Wow - congratulations! So it worked first time? She says the success rate at her clinic is something like 70-odd per cent, which I think is high, so hopefully it'll work for her too. I'm not a praying kind of person but I've been having a go recently just in case it might help :D.

You're most welcome. There's nothing worse than a late period when you're TTC and you're still getting BFNs! Did you talk to your doctor to ask if this could happen? The friend I spoke to (she's now doing IVF as it turns out the main issue is with her DH not her) said her doctor never gave her the full story and she'd always end up calling him afterwards to ask a million more questions. She's been through about three doctors now and they're all the same :(.

Its not the culture here, rather the culture with some people here. The belief that the more you work in a corporate setting the better even if you are inefficient started in Far East many years ago, now it has spread to even many Western countries except France and Australia :) There was this Tata Head who complained about British workers being inefficient because they wanted to leave at 6 pm and didnt like to come on weekends. He praised his Indian staff for staying till midnight if necessary I just read that the Indian PM, Manmohan Singh took 1 holiday in 40 years with his family simply because he is a workaholic, IMO That is nothing to be proud of I remember that Tata story. And I absolutely agree - you're seen as a good worker if you're still at your desk at midnight, even if what you're churning out is utter rubbish or you can't do your job properly.

I need to organise that too. Last summer our highest bill was around 1800dhs for a 2-bed in Springs, no grass, small pool (never chilled or heated). Housing fee was 750dhs. This year our tenant's latest bill is 2700dhs, with the housing fee only 313dhs. AS, how much are JWFI charging for the check?

She's been back online googling and says so many women get positives early on, so she's convinced it hasn't worked. I know nothing I could say would make her feel any better but I just feel so useless :(. ETA: Did yours work? I hope so :). edited by DubaiCat on 06/10/2011

I just asked a friend overseas who tried Metformin a while back. She said the first couple of cycles of taking it, her period was late one month and early the next. She didn't have particularly regular cycles before taking it, though :( and her doctor said many of her cycles she didn't actually ovulate.

In newborn mode, the toddler seat is on top, and the newborn kind of slots in underneath on the main seat that unzips to lie flat. It does feel a bit like shoving them in the boot, but hey. Alternatively, you can use the cs adaptor and have newborn facing you on top in the car seat, whilst toddler is in the normal toddler-seat position. The weight of the car-seat means that the buggy remains nicely balanced and really easy to push. They've also brought out a carry-cot, but I don't think it can work with the double set-up. So the main seat unit you'd have if you had only one baby in there goes completely flat, then you attach another seat to the top to put the toddler in? And then you put the baby in from the back?

Our tenant in Springs is having the same problem. I know it's not DSO but it's the electricity that's bumping the bill up and we just can't work out how or why. There's no way she, living on her own and out working all day, uses more electricity than we did when I was home a lot and had the a/c on all the time. I'm utterly stumped.

A close friend of mine in Canada is undergoing her first cycle of IVF. She hasn't had much luck so far, as she got ovarian hyperstimulation with the egg retrieval process and is now doubting the transfer has worked. She did the transfer nine days ago and it was with 3-day-old frozen eggs (I think I got that right). She's done pregnancy tests for the past three days and they're negative, and she says she's seen plenty of women on online forums saying they got a BFP six or seven days post-transfer so she reckons it's failed. Is she just testing too early or is it likely to be negative? Her doctor has told her to go back 17 days post-transfer for the hCG test. Any advice gratefully received. I have no idea what it's like to be in her shoes and I want to help as much as I can.

Hmmm. As far as I was aware, only the first half of your cycle - the follicular phase - can be affected by external factors such as medication (unless you're on a controlled cycle, i.e. IVF). But I didn't look into Metformin as it turned out I didn't actually have proper PCOS. Do you know when you ovulated? And how long your luteal phase is?

I hope it is! I love mine more than I could ever have imagined I could love anyone (and I'm slightly worried about how I'm ever going to love #2 as much) but I need time away from him. I'm just not one of those natural, falling-off-a-log mums who just seem to 'know' what to do with babies and children. To me, raising a child is such a huge responsibility and I regularly feel completely out of my depth. I think a part of my PND was affected by expectations of me shown by other members of my family, namely my Mum! I get the impression she completely gave up her life for the three of us and didn't have a life of her own, and now she thinks we should do the same. I don't think she thinks it because it's the right thing to do - more that she thinks, well, she suffered so we should too! Does that make sense? She makes me feel guilty if I'm not running around after him entertaining him every second he's awake. Staying at hers over the summer completely exhausted me, because if I sat down with a cup of tea and let him play by himself she made it quite clear she thought I was shirking my responsibilities. And as for go out on my own... let's just say I spent over two months there, went for dinner twice and went to the salon once when he was asleep. Hmmm.

I'm pretty sure my DH wonders why I can't just snap out of it too. Another close friend of mine, who saw him while I was home in the UK, said when she brought up the whole PND thing he couldn't change the subject quick enough! I do feel for him but at the end of the day, it is an illness and he needs to man up and be supportive as I'm expected to be every time he has man flu/ebola/the plague or whatever else he gets on a regular basis. As you have a long-term illness, I'd say you definitely need a consultation with a doctor to see if there are any links between it (or the severity of it) and depression, or any contraindications for medication you might be able to take. One thing I did try was St John's Wort (sorry, I'd forgotten about that) and I do think it made a difference. I'm not sure if it was a placebo effect or a real one but I do remember thinking I was starting to feel better after I started taking it. Dr Smylie recommended it. I so hear you about the time to yourself during the day. I know to some it might sound trivial but having an hour or two to sit down, fart about on FB or on here, check emails or whatever, to remind you you're still you underneath being LO's mum, is vital. We never, ever totally switch off from being LO's mum and to me, it's identity theft. Of course they're the most important little things in our lives but we need some downtime just to chill out, relax and wind down. If I think DS is going to sleep for three hours and he wakes after one, I could cheerfully kill someone because I've been cheated out of my me-time. Yet another thing nobody really 'gets', especially not my mother. Last time I complained about this she told me I was a glass-half-empty kind of person! Jeez, thanks, Mum. The lack of me-time is probably even worse for you as any time you do get, you need to sleep. If I've had a bad night with DS and need a nap, I hate that I can't have a nap and me-time. I feel like I'm wasting my me-time by napping, but I'm too tired not to nap. Catch-22.

That's what's so frustratingly hard about the whole situation. What on earth can we do that will have enough effect to stop them doing things like that? No big companies are going to say, "Hey, your treatment of animals is nothing short of appalling. We're not going to give your our business any more." If they did, perhaps those in China who commit such atrocities against animals might be forced to sit up and take notice but I just can't see that happening, especially in this economic climate. Personally I'd like to go over there with a wide range of mediaeval torture devices to use on them and see how they like it.

I think having a solid support network around you, of people who really and truly know what you're going through, is really important. My DH - bless him - is the most amazing bloke but utterly, utterly useless when it comes to my PND. He has no clue. I think, if I'm truthful, he wants to ignore it in the hope it'll go away. As H.A.K says, it's the ones who can normally cope with anything and have that 'Keep Calm and Carry On' mentality who tend to suffer the most, because they're the ones who hate not being able to cope the most and just keep going and going until they crack. I'm the positive one in our relationship and I'm the one who keeps going and going and in the end I just cracked. DH doesn't like to see that - I guess it makes him feel like maybe things aren't as rosy as I always try and reassure him they are, kind of like if I'm losing it then yikes, it must be bad! I have a close friend who had PND after her DD was born and she's a great help to me. She's probably the only person I can really talk to honestly about it and the only one who really understands. Do you have anyone like that? If not, I'm sure loads of us on here will be happy to meet up for a coffee and probably a tear or two. I have been meaning to pop over and bend H.A.K's ear for a while now and it's about time I got my butt in gear!

Hey, if DS had taken a dummy I'd have been all for it and he'd probably still have it! I'm afraid as he didn't I'm probably no help with that side of things, but I know how awful it is when they wake so often :(. ETA: Just saw your reply on the other thread. I'd assess how you're feeling in yourself before you make any decisions about what to do with the dummy - if you're not having a good time of it, it might be an idea to put him to bed with 15 dummies in the cot and try to solve the sleep cue issue later when you're feeling better. x edited by DubaiCat on 04/10/2011

I was behind a 4x4 today going up Umm Suqeim Road towards the Ranches. I could see three or four kids inside, all unrestrained. The van in front of the 4x4 braked suddenly, so the driver of the 4x4 had to brake too. I could see him or her stretch out an arm to stop the child bouncing around in the middle of the back seat from flying forwards into the front windscreen. Now, call me thick, but if you need your arm to restrain your child in this case, WHY DON'T YOU REALISE YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE RESTRAINED IN A CAR SEAT?!

Four months seems to be the magical time when they forget everything they'd previously been doing sleep-wise! DS was down to one feed a night at that age and I thought I was going great guns. Then he started waking more often, until he was waking anything up to every 45 minutes. His sleep cue was me and a pair of boobs. As kiwi says, your DS's sleep cue is his dummy and he can't get back to sleep without it so if it's not there, he's going to ask his manservant to kindly fetch it for him :D. Louder and louder until said manservant complies! If you're planning on letting him keep the dummy, friends have highly recommended the Wubbanub as it's a dummy attached to a comforter and far easier for such a little person to find in the cot. Shove two in there if you think that'll help - my niece used to go to bed with one dummy in her mouth and one in each hand so she'd have a better chance of finding one of them in the night! I would carry on with the dream feed and he should drop that by himself when he's ready. Hopefully he'll soon be able to find his dummy by himself and then won't bother you in the night for help getting it back in. Your alternative would be to try some kind of sleep training so he can get himself back to sleep without needing the dummy, but if you're happy for him to keep the dummy I'd say that would be making it harder for yourself and creating unnecessary stress.
