what he wants is for us to take over and deal with the company directly so he can get out and not look back. We do not want is as rera advised us against it. Also we signed the contract with him and not his company, which I cannot care less about.

First of all I did not go and "spent" the money somewhere else . I have rented out my one bed apt and moved into a bigger space as I got pregnant and have a small child now. Second of all, I did not say I cannot afford to give him the money back. We have savings which are all kept into our acount in Europe as we do not like to keep cash in the bank here. We all know why, isn't it? And last, he should have told me this from the begining instead of going on and on with the letter. He never said he wanted the money back , he just wanted us to sign the letter. Actually, even now I don't know if he wants the stupid money or no..i am just guessing he might accept it if I offer to follow the RERA regulation /usual procedure.

If the company gave him money up front then made him redundant a few months later, the company ought to cover the cost of the penalty for breaking the tenancy contract. The company I work for would do the right thing Exactly!!! And this is the case, he is not saying the company wants the money back . He is just saying they want the letter, so maybe he's hiding something.. I don't know. My head is about to burst.

you should have a copy of the tenancy contract when he signed it, on the tenancy contract it doesnt state anywhere that the tenant has to pay the landlord. ONLY if the tenant does not wish to renew the tenancy contract, he shall inform the landlord through a written notice 2 months prior to expiry date. And how are you supposed to give notice when you get canned out of the blue? Sorry playing devil's advocate here. Need to sit the other side of the fence sometimes. We used the 65 k to rent our own place in retun so now we would have to pocket out 30 k within a week. I don't think it's fair on us either.

it sounds like he is trying to pass on the responsibility to repay his homing loan to you. I would follow rera regulation - if it is a three month penalty, would enforce that, give him back the remainder of the rent and khalas. There is nothing like that mentioned in our rental, no early cancelation clause, so what does the law say, or what is normal practice?

Abaddon, you should really go and visit the nurseries in Warsan. You would be surprised of the amount of plants/pots and useful things they sell. And the prices are not bad either but you have to bargain a bit. I bought nice off white/brown pebbles for 15 dirhams a bag when the same is sold for 30 dirhams in Dragon mart and 50 plus in Ace and Dubai Garden Center. The long (2 m) bamboo stakes are sold for 5 dirhams each. Also, if you need plants, the nursery that supplies Dubai Garden center (Desert Group Nurseries) are located in Al Khawaneej and they sell the same plants as the ones in DGC for 10 times less. When I landscaped my garden I bought everything from there. They have very nice fruit trees. I bought some lemon trees, orange, mango and even a grape vine which is growing sooo well. They also sell papaya, mulberry, banana, coconut, figs, you name it! The guy that showed me around was very knowledgeable and they delivered everything for free. With regards to the sand, I don't think anyone will tell you anything if you go and get a couple of bags from the desert :) However, I think it would be very hard work. I had to remove part of the sand from some of the flower beds and decided to do it myself. NEVER AGAIN!! The sand is so heavy and it's very difficult to lift a full bag by yourself, unless you are really strong and fit , which I am not :) But if you only need a couple of bags or want to do it for fun than I guess you could give it a try :)

OMG , thank you for that! I know their products (actually only the universal potting mix) This is sold in all the supermarkets and in the nurseries. Every year i spend a huge amount of money in Ace , just for potting soil, so this is very good news to me. I will call them tomorrow and place an order. May I ask what kind of mix are you going to do now? Will you still use the coco peat the peat moss or you will just use the veggie/fruit soil from shalimar as it is ? What about the compost? Do you mix it with the potting soil before planting?

We bought some from Dragon Mart. Ask around as most of the shops sell the metal ones and not the gypsum. But you should be able to find some. I think I paid 70 dirhams for one pack (10 pcs ).

Hi Abaddon..That's a great idea. I am also thinking of mixing some red sand (Sweet Soil) with the soil to save some money as I want to plant a lot this year. This sand is sold at 5 dirhams per bag @warsan. I remember last year I bought peat moss from the same nurseries. I think they all sell it but I bought it from the Landscaper's Mart - The only one that looks like a proper shop- it's the last one going straight from the roundabout, away from the other nurseries.. They sell huge bags of 100 or 200 liters for hundred something dirhams. They also sell perlite, wood bark and wood mulch. They are more expensive than the rest of the nurseries so check the others first. I haven't seen any coco peat.

Not sure if you plan to pay cash or get a mortgage, but you wont be able to leave Dubai in the future without paying your debts off, If you cant then its a trip to Dubai Hilton. You also dont get automatic rights to abode here either. My hubby is in construction and has said they arent built to last, you have no guarantees if there are major faults to, unlike the UK where you have a 10 year warranty. I know the maintenance fees are very expensive. This my opinion, there has been many posts this this before, have a look thru, I know people have purchased properties here, some have had no problems but others have. SalsB ..what do you mean? One cannot leave dubai if having a mortgage from a local bank for a property????? That's insane and I really hope it's not true.

How much is the annual fee for the Gold and Platinum cards? Is there a monthly fee as well? On their site , for the Platinum plus it says 350 annually and 900 monthly? Isn't that way too expensive??? If I save the 900 aed a month in about 4 months I will buy myself a ticket to any European destination isn’t it?

If she entered the country on a visa issued with you as a sponsor, ofc you will be responsible for her flight back!. My maid is Srilankan and we always send her home with flydubai. One way ticket to colombo will cost you less than 500 dirhams if you buy it a while in advance, so not that bad really. Good Luck!

I read somewhere that the success of growing vegetables in this extreme climate is all about the seeds. The best are those that have acclimatized - and that takes only a season. Since I did not save any seeds from my last year crop, I thought I could try with the supermarket ones. So today I have bought some locally grown capsicum, tomatoes and aubergines from Carrefour. I plan to take the seeds out , put them on a newspaper on top of the fridge and hope they will be ready to be planted in a couple of weeks . Will see how it goes and if I will have more success with those or the store bought seeds. Happy gardening! edited by Eli1979 on 11/09/2011

Greenish, great to see you are still around!! Thank you for the tips and for sharing your Dubai vegetable growing experience. I can’t wait to start planting my garden this year. I am very excited, as this time round I actually have an irrigation system in place which I adapted to work for the pots. This will hopefully make a huge difference as the main issue I had the previous years was watering on time. Another problem was fertilizing without touching the leaves. One guy at Dubai Garden center has recommended a liquid organic fertilizer and has suggested placing it in the water tank of the irrigation system. Never thought abt that , but it’s a great idea and should make fertilizing so easy . I just hope I get the measure right and not kill the whole garden in one go! I also hope to be more organized this time and actually get to fill out that cute expensive garden diary I bought more than 2 years ago which is still laying around empty , without a single word in. :) May I also ask which lettuce variety did you have success with? I never manage to grow any, maybe because of the heat? It’s my favorite vegetable and would love to finally get to eat some from my garden.:):) edited by Eli1979 on 09/09/2011

Hi Janesul..I am also planning to start a container garden this season. I have tried growing different vegetables and fruit in the garden but it did not work out.The soil /sand is too poor and had to fertilize and water way to often. I also grew tomatoes in big containers and they did very well! Had had plenty of supply for a couple of months.

We are also at The Villa and even though there are some issues, we love it here. We had a budget of 200 K and looked at villas more or less everywhere in Dubai and could not find anything comparable. Yes, if you choose to live in a brand new property it is normal to expect some problems in the first year. All the villas we looked at especially in the Meadows, Springs, the Ranches and Jumeirah looked sooo old and deteriorated compared to the houses here , so we decided to go for it. And we could not be happier with our choice now. edited by Eli1979 on 30/08/2011

Thank you Wikkid. I just remembered I switched off the irrigation system by mistake for 3 days. I went and checked the readings for those days and it's true - the water reduced dramatically but the electricity it's exactly the same as before. So definitively it's not the pump , as you correctly said. We will try doing all the tests this weekend and hopefully we will be able to identify the source. We love this place by the way :) and thank you for creating the community website. It's so helpful!

Great detailed post Wikkid! Thanks We are in The Villa and had high DEWA bills especially for the past couple of months. Our problem is electricity. We are taking down the meter values every day and our average daily consumption is 150 KW. We were away for 3 weeks, pool empty so the pumps were off, maid on vacation and a/c units were all turned off. We came back to took the readings and still had an average of 65 KW consumed per day and we were not even there! Could the pump for the irrigation system use that much energy? I heard that the A/c units in these villas do not have a thermostat. Could it be that they still use energy even when they are off? We have grass in the front and back garden, lots of trees and plants and the water consumption is minimal!!! It's the electrical part that makes up 80% of the bill and just can't understand why? edited by Eli1979 on 24/08/2011

Dr. told me very clear during my first and only appointment that he recommends not to tell anything to anybody as it is still very early and there are some risks. He was very cautious, which I think it is very realistic but I cannot really stop thinking on his words :( If everything goes well, I will also deliver at City Hospital! you dr. is right.. I had to rush to ER today with cramps and bleeding..no more due March 2012 for me :((((
