposed to the background radiation we are exposed to all the time in our daily life) is negligible - less than one in a million for every xray we have. Have I been living under a rock for 6 months ? where is there a new eating experience in the Ranches please ? Yes, you have! We've been eagerly awaiting it for months. Sadly, it is not the 'real' Belgian Beer Cafe we had heard but a knock-off. When you enter the golf club via the main entrance, the entrance is a ways down on the left. At one end it has a bakery and at the other is the bar. Probably about the same size as the AR Golf Club dining room. Plus outdoor space with a small playground. Was supposed to open this past weekend.... ohhhh thanks - had no idea !! lol Not been to the golf club for a while - so it's where the golf shop was ?

I use http://www.gotoursdubai.com The cost is 150 Aed transport plus 50 AED Oman visa cost if you pre pay, 200 AED plus 50 AED oman visa cost if you pay on the day The service is excellent, and leaves from Dubai Marina Mall Drop MIL at dubai marina mall, collect her again about 4 hrs - 5hrs later you must book ahead of time on the website and places fill up quickly In that case it's going to be VERY expensive !! lol

My EGate didn't work a few weeks ago on my way back in from Cyprus! So the fab man at the EGate upgraded me to the Iris system! So SO SO much easier than EGate card and fingerprints :) I thought that said Irish system lol

I got mine in the Dnata Holidays building on SZR, Business Bay. And yes, children are not allowed an EGate until they are 18. Myself and both our children go through on my husband's egate I thought they just let you through at the special gate, - where you go when Egate doesn't work! yes, that's the only bit we ever use !! never had more than a couple of people in front of us...

They won't. We will be out of control and organising fun things like an over 40, no kids thing. Now, we surely don't want that to happen now, do we? ? why would you want to do that - go to an EW coffee morning... And why would we want to do that when some of us over 40's with either no kids or no kids here work all day and would rather socialise ourselves..... The coffee morning I went to didn't have any kids and most of the women were over 40 (and some ! lol)

Im not sure a partial number plate counts as someone's personal details seeing as there is nobody to link the number plate too. My number plate is out there for the whole world to see! I could post my neighbours number plate here and none of you would have a clue who he is, where he lives, what he looks like or anything else reltaing to him. [b'>You dont even know the car[/b'>. You may be able to find out the make and model of it but thats not personal either Yes, we know the colour, the make, the letter and half the number plus a description of the woman and the location...

sorry but this question is impossible to answer - everyone will have their own opinion. (outside of the tiny handful of schools that everyone accepts as being the best, which are next to impossible to get into anyway !! lol). Best advice is to find out where you will be living first then start applying to the nearest working outwards...

I've got filmon but it changed and now doesn't have BBC for some reason. Suppose I could try a different Vee thing, will attempt that. Thanks for suggestions. Etisalat not available where we live, I assume, du only I just tried my Filmon and I've still got the BBC channels no problem. I'm with DU. yes, so have we but they've changed the channel layout - took us a while to find BBC1 - maybe Cushion just needs to have another look...

If you need a recommendation for a "wotsit" put email details up and i will send info... ( on merit of course ;-)) used same wotsit for about 8 years... am on du thanks but it works on our wotsit and we've had no other issues with said wotsit for the last 4 years...

Try film on. You can also pay a few quid a month to tape things. An app on iPad and think you can now get on laptop. yes I already use Film on - was the first one on here to recommend it !! lol but thanks anyway... at least ours works on the veewotsit..you could try a different one Cushion...or change provider (husband had it working ok at work which uses Etisa lat lol) <em>edited by Doubting Thomas on 18/10/2013</em>

I have never understood the loyalty of C4 customers. C4 is awful. The checkout is a JOKE and a complete waste of time. I might understand it if the food was very cheap or very fresh (hello, fish section) but its neither. Over the years I have developed a new motto - if its not at LuLu, I don't need it It's cheap

@Doubting Thomas She is not miles away from family and friends- in fact she is a short metro ride away from at least 4 of her cousins who she sees every single weekend. A13 Cousins are not immediate family.... She stays at her workplace, that makes it different from your example of doctors and nurses' access to internet Thank you Arch for understanding my point...

If you read Julian Fellowe's "explanation" which was all over the press it wasn't done for sensationalism and if it was then they would have filmed it as such.. Food for thought and up to you what you believe, but many from the East think that drinking ice cold water while in boiling heat causes colds/respiratory problems It's only "food for thought" if you ignore basic medical science and give credence to baseless superstition... Colds are caused by viruses that enter your respiratory system through air transmission (sneezing or coughing) or by being picked up on your hands and then passed to your nose or mouth. Despite what our mothers told us, actually being cold cannot give you a cold, and nor can anything you drink, regardless of its temperature. I'd love to know how drinking cold water is supposed to give you a cold. It's no surprise that colds and other respiratory infections are so common here, though, given how it seems to be culturally acceptable to cough and sneeze into other people's faces without so much as an apology. Spitting releases viruses into the air as well, which can be picked up by others nearby. That's been mentioned on here before - I remember a post about how the Pakistani gardeners supposedly won't drink chilled water due to some superstition about it upsetting their stomach... MG is right - a cold is a virus and cannot be caught by drinking chilled water, going out with wet hair (something my parents always used to try to tell me lol) or living with air conditioning...

Since moving here I've had 4 surgeries (unrelated to Dubai but still - so many hospital visits!), countless colds (some lasting up to a month), lots and lots of food poisoning (twice hospitalised), eye infections and conjunctivitis (once scraped my cornea during a sandstorm), etc. Hubby has had Epstein Barr and lots of cases of upset tummy, colds, flu etc. Be aware that food preparation here leaves a LOT to be desired - so getting gurgly tummies is very normal. As for colds - it's coz of the AC. Takes a while to get used to. Have it cleaned regularly. We also use a humidifier so the air's not bone dry. blimey !! that's some bad luck there TDB...but how does it compare to the years before you moved here ? I've been here 3 years and have yet to see a doctor, have had one maybe 2 bad colds, and one bad reaction to something I ate. My husband has had one surgery for a long standing problem from before we came here, another condition needing surgery due to a sporting accident (has had more serious ones at home !!) and maybe one cold...our kids are the same... I think it would be unfair to put everything down to living here.. The surgeries would have occurred regardless as they were due to women's problems / D&C / Csec. however I had to see at least 10 doctors to get a proper diagnosis for my endometriosis. The food poisoning etc I suffered maybe once or twice in the UK, and norovirus, but here, it seems every other week either me or DH has some kind of tummy complaint! Doubtless down to poor hand washing and hygiene as well as food quality - I've thrown out tonnes of food that smelt off. Colds I suffer more here but probs due to DD bringing it all home from nursery! It is worth getting probiotics - I've bought acidophilus before and this has reminded me to get some more. Husband bought some asparagus once that was all mushy inside but that's all I've ever had to throw away..the meat and chicken I buy here is excellent, maybe we're just lucky !! lol

Thank you for all your input ladies; very helpful. We will definitely go ahead and get our maid connected :) @mich72-- this is fantastic; I had no idea such a system existed. I will have hubby look into it. @ARancher- if you had to do it over again, what would you have done differently? The time different is 4 hours and all members of her family work, so it can get tricky to find a convenient time. @SueB- thanks for helping me with the ground rules. We'll go over them with her. So far she has conscientious and responsible so I'm hoping all will go smoothly. FYI- I have worked in hospitals and clinics here and in North America. No employee was given access to work wifi in these settings, including the doctors. Everyone had access to the internet from desktop computers only. Employees could get their own data plans if they wanted to access the internet from their smartphones. I don't see why it's considered a "right"; it is a privilege unless you need it for work purposes. Did all the employees live in their workplace and were they all miles away from their family and friends ?

oh dear, the way we do ours seems lazy now !! Rinse the rice (basmati) under the cold tap, add to a pan of salted boiling water, stir, bring back to the boil, stir and simmer for 10 minutes. Rinse with hot water, drain and serve. simple.. lol I've always believed the "never stir as it releases the starch" is an old wives' tale..
