We both saw a GP first but I only ever had one referral and that's when I was working for Emirates so I needed that in order to be covered under their insurance. DH saw the GP at City who then referred him internally, and then for my second op I went straight to Dr Al Shunnar without a referral. ETA: I think I probably just confused you. What I meant to say was no, you don't need a referral! :D edited by DubaiCat on 16/01/2011

In the past I have seen and been very happy with Dr Al Shunnar at the American Hospital. DH sees Dr Sarwat at City and is also very happy with him. We've both had surgeries for different back issues. ETA: I hope he gets it sorted :). edited by DubaiCat on 16/01/2011

I'm reading that book too and it makes a lot of sense. I so hear you with the DH thing - "But he's smiling and happy!". Yeah, he's smiling and happy now, but give him two seconds and try to change his nappy and see how smiling and happy he is then! Berks, the lot of them. I think that's one of the key mistakes we make as new parents; we see a smiling, happy baby and we don't want to put them to bed because they're smiling and happy and we don't want to deprive them (or us) of fun time. We don't realise we're missing that golden opportunity to put them down when they're most able to go to sleep, and that we're not actually being unkind in putting them down for a nap - we're doing them a favour! Re finding time to do things, I've found this week that I have far more time to myself now he naps better and longer in the daytime. OK, so I can't go and get groceries, but I can do that with him in the afternoon when he wakes up from his midday nap. When I'm in the house with him I can get the washing and all that done. I can't really explain it but this past week, with him napping properly in the day, I've just felt like I've had so much more time to get things done.

That sounds far easier than having to make them up as you need them! It's OK with just the two feeds at night but I don't fancy it when every feed is formula. Thanks!

She says every baby is different so it's hard to give a 'one size fits all' solution, but the key thing that seems to have made a difference to us is that he can only stay up for an hour and a half to a maximum of two hours in between naps. So, when the time comes for a nap or for bed at night, he's tired but he's not overtired and he is able to get himself off to sleep. Also, we do one or two bottle feeds in the night now, instead of me demand-feeding him every time he wakes up. It seems he had developed the habit of needing me and my b00bs to get back to sleep. We did have to do a kind of sleep training but again, it's different for every baby so you'd need to work out what will suit yours. For us, we could use anything to soothe him without picking him up - the first night it took us an hour and a half to get him to sleep, then next night 20 minutes and since then he's been going down every time with no fuss. I know you're going away but it might well be worth seeing her quickly before you go if she can fit you in. I wish I'd done that before I went home in December, because I just ended up making it a thousand times worse for myself while I was away. Good luck and I hope you get it sorted. I know first-hand how hard the sleep deprivation is and how hopeless you can feel. ETA: We're currently trying to identify what his individual 'tired but not overtired' cues are. Because I've been so exhausted I haven't been able to notice or remember them - or, more likely, I haven't realised what they were - so then he's been getting ridiculously overtired and has then been incapable of getting himself off to sleep. Common tired cues are sneezing and hiccuping but as yet I'm not sure what the rest of ours are! edited by DubaiCat on 16/01/2011

Dubai Cat, I know you and your husband used to walk the dogs yourself, but is it your dogs who are being walked by an Ethiopian maid now and have been for a while? She takes really good care of your pair, but I've seen her walk with another Ethiopian maid who lets the dog she is looking after walk out on the road in front of our car. More than once. Remonstrating with her has made no difference and we have almost hit the dog before now. Maybe you know the owner and can speak with them? Nope, we still walk them ourselves (sadly no room for a maid in this house!). But I do know of the pair you're on about - I'll ask DH if he's seen them recently or knows how we could get hold of the owners. What kind of dog is the one being allowed into the road? ETA: Thanks for that, marycatherine. I would definitely consider raw if we had the space for another freezer but it's a squash with all of us in here as it is! :) edited by DubaiCat on 16/01/2011

I haven't been able to find Aptamil follow-on milk in cartons or I'd have been down that route from the get-go :D. Part of the reason I've only started formula now is that I'm bone idle!

I read all the natural birthing books and convinced myself my birth would be wonderful. Drug-free, pain-manageable, enjoyable... hmmm. I had a medicalised birth from the start with a horrendous ending, and I think having convinced myself it would be all candles and Kumbayah beforehand only made it worse. If I wasn't so terrified of my doula (I know she's going to read this :D) I'd be having a C-section next time round. I don't doubt for a second that mental attitude has a great deal to do with how your birth goes, to a certain point. But sometimes no matter how mentally prepared and positive you are, it doesn't go to plan. Read all the books you want and take them on board, but be prepared for anything to happen - that's probably the best plan!

I am new to formula making as I've just started using it for night feeds. It says on the tin feeds must be used within an hour of being made - so is it OK to keep them in the fridge for a few hours? I must admit I've been hopelessly confused by the whole thing as I've had so many different instructions from so many different people!

We have two golden retrievers and kennels for them when we're away are the biggest expense. They stayed in kennels for almost three weeks over Christmas and it was over 3,000dhs (if I remember rightly). They are a lot of work and a big responsibility! Two good walks a day, lots of attention and did I mention fur all over the place?! But we wouldn't be without the big oafs :D. We use the municipality vet and it's very reasonable. The only thing I've found they don't do - so far - is the kennel cough vaccination, which they need before they go to the kennels, and it's around 250dhs per dog at the private vets. One of ours is allergic to loads of things so finding food for him was a challenge. Luckily for us, one he isn't allergic to is one we get in Geant, and it's much cheaper than the brands you can buy in the vets. He used to have Eukanuba and it set us back 250dhs a big bag. Turned out it was giving him itchy bits too.

I would recommend seeing Cecile de Scally. I was close to a total breakdown, with DS waking anywhere up to every 45 minutes at night, and he now wakes twice - if that - and naps brilliantly during the day. It's taken us a week and at no stage have we left him screaming in his room. So good to hear things are going well for you DC!! Cecile is an amazing woman...so passionate about helping families. She is indeed and I wish I'd gone to her months ago!

Mine came back a few weeks after the post-partum bleeding ended. Yeah, thanks for that! And as if that wasn't enough, they are now horrendously painful and ridiculously heavy. I am waiting for someone to jump out and say, "Hey, you've been had!" - I honestly feel like nature's having a laugh with my body since I got pregnant and had a baby! And ETA: I used to have cycles between 28 and 35 days long and periods of only three days max. I had a period on December 10, and another one started on December 31 and went on for ten days. Thank you yet again, body. edited by DubaiCat on 14/01/2011

Yes, I think you might be right (and I know I'm lazy!). Do many nurseries have waiting lists? I hadn't even considered doing this before now so I haven't a clue what I'm doing but Cecile suggested we put DS in for two or three mornings a week by the time he's one so I'm doing a bit of research now. PS plumie, that's not naughty at all. It's highly recommended for new mums and I wish I'd done it! I got out of my PJs to go walk the dogs with Will and I am now back in them on the sofa while he sleeps :D.

I'm sure I've read that those wedge things either side may not be the best thing as they can pose a suffocation risk but then I'm so sleep-deprived I could have dreamt that. I'll try to find some evidence if I get a second. DS did this, right after we finally managed to get him back on track after a visit to the UK. Hs doctor recommended as much tummy time as possible so he developed the ability to roll back, and it worked. I can't remember how long it took but not too long. Good luck! I know how awful endless broken sleep is.
