Ladies, can i ask a "personal" question.... if you recieve a housing allowance from your/DH's work, how much is it per annum? DH recieves an allowance 100,000AED last year, 120,000AED (after much fighting) proposed this year.... personally as a family i think its quite grippy. He is a General Manager. Thanks :-) Please dont reply to slate me, all i want to know is if this is the "going rate" Our's is double your allowance. Blimey thats good, we get 150k and enhancements in salary for utility bills :)

Don't put a cake covered in ready to roll (fondant) icing in the fridge, it will sweat. You can if it is royal icing. If you are using fondant icing, store in a cool dry area. Fruit cake, if properly convered in icing and sealed, can actually last years... So I am told... Ours never last that long! He he dont think ours will .... well maybe if no one likes the taste of it never made it before but i have to say its looking mighty fine and i am extremely impressed with myself Lol. Its not royal icing so i will store it in my air tight container? That should be ok right? Thank you Egg

Can you weigh up the cost of the taxi to the airport, then weigh up the cost of hiring a cheap car today maybe for one day? And get the car seats as extra then drop back off at airport tomorrow morning?

The report is very misleading deliberately i think. I think until they clearly define the patients seen with the diagnosis and provide further information on how they determine its Local Malaria or imported we should not be overly alarmed. As i siad before its ok if a patient says they have not travelled recenlty Malaria can lie dormant for up to 4 years. It may be that just 1 of those patients said they had not travelled recently and the media always just pick up on the downside of everything.

The report does not say all people who reported with malaria lived in international city, its says the Dr works there, those patients could have come from labour camps or other areas of Dubai.

Personally I think it evens out to roughly the same I fill my car up 3 times a week here whereas in the UK I would only fill up once every two weeks. What do you drive to fill up 3 times a week jee whizz i fill up about every 1.5 weeks 70 AED and drive all over the place :( ETA when i was recently in uk the hire car was 1/4 full had to take it back full, went to petrol station (had to fill up myself i might add Lol) and it cost me almost 50 gbp i nearly fainted :( edited by egg on 15/12/2011

Ok so from what i have just read to identify local or imported malaria agencies have to go and inspect the persons residence and take surface samples. I wonder if that has been done. Im not going on about it just trying to put peoples minds at rest that unless there is hard evidence to prove it was transmitted locally from infected mosquito's its more than likely to be imported. Malaria can lie dormant for a certain amount of time before symptons appear: For most people, symptoms begin 10 days to 4 weeks after infection, although a person may feel ill as early as 7 days or as late as 1 year later. Two kinds of malaria, P. vivax and P. ovale, can occur again (relapsing malaria). In P. vivax and P. ovale infections, so[b'>me parasites can remain dormant in the liver for several months up to about 4 years after a person is bitten by an infected mosquito[/b'>. edited by egg on 15/12/2011

Ok, but the article says that the cases are imported Malaria ?? The DR says that they appear to be local cases not confirmed "She added some cases appear to be "local transmissions" rather than "imported" ones" My question to that is how do you know if its imported or Local??? The UAE is free from malaria: DHA A spokesperson from DHA (Dubai Health Authority) said, "Malaria transmission is eradicated in the UAE and the country has a WHO certificate of being malaria-free. UAE worked on eradication of malaria disease since 1979 and WHO certified UAE-free of malaria in May 2006. "However, like any other cities where malaria transmission is eradicated, we do have cases of imported malaria in the country. "You may appreciate that Dubai's population is multi-cultural and Dubai is a multi-ethnic society and there is considerable population movement from UAE to countries where malaria is holoendemic or hyper endemic. So the imported malaria is caused either by visiting friends and relatives back home or during summer vacations to such countries. Thus people can get infection and return to UAE. This is what we call imported malaria. "At DHA, we have a travel clinic covering all travel-related issues in Al Mankhool Preventive Medicine Centre and Al Muhaisnah Medical Fitness Centre, where clients are prescribed adequate chemoprophylaxis and counselling on how to avoid mosquito bites and use mosquito repellent creams when visiting such countries. "All cases reported to DHA in 2011 are cases of imported malaria, all the cases are expatriates and most are imported cases, especially from India and African countries."

Meat as in mince and beaf maybe, but a cornfed (not organic) chicken here is equivalent to £12, I can get an organic cornfed chicken in the UK for £8. edited by Sugarbeach on 11/12/2011 Yeah not impressed with the chicken here, dont like it from LuLu and its expensive in spinneys and cant stomach the frozen varieties Lol Will occasionally get the chicken breasts from spinneys (however have you noticed how much bigger the breasts are than the actual chickens they offer for sale makes you wonder) on second thoughts please dont answer i dont want to know Lol

Yeah beef and mince definitely cheaper than home get it from LuLu mainly the Brazil beef is by far the nicest i personally prefer it to the NZ or Aus beef and its cheaper, the mince you can get the low fat or normal and steaks are far cheaper too for 30 AED you can get 5 really good size peices of steak thats equivalent to 5 gbp last time i was home it was considerably more expensive than that and my MIL said she paid that for 2 small pieces :)

i wish i had been given a chpoice Lol Are your company going to provide the housing or just an allowance? I guess if they will provide housing then you would require a mix of Apartments and Villa's Being a family of 4 most people thought we would want a villa but i actually prefer a large apartment. For the younger singles a nice 1 or 2 bedroom apartment near a metro i would think would be nice. Alternatively housing allowance needs to be around 150,000 to get somewhere decent and include the agency fee and security deposit, probably more if a larger family. I think that as a business (mine does) has different bands of housing allowance some are paid 100K some 110K and the higher bands are paid 150,000.
