Do you have any other flights booked for the year? DH's company paid for our summer flights and we're also going home at the beginning of June for a wedding, so we moved our summer outbound flight to the beginning of June and have booked flights UK-DXB-UK in the middle. That way we can take advantage of cheaper flights originating in the UK. Emirates for us in June was 4,400dhs for DS and I, but the way we've done it worked out 3,100dhs instead.

My doctor back in the UK said this is a form of post-traumatic stress and is called 'invasive thoughts' or 'invasive images' where all of a sudden you just get a picture or something in your head. He said it's linked with/part of post-natal depression because it can often happen after a traumatic birth. I was talking about it with some friends last weekend and we all said we'd experienced it, and were all surprised we weren't the only ones! You're right, people may not necessarily want to talk about it or admit it happens to them. And the thought of leaving DS at nursery and physically driving away leaves me in bits... :D. Must man up!

DS was almost 7 months when his cousins all got it and even though they were using him as a plaything, climbing all over him and slobbering on him, he didn't catch it. He must have been exposed to the virus a million times over. Fingers crossed!

We did our own transfer but it was a little while ago, back at the beginning of 2008. It was ridiculously easy! I think you'd better check with the land department to see if things have changed now.

I'm not sure - I didn't think to ask this when we spoke to them. Have you called 2144444? I know that's a bit hit and miss :(. You might have more luck speaking to the airport office staff but I'm afraid I don't know where you can get that number from.

Sleeping his hangover off .. Whilst i was up at half five woken by my lovely 2 yr old dd:@ I was up at five too but it wasn't the small person in the house waking me up. It was the big idiot throwing up everything he drank. No room for hangovers here, though. He is up entertaining DS as I sit and type and will be doing so all day.

I checked with Emirates in the UK at Christmas as DS's cousins all had it and we were concerned he might get it before we came home. They said he wouldn't be allowed to travel if he had any fresh spots on the day, and we might be required to have a clearance letter from the doctor in case the ground staff had any doubts. Thankfully he never got it so we didn't have to test this out!

I remember a cash machine malfunctioning at home in the UK - but doing the opposite and giving out too much - and the bank's explanation was that the person refilling it put the wrong denomination notes in the slots. So, for example, he put GBP20 notes where the GBP10 notes should go. Hope you manage to get it sorted.

From my experience with Cecile, she only advocates an approach that you're comfortable with, so she won't tell you to leave the baby to cry alone in the room - CIO - if you're not comfortable with that. Our solution involved us sitting next to his cot and patting him. He wasn't happy that he wasn't being picked up, but he was not left to cry it out alone. ETA: Perhaps this is just a blip while he sorts himself out with his new routine/sleep training? If you're leaving him to self-settle in the night, perhaps he needs longer naps in the daytime to make up for this until he sleeps through? I know if Will's tired he doesn't sleep as well at night as when he's well-rested from the daytime. It's so, so hard to know what's the best thing to do. I know, it feels like forever at the moment! McB, when you say it depends on what stage the pre-eclampsia developed, do you have any more information on this? I had high BP and protein from roughly halfway through my first pregnancy (I think), then around 34-35 weeks it got higher and worse until 36+6 when my test results deteriorated and I was induced.

I saw Dr Carol Smylie at the Dubai London Clinic Festival City branch. She is lovely; very practical and very understanding. I also like Dr Andrew Devine at City Hospital if you don't mind seeing a man. He's friendly, matter-of-fact and down-to-earth. Dr Smylie recommended I see Dr Sabrina Christensen at the Jumeirah branch of DLC, too. I think she's a psychologist and counsellor. I found her easy to talk to and very understanding. I was adamant I didn't want to take medication and I struggled through for a long time. Now, I'm finally enjoying my baby and my life again - DS is 11 months too - but it's been difficult. Number 2 is due in November and at the first sign of even the smallest hint of PND, I am off to the doctor for whatever they can give me. I know meds are not always the answer but I felt so horrendous, I don't ever want to repeat that experience and I don't care what I have to do to fix it. I guess what I mean is if the doctor suggests medication might help, don't discount it as I did. I live in Springs if you fancy a coffee or a chat at a soft-play area any time.

I'm no expert but it sounds like he might need to start and finish his day earlier. He's around 9-10 months now, right? When we changed DS's bedtime to a little later, we picked a day when he had a particularly long nap in the afternoon so he wasn't too tired to stay up a bit later, so maybe it would work if you picked a day when he napped earlier? Then you could start his bedtime routine earlier, have him in bed by 7/7.30, and then start his day around 7.30am. That's probably not that helpful but I just wanted to post because I know how horribly isolating sleep difficulties can be - you honestly feel as though you're totally on your own and totally helpless to fix the problem. I credit Cecile with solving our sleep issues when DS was 7 months. Now we have the odd blip, but I'm confident I can sort it before it gets too out of hand. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

DS had an allergic reaction to a vaccination, I think when he was either four or six months old. He went for his nap as normal after the jabs and when he woke up, he was covered in huge red welts that got bigger literally by the second. We took him straight to the doctor where he was given antihistamine drops. He had his first dose and went for his next nap, and by the time he woke up the welts were totally gone. His one-year jabs are due next week and I won't hesitate to get them, even after he had a reaction. It was minor compared to what he could catch without the vaccinations.

Hi ladies Just thought I'd update for anyone else reading this thread or interested in Dr Elsa... her next available appointment isn't until October. As my baby is due in November, unfortunately this was a little too late for me to have my first appointment with her! :) Guess I'll keep hunting. Thanks again, Kat Eeeeek, that's ages away! I have also spoken to Dr Braithwaite at the American Hospital and while I didn't meet her in person (I spoke to her through work, but about pregnancy and childbirth) I was very impressed with her manner and approach. She would have been my second choice if we hadn't been able to see Dr Elsa again.

If children are restrained from the first time they travel in a car it becomes normal. Absolutely. They might cry if they don't like it but they'll cry a whole lot more - or not at all, which is probably worse - if they end up scraped across the tarmac in the middle of a shattered windscreen. I mentioned this thread to DH last night and he made a very good point. For the people who have their own seatbelts on but a child unrestrained, point out how dangerous this is for the strapped-in adult/s as well as the child. An unrestrained child is a missile and probably a heavy one at that, and 15kgs of toddler flying at your head at 50km/h is not just going to give you a headache.

Yep, the Ibn Battuta one. I've just taken some jeans in there to be altered. From my experience they're decent, reliable and reasonable. Down the alleyway towards the loos next to Athlete's Foot, then go left through the door that says 'staff only'.

I normally steer clear of these threads as I think it's each to their own. However, I am curious. If you're concerned she might scream the place down, does that not indicate the procedure might cause her pain? And if local anaesthetic is required, does that not mean you're going to have her hurt? I don't mean to offend. I just truly don't understand. I hate the thought of DS being in pain if he has an accident and I can't imagine wanting to hurt him intentionally.

Is feeding a child McDonald's going to result in immediate serious injury or death? In the same way that a road traffic accident involving an unrestrained child would result in immediate serious injury or death as they were flung around the vehicle like a rag doll or worse, flung out of the windscreen? Didn't think so. Each to their own as to whether you should approach parents or not. But if they genuinely didn't know that their child should be restrained and by telling them you then saved that child's life in a subsequent accident, is that not worth it?

My brain is mush. It is bedtime for me. But, I feel like mine were all in it pretty early. Way before they were jumping and wild. Both boys rocked in it with their little feet and rested there heads forward on the soft seat. Both boys also refused the swing... so in desperation I improvised with another comfy place for them to entertain themselves. Maybe my age remembrance is off... sorry if it is. Babies do that to you :D. Mine is 11 months and I'm already struggling to remember what he did at eight weeks old!

On my way home from Ibn Battuta tonight, I saw some idiot woman driving along with a child, probably about six years old, in the front passenger seat. No seatbelt on, leaning forward onto the dash. The driver had her seatbelt on. Sadly she didn't stop at the lights when I did, because I would have loved to hear her answer as to why the child didn't need a seatbelt and she did. Redlesley, you have mail re the stickers - if you need me to dish them out down my end of town I'm happy to do so.

DS - 11 months - loves it but we have had concerns about safety issues. DH noticed their smoke alarms were covered up, exits were left open and older kids were allowed into the toddlers' area and trampled the smaller ones. They have since put a latch on the front gate, which is much better. Having said that, the soft play area at Magic Planet is far worse. Rubbish everywhere, foam coming loose from the fittings and torn equipment. At least Mini Monsters is clean and new.

DS loved his Jumperoo! The only thing is, though, the packaging says babies should be around four months old and holding their heads up before they use it (or it might even be six months, but I'm pretty sure DS was in his at four or five months).

Thanks :D. SunDevil, do you mind me asking how much you paid for them? I'm pretty sure DH said his friend paid around 1,000dhs for the one he has so 40 quid sounds cheap. Having said that, if you can get them for 40 quid in the UK, I'll wait a couple of weeks and get one over there! Dumb question - is TB terabyte? And how many movies does 1TB/2TB store? Ta.

I well remember those feelings myself. New mums can be under so much pressure, especially out here with - often - no family around for support. I think we're our own worst enemies sometimes. Us, and the authors of these bl00dy awful books. Try searching for the Fairy Godmother Club on FB. They organise meet-ups with young mums and older ladies (as in older than the mums, not 'old'!) whose families are back at home and it's a great way to get out and meet other mums and potential support networks.

I don't think LT meant to be mean at all. I know when DS was tiny I read as many books as I could get my hands on, because I felt totally and utterly lost and bewildered by it all, and it made me even more ridiculously insecure and unsure of myself. In the end my Mum told me to stop worrying so much and just get on with it. At the time I thought she was being unsympathetic, though! I did feel as though lots of other mums were taking their babies to this class, that class and the next class - which made me question if I was doing the right thing by not taking DS - but in the end we preferred to visit friends with babies, meet up in coffee shops and just spend time together. We do the same now, although we've added in soft play areas now he's bigger, and he's a happy, well-adjusted little man. It's so hard in this heat. You basically have a choice of coffee shops and malls, or organised classes which are often expensive for what babies get from them. I think Mini Monsters have a few classes organised now, but I'm not sure of the age groups. Two hours isn't much daytime sleep for 8 weeks old. Or, more to the point, it isn't much me-time for you. It seems we really can't have it all - they either sleep all night or all day! Little s0ds just like to keep us on our toes :D.

DH's friend has this box thing that stores downloaded movies. He thinks it sounds like the best thing since sliced bread. Does anyone have any idea a) what one of these things is; b) where you can get one from; and c) how much one is? Thanks. I'm a bit fed up of him banging on about it.

Some people just don't get it. I've had people tutting and telling me DS 'must be hungry' because he's screaming his head off in a queue somewhere. I'm always really tempted to say, "Yeah, I expect he is. I deliberately haven't fed him today." Ask them if they a) have any helpful suggestions or b) want to take over. That should send them packing!
