Hi I'm in Springs 15. There was quite a lot of water logging on the actual rainy day, in some places half way up the car tyres. Since then water outside has receded quite a bit, mostly all gone except a few places where the road is uneven - just drive a bit more carefully through those. We had a couple of puddles of water seeping inside where the window frames had gaps, nothing too drastic - whether your house was affected will depend on how well the landlord has maintained it. In a nutshell, life is pretty much back to normal. Enjoy the rest of your holiday!

What do you use to line drawers and cupboards? My usual go-to is a sprinkle of boric powder to keep creepy crawlies away, then layer of newspaper on top - functional but definitely not stylish! I tried Ikea drawer liners but they just move around all the time. Any other ideas?

Hi you could try LCT Uniform in Karama. They have fabric, tailors and can even copy embroidered logos. Google them to get location details.

If your day is packed, perhaps you need to find ways to "unpack" some parts of it so you can use the freed up time for exercise. Consider a car pool with a friend or neighbour for the school run. Dubai is brilliant for being able to outsource one of more of your daily tasks (if you're happy to) - cleaning, laundry, ironing, cooking, childcare, driving....but caring for our own body is unfortunately still our own job!

Poor little mite! I second cool wet towels on forehead and soles of the feet. Or even a cool shower/ bath. Just keep him cool - don't be tempted to cover him up too much.

Thanks, can't see any in their catalogue. Will drop in to the store as well. Just to clarify, by recliner I meant the ones where there is a pull out/ push in leg rest (and not the ones which one seat is extended to make a sort of L-shape sofa). edited by dubaiwithonlychild on 03/05/2015

I know not everyone likes recliners, but I love my comfort! Have been looking around, and the only places I can find them are the likes of Home Centre and United Furniture - when you look closely their quality and finish is a bit lacking, but they will be my go-to if I can't find any other option. Does anyone know where I can buy good quality 3 and/ or 2 seater reclining sofas?

Look at O-Cake-sions on FB. The lady (it's not me!) makes lovely moist homemade cakes.

I'm not Muslim but am in a similar relationship. I am the daughter of a scientist, complete non-believer but my husband is very staunchly religious, prays every day, fasts on certain days and so on. For both of us it was a shock as ours was an arranged marriage. We argued a lot in the initial days, however over the years we have learned to respect each other's point of view and also reach a middle ground. He is less rigid about faith and realizes that following the underlying concepts is more important than following the rituals. I on the other hand never stop him, and in fact facilitate his prayers etc by cooking special meals on special days, maintaining the cleanliness of his prayer area, joining him in fasting on the bigger events (2-3 days in a year). We have a little one, who is learning both sides of the story, and will be able to choose for himself when he grows up. Religion is strongly interlinked with culture and by learning a bit about our religion he will learn about his own culture and roots as well, which is important to both of us. Sorry to ramble on, the bottomline is that it can work so long as you are both open minded and willing to respect each other, and not force each other into anything. Like everything else in marriage, it's all about mutual love and respect. Good luck!

Thanks all. Now a location question. We are currently in Bur Dubai. DH office in Garhoud, DD school in Oud Metha. Where would you recommend, bearing in mind I am a new-ish driver? We currently pay 170 for a 3 bed apartment. We could stretch a little more for the right place, of course anything cheaper is a bonus! Nice play areas, cycling tracks, playgrounds etc for DD would be a must. What do you suggest?

I have been considering investing in one as well. Would it clean the grooves between floor tiles and also the bathroom wall tiles? Also how quickly can you clean with it - do you have to go sloooowwwly like a carpet washer or can you whizz around like a normal vacuum cleaner?

lol at 'This isn't Kansas'! Fortunately or unfortunately we stay in apartments so deal with a management company rather than the landlord himself. We're really keen to move from Bur Dubai to a prettier part of Dubai, perhaps with nicer play areas etc for kids. So we just need to stop telling estate agents that we'll view the property now but only sign up if it's still available in Dec? Sounds a roundabout way of doing things! We'll probably have a month's overlap this way, but worth a try in my opinion. Thanks Izzy.

Not sure about disposable bottles. But when my daughter was a baby, I carried her normal bottles and Milton sterilising tablets with me while travelling. Just soak the bottles in water to which a tablet has been added, and afterwards use without rinsing.

Love the idea of sharing professional advice for free. How about volunteering at Mother Teresa orphanages - I have been to a couple and they are doing amazing work. Just wanted to add (in response to some of the previous posts) that not all Indian men spit on roads or mistreat their wives or other women - rather few actually, that too the less fortunate men (ie less educated). Let's not make such generalisations by nationality, caste, colour, race etc. Good generalisations, on the other hand, I am all for...like Italian men are hunks, European women are very stylish, French cuisine is awesome :-)) edited by dubaiwithonlychild on 08/10/2014

Watching with interest. I use Filmon quite heavily at the moment. But you can't catch up already telecasted stuff on it, as far as I can tell. Would prefer to avoid vee pee ens as my experience with them wasn't great. Please suggest which torrent sites are good for iplayer etc.

Lots of good ideas here, thank you. In the spirit of simplicity (and economy!) will first try the olive oil on face at night, and also coconut oil in the shower. Ladychoco - after putting on olive oil at night, do you moisturise at all in the morning? Chrissy23 - do you mean first cleanse and rise in the shower, then put on coconut oil, then finally rinse off?

Going back to UK for a few weeks in the school holidays, and at a loss what to buy as gifts. From the Middle East, I am guessing dates, nuts, saffron etc would be fairly neutral presents (as against perfumes etc which are quite personal and easy to go wrong)? Please suggest which ones to buy as there seem to be a huge range and variety out there - looking for good quality mid-priced stuff. Suggestions welcome!

Oh I can drive alright, been driving for ages, just a bit intimidated by the traffic and other side of road driving, and the fact that I've never driven an SUV before...so taking a handful of refresher lessons. And I would never ask for a lift unless voluntarily offered, in any case I am yet to find anyone who lives where we do in Dubai :-D Yes you are right, the nationality issue might be in my own head, but other playground occurrences aren't, unless my DD is making up tales. Again with sports, it's not that we are discouraging her, it was her teacher's observation that she is in the lower level groups in sports and she's struggling to accept that idea. Yes we are continuing with the sports stuff because she needs the exercise and the confidence. Was in any case planning to wait for Sept entry, maybe we'll wait it out and see how things develop.

Thanks everyone for reassuring me that this is probably more down to the big move, and the school/ my DD should be given more time. Have already done most of the things - after school clubs and classes, spoken to teacher, try and make it to school gates off and on, volunteer for school events, commenced refresher driving classes, organised a whole class birthday party for DD, organised her first play date, member of DESS mums FB and so forth. There have been couple of rather unpleasant incidents on the playground that DD has told me of, so I will still keep an eye on things, and I have already raised this with the teacher. It is heartbreaking to see her go through this, and I appreciate those of you who have offered kind words. Fingers crossed!

No Indian schools, I have nothing against them but I don't see it as a solution at all - are you suggesting it because of her 'colour' Lolacat? She's already doing after school clubs, ballet, swimming classes. Did my post imply I don't want her to do any sport? She was fine with the level of sport at her UK school, which was an 'Outstanding' ranked state primary. At DESS it's been cranked up a couple of notches. I definitely want to keep sports in her life, enough to challenge her and push her, but not to the extent of overwhelming her. "What do you expect?" I expected it to be easier at this age rather than later, obviously I was wrong :-(

No it's not just you :-) unfortunately I was born without that gene! Jokes apart, it's harder for me to take a call as DD is on the school bus (need to sort out driving here soon!) so I don't get to see her in the school environment much.

Agree it's a personal choice, I think my dilemma is - if I move her now am I being hasty, and not giving it enough time? - if I let her stay another term, another year...am I just prolonging her agony? JAPS will be too far (DH office in Garhoud). Repton, Formarke very expensive, and while do-able will mess up our financials. I heard about the new Kings campuses too - may be worth exploring, especially as then DD won't be in a place where she's trying to make a place for herself in already established groups.

We moved from UK to Dubai in Jan this year and were over the moon that 6yo DD was offered a place at DESS. 3 months on, we aren't so sure. She seems unhappy. From the bright, outgoing, bubbly girl she used to be, she's turning introverted and shy. Her teacher says she's doing well academically but is too shy to make friends. DD says she rarely has kids to play with, is often told "sorry I'm playing with xyz" and is only included when they need an additional person. At home as well, we are yet to find friends for her (and me!), so it's a bit lonely. Part of her school problem is that she is not the least bit sporty and DESS seems to be quite sports oriented - which is a good thing, but it seems to be giving her a bit of a complex. Each time there is an event (Sports Day, House Day, Swim Gala etc), we get a constant refrain of "I don't want to go, I am not good at swimming/ running..." Not sure if this could be a factor, but she is the only British Indian child in the class - the others are predominantly English or European. Not sure if it's an issue of cultural fitment. She went to an outstanding state school in UK where it wasn't an issue, but I am realizing that these dynamics work differently in Dubai. I recognize that many of these may just be settling in issues. However I am wondering if we should consider other schools for next year, while she's still not too 'invested' in this school. DD is quite academic, loves reading, board games, puzzles etc, not really interested in horsing around like most other 6yo's. What would you do? Leaving a place at DESS will brand me as a nutcase forever, won't it?
