My friend has left the UK and has been living in Africa where she has met a local man and they have moved in together. She wanted to take him home with her to meet everyone at Christmas but couldn't get a visa so had to travel alone..she is still trying...

My husband has always worked a 5 and a half day week (alternate Saturdays) - it's standard here for many industries.. The main problem you have with being a working mum is childcare which many women get over by having a full-time maid. Part-time work, as has already been said is extremely hard to come by but not impossible. Business opportunities are limited because you can't do anything legally here without a licence - not like at home where, if you have a creative skill or talent, you can make money working from home... good luck with the move and congratulations on the job !!

Those posting for payment jobs sound interesting, wonder where we should apply. Agreed it seems a laugh but it's big business and many forums rely on it to keep going, especially now that Facebook is taking so much of their business... so yes, it can be quite lucrative, if you can be bothered !! lol

My friend travels regularly for work - she's never been asked to cover her hair and only wears an abaya which she puts on at the airport. ETA - upstairs at Lulu's sells them edited by Doubting Thomas on 08/02/2015

Exactly !! lol And for the last time (hopefully lol) I was not arguing about her choice of username merely the fact that she said it was more geographically correct which I felt it wasn't...and I really wish I hadn't bothered now...

[ We've seen quite a few examples of it of late though (i'm thinking of some threads which are now so heavily moderated that it's hard to make head nor tail of them so many "fake" posters have been removed). I can only agree in general but I do detect quite a lot of people who seem to want to create spam. The again I learned the word "spambot" a couple of weeks a go here so who's to say they're actually people! On the other hand Chezmoi is clearly not one of these people and in regards of her point she was nothing but honest and quite reasonable I think....hasn't this gone on long enough? Chezmoi hasn't been duplicitous at all and there is nothing wrong with changing your username for whatever reason. It's the people that have more than one username going at a time and pretend to be two (or more?) different people that I find weird. Spammers/stealth advertisers obviously do it for a reason, to advertise something but there have been a couple of instances lately where advertising has nothing to do with it  I wasn't going to say any more on the subject, but seemingly I need to make clear that at no time has anyone suggested there was anything wrong with her name or that she was doing anything "dodgy"... Daza, googling "forum posting for payment" might make it clearer !! lol

Why would anyone bother having more than one username? To agree with themselves? Disagree with themselves? Laugh at their own jokes? And how did people who enjoy such things amuse themselves before the internet? By spreading malicious gossip? Poison pen letters? Gin from 10am? That is a lot of questions but I find such seemingly pointless duplicity totally bizarre. Agree Daza yet, if you could find the story I related before the argument on this thread, I know someone who actually saw it happening...and no, I have no idea why either..I have enough trouble keeping up with one internet identity !! lol

If you are reading this TDB, your presance is being missed here on the forum and hope you rejoin us. She's alive and well and posting on facebook

Haha !! you are all spectacularly missing the point..I apologise if you felt my comments to you were unnecessarily inane Di but the point is - I have nothing against your choice of name, why on earth would I ? I was simply responding to your comment that it was geographically more correct. That is all. edited by Doubting Thomas on 08/02/2015

Most English speaking people understand a few French expressions commonly used in English such as, c'est la vie, comme ci comme ca, chez moi, sacre bleu etc. The meaning is an appropriate name for someone who has gone home. Sorry if it confused you. Seems it's you who are confused - Anon was the one who thought you were in France !! You just asked how a French name is more geographically correct and I have just explained to you how it is by virtue if the meaning, so if you understood the meaning why did you ask? It's French

This is why I don't believe much of what I read on here... It's a real shame isn't it? I was looking back at 2011 post today that I'd been involved it, seemed like a whole different bunch back them x Agree, I was thinking this morning reading the forum its getting more like the classifieds. That edit would be a name change as DT says , although its weird to edit your own posts as the new name trying to look like another person. I did change my user name to a more appropriate name when I left Dubai (di@dxb) but I have mentioned it several times and not keeping a secret of the fact at all, so hope I have not caused any confusion. I had no idea that was you. Thanks for the clarification. Are you in France now? No in the UK currently, someone sugessted the name change since I was not @dxb anymore so I thought it best to be more geographically correct! edited by chezmoi on 07/02/2015 How is a French name more geographically correct when you are living in the UK ? lol Its the meaning of the word that is correct. A French expression generally understood by English speakers. Oh yes, that'll be why Anon asked if you are living in France... lol

I'm sure I've told this story before but a few years ago a group of women from here used to meet up regularly through another forum and one time they went to one of their houses and the woman telling the story said that she "noticed" the woman's open laptop logged into here in the name of one of the notorious nasty posters and not the name they all knew her by...she was really shocked and never thought of the woman the same after that... Personally I just thought she was to blame for snooping on the woman's laptop but whatever...just goes to show that you really do never know who is behind any of the names on here and it's not uncommon for forum posters to have more than one persona....

The poster has changed her name - the same happens when you quote a poster, if they change name the quoted post will always show their original name. There's no way anyone else can access your account without your password.

It depends where on the Ranches you live - in the mornings it takes me 20 minutes just to get out !! My school should be 25 minutes max but at school run time it's a good 40 in the morning and 25/30 in the afternoon.. I'd recommend Safa Community School - probably no more than 15 minutes edited by Doubting Thomas on 05/02/2015

I'm new to these boards and haven't even moved to Dubai yet. Actually we are in the planning and research page so I've been reading everything I can get my eyes on at the moment. This thread is a foregin concept to me. My BF/Future Husband and I never plan on having kids. It's just me Him and the dog. So I'm wondering if a Maid is even necessary? Does anyone on here not have a maid at all? Just curious. Thanks for any replies! I've never had one

In Appletiser's defence, I thought the same because all I knew about this was a short snippet on the radio news a few days ago which gave no indication of the seriousness of it, rather making it sound like she was recovered.. I now see it was actually more serious than that and she is not yet out of danger...

http://www.thenational.ae/sport/other/2015-dubai-tour-road-closures--interactive The KHDA have said that for schools near the route parents can stay at home but our school will still open to give parents the choice..I think there will be pockets of congestion - someone was stuck on SZR for 3 hours around midday but we got to and from school with no sign of any problem... Tomorrow will be more of an issue as Umm Sequiem, Meydan and Al Khail roads will be closed... Plus the old ByPass Road and Al Quadra will affect the Ranches at pick up time..

Haven't noticed any more people leaving than usual but I know in my husband's company they're looking to cut costs wherever they can and the easiest way is to replace the Western expats with those who will work for less money and rubbish packages, who are also woefully less capable but of course that doesn't come into it !! lol...

How interesting - our school has advised us it will be shut. But the message we got was that the KHDA gave them a directive not to open. Would have liked the option, especially as the road closures are not particularly close to school and don't start until 13:30! Depends where you are and I think they start around 11 elsewhere...some school buses have been cancelled too I believe...

Lots of villas have an inside ensuite maid's room with an outside door. If she is looking after a baby i'd say it would be easier if she is inside the house.. But the maid herself may prefer to have her room away from the house so that when she goes off duty she can switch off properly..(I would prefer that too, rather than having her in my house 24/7).

Unfortunately had LadyMary given the full picture in her OP this thread may not have taken the nasty turn - my first thought was to tell her to mind her own business but it then turns out that the SIL has asked for her help and we now know how supportive she is being...agree that a quiet word with the midwife is the way to go but if it will help there is an excellent group on facebook for mothers with PND and I think the lady who runs it is also a BF expert...search for Out of the Blues.
