Classes of 20 when full and I think they said 600 pupils in total at full capacity. Hungry_Caterpillar, I paid an assessment fee at Victory heights primary also, so that's definitively not a new thing. It did not bother me this time because we got a full set of uniform for free including swimwear , book bags and all other uniform items. There are pros and cons for each school , you just need to find the right one for you. Good luck

Wow 30% of the school fees are due within a week of accepting a place. Is that typical of BC schools? Our children are in an IB school and we only paid 4,000 dhs registration fee to accept the place. Dovecote are asking for over 12,000. Ouch. We are considering moving to Jebel Ali/DIP area so this is a school we would consider for our youngest... I did notice that when we registered but it did not apply to us, as we started straight away after registration. Their website says this is a KHDA rule , no idea if other schools require such a high deposit tbh. We only paid 4000 at NAS. Why dont you visit the school and talk with principal about it.

We moved our son from NAS to Dovecote in February. Best thing we ever did for our child and our family. We live in the Green Community so the location is a plus , but the school ticks all the boxes for us. I was not looking specifically for high academic achievements as he is only FS1 but he actually learned how to write and read up to 3 letter words in this short time. His behavior improved drastically whereas in his previous school it was deteriorating daily for some reason. They focus on academics with heart and care for the child and being a primary school it is a very cozy and friendly environment. We are really impressed with them. The school has only a few staff members now but all highly trained and professional starting with the receptionist and ending with the teacher assistant. Fees are affordable and their facilities are great. The headmaster and his wife are a very pleasant and warm people. We are really happy there.

you ned to use a good primer. speedex in dip sells zinsser bin 123 that sticks to anything! you can than use any paint on top. you could easily do it yourself with a professional look, by using a mini foam roller. you can use the regular latex/wall paint from ace and then seal it with minwax polycrilic (water based poly). if they are not too many doors, its not a huge job. i have painted a lot of small furniture with very good results. look up for instructions and inspiration on pinterest. good luck

Seriously, when I read the raving reviews about NAS I feel like people are talking about a different school. And this shows how important it is to keep in mind that no school feels the same for everyone! What feels like the best school in the world to some it might feel like the worse to another. It is all about the individual needs of each child/family. I personally don't relate to the comments above as we are not happy with the communication at NAS which is so praised here . Yes, the school news , general communication is great but once you go down to parent teacher level things change. Yes, we do get a general daily email but that aside, there is no personal feedback at all. I cannot even count the times my child came home with scratches, bumps and bruises without any mention by the teacher. This is just an example. Another selling point is the small class of 16. I thought I should mention that the layout of the class is particular , as there are 2 classes being joined together and separated only by a half wall. That makes at least 32 children roaming around from one class to the other at all times. I was told it is like that everywhere in the UK. I personally prefer the regular single class, I think it is less distractive. I had no idea the head is leaving after 3 years, and I really hope that is not true!

I have a child at NAS and honestly I do not understand all the hype about it. This is my first Dubai school experience so I do not have anything to compare with, but in my opinion there is nothing in that school to justify the 60 k fees advertised for the new year. Not in the early years at least , as I cant speak for the older years. The fees advertised last year were 53000 . They are now 60 k and the school did not even have a KHDA inspection yet. I understand that most probably that was a first year promotional rate but we were never told this. I found that misleading, as it was never my intention to place my child in an exclusive school of the likes of Repton or Formake. I thought NAS was a regular school a bit on the expensive side, but it turns out it's going into the other direction. I am satisfied with the school in general but there are also quite a few things I am not happy with so they are not perfect.

I don't know if we are talking about the same school, but i did notice not all the teachers have the same attitude. Definitively face to face communication was not encouraged into our class as i have had to chase the teacher around and have found myself talking alone a couple of times. it is embarrassing and we are only taking about half a minute at max of their time. My son is telling me he did time out a couple of times and i would like to know these things from the teacher so i can work on his behavior at home too. I think it's just the whole concept of being in school at such a young age that i find wrong, and i was just not expecting such a difference in attitude between nursery and school. edited by Eli1979 on 07/09/2014

How long has he been in school? If it's the first few days that will be all about establishing routines and showing them where the toilets are at that age I would guess? Young children do take a few days to learn these things and to feel safe. That's the most important thing before any teaching begins. thank you! it has only been a week and that's why I am not yet in panic mode lol :) . I am trying to gather information as to what other schools are doing, as this is a new in Dubai school and totally new experience for us too. For example , what is the general approach to assistance in going to the toilet for 3 years old. I am talking about cleaning after a no 2 scenario :)

My God, i had no idea it was so expensive! 20000 is a lot! She has been with us for a year but she is extremely good with kids and they are quite attached to her. We are away for the summer in Europe and she is here with us. She got sick with bronchitis so we took her to the doctors here and he revealed her diabetic condition. Her glucose reading was 350!! That's when we found out she was actually on medication for it and i was shocked as she consumes at least half a kilo of sugar a week, only with her coffees!!! My husband is going to try to get her on his companys corporate scheme, maybe that would be cheaper.

Even if the 1st is a holyday, starting school on the 2nd will be a disaster.

I still have a bitter taste in my mouth after dealing with this school. I made sure to write to them and share my experience but i am not too sure the letter reached the principal since i did not have her email and just had to send it to the info address. I think it's a good idea to complain to khda too, as this whole assessment fee thing was disgusting, considering they knew from day one how oversubscribed they were. I did not apply late, it was immediatelly the 2nd day after they opened registrations.

Thank you for the reply. Would you mind sharing the Unpleasant issues?? We are planning on moving to the West too and hope to be moved in 3-4 weeks. Do you have children?? Hi, i have a 3 year old son and a 10 months old daughter. The issues were mainly with the house having humidity patches on the walls, near the baseboards which apprently is a common problem in the gc as it was built on a marsh without propper foundations and waterproofing. There is a damp smell in all the bathrooms , sewerage smell in the house sometimes . Poor street lighting and the latest one is the mosquito fogging done with toxic chemicals in the evenings when all the kids are at the park. I suggest you join the green community ladies page for a deeper inside view of the community life:)

Compared to some other schools, I think the 180 assessments for 70 places is tame. One other mum at the assessment day told me another school she had applied for had over 3000 "waitlisted" applications for 100 places. Surely on that scale its just right out fraud - no name of said school mentioned I might add! KDHA should put a cap on the number of waitlist places permitted for each year. It's just getting out of hand, and looks like a big money maker at the expense of us poor stressed out parents and our kids education chances on the line. This is absolutely crazy. When i was applying for schools most of the ones that had a waiting list advised not to apply if the list was quite long. That was the case with Star international, JAPS, Gems World Academy and a few others. Based on this I can say that most of the schools have common sense, except the few greedy ones.

90 k for FS1??!! Did anyone visit the school? what facilities do they offer to justify those fees? I don't know about FS1 but for Y3, your kid will have to sit for a 3 hours assessment. Small class, less than 10. Well, how many parents can afford 90K anyway? The Head Teacher is accessible even at drop off time .... and there are even coffee/tea and cakes for parents ;-) Ooooohhh, so for 90K you get coffee/tea and cakes. That makes sense then. :\: :):):)

Same thing has happened to us, we were told there were places available for VH going into first year of school and "we encourage you to apply" . Did the assessment, no problems or suggestions of anything out of place. They also said there was only a handful on the waiting list for our second child and she would most likely get in too So we have forked out AED 1600 on that basis and all for nothing. They did not even bother to write and tell us we did not get a place, we had to ring and find out ourselves. And then they got all shirty about it when we asked them why and said we were never guaranteed a place ( sorry lads but if you say there are places , take our money on that basis, and then tell us there were 50 more applicants than actual places, you are misleading your punters). Based on their statements to us we did not even register the kids anywhere else. Now we don't know what to do. Anyway maybe someone is looking out for us. Having seen the way these people have treated us we may have been lucky to miss out after all Goopies, where do you live? Try gems wellington al khail or gems international al khail.

Well I e-mailed this morning and have been promised that they will get back to me either end of day today or tomorrow. I know it is extremely frustrating but I think we will have to give them a chance it is their first year of opening and the first time they have had to deal with the hundreds of FS1 applications most schools have to! KHDA should be blamed they need to put some rules in place here and have deadlines when schools have to give offers. The schools admission process here is frustrating - us parents have months of stress if not years and out of pocket too with all these registration fees This school was the only one that charged an assessment fee, so they have no excuse, as surely they should have hired extra staff to deal with all the process.

At least you've had some sort of decision. We're still hanging on for an answer either way. Managed to speak to someone this morning to chase up the decision as we were also told we would know by 23rd, who informed all of the admissions staff were in meetings going through the 180 applications for fs1 still, and some had been informed and others would have to wait until end of day today... 4 o'clock now. Still no news. Extremely frustrated with the whole administration at this school but hear nothing but good on the actual education side! Patiently fuming. whatever you do, do not call and complain if you want the place. I am pretty sure I got rejected because of my call to the admin yesterday!

A few years back, I was told by my DD's school that they had places so I paid the 500 dirham fee and she was assessed. After she passed the assessment, I was told that there were no places. I was really peeved and put up a stink about it. I would not have paid just to be wait listed. A letter was sent to the principal. The next day, I had a call saying that a place had opened up for her and she started immediately. So I learned at that time that it is best to speak up. If I had sat back quietly, she may have never gotten a place at all. I intend to write an email to the principal , but honestly I do not want my child in that school anymore. I would not be able to take this attitude from the school on day to day basis.. edited by Eli1979 on 23/02/2014

Eli1979, you may have a case for lodging a complaint with KHDA about the assessment process. I'm sure they have rules for that. I also know that they do take complaints seriously and follow up with the school. The fact that the school missed sending the invitation is the first issue and then did not give you a reply by the promised date. Both are unacceptable, and I'm sure KHDA will see it that way too. Thank you rawla, I will definitively check with KHDA

OP I do sympathise - we are not yet at the stage of assessments and already I want to tear my hear out with frustration. I mean, paying to be on a wait list - is just ridiculous! When they accept more people than they have spaces for anyway! Ugh. I hope you get a great place for your child - one of the most worrying and difficult things about being an expat here I think. huh, I was not aware they actually make you pay for being on the waiting list! I agree, that is plain ridiculous! edited by Eli1979 on 23/02/2014

Sorry OP that they made a mistake regarding informing you about the assessment. The rest however, sounds like the overall school applications process here tho. Deposits and payments left and right. If you had been offered a place, most schools charge to "hold" the place, usually the first term's fees! I don't think it is any reflection on the school however, and I've heard it is very good. 3 of the schools I have applied for took 3 days max to make an offer. victory heights promised 18 days so I was counting on that. ! 18 days later still they say they are not ready. is that the norm ? ? well in my experience yes - i've been told by a certain British school to keep checking their website daily since October for "news" of them opening their waitlist! They won't inform us when it opens, (those who have registered an interest) but to keep checking. I feel like I am trying to get a table at some ridiculous restaurant - basically treated like a total mug. Has totes put me off the school! TDB, I know which school you are talking about, but that is a totally different situation, as they are not sure if the school will be ready or not. I am talking about having done an assessment and not having been accepted or rejected for 3 weeks. That is really annoying as most of the schools are offering places now and in order to secure it one have to pay the deposit which is in the range of 3-4 thousand dirhams if not more. VH was my preferred school for various reasons, so I did not want to go ahead and throw 4000 dirhams out of the window if I was going to get a place there.. sorry, just trying to explain my frustration.. dolleymadison, what is the name of the new GEMS school you are talking about? I think it's going to be Gems Millennium School or something like that. It is the building behind Spinneys in Motor City. It won't be small like Victory Heights but is going to have fabulous facilities. great, thanks for that , I will check them out.. We just moved to the Green Community and all the schools I have previously applied for and have been offered places at are now very very far. I do not see myself driving all the way to DESS, so I would love to get a [b'>good[/b'> school closer to our new home. I am not sure what other options do I have in this area..

They told us they did something like 180 assessments for 70 places when we asked if we should register. Maybe that's the trouble? No wonder then! They never told us that! Disgusting money making way. Out of all the schools we have applied , that was the only one charging for the assessment, and still they did not manage to get the process right. I am so angry now. When I called the first time they told me they cannot let me know earlier as they did not process the file , yet after I dared to complain about the delay they immediately mailed me the rejection. I am happy my son will not be going to such a school now, but I am not happy at all for paying 800 dirhams and be treated like this. I have no words.

Ikea has lots of different sizes. Maybe you can try them. The costs are usually in the doors though, cabinets are dead cheap. Could you do it 59/50 with the landlord? We did and he was very happy to cooperate as it increased the value of his property. I've checked ikea but unfortunatelly they do not fit my cabinets:(. Your landlord sounds reasonable, i doubt ours would agree to anything :).
