One measure I use of how good a school is is to go at school pick up and drop offs and see how respectful the parents are - Choueifeit, EIS - those parents park any old place, block the road, drop their kids off across the street, rarely get out of the car, etc. For me, the education might be brilliant or not but if the other parents aren't people I'd want to associate with, I wouldn't send my children to there. edited by sheikhandbake on 05/05/2015 No offence but where is this Holy Grail of polite, respectful parents who don't park as if they are the only parent at the school, walk their child to the door without pushing others out of the way and can actually string together a civil sentence ??

I've seen these lists before. It may seem funny, but it doesn't make the British very nice people does it?? Why not just say what you mean? On the contrary, many of those expressions show that we ARE being nice about it - why be brutally honest, to the point of rudeness, when there is no need ? "no harm done" when we are quietly seething at the result of the other person's actions - which would you prefer us to say ? lol Other nationalities are known for their rudeness or arrogance, the British are known for their politeness and sarcasm... I know which i'd rather be :)

When they finished this roundabout there was a lot of talk about how the arrows were incorrect - there is no way you should ever be taking an exit after straight ahead from any lane other than the inside... .

They are used as a bullying tool by the same handful of posters who have brought EW down, IMO. Most often they appear on these types of[b'> "what's wrong with EW" threads[/b'> deflecting attention elsewhere but their bizarre behaviour is consistent with school playground bullies with far too much time on their hands. They're the only interesting discussions on here these days lol

Nomad I could not agree more with you, it’s disgraceful that anyone would thumb down a post on that thread. The whole thumbs thing needs to be removed as it is being misused. It's always been misused and was always going to be about the poster not the post...we've all had innocuous posts mercilessly downthumbed and always will until they stop letting people who aren't logged in use them...

I remember dating a guy years ago who used to say of people: "You have a face for radio." I didn't care for this gal's voice from the first promo, and I now turn their show off where I used to listen frequently. Voice is very important in radio -- in my opinion. Face for radio means they aren't attractive  Yet that certainly isn't the case here for the majority lol Voice training and coaching isn't hard and most people could do with it. But that's where you can tell the ones that do all the voiceovers, they much more control and don't shout. well, 92 only seem to have 3 people who do all the ads and voiceovers !! The other day they played 3 ads in a row with the same bloke !! lol

Why should the promoter have to pay because your babysitter let you down ? The refunds were for people who couldn't manage the change of date... Best bet is to try and sell them - plenty of Facebook groups to choose from but I don't think it's sold out yet so unless you drop the price I doubt anyone will be interested... Or you could try for another agency - surely they should have been able to provide you with an alternative... The promoter refunded tickets for this concert, as they changed the date, but the OP missed the deadline. Yes, I know

I wouldn't discount the Ranches just on traffic - it depends on timing !! If you leave before 7 it's not a problem and they are currently working on an extra exit lane to help relieve the traffic or you could do what I do and take a short cut around Global Village which gets you out of the Ranches with no traffic issues at all !!

Congratulations! You have quite a varied choice there for schools, all very different. For a prep independent school mentality that is nuturing look at Harland International school, based at Meydan neareast to DIFC, comes in very affordable comparative to Foremarke and Nord. For housing for DIFC, look at Jumeriah 1, 2 or 3, Dubai Silicon Oasis. * Hartland

Actualyy many of you here are misunderstanding the article - he has not gone to trial yet and the article says that [u'>[b'> "If found guilty, the defendant could be jailed for up to six months and deported." [/b'>[/u'> not that he has/will be jailed - yet edited by Cold on 23/04/2015 edited by Cold on 23/04/2015 As it stands a person detained on any charge pending a court hearing will spend on average 3 months or longer in jail before reaching court for his first hearing, so regardless of guilt or innocence they will be jailed for probably half of any anticipated sentence even if eventually pardoned or found innocent, so even though the paper reports that this person "could do up to 6 months jail", he most certainly is in jail now and probably will have done almost that time when he reaches a judge. This particular incident happened in December 2014 and was heard for the first time on April 21st 2015, when the story broke, he has been in jail for four months since his initial arrest, a ruling will be heard on May 17 which will make him having served almost six months since his arrest until the matter is judged upon no matter what the outcome is against him. http://gulfnews.com/news/uae/courts/tourist-in-court-for-patting-policewoman-s-arm-1.1496156 edited by chezmoi on 24/04/2015 Not any more - there are plans to make a special court just for tourists that reduces their waiting time so they get dealt with more quickly...bit sad that such a thing should be necessary though..

Yes - you can set it up in the uk, I imagine Australia has them too. Google for one of many companies that offer this - pay a monthly subscription plus credit to pay for the calls and they issue 2 phone numbers with a UK dialling code of your choice and when you get here buy a phone and connect it (sorry, don't know how the technical stuff works but I don't think it's difficult). but you didn't hear it from me ;)

But why do so many people have an issue with her accent? I'm surprised that in a place where you hear so many different English accents all day long that hers is a problem. Personally I don't mind it! It's not her accent, it's her [i'>tone[/i'> - to me it's harsh and when I listen to her at length I find it uncomfortable

Actually, it's a bit like me saying I've just got a job as a driving instructor, I'm sure no-one minds that I can't drive... As a radio presenter your voice is your tool - or at least it is on top calibre stations, you can be the greatest personality on the planet but if your voice isn't easy on the ear you won't get far in a decent radio station and i'm sorry but this lady's voice is not easy on the ear..Furthermore, if I was her boss I would be keen to find all feedback, both good and bad.. I don't mean any offence to her as she seems to come across as a really sweet person but I don't feel she's right for the job, that's all. And if you take a job in the public eye you should be able to take the bad reviews along with the good... eta, sorry to echo the sentiments above - I hadn't read it before I wrote this. <em>edited by Doubting Thomas on 21/04/2015</em>

Who brings their washing in? Who dries washing outside in summer ??

I have kept training diaries since arriving here...running. Looking at my diaries it isn't worse than last year. Last year I ran at 11.30am on 24th March and vowed that was the last time I ran later than 8am due to the temperature. This year I am still running even at noon , although today was tough and will probably be the last time I don't get my **** in gear before 8am. I think last year and from my diaries it looks as if we had a hot spell mid to late March then a cooler week or two..by mid April it was again very hot. I think this year we've just been luckier with cooler weather so it's hitting harder in the last few days. Ten days ago it was almost cool so I reckon it's the sudden difference making it feel bad. Don't forget that as each year passes your blood thins and you get more acclimatised so it won't feel as hot...

Maybe instead of constantly analysing what has happened to get us here, we need to look forward. This would require some shy people to be more outgoing with their posts. Some people to bite their tongues. And some people to log in and post instead of lurking. Let's have some banter. We also need more maids who stamp on their meat, more cucumber sellers and a sprinkle of humour. It's going to be a long summer otherwise! This isn't the only place to hang out - you're just going to have to bite the bullet and use your facebook more !! lol

I quite like some of the humorous replies that come back, but some of them are a bit overly terse for my personal taste and some seem to verge on the outright rude which I'm not a fan of. I realize of course that taste varies and that's OK of course, i'd hate to see more heavy handed moderation. I did take (at the start until I realised it was common) offence at some of the really obvious spoiler threads that appeared with lots of fake posters. I thought that was a real shame but again I have seen a few more of these now and have mostly got over it. That and the "I have heard" brigade which still does, to my great shame, really manage to wind me up over my morning coffee! [b'>Facebook groups don't replace an open forum though as many are closed[/b'>? You mean the groups are closed ? They replace a forum because they are only closed to non-members in the same way you have to be a member to post on a forum, athough I agree you are free to browse the whole of the forum without logging in unlike a fb group (though many of them [i'>are[/i'> public)

I am an old poster, with 8-10 years and never a ban. Time to time I have a question that I need help with. I always come here full of hope. My posts rarely have more than 2-3 responses, many times zero. I do not think that my questions are particularly difficult. My theory is maybe I am ignored because I never went to a single coffee meet ups and no one knows me in person - I work during the day, and I have my own friends anyways. I do not really understand why I keep coming back. Seeing all those threads with so many useful responses always makes me try again and again. Weird. When I respond others, sometimes I get thumbed down although I have not said anything outrageous. That feels sad and discouraging. Hence I respond posts less often. edited by dentro on 12/04/2015 I've only been to one coffee morning but none of the ladies there knew anything about the forum and even the host seemed vague then eventually admitting - oh yes I used to go on there sometimes but not anymore... They are run independently from the forum as a business so it's unlikely you would know any of the women there...Although I have been told of the EW thing where many forum members won't admit to it when they meet people !! lol Well, then I have no idea why my posts are so predictably unpopular, regardless the topic. Lol. :D I had this feeling that the core (or the core at one point) must knew each other as they kept referring to events and facts that only they seem to know and some posts were even incomprehensible because of these references. Maybe that was just a one off period of EW. I think you'll find that was more likely to be another common "venue" rather than coffee mornings.... ETA - sometimes posters do know each other from other places such as facebook... <em>edited by Doubting Thomas on 12/04/2015</em>

Our company pay full school fees for up to 2 children wherever we choose to go so there is no limit but I would definitely get it confirmed that they will also pay for our other two... Also there are extras which our company doesn't include such as school trips, uniform etc but I have to say the salary is very impressive... Maybe the company say don't worry about the school because they DO have a debenture (corporate seat) for you - I would ask.

Some great points above that I think EW admin should consider. I'd like to add that the layout and functionality of the forum is something we would see in the 90's! I mean things like adding a profile picture just became possible ( I still cant figure out how to add it!), and a lot of basic features are missing. Also, there is a reason why popular forums and Facebook pages don't allow a thumbs down - it's very off putting. Basic features that should be added if the EW forum really wants to be on par with other forums: - ability to tag someone (e.g. I agree with @Asti) - ability to direct message - ability to preview threads on the home page (e.g. show a snippet of latest post) - search results should highlight the searched word so you're not looking through dozens of posts - ability to insert pictures into a post These are just a few basic features that all high-quality forums have. edited by sourskittleashnut on 07/04/2015 Another forum I know had the "kudos" system where members got graded on their posts but very quickly withdrew it as it wasn't popular. Private messaging was promised by an admin recently though they didn't say when just that it was being worked on If you click on the Recent Posts you can see all recent posts but in full rather than just one line... There are other forums for expat women in Dubai if you google for them but they are mostly no busier than this one (although they do have some of the features you mention)

I received this yesterday. Dear Parents I am writing to inform you of an incident reported in the press refers to a White Range Rover Sport car in the Umm Suqeim 3 area. A member of the public alleges that a car pulled up and attempts were made to lure a child into the car. Being aware and smart the child ran away. The car did make a U-turn and tried to approach the child again. Luckily there was an adult present to scare them off. The number plate and the photo was given to the police. It is important to know that both the child and the witness acted responsibly and that no-one was hurt, but cases like this teach us that we must be vigilant, not only about the welfare of our own children, but to help safeguard others in our community. Please discuss with your child the importance of ‘stranger danger’ and what you can do to raise awareness with your child Know where your children are at all times. Make it a rule that your children must ask permission or check in with you before going anywhere. Give your children your work and cell phone numbers so they can reach you at all times Point out safe places and routes home. Show your children safe places to play, safe roads and paths to take, and safe places to go if there’s trouble. Teach your child to trust their instincts. Explain that if they ever feel scared or uncomfortable, they should get away as fast as they can and tell an adult. Tell them that sometimes adults they know may make them feel uncomfortable, and they should still get away as fast as possible and tell another adult what happened. Reassure children that you will help them when they need it. Do not be over-protective but help them make wise choices. This applies as much to teens as it dies to younger children. Teach your children to be assertive. Make sure they know that it’s okay to say no to an adult and to run away from adults in dangerous situations. Encourage your children to play and hang out with others you trust. There’s safety in numbers! This does not mean that you need to approve of all your child’s friends! Do make sure that your child knows which friends can be relied upon if there is an uncomfortable situation. Cyber harassment and inappropriate online content This also means getting to know what your child is doing online. This is another type of harassment that is more insidious and hard sometimes to detect. Please do foster transparent communications with your child regarding online activity. The school is concerned that children are becoming increasingly sophisticated in the use of the internet. Please ask your child to share the history of internet sites with you on a regular basis since these may include proxy servers which may be used to circumvent content filters. Who did you receive it from and how come you received it when you're not even in Dubai any more ? Are you sure it's genuine ?

If you are on Facebook, I suggest you join the local community group "Meadows, Lakes, Springs Community - Dubai". Only residents of that community are allowed to join - you need to send your address to admin when you submit your join request - but you will certainly find people in there who will be happy to organise get togethers etc at local parks or pools. It will also be a good source of information on trouble shooting issues with your villa, tradespeople, local facilities and suppliers given you are new to the area. Are we allowed to advertise these groups on here now ?
