I think living here you just need to get used to the fact that bills will be higher in summer, but there is lots you can do to help. While we sleep with AC on 23, in the morning I turn one to 24 and leave on auto, the other upstairs one I turn off, then I close the door to the guestroom. (who cares if its hot in there if we arent using it? I open that door at night again when the AC is on). Downstairs is off at night and we only turn it on as we go down in the morning, the kitchen one is a split unit and I turn it on for a 1hr cycle only (to help cool everything down) then the living area one which will stay on until we go to bed, I keep it on 24 most of the day but if its not to bad I may turn it off for a bit in the afternoon or to 25. We only water plants very very late at night or very early in the morning, you wont need as much then. Not sure if you have a helper but make sure she is not flushing toilets when they haven't been used, running taps for a long time when cleaning, not hosing the ground outside etc. Our helper used to flush each toilet (we have 5) 2-3 times every time she cleaned them, thats a lot of water, and also electricity as the booster pump kicks in every time you use water in a villa. I have a window that gets a lot of afternoon sun, closing the curtain helps to keep some of that heat out as well. Good luck :) Thank you, yes i have a housemaid and im at work all day i keep telling her to switch off AC if she is not using it i keep coming home (even in winter) to ac on 18 on the kitchen when no one is in there, i will have another word with her! Thank you Egg

Hi SkyKitty I had same problem with a bag i got from Karama, i wiped the outside down with vinegar. I then got some of those smelly linen balls?? you buy them in little organza bags at lifestyle in MOE or Dubai Mall Lower Ground floor, i chose the strongest nicest smelling ones and put them inside the bag, left them in there for about 2 weeks and when im not using the bag i put them back inside just to keep it fresh. That worked for me. HTH Egg :)

Hi egg would be Interested as to how you got an exemption from KHDA as I may have to go down this route ...my daughter does go to OT as she is struggling with her hand writing.. The school did it, we didnt have to do anything. They got him exemption but they did say that this was for now and the rules may change. The issue with DS is that he was so overly worried as he knew when he gets to G6 if he cant pass Arabic they will hold him back so he was fretting even more than normal, they ahve now said he should be ok until he comes to college as they may require him to have an arabic certificate but i will cross that bridge when i get to it. Does your DD go to learning support at her school? If so go and speak to them, the head and his class teacher thats what we did.

Hi cddsmum, I think that they can do whatever they want here to be honest, but i also think it depends on the school. My DS follows a PYP International Programme so its not as structured as UK but they still achieve same results. I didnt fully understand until they explained it like this: Youhave children joining schools in Dubai who come from all over the world, where every education system teaches different methods, how can youtell a child from i dont know say Hong Kong the way they were taught long division is incorrect? They basically say that if each child gets the correct answer does it matter how they got there so long its the same? It makes sense if you think about it although im not sure i explained it quite correctly??? Anyway, they seem to do whatever they feel is right for their school its all about scores and where they are on the education provider tables and all that bull**** Sad really as its kids education they are messing with

I hate the subject of hairdressers im at my wits end. Went to a very well thought of place in JLT my hair was 2 colours. Went to another place someone told me about as my hair is now highlighted (got it done to perfection whilst at home UK and about 70% cheaper than here) its a god awful mess its brassy there must be about 8 different shades running through it, not blended in nicely at all. Is it too much to ask to have a decent set of highlights done!! Rant over :( Have to say i know its not remotely funny at the time but i can just imagine Dangerous Blondes face when smurf hair appeared :(

Ok so my DS is not the same age but i will share ours with you" DS is 10 came here 3 years ago from British school and joined International School He has Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, i was distraught as i heard schools here were not willing to entertain children with any educational needs. He passed entrance exam flying colours, we had previously explained his issues and gave them the reports and diagnosis at the time they said he mayhave to drop a year but as he passed the exam he went straight into G2 he struggled so much that at he end of the term they kept him back a year and he repeated G2 again. He moved up and has been doing very well until recently, where he now appears to be struggling again. We have had tutors, occupational therapy but they keep telling me he will struggle severly with G5 and wont be abel to keep up with the work. DS got exemption from KHDA for doing any languages to concetrate on learning support so every time the class has languages including arabic he goes to learning support whilst the school are great and give him these extra classes i dont know how productive they are. Its really difficult with your DS being 17 as i imagin it would be harded for him to repeat a year as he will have so many friends and may feel embarrassed at the thought. I think you need to determine what level of struggling he is at, is he just not putting in the effort (as other poster said) or is it the workload? We are going to have to make a similar decision soon as to what we are going to allow to happen to DS. Terrible predicament to be in, Wish you all the luck in the world and hope it turns out ok for your DS.

At the Dubai World Cup? They normally do a pick 6 or something similar. Then you get the chance to win prizes. If you want to bet, you need to do it online at one of the overseas bookies. Thank you was thinking of going to the carnival on saturday but unsure how it all worked. Thanks :)

They usually list the type of food the restaurants serve aswell I am racking my brains but cannot think of anywhere as Friday is usually the day for brunches :-) There is a restaurant at The Stables, a new bar next to Fibber Magees on SZR I think it starts late in the afternoon and is a carvery :-) thanks, i will have a look i was thinking of Arabian Ranches Golf Club as i think they do non fussy food and i had breakfast there once but never dinner? I have had 2 fairly decent kebabs since i have been here so you may want to try The Greens Kebab Shop very tasty and you can sit in One next to the York Hotel in Bur Dubai for the best chicken kebabs they are really tasty especially after falling out of Waxy's and stumbling across this little gem at 2 am :) Sorry dont know the actual names :)

Hi fairycake, We stayed at Horizon Beach Resort Karon, it was nice, rooms were big had 2 different pools, breakfast was nice, it was on hill (Tsunami safe zone :) Lol) but you would have to see if it suits you and kids they had a kids club but i liked the location of the hotel as if you walk down the hill there is food outlets nice resteraunts, baby elephant to feed every night, rooms had dvd player and you can buy dvd cheap enough from shop round the corner, plenty to keep little ones entertained. DS is not into kids clubs and only went once while we were there, they also have a swim up bar, a regular bar and resteraunt. It was a nice family location tuks tuks you would have to barter with them, you can also barter for day trips too which we did and went to Phi Phi Island on a speedboat with lunch snorkelling etc for just over 1000 baht? ETA tripadvisor is my travel companion, get on agoda and booking.com see hotels in your price range then check them out on tripadvisor see what the hotel has to offer and see if its right for you. x edited by egg on 06/03/2012

They also have a live out option. Which is great because you can still have your privacy during the evenings :). It costs a bit more though compared to having a full time live in. Think it is around 2500aed per month for AR And you don't pay the sponsorship costs etc? That actually sounds like a pretty good deal. But the cost of the maid (2500) you could probably do it under your own sponsorship paying less salary and getting someone you chose and not off a database, plus of that 2500 what are they going to pay the maid? I bet its not even half that :( :\:

Definitely Thailand Phuket, Etihad are doing direct flights 6 hours 50 minutes, for about 2500 each, but you have to callthem or alternatively you can book the flight with Expedia online, you can get cheaper hotels etc by using sites like agoda.com and booking.com use both to compare the prices as sometimes one is considerably cheaper than the other, also check the room policies as most places offer free kids under x years and you may get away with only paying for 1 extra bed and letting little ones share? I went to Sri Lanka too but definitely preferred Thailand for things for the little ones to do. It might take a bit of internet research but you can definitely do it for a reasonable price, we went to Thailand flights hotel and breakfast included for 1000 gbp for 3 of us.

My maid went away for a month and i am working full time, juggling family and everything else but... I got an agency maid to come do the major clean once a week and just about managed to do everything else except for the ironing myself i just reverted to ironing when we needed it Lol. As for full time live in, it depends if you find someone you can trust and feel comfortable with then its not actually that bad having a live in, ours has been with us 3 years (1 year live out, 2 years live in) and its mighty handy especially if running late from work etc, i dont know she is in the house half the time. Good luck ladies.

Live in Motorcity and wondered what he census of opinion would be on the following: DS (10) does not respond too well to homework with me and DH, he has dyspraxia so struggles with handwriting, reading is very good maths is standard. Both DH and i work full time and by the time we get in cook tea etc its quite late doing homework and he would rather chat and play than dohomework (as he hasnt seen us all day which is understandable) Looking at maybe some help for him with his homework for an hour was thinking of asking a friends teenager / high school student to help him and would compensate them for their time but dont really know anyone. He is a delightful little boy and very bright just struggles to get it on paper and we think he would respond to someone who is not mum or dad better. What do you think has it got illegal written all over it?
