I leave at 6am and I don't find traffic to be a problem. I feel the school traffic when coming home is much worse. I guess my hours help with avoiding traffic cuz I've seen how backed up it can get just to exit gate1. I wish they would open a gate on the global village side, it's such a huge detour coming back home from global village and the petrol station. There did used to be an entrance there, I don't know why it was closed - security maybe ? edited by Doubting Thomas on 26/02/2015

Can't stand spam, it actually stops me visiting brands that I previously shopped in cos I refuse to give custom to companies who litter up my phone with rubbish texts.... edited by Artemis2 on 26/02/2015 Yes, a lot of people, myself included, find certain types of advertising a turn-off...

I'm obviously in the minority here, and beginning to wish I'd never pointed out the obvious fact that on an open internet forum, all may not be as it seems. Goodness knows, there have been enough examples of that over the years. And yes, I find some of the responses ironic. However this is an open forum and [b'>we are all entitled to our own opinions[/b'>. As long as they are not "precious" or "making mountains out of molehills"....

It's just to bring Abu Dhabi in line with Dubai.... This is not correct. It applies UAE wide and the circular to schools is coming next week. However, this is a minimum guideline for student-teacher contact days. Schools don't have to follow the reduction in days, they just have to keep the minimum. edited by starfishalicja on 25/02/2015 Apologies, I got that information from a post on facebook by someone who is a school registrar....

Have been here nearly 5 years and have never worn anything but flipflops !! Lol..I also don't have a coat or jacket here or an umbrella..just depends on the individual i guess...but we do have a blanket in the car for winter school runs and i do wear warm trousers in winter...also, aircon can get quite chilly in summer. . CP is right about your stuff sitting in the heat - we always remind people not to pack candles !! Personally i find food shoping no more expensive here than at home unless you are buying niche imports and the range of plastic storage and bags is fab, although i don't actually use bin bags (black sack gets replaced when they empty our wheely bin 3 times a week - yes really....not once a fortnight like at home !! and i recycle carrier bags for inside bins)..

If you really have such a [b'>low opinion [/b'>of EW posters, perhaps you should petition the Mods for a sticky.................. Be aware, this is the Internet, what you say may be read by others. On the contrary, many of them get a lot from EW and are happy to pay it back, you're the one who is being sarcastic and condescending.. "did you expect it to be confidential" ? No, I don't think anyone here is that naïve - their point is that they feel used and mocked... Why would you not expect posters to at least be real people ?? You don't get irony, do you? Is that when you're rude about people then when you don't get the response you expected you pretend it was a joke ? That kind of irony ?

I am baffled by this latest spat. For a kick off, I don't understand what anybody would gain from reanimating inane questions about how long it takes to get from A to B from another board. I mean, seriously? I think it might be a bot, but then to what purpose? I can see that those who bothered to answer are miffed since they presumably thought they were replying to someone authentic. But what I can't understand is what possible ulterior motive would compel someone to construct an identity and bombard a board with these vacuous posts. Good grief. Dullesville. It makes [i'>Moonflower[/i'> look like Comedy Central. They make lots of stock posts such as 'Thank you for your help, it was very useful' then come back days or weeks later and edit the post to incorporate a spam link - because it is an old post no-one notices yet the thing is sat there for google etc to pick up as a valid posting of their link... I honestly can't believe the vapors going on here, all over a poster who may be a fake or a bot. In case you hadn't noticed, it's an anonymous internet forum, not a private chat with your best girlfriend. Did you expect it to be confidential? And even if you have spent time posting a well thought out and researched reply, does it really matter? You put useful information out there, perhaps a real poster reading it may have benefited. As for sneaky or lazy journalism, sources are sources, I can't think of any better (or more accurate) way of getting a feel for what the woman on the street is thinking than to read a forum like this. In my day we had to go out and doorstep. I would, of course have credited the source, as an anonymous poster on a public forum, but I do not believe that I would have been betraying a confidence, rather that I was giving a voice to someone who had something to say. I know EW has become rather dull these days, but really, is it necessary to make mountains out of molehills by being so darn precious? I think there is maybe a range of internet "savvyness" (lol) among the members here and some people genuinely do feel that EW means more to them than that..it's entirely up to the individual what they put into or expect from posting so I don't think it's up to any one person to come along and tell them what they should or shouldn't think...just saying...

If it's a public group then all the posts will be visible to everyone, including all your friends so as CM said it depends on the settings of the group rather than your own settings..If the group is closed then only other members can see posts and if the group is secret no-one outside of the group can see anything, not even the group i!! lol

Antique museum used to have a really good collection of proper Arabic knives etc way in the back near where they did repairs. Smelled heavily of contact cement/glue back there so think it probably fried a few of my brain cells looking around there. Last time I was there was over 8 years ago so might have changed. But worth a look. Google it for directions- in Al Quoz. Thank you Sue!!! So I just enter antique museum in Al Quoz? I've just been told he's happy to look in generic knife shops too, where you get your typical Wusthof etc as well, but it would be cool for him to see the antique ones. thanks so much :) The antique museum isn't a museum and it doesn't sell antiques !! lol ..It's a huge wholesale gift shop :)

If the photos on the DM are to be believed, it looks like much more than minor damage. Hope the authorities put in place regulations regarding fire safety, specifically about having working fire alarms. I guess these buildings will never be retro fitted with fire retardant materials. The fire alarms were working

It's quite regularly stated on here the Auz/New Zealand beef is 'best'. So that people are properly informed about what they are consuming I thought it would be beneficial to post some accurate information. Hormones, while apparently strictly regulated, are allowed in NZ and Aus beef. They are banned in Europe. Therefore, buying beef from countries where hormones and antibiotics are banned is the safest bet. Unfortunately, it seems nearly impossible to get good quality European beef in Dubai. Europe's ban on exports to the US (because of the BSE crisis in the 1990's ) has now been lifted on Ireland and other Euopean countries will soon also be allowed to export to the US again. Irish beef is grass fed and hormone free.....it was available here at one point and I'm personally hoping it will be available again soon. Argentinian beef is also grass fed and hormone free although they are not major exporters. http://www.foodsmart.govt.nz/whats-in-our-food/chemicals-nutrients-additives-toxins/agricultural-production/hormonal-growth-promotants/ Not sure what your point is - the first paragraph of that link states that [i'>there is no scientific evidence of any detrimental impact on human health through the consumption of meat and meat products that have been produced using approved HGPs.[/i'> No problem then

sarah, thanks for your suggestions, I haven't checked out the FB page, that's a thought. Chrissy thanks for your tip, I'll look into them. DT, I feel your pain, what a disaster. Good grief about your next door neighbour. When you say 'extension', what exactly do you mean, I thought there were very strict rules about extensions, so how come it's taken so long? If you don't mind, which company is doing it so I know who to avoid. I swear, it's doing my head in trying to get this sorted. Even trying to get a quote seems to take an interminable length of time then Team Clueless rocks up and the guys just gawp at you as if you've alighted from another solar system. Grrrr...... edited by Artemis2 on 19/02/2015 He's had several I think..sorry no idea who...Butch Cassidy and Jesse James no doubt....He's gutted the whole ground floor and extended out with a single storey around 3 feet higher than our dividing wall, so normal height and painted it dark brown whereas all our exteriors are the same beigey colour...Emaar cack or whatever it is...

Hi, I have heard that Dubai schools will possibly close early in June this year, as Ranadan starts 18 June. Otherwise that last week of school would have shorter days in any case, and could you have the end of the year parties as some kids would be fasting? Does anyone have any more info on this?? Also, if they close that week early, would they reopen early in end August? Trying to book flights for the summer but not sure what to do!!! Children don't have to fast

Our LL recently sent a dynamic duo to replace two of our water tanks..i suspect she found them sweeping the road or something, they certainly weren't plumbers..among the catalogue of disasters I caught one of them cutting the ceiling tile with my best kitchen knife (later found his broken jigsaw blade on the workstop when I cleaned up)..when they'd finished neither tank was earthed so husband refused to pay until they came back and made it safe...seeing their faces as he tried to explain they'd left both our tanks in an unsafe condition was a joy...endless head shaking and no problem sir...so my husband ended up getting in the loft with him and giving him a crash course in electrics..he didn't know what an earth was or that the way they'd left both our tanks could have killed someone... Our next door neighbour has been having an extension built since the end of August - the wife told us 10 more days 2 weeks before Christmas and they're still hammering and drilling today...and it's the cr@ppiest job you ever saw...John Wayne clearly the project manager....

Our company will only pay for 2 school fees !! I do worry when people come on here saying they've done lots of research....So did I, and so do most of us but to be honest Dubai is like no other place on earth and there will be lots of things all the research in the world can't prepare you for..some pleasant surprises too :)..I will never forget the poster who was adamant she could walk her kids to school right through the height of the summer because she always walks everywhere at home...no need for a second car... Dubai is not the place to live on a shoe string but it looks like your package is ok so you should be fine.. edited by Doubting Thomas on 19/02/2015

My husband bought me a one-of-its-kind lab created longhair type dog - I am hazy on the details as my collections are so vast - and it is of such a high quality pure breed it only pees Evian. We use it to water our prize winning Black Orchids and I swear (oo there I go again) they started taking the **** out of every other entry at the Annual Flower Auction for Prized Blooms. Thats the problem with the noveau riche as they say - they dont quite know what to do with their money. So your Valentines Day is just about "keeping up with the Jones's" For us every day is a day to show each other how much we love each other, neither of us see any need for presents, expensive or not.
