Taken from Time out dubai Bobbi Brown Studio: Bobbi Brown believes that women want to look like themselves, only better, a tenet that I found immensely appealing, as I don’t tend to wear a lot of make-up. After prepping the skin with a series of deliciously hydrating serums and balms, my dark under-eye circles were miraculously sent packing with the help of a corrector and concealer combo. A dab of barely-there foundation and some clever tricks with a scarily luminous but surprisingly effective pink blush gave my cheeks a healthy, dewy glow (I even looked, dare I say it, youthful). Eye make-up ranges from simple and stylish to effortless ‘smoky eyes’. Highly recommended. Bobbi Brown Studio, Dubai Marina Mall (04 399 7527). Dhs250 for full make-up, Dhs500 for two-hour make-up lesson with the cost redeemable against Bobbi Brown products. Faces: Once Cindy, the make-up artist at Faces, finished my make-up, there was no doubt that it was the best my face had looked in… well, I don’t know when. She used products from the Benefit line, using a range of beautiful colours that she expertly blended to match my outfit. Plus, when I was done, my complexion looked flawless. The only problem was that it took her 90 minutes to do the job. It was worth it, but it’s a good thing I wasn’t pressed for time. Still, she gave me some very useful tips and samples, which were offered for free. Available at Faces, Ibn Battuta Mall (04 368 5594; www.faces-me.com), and locations throughout Dubai. Make-up application is free – just call to make an appointment beforehand. Free skincare sessions are also available. Harvey Nichols: Harvey Nichols in Dubai has an exclusive Chanel make-up studio. As passing shoppers looked on I perched on a stall and let the expert work his magic with the prestigious products. He must have been a well-practised magician as it only took him 20 minutes. The look was quite natural, with soft peachy tones, but my bright glossy red lips added glamour. A good choice if you just want an in-and-out spruce up. Mall of the Emirates (04 409 8888). Free upon purchase of a Chanel product. Paris Gallery: For the best makeover at Paris Gallery, head to Festival Centre. That’s where Roy, an official make-up artist for Bobbi Brown, works his magic. He’s used to pretty-fying models and actresses, so you know you’re in good hands. Just tell him where you’re going and what you’ll be wearing and he’ll do the rest. Our makeover took about 40 minutes and, while it’s hard not to feel a bit like a clown after being caked in cosmetics, we must say the overall look was quite natural – smoky eyes, flawless foundation and pink lips. Roy’s also full of good advice. ‘There are three people in life you must never annoy,’ he told us. ‘Your make-up artist, your stylist, and your chef.’ We’ll bear that in mind. The Dubai Mall (04 330 8289). Free, with the expectation to purchase products. Make-up lessons are Dhs500 for two hours. Sephora: All women with a lust for cosmetics adore Sephora. I am no exception. Having one of their professional staff members do my make-up is, granted, a great credit-crunch indulgence. If you’re a counter connoisseur, you can pick out the colours you want from any of the numerous brands that line the shelves. I’m not that expert, so I decided to let the knowledgeable therapists talk me through my options and advise where necessary. I wanted a daytime look, and my therapist applied a light application for using Stila and Benefit products picked to match my skin tone. The whole process took 30 minutes and I left the store with a natural glow. The Dubai Mall (04 339 9828). Light make-up application costs Dhs50. Dark make-up application costs Dhs75. MAC: I wanted my green eyes to pop before heading out into the Dubai night, so I asked my make-up artist to give me a smoky look. After my skin was cleansed and primed she started mixing orange and black eye shadows. The colour combo scared me at first, as it looked potentially garish, but it worked well once it was on my face. The eyeliner she applied was lighter than I would have liked, but otherwise I was sporting a sufficiently sultry look. Next she moved on to the rest of my face, applying foundation to areas I’d normally leave bare, but this resulted in my skin looking thoroughly flawless. Dubai Marina Mall (04 434 2729). Dhs200 with a free mascara.

As others have said, there is no after school support and with no family support we had to get a full time live in maid, it worked out ok, never had any issues with her until about 2 months ago. We do school bus and then maid meets lo from bus until we get back from work after 5pm. You could use an agency maid but i dont think you can opt to get the same maid every day and itmight be too confusing for your lo having someone different everyday. Good luck.

Sadly, I have encountered many situations in the ME where you are defined by what you do. Many a time I have been in a social situation where as soon as someone finds out that you are a 'housewife', the light switches off and they start to scour the room for a more interesting audience. What many don't realize is how many spouses, especially woman, have given up careers in order to support their other halves. Just because we don't work, does not mean that we lack intelligence. I will just add that im a working mum and experience the complete opposite, the look of utter shock on the mums faces at school when asked could i help with the parent/teacher type activites and the answer was no sorry i work was unbelieveable, you would have thought i just told them sorry i have a murder planned and cant help, i say great if you can be a sahm fab if you have to work so be it, i have friends who work and friends who dont we all manage intelligent conversations and no one looks at the others in any other way than friends. Just thought i'd share from the other side Lol :)

Thanks, I'll get these for my dd. She gets acne and we've tried all sorts of remedies none of which have really worked. They are really nice and leave my skin feeling lovely and clean, i dont use anything else on my skin at all, they remove eye make up and everything and im pretty sure they are unscented too. Its worth 45 AED just to give them a try and see if they are right for youre DD. Good luck :)

That depends on the nationality of the maid. Ethiopians are the cheapest and Philippinos are the most expensive. You choose the maid based on her resume. You have to pay the sponsorship fees but the one-way airfare is paid for. You must pay the maid every month. You pay the agency when the maid arrives. You have to wait a few weeks, depending on the nationality. Great thanks Anon

HI, My maid is looking for a new job. She has been with us 6 years and is extremely competent. My kids have grown up and I don't need a full time maid anymore. She leaves for Sri Lanka in a week but would love to line up a job before she goes. If you are interested let me know and I will send you her phone number. She does need a home that will take her husband too. I can vouch for both of them. Hi Alice thanks, but i cant take her husband, thanks for the offer though :)

Can i add to this and ask about driving licences when back in the UK. Both of our UK licences have expired, weve both got our UAE ones, can we hire a car in the UK ok with this ??? thanks I used my UAE one every time i go back to the UK i never give my UK one, so it should not be a problem. Not sure about long term rental though but definitely for a holiday period i.e you give a pick up and drop off date.

I love how she tells you when she's looking to leave - you are here concerned about whether you're bound by a contract lapsing in October, she seems to be 'above' the idea of this contract - as far as she knows you could tell her she stays til it ends or you ban her. On a good note you must have a very positive home if she feels so confident that she will find work in Europe! I also think that while you may have contributed to her being like this, I think she came fully stocked up on herself when you got her - being a maid in Europe is a very, very big dream, or a very high step in the maid ladder - like leaving a training job and thinking you'll work as manager next. I think she told me about her leaving as i said im starting interviews, in my mind i think shes doing it for more money and has not really thought it through properly, she is now waiting for a friend from russia to see if she can get her a job, im just concerned that im going away in august and i dont want her still here god knows what i might or might not come back to. No way am i paying her anymore than she gets now, i told her she best start looking as soon as i find someone shes either transferred or on a plane out of here. Seriously cant quite believe it though out of the blue never had a single issue with her in 3 years teach me not to be too youre part of the family style relationship with the next one though hey! Thanks :)

Thanks, Im quite annoyed with her as we have looked after her really well for 3 years, we pay her over the odds anyway with 2 days off. Herein, i think, lies the problem, i think we have been "too good" to her. She told me shes probably looking to leave August or September, but im not willing to have her here that long if she obviously does not want to work for us anymore. Back to the mind field of looking again :( Thanks for the reply :)

Hi, I traced mine so far to 1860, struggling with my Mum's side as they are Irish with very very common names so thats a bit difficult. I use Ancestry.com as a worldwide membership as you can access everything with this one and i pay the subscription monthly. Also try genesreunited.co.uk thats quite good and has a really good forum, where people, if they are going to records places, will do a search for you too Also the church of the latter day saints website, they have some good info too https://familysearch.org/ Good luck, i love searching when i have the time, i found out my Great grandfather fled to NYC on a ship (got the ship log and everything) before my Great Grandmother gave birth and started a whole new family there, i also traced his parents and roots are from Poland, they fled to the UK then went to USA i even managed to get photographs of the great great grandparents which my dad was thrilled with.

Thanks all, yeah she said she will be around Dubai resting?? I said no she can go home and we will pay for the flight and give her the holiday pay but she cant just take a month off and wander around Dubai?? Checked our contract and it says that she can have flight home plus months salary or take the cost of the flight plus the holiday pay. I read somewhere that its changing to 15 days? But i think it may be Abu Dhabi though and not Dubai?

I see Dr Kasid Nouri at Welcare Hospital - you do not need a referral from your GP, I have recently checked with him for a fellow sufferer who wanted to see him - just make an appointment (I do it online, all very easy and generally get one within a few days). My insurance covers the cost, but worth checking your particular insurance on their website. Thanks ladies :)

Not sure about the most couples have things in common etc i think its a learning process, you learn to like each others interests and once you are together you have goals as a couple, my DH and i were complete opposites when we met im wild and mischievous he is calm and nothing bothers him im a feisty so and so but he calms me hes a good influence on me Lol, i think that with a relationship comes compromise, if he does like partying and you dont, why not go out one weekend stay in the next works for us :) go for it as i said before you wont know unless you try :)

No one should be "out of anyones league" as another poster said if there is a connection it would be there regardless of looks. I once dated a very handsome guy, model looks, everyone ffancied him, it didnt work out, we had fun, i never felt insecure just enjoyed what i had at the time, again like you i wouldnt class myself as an oil painting but im not unatractive either, its really easy to like someone because of the way they look, best thing to do is like others have said make the move, talk to him or get your friend to introduce you see how it goes, get to know him he may be a complete "donkey" or an aboslute gem you'll never know unless you try. Good luck.

I too have had migraines for years, i had a numbing stroke like episode once which was terrifying, they said i had Benign Intercranial Hypertension and wanted to do lumber punches i declined that offer and instead take Topiramax (i have the pain and also disturbed vision but no nausea) and also have imigran nasal spray and tablets, the spray is actually pretty good although it tastes vile. Good luck migraines are the absolute pits.

Knowledge Village, I have a Q regarding this: I applied for the card as i need to do this for visa renewal (1st time ID application), they didnt put a visa number as my old one was expiring. Can i go to KV with my payment slip and get the biometrics done then the card will be done and delivered in a few weeks? DH applied at the same time (his visa was already processed) and they sent him an appointment through for September??

I was there in November last year, stayed at Coral Sands nice clean hotel food was good, pool was small. Depends what teenagers want to do, beach is nice and clean and there is surfing a bit further up near Buddas Bar, organised trips, but to be fair knowing my teenagers they would not have much to do there. As Emur said the trip from Colombo to Hikkaduwa is a nightmare and depending on the time of day can take an age to get there. It was interesting trip from DH and i as we just headed out walking early morning and ended up all over, if teenagers like that its cool. If the teenagers like surfing, hanging out at the beach etc then Hikkaduwa is great :) The Sri Lankan people are some of the nicest people i have ever come across on my travels always smiling and happy :)(

I think so Egg, my daughters have switched between the calpol here and the UK calpol without complaint (and they are prone to being fussy, given half a chance!). The calpol I get in the Ranches pharmacy is the same pink sugar free stuff in the purple cardboard box with a photo of a baby on - I'm sure it is the same as I get in England. Super i will pop over tomorrow although im guessing they now may sell out very quick ha ha :)

I go for the make up and perfume its super cheap, I wear Nivea except for my bare minerals, and its 10 AED for lipsticks mascara eyeshadow blush the lot, also go to the perfume store on ground floor all my favourites are 99AED beats paying over 250 aed in the big stores, worth the trip out there if youhave time for browsing, but if you are looking for clothing or shoes in particular its hit and miss. Other thing is everyone is into Sanuk shoes and the sports direct store on top floor sell them for anywhere between 40 - 100 AED half price of what debenhams charge.

I actually did it for my 10 year old too, you have to supply a photograph for under 15 and its AED 140 plus 30 typing. As far as i was told if you are renewing this year (visa) even under 15 need to have proof of payment for EID card at time of visa renewal? People will go and do the ID card once their friends tell them they got fined AED 1000 for not having one, i had every intention of getting mine once my visa was processed, there seemed no point doing for 4 months of this year then having to pay again for a renewal once my new visa was processed, i only found out by off chance when i popped in to HR to ask about something else, they handed back my passports and told me of the law change the day before. Just thought i would share it with everyone else. :)

We have a Galah Cockatoo female and a 10 year old child, she is not too good withanyone else in the house if DH is around, she idolises him. If im home alone with her she is a completely different nature and very affectionate. She is not messy at all very clean and tidy, fussy eater when it comes to veg and fruit though and has a tendency to bite when she is excited. She is lovely though, she dances waves if you ask her, whistles for you to come back if you leave the room has just started to sort of say something which sounds like hello she is almost 1 year old and a little mischevious but all in all we love her and her personality. Parrots definitely need lots of attention and time out of their cages. We had a Grey here , which we got here, but she had PBFD and had to be put to sleep, so i would just say be careful where you get a Grey from as there are no laws governing animals or selling with the correct certificates to ensure they are disease free. Good luck. edited by egg on 15/04/2012

Thanks Everyone, This is now a new rule which came into effect apparently on Wednesday last week, in order to process your new residency visa you have to have at least applied and paid for Emirates ID I did it this morning my DH also his says he will get an appointment in 2 weeks mine says visa under process please proceed to medical visa assessment and biometrics (at same place apparently). DH application had his residence visa number on it mine was blank and said under process, this is so i am not charged twice for EID process as it needs to have the valid residence permit number on it and not an expired one so the guy said. Apparently when i go for my visa medical i can do the biometric stuff at same time then just get my EID once visa has been processed. It was pretty painless to be honest took 1.5 hours to get 4 EID applications done but worth the wait tog et it all sorted. We just went to the typing centre and they will be in touch when we can go and get appointment.

My residency visa expires next week and my employer was in process of renewing, however, the lasw changed and apparently i now need to have applied for my EID card and have proof of payment before my visa can be processed. If i just go to a typing centre say at knowledge village and get the documents typed up and pay for the EID i dont want to pay the full amount of 200 per year + fees as surely when my new visa is renewed next week this old ID card will be obsolete and i will have to apply again? Help im confused :(
