Yes, you can start now. Just remember, summer is around the corner so since the plants would not be mature, you need to make sure there is no direct sunlight (best keep indoors near a window) and keep the soil moist. Happy growing :)

I am growing Tomatoes, Cabbage and Lettuce with a laundry list of other vegetables and fruits and herbs. Super easy to grow as long as you pop by everyday :) and have a quick looksie on how they are doing and constantly harvest, fertilize and prune them. In summers, I keep all of them in partial shade and water twice a day just to keep the soil moist. I do not really buy seeds, but just germinate or regrow from kitchen scraps. Cabbage and lettuce can be regrown from root (place root in a water bowl and change water every 2 days, transplant into a pot once you can see a few roots and new leaves from top). Tomato seeds germinate easily when dried and sprinkled over soil (just cover seeds with soil and never use a hose but a spray bottle to moisten soil till they germinate)

It's absolutely possible. Even with grown dogs. Currently, we are do the introductions with 2 feral kittens we rescued and 3 dogs (1 desert mix, 1 GSD, 1 GSD cross). We keep 2 dogs in a crate and let the kittens roam free in the house for about an hour. We have kept the kittens in a bedroom the whole day and have put up a big metal gate (fixed to wall) for their safety, and the dogs see them the whole day n kittens see the dogs. We treat the dogs every time they display calm behavior (not heavy breathing, not barking, not joking, not whining). It's come to a point where our GSD now gets a chance to sniff n lick the kittens and they the same. Slowly in time it will get better but when we are ready for the next phase (meeting out of the crates but on leads) we shall put muzzles on them for everyone's safety. Basically the dogs need to become bored of the kittens. It's always best to bring a kitten into a home of a puppy, they grow together and less work. If a dog is hyper, still no problem, just crate or muzzle it depending on their size. There are lots of YouTube videos to help with the transition.

Cats / kittens are lactose intolerant. So no need for milk, they will only have loose poop around. We feed our 2 kittens a raw diet only of chicken, liver, bone, lamb, beef and weekly fish. Since your kitten is about 3 months, it's best to feed them 4 times a day. Cats are self regulators so when they are full, they will just stop eating and walk away.

Whenever they do an accident in an unwanted place simply ignore them and immediately clean the place ( no verbal communication at all).

2dogs, this is a common cry with a lot of dog owners. Solution is simple, but you need to spend time working n observing your dogs / dogs. Never give free reign to your dog for doing their business. Always mark spots where they are allowed to go to. Personally I use the click n treat method. Keep the doggie flap door closed ( training period only) . Keep both dogs inside with their harnesses n you should keep their leads on you at all times. The moment they start trying to go out (tapping the flap door or head butting) put them on the lead (keep a hand full of high value treats like boiled chicken or sausage with you at all times) and head straight to the designated area. Hang with them ( could take 5 mins to half hour) and the moment they poo there, immediately start praising and once done immediately click n treat. If in half hour nothing happens, go back indoors or just let them play. You would need to do this at least 10 times during the entire day. Once they have associated the designated area with yummie treats (do not give these treats for any other good behavior during this training period as the value decreases) you could then let them go by them selves (still keep the doggie flap door closed / sealed) but again, keep the same treats with you and praise once they are doing their business n click n treat. Do this for a good month or more as this way you condition the dog to use an area only and he associates it with good things. Note, fade out the treats slowly and keep the praise going. Wash the areas where the dogs peed earlier with vinegar or any Eco friendly liquid detergent ( ammonia free as dogs urine contain ammonia) and its even better to use a black light to do a through clean. No matter what age your dogs are, they still have potential to learn n once they do, stays with them forever. Dogs also display unwanted behavior if their needs are not met ( high energy dogs) like exercising, playing ball or frisbee. So it's very important to play n interact with them so they do not show unwanted behavior.

Please try not to shave your dog as every dog need their coat not just for warmth but also to cool themselves and protect them from the sun's UV rays. Change the diet (try a raw diet) add more omega 3 and flax seed oil to their food, use the furminator every 3 to 4 weeks (everyday use causes the skin to dry fast), vacume your home daily, train them to lay off the furniture and brush them everyday without fail.

Suzimack, We drove every day around our targeted areas and every sign we saw "for rent, direct from landlord" we called. We called for places that were mansions lol (7 bkh villas) and spoke with the LL's who gave us numbers of their relatives who had 3 bkh villa's. We even kept a close look on dubizzle and gulf news and every direct from landlord listing we called (even if the place was over our budget). Within a good 2 weeks we had LL's calling us so guess the word had spread. I would call every LL's who asked me to call back or knew someone who had a place without any hesitation. Today, I find many families driving around the area we moved into and are either slipping papers sheets with their details and requirement or stopping every person they see outside a villa and inquiring, guess they are really have a few days left to find a new home. But if you can just call every to let sign which is directly from LL, you can eventually find a place.

It is amazing what greed can make people do.... and i agree with the "fake jump" bit. There has been an increase of 20-30% in some parts of Dubai. However, many agents and landlords are beating a drum of "oh my god, rents increased by 50%, they will double in this year, quadruple in 3 years" edited by Arch on 06/02/2013 You would be surprised how fake these prices really are. We were looking for a 3 bhk independent villa. All agents (which mainly include the top agencies) quoted unreasonable prices for places like barsha south, al quoz south, al warqa and even places like khawaneje and al mizhar (were were not fussy with the location as we needed a minimum 15K sqft plot for our dogs and cats to play). All the quotes for these places were not less then AED 150K to 175K and most of these places had no proper road access nor any groceries etc. We got frustrated with these agent who kept telling us "Oh the prices are going to increase next week" or "We have a ready client for this price", so we decided to chuck all these "GREEDY" agents and find one ourselves through LL's directly. Took us 3 months (we started early) and we networked ourselves with lots of LL's and eventually, we had LL's calling us. We found a fantastic villa in Al Barsha 2 which was everything we were looking for and paid AED 110K only, while we were quoted by various agents for the same villa AED 165K in the past. After speaking to various LL's most of them do not like giving their properties to agents as they do not want to pay a commission to the agent nor do they want to do all the work for the agent (such as showing the villa, etc) and then paying agents to do nothing. Our LL met us at a typing center and we drew up our contract as per Dubai Municipality and have even registered this property with Ejari now. After moving into our new home, I find a lot of people doing what we have done. Everyday I meet people searching for villa's and are either stopping people when they are outside and asking if we are moving or we know of any other villa in the vicinity for rent so they can get the LL's direct contact. 3 months later, the same villas we had seen, are still in the market, prices are reducing slowly (but still high) and every-time an agent calls me now, I give them a piece of my mind as they deserve it.

SunDevil, it seems like your LL is greedy and the fact that he has not reimbursed you only makes it worse. So he has given you 12 days, I say, find a new property, but open a case with RERA so you can get more the 12 days to find a new home. Do not give into greedy LL's. Thanks to this fake jump in rental prices, a lot are downsizing, so this LL will have to sit and wait for a good 2 to 3 months for a new tenant which indirectly makes him lose. Have seen this way to often happen with such kinds of LL's.

How old are your dogs? how big in size are they? Some times just the daily walks and cuddles are not enough. Some dogs who are high energy, need the play time with balls, frisbees or runs. If they do not get it, they either become destructive or show unwanted behavior like urinating in unwanted places. It's always best to give your dogs certain areas to do their business. Click and treat everytime they do it there, ignore if they do it anywhere else. Once a dog learns he has his place, he will never have an accident anywhere else, in fact, our dogs when on walks, do not even pee outside, but when we bring them home, they all run off to the various marked spots and do their business. Clean the areas with either a all natural (eco friendly) detergent or a simple solution of baking soda and white vinegar (diluted) and do not use any commercial detergents as they contain ammonia which attracts dogs to continue peeing there more as dogs urine contain ammonia too.

My DH suffers from IBS. Today it's very controlled and he eats everything. He starts his morning with a fruit and vegetable juice, lunch consist of only home made food with lots of veggies, dinner is salad with a small meal. He introduced natural RAW fruits and veggies into his diet which he never did earlier. He eats everything under the sun :) and has no problem unless he eats the odd meal outside, but is not as bad as his past. A high fiber diet has helped him. Everyone is different so it's best to figure out what works for you.

I second louisedvs on this. Avoid agents as they are all the same, charge for making you do everything sadly and do not negotiate rates at all when in truth, most landlords are willing to negotiate rates so get a direct landlord deal always. Plus agents always over quote. Serviced apartments can offer you some good deals if your stay will be over a month with them. The Marina is always expensive but you could look at tecom or al barsha where you could get really good deals as these places are filled with service apartments.

Hi Ecochic, My husband and I are considering this option, but we are concerned that the garden has to be leveled... this is the only reason so far (and the complete lack of time) we did not do it yet. The landscapers are asking from 3 to 10K! :-) and it is the same case a matchbox size yard... Sorry for the ignorance, but where or what is warsan? The landscapers who did our neighbors yard, never used any device to level the ground, just 2 guys and a tool and they leveled it. it was all done by judgement. we went to ace and picked up a wooden square tall pole and used that to level our ground. we did it over the weekend (took a day and half- first day we soiled and manured the ground and later watered it and let it sit overnight, next day we placed our carpet grass and that took half day with loads of smoke n juice breaks :) we also planted a good bit of trees all bought for less then 10 dhs each. location to warsan https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=location+to+warsan+nursery+in+dubai&fb=1&hq=warsan+nursery&hnear=0x3e5f43496ad9c645:0xbde66e5084295162,Dubai+-+United+Arab+Emirates&cid=0,0,15035885291102437389&ei=Cm0GUf7FJYrEsgbNzoCACQ&ved=0CEAQrwswAA

Honestly the best way is to do it yourself. Cheap and cheerful and better then what these landscapers charge. Go to warsan and pick up what plants you are looking for. I remember, our last villa, we did our own lawn. While the landscapers quoted 3k (for a matchbox size yard), we did it in under 1K.... soil and manure included :) and all by ourselves and had lots of fun doing it.

The Al Warqaa villa's are sure lovely. We were on our house hunt over the past 3 months and really wanted to live in warqaa as it's out of the city for us. The main reasons why warqa villa's are cheap is because, of no roads and most villas are stil incomplete and without a dewa connection and agents are advertising because the owner needs money to finish things, but sadly, things like dewa take a good 2 to 3 months for new lines so it's kinda troubling. Another big big problem with warqaa and certain other parts of dubai, we came across realestate companies who were doing property management of the said villa and wanted all cheques under their companies name, They had no power of attorney from dubai courts, nor did they have any legal (dubai courts stamped) documents stating they were an authorized company for property management. If any company wants to do property management, the governments ask for a huge amount ranging in million and above to be deposited with them to gain this license which all these companies did not have. Sadly, 3 months later, I've moved into my new villa and settling in while the same villa's we saw back when we were on the hunt are still in the markets. Prices have reduced, but no takers. Another thing to watch for is maintenance, a lot of them were passing the buck on the tenant and were still charging high rates.

ecochic, do you make your own fertilizers? If so, how please? I've just got a tray of basil, red chillis, green chillis and rosemary germinating. Thank you :) Yes, I do. I follow my grandma's recipe for fertilizers. She has been successfully growing her fruit n vegetable garden for over 40 years now. I use a simple plastic thrash can (large size from ace) where I drop in some soil and then daily add scrap from cooking such as fruits n vegetable peels, cores (no seeds), egg shell (I powder it in the grinder), dried leaves (from garden) Un used cooked rice, bread, cornmeal, ash from the BBQ (we use natural wood), used coffee grinds and tea leaves (only twice a week I add both as too much will make it acidic). I do mix water which I've used to clean fish n sea food. I generally keep this mix going for a good month to mature. Once it's ready, I always dig up top soil and put the fertilizer and then cover with soil again. Must say, it's really easy and my wet waste is always recycled. I always follow up with a neem leaf spray on the ground. Neem acts as a pesticide and keeps unwanted pests away. I soak a bunch of neem leaves overnight in hot water and next day blend into a paste and then add the same water to dilute it. Pet friendly and organic pesticide. edited by ecochic on 27/01/2013

The moment you bring it home transfer it into a larger pot with a good quality soil. Give it enough water and do not water again unless the soil gets dry. For fertilizer, I use only cows manure and egg shell powder along with occasional mulch from veggies n fruits. In the winters give basil lots of sun as they love it. Summers, indirect sunlight and everyday watering. Balconies are just as fine too. edited by ecochic on 26/01/2013

one way to stay positive is to surround yourself with positivity. The first thing i did way cancel all my newspaper suscriptions and cable TV. No more death and war and sadness stories. I then started to look deeper within my friend circle and started to distance myself from people filled with negativity and have kept the happy and positive people only in my life. started eating healthier (no take outs) and felt wonderful. meditation also has helped a lot. Today, 4 years down the line, I must say, from what i was and how i lived to what i have become and how i live, i am very happy and content. I do have my crazy days of negativity but luckily DH is always there to remind me to look at that situation as either a lesson to learn or just a situation which needed to be acknowledged and to move on. What did get me into this was the book 'The Secret' and now a days i listen to eckhart tolle and a bit of osho. there are soo many books / authors / speakers etc out there but if you want to truly feel happy you will automatically draw like minded souls into your life. it's a great feeling :)

We are a family of 2 adults, 3 dogs (2 large and 1 medium) and 2 cats. We budget AED 5000/- per month and every month end we always have a lot extra remaining :) but then again, I buy all my meats in bulk (feed the dogs and cats raw so have to and just rob some meat from their daily allotments) also buy groceries like rice, flour, toiletries etc in bulk and store it, so end up buying them only 4 times a year. We grow a lot of fruits, veggies and herbs and also make my own cleaning detergents. we hardly go out but do entertain friends and family on a regular basis, but again, all meals are prepared home and rarely do we eat out. We just buy what is required and dont feel the need to cross this budget. Whatever remains, either save it or buy clothes if required. I still feel we can reduce this amount... lets see how it goes :)

I feel you need to spend some time working with your baby and cat. It's best to start early and to avoid any unwanted circumstance. it's best to make sure at-least one parent is always around when both baby and cat are together. While your baby may take a while to understand, cats do understand easily and can be trained. Instead of rehoming your cat, work with it. it's also a great way for your baby to see you and the cat in training and it will lead to your child having lots of respect for animals. This is a major cause for most animals in the uae. People never think of the future before taking on an animal and then it's the poor animal that always suffers. Please think of the suggestions above and if need be, separate the two when you are busy with household work but please work with it instead of giving up as giving up is not a solution at all. I believe that the Paws pet planet owner, Michelle is also a cat behaviorist. Speak to her please for help.

We just moved into a 3 bedroom villa with a terrace and outside maids room. I used a company called maids.ae who did a fantastic job. I asked for 4 maids (they sent me 2 men and 2 women). The did deep cleaning within the villa and scrubbed the tiles in the kitchen and 5 washrooms. Paid them about AED 40/- per person for an hour and an additional AED 80/- for cleaning products. They said I could hire for a minimum time of 4 hours (which was well needed). The villa was empty when they came to clean.
