Following the Dai Shi Dai closing down thread, so is Lime Tree, on the 28th at Ibn which is a shame. It was the only decent place to get a sandwich and sit outside. They have relocated to the new place on SZR and their spot is going to be taken over by an Italian restaurant.

American Hustle already sold out. Unfortunately by the time we get to watch it it will be cut to shreds. And why aren't films like Blue Jasmine or Philomena here yet? It is ridiculous that we miss out on so many great films. I know they aren't mainstream blockbusters but honestly, there is an audience here if they'd bothered to show them. Why they can't dedicate a cinema screen at say MOE for just 'arthouse' films?

You will get charged if you use your creditcard. So you have to be careful to select that you wish to withdraw from your bank account not from your credit on your creditcard. I made that expensive mistake a few times when I got my atm bank card mixed up with my creditcard.

Feet First at Town Centre and Ibn are good - new Thai girl at Ibn who has great pressure and the Chinese one is good also. I have asked in the past for 10 to 15 mins reflex at the end and never had an issue. The Relax Thai Spa (one next to Aswaaq supermarket right?) is good, ask for Rose.

I have noticed that this year we have been bitten more than usual by mosquitos. We live in Meadows and it is particularly noticeable late afternoon/early evening. We used to open our doors and windows but I can't do that now as my DD and I react badly to bites. I read in Express last week that the residents in Jumeirah Islands, which is next to us have an infestation due to the surrounding stagnant water. I am covering up and using mozzie spray on my feet when I go out.

We have used MAB in the past. As far as I know, you can only extend the ground floor to the allowable footage of the house but not upstairs eg. you cannot create an extra room using the balcony. You'll need to show your plans to Emaar for approval first anyway. Emaar will also have an approved list of contractors you can contact.

If you are happy to just chill by a pool, relax and read your books then it's fine. Kids have simple needs so they will be happy messing about by the pool. The beach is lovely and clean but unfortunately we were advised from swimming in the sea as the current was too strong. We love our food and it just wasn't up to our standard. I definitely recommend the two places for dinner in town. The tour took us to a lovely wadi, we saw a frankinsense tree, Job's grave, interesting local house, blow hole, pretty coastline, camels. The mountains had a bit of greenery but certainly not lush. It could well have been because we visited over Eid. Don't let me put you off, I had high expectations.

I went to Salalah for 3 nights over Eid and personally have to say we were a tad disappointed. Maybe because friends we spoke to had hyped it up we had high expectations but actually found it quite dull. The Marriott is in 70s time warp and needs a good coat of paint. Hotel food and service was mediocre we ended eating in town and that was just okay (the pizza restaurant and the Lebanese). The two half day tours we did were interesting but because we went over Eid, unfortunately a couple of the museums and places of interest were closed. Perhaps we should have gone during the monsoon season when it is supposed to be really lush. We flew there direct on FZ. I have had a more interesting time in Muscat.

You could try Cascade which is a learning/tuition centre that follows UK curriculum including maths, English for all ages and a few other activities for either a few hours in the am / pm. My DD goes there for a little bit of extra maths and she also does hip hop afterwards. That would work for you in the interim while you are waiting for spaces to be freed up.

I have just bought a Vorwerk, German brand, recently arrived in Dubai. It is brilliant, eco-friendly, quiet, light, great for asthmatics. It also does mattresses as well and it mops and buffs floors, two-in-one! Get Gerlinde to give you a demo before you decide. Mobile: 050 two four five, five eight zero seven. They are not cheap but cost per use and what it can do was worth it for me.

Yes, there is one in JBR called Play A Round. It has a 9 holes indoor glow in the dark crazy course, there is free arts and crafts as well and also something like wii that the kids loved. Coffee shop inside too. You'll need to get them to send you the map as it wasn't that easy to find initially.

I did not realize Kings' had changed management. VictoriaM - the parent survey passcode is in a small envelope from the KHDA which were handed out middle of last week. Or try going to www.khda.gov.ae/parents and see if you can get a pw online. 2 parents I know moved from Kings this year - one said she had complained about the ipad issue re her Y5 DS and was told to accept or take her business elsewhere (!) and another friend has moved her DD after several years there and says that she felt the school celebrates mediocracy and there is a lack of competitive spirit. I would have thought that if a school achieves an outstanding rating from the start it would be much harder to remain in that position and therefore you would work harder to be even better instead of sitting on its laurels. Parents evening next week so we shall see.

I agree w/ you Chewit. My DD is in Y2 at Kings and it's her 2nd year. She enjoys it so I have kept her there. At the time a lot of people I spoke to raved about Kings but for me, I don't seem to be able to put my finger on what it is doesn't feel right exactly. I should trust the KHDA rankings but then again.... However, it seems to have lost its pastoral support and feels v corporate. If you haven't already done so, put any of your comments on the parents survey on the KHDA website of which we were given access yesterday. I have taken issue on: - increasing use of ipads as a tool for teaching (KHDA should set a clear policy and strict guidelines otherwise it is open to abuse by teachers and pupils; cost of ipads being borne by parents; - no dedicated music/art/drama department. - outside music providers teaching during class time - disruptive. If I want extra music lessons it should be in free time not during lessons time. - although Arabic is taught daily I have yet to see my DD show me what she has learned in the last year. I get the sense that because it is a govt requirement schools only pay lip service and attend the lessons and maybe do enough to get by. Waste of time for pupils and boring for the teachers. I am also hearing conflicting info re Nad Al Sheba, I heard it had fallen though as the land right could not be agreed and they were going ahead with just Al Barsha. Sorry to digress and hijack your post VictoriaM - let us know yr decision and how DD gets on if you do indeed move her. Good luck with your decision.

I have. Am treated by Dr Bhatia and would definitely recommend him. Call 04 334 4223. His speciality is also cataracts and he is very thorough and takes time to explain everything. I have seen him for several years and have follow ups every 3 months and once a year he does a comprehensive eye examination to check everything. His office is in building next to Lamcy Plaza, opposite Lemongrass restaurant.

I feel your pain. I don't bother with school photos as my husband takes better ones. School trips at the mo are not too bad as my DD is only in Y2 but I can imagine when they get older and start going abroad that is going to hurt. I was rather annoyed last term as we had to get new swimming costumes and they charged AED150. And they don't fit properly. We have second hand school uniform sale once a month so that helps a bit.

I like it, seems to suit my mature skin. I keep coming back to it after trying out other brands. I use their SPF 30 day cream, night serum which is a gorgeous smelling oil and mix that in with another brand moisturiser, and my fav is the thermoexfoliant which is a face scrub that warms up on your face when you start rubbing in. Essa Beauty Salon in JLT has stacks of samples on their reception desk I'm sure they'd be happy for you to try before you buy.

If you have two children then schools will normally offer kids w/ siblings priority. Try looking on the website www.whichschooladvisor.com which is quite useful. I know Foremarke has opened recently and they are affiliated with Repton. Also, if you get stuck in the interim you could always enrol your kids into Cascade Learning Centre in Jumeirah Lake Towers. www.cascadelearning.ae. They are a tuition centre that follows the British curriculum. My DD has been going there for summer camp and loves it and once an afternoon a week during school time. Don't know if this will help you. http://www.dubaifaqs.com/schools-new-dubai.php Good luck.

aadams, I feel the same as you. I am going to see how things pan out this year. My DD is starting Y2 and they are increasing it from four to five classes per year in Jan 2014. I joined based on its size and pastoral care but now they have turned 'corporate'. I am annoyed they are the last school to go back (even though they finished later) but the late start was supposed to coincide with the opening of the secondary school, which of course was very ambitious and not achievable.
