OK, so it was ridiculously easy and quick! Took me all of about 15 minutes. I needed my passport and visa copies, eye test and current licence and that was it :D.

I don't want to take him to the vet's if possible incase he vomits in the car (like the one DubaiCat found!) Yup, you REALLY don't want that to happen! Did you get anywhere finding his owners yet? PS I still keep meaning to pop round re the SW magazine. I never seem to get anything on my list done these days and I feel terrible when you were so kind to offer :(.

Hi TD I'm seeing Dr Yasser and Dr Khalid at City. Dr Yasser is the plastic surgeon and Dr Khalid the general surgeon. I must remember to ask about quilt stitching tomorrow! I'll post again when I've been :).

I looked up how to bring in medicines on the controlled list when Dad came over before Christmas as he was taking codeine for his back. We'd have had to send his prescription to be translated then attested by the UAE consulate in London, or something like that. He left it at home :).

Yes, DD is three months old and I'll be having the surgery in the last week of March when she's five months. I was referred to a plastic surgeon and a general surgeon by my obstetrician and the plastic surgeon diagnosed the hernia, but I'll see the general surgeon tomorrow as he's the one who will do the hernia repair then the plastic guy will take over to do the muscles and sort out the loose skin. We haven't applied for approval yet as it's too soon but the plastic surgeon says my insurance should cover the hernia repair, time in hospital and all that kind of thing but I may have to pay for the actual tummy tuck procedure during the surgery. He said that's somewhere in the region of 23,000dhs. He did say the insurance might agree to cover it in the end if we argue, but to prepare for a bill.

DD was in NICU at City for four days with hypoglycaemia. She was born at 36 weeks. All the staff seemed very caring in there but firm when they needed to be, such as when some guy claiming to be a baby's uncle was giving them grief about wanting to see the baby and not taking no for an answer (he was booted out, thank goodness). She had awful nappy rash while she was in there, but I'm not sure if that was because her nappy wasn't changed often enough or if she was sensitive to the formula she was given for the hypoglycaemia. The nurses told me they changed her every three hours which I guess is standard. I asked to be called each time she needed feeding if I wasn't already there, and they did this without fail. I also asked for a consultation with a dentist as DD was born with a tooth, and they arranged this for me. I asked to see the paediatrician a couple of times and if I couldn't see him immediately, they called me to come down when he was there. I think my only complaint about the whole time was about an administrative staff member and her utter lack of tact. I was on my way into NICU one day as she was walking in, and she remarked on how much of a tummy I still had after delivery. I wanted to smack her! Like I wasn't fragile enough already :(.

For the ladies who've had this done, was/is your recovery horrendous? Is there much post-op pain and discomfort involved? I'm having it done in March as I have an enormous hernia and the surgeon has said a hernia repair alone won't be enough, so I need the abdominoplasty to make sure the muscles will support the hernia repair long-term. I am, however, absolutely petrified :(.

I needed two photos for the optician. One was stapled to the test result I took away with me, and the other one to the copy in the book :\:. ETA: I may have been able to do both the photos and the eye test at the licence place but I really didn't fancy rocking up there and finding out I couldn't, so I went to the optician first :). <em>edited by DubaiCat on 07/02/2012</em>

I think it's open til something like 9pm DC - I asked when I was renewing registration recently and was surprised how late they said. Super, thanks. I made it as far as getting the eye test today (of course I forgot the photos, so I had to go and get new ones done). I shall report back on the NOC situation when I've been there tomorrow!

Congratulations! It's entirely up to you. In the UK, you'll have an appointment with the midwife to confirm the pregnancy with a urine test (and maybe blood tests if your local health authority is feeling generous and/or there are any signs of problems) and then you won't see anyone until 12 weeks, when you'll have a scan. Here, I had blood tests at 4 weeks with DS but not with DD, and a few scans before 12 weeks with both of them. If you want reassurance that all is OK, go see someone now. But if you're happy to wait until 12 weeks, that's fine too.

You are all wrong. The cooler weather will last until April 4th, when temperatures will gradually start to rise to a comfortable 26c. This will last until April 30th, when summer will finally arrive and we will see temperatures of 30c plus. Thankfully this also coincides with the time my mother in law arrives for her 2 week holiday, thus preventing her from moaning yet again for the fourth year in a row, that Dubai is far too hot for her. Love it! Mine always makes out I've misled her about the weather. I tell her when it's cool enough to come, it usually gets unseasonally hotter just as she arrives, then she complains about the heat like I've personally gone upstairs and turned the thermostat up.

I find it works out better if you put your prices up a bit higher than you're happy to accept, then you can negotiate. But yes, I agree - some of the offers you get are insulting!

Absolutely - if you're OK with it and only worried because 'other' babies are sleeping through, just go with it! For me, I had PND and the sleep deprivation was making this worse so it was a case of fix the sleeping or pack myself off to the nuthouse and do not pass go :D. Lots of mums will tell you what amazing sleepers their babies are, what great eaters they are, how they learned their alphabet by six months. Whatever. Nobody knows except them what really goes on, so take what you hear with a pinch of salt! Just a thought, though. Do you think she's overtired and needs more sleep in the day? I know with DS if he doesn't get enough during the day, he sleeps poorly at night.

For window sunshades, try WindowSox. They're mesh-type shades that fit over the outside of your window and cover the whole thing so no sun sneaks round the sides :). They have a Facebook page and I think I paid 180dhs for two. They come in different sizes for different cars.

Cecile helped us enormously when DS was waking up in the night. For us, a good night was four wake-ups and a bad one was anything up to every 45 minutes. I was a walking zombie. She helped us work out a 'routine' - as in a sequence of events, not a military schedule - for him to follow in the daytime to make sure he got enough sleep, and gave us a plan for how to get him sleeping through the night (without CIO). In three days he was down to a dream-feed and a feed at 4am, a few days after that he was down to just a dream-feed, and at ten months he dropped the dream feed by himself.

Definitely get a second opinion before you make any decisions. I had a terribly itchy rash on my stomach in my third trimester and it wasn't the liver condition although that was the doctor's first concern.

We did it with a 4E (roughly the same layout but smaller). We used a company called OR Tampa or something, and they were beyond rubbish. Cheap at 17k - this was a few years ago, though - but utterly useless and we only ended up paying 12k as they were meant to come back and replace the pathetic quality door they put in the dining room and they never bothered! It was also meant to take three weeks and it took 8.

Just a wee note - the birth certificate you get from Al Baraha isn't a British one, it's a local one. You get an Arabic version and an English version. If you want a British one you'll have to apply for it at the British consulate. I wish I could tell you how to do it but I still haven't got my backside in gear to get them for my two! Must get onto that....
