So do you pay any more for minutes and texts? I don't know why I can't connect to my wifi, my phone picks it up, but when I try to connect it always fails I have a pay as you go package with my BB. I pay AED 49 per month and can ONLY access the internet via wifi, when not on wifi I can not use the internet. I have Whatsapp on my phone, downloaded from the App World button on my BB, it is very easy, there is a small one off charge, but it is worth it, you can be in free wifi contact with your friends on Apple or Samsung phones! When first setting up the wifi on the phone it has some issues, look it up on crackberry or just type issue into google and you could have your solution. Alternatively, restart your internet box and see if that works!

could I get a copy of your list please :) Moms with maids/nannies, we would like to make an internal agreement between the maid/nanny that we are about to sponsor (besides the unified employment agreement for domestic workers and sponsor ) listing duties, dooes and donts etc, does any of you have a sample that you do not mind to share, or know good sample to download? It would be a time saver..thank you I don't have an internal agreement as such, but I do have a thorough list of rules and expectations that my MIL drew up for me (she has 30 years experience with Maid) It covers everything from working for another family (not allowed) to not smacking the children to personal hygiene and even when and where to wash their clothes. Obviously it is not legally binding and I would never bet my life that my Maid sticks to it, but at least it is very clear to her what I expect and what is important to me. Let me know if you want a copy

Bad breath isn't always about not brushing or flossing properly. It could also be caused by internal problems, so maybe see a doctor and find out? Absolutely digestion starts in the mouth so bad breath is often a sign of digestive issues.

What about a desert safari - my kids always love that. We usually go with Adventure Plus, Mr Amin 050 7557596 - he is fun and usually gives the kids a great time. Also my kids love the desert park in Sharjah - always a great day out. The Al Ain zoo is also terrific for kids and the weather is great now - not too hot to walk around the zoo. Thanks for those ideas ..might not do them this weekend but its half term..so will probably check out a few of those.

I agree with everyone else, you need to get some bloods done first to get a full picture. Now with regard to vitamin D. I was diagnosed with very low vit d a few years back, when I was in UK and it was winter. Now, the liver processes vit d from sunlight - this is the most effective way, supplements are pretty much ineffective and there is a huge body of evidence to substantiate this. If results show you are vit d defcient the best way for you is to go on a sunbed, twice a week for 5 mins each time. People will tell you this can cause skin cancer, but if your body requires vit d, it will use the uva/uvb provided by the beds appropriatly. Like I said I was vit d deficient, in UK in winter, didn't want to take supplements, so went on the sunbed after 3 months on sunbed, my vit d was now above avergage, felt much better and GP was very surprised.

which school does your DH go to? We've been here 4 weeks and i've found my year 7 daughter has made friends easier than year 4 daughter. I had worried more about the older one and had thought the primary age one would find it easier. I now realise that many of the year 7's girls didn't know anyone at the high school and are more likely to take ownership of their friends and arrange their own play dates. My younger DH is one of only 2 or 3 new girls in her class so friendships are well established and with the huge travel distances it isn't so easy to arrange play dates the way one would in the UK. One suggestion would be to find your class rep mother and ask her if any kids in your DH's class live near you. Mine go to a free surf club on a Fri morning and are beginning to make friends that way. I've been expat several times and def 3 to 6 months is the hardest - novelty has worn off and reality sinks in. I'm all over the city - one at DESS and one at DESC and living near motor City so if you would like to meet for a coffee let me know..I can pretty much meet anywhere. I like the sound of the free surf club...I will try that on Friday Morning, that would a good fun activity for the girls...let me know where please. and yes would love to meet for a coffee. elkaiduk at gmail dot com

I thought this was interesting, the lady who wrote this is in Saudi, but I guess (some of it) could apply to us over here in Dubai. [u'>The Five Stages of Culture shock[/u'> Stage 1-the Honeymoon stage This is when you first arrive and everything seems so wonderfully different, exotic even, and you want to experience and explore your surroundings. It’s the same feeling people have when they are on vacation. This phase usually lasts up to 2 months. Stage 2- the Distress stage You start feeling confused, and things don’t seem exciting and new anymore. You start to miss home and familiar things. The new culture starts to feel frustrating. Stage 3- Withdrawal stage In this stage you start feeling more hostile toward the new culture, the people and the environment. You see faults everywhere; you criticize and mock everything. People start comparing everything to their own “superior” culture, refusing to accept the differences they encounter. One might find the behavior of the locals “backward”, and unpredictable. At this stage you start to feel anxious and withdraw and isolate yourself. Stage 4-Autonomy stage You start coping better with the culture and problems you face, it has become more understandable and tolerable. You feel less isolated because you have started interacting more with locals. This is the first step to acceptance. Stage 5- Independence stage You start to feel comfortable and confident in your surroundings. You embrace the culture and even start preferring some traits from it rather than your own. You might have adapted some of the local traditions, while still feeling yourself. It feels like this is your new home away from home. From here (actually this blog is fascinating if you get chance to read it) http://blueabaya.blogspot.com/2010/04/culture-shock.html edited by Alismum on 01/10/2012 Well I'm at Stage 3!

Time to get some more flowers for garden to make the house more cheerful! [url=http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons.php'>[img'>http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons/emoticon-object-027.gif[/img'>[/url'> Would you like us to name some groups that go out camping, exploring and driving that you and DD can join? Come and embrace UAE - you'll find more cheery faces somewhere out here. Ignore the grumpy faces - [b'>[i'>ain't worth our time complaining about[/i'>[/b'>! Just [url=http://media-cache-lt0.pinterest.com/upload/391039180114777991_qXpp8nxU.jpg'>smile[/url'> at them nevertheless. Don't be sad.... do try to keep finding groups with people whom you are able to connect more easily and take advantage of the cooler weather that's is coming your way :o) I would love that, for me I am not a shopper hollic, I don't enjoy the shopping malls, but I think getting out and camping or just day trips to the dunes or beach would really cheer us up...we haven't got a jeep yet so going to the desert maybe tricky....but yes please name some groups :)

if you mean for the uk, it's really hard to become non-dom, you have to have absolutely no intention of going back and cut all ties, it's not easy at all. - from my tax exams back in the day buying a funeral plot overseas can help :) you can become non-resident and non-ordinarily resident which exempts you from paying uk tax on your overseas income. Ahh I see, ok I didn't realise non-dom meant never going back and cutting all ties...so no this is not what I am after, I am interested in non-resident and non-ordinarily resident....and the various tax exemptions...as we rent properties back in the UK, so can you point me in the right direction of getting some info on this please..

I'm not speaking from a fitness or weight loss perspective, but yes, fasting 2 days a week is healthy. But what kind of fast are you talking about? Totally abstaining from any food and drink or are you planning to have water/juice? The most effective way is to not have anything at all during the day. Have a meal early morning, and then again in the evening (the Islamic way of fasting, we are recommended also to fast 2 days a week, Monday and Thursday to be precise:)) Marroosh, that's interesting does the Quran suggest fasting two days a week, what does it say the benefits of this are? I mean what is the reason behind it? The Quran never ceases to amaze to me... Its a Hadeeth; Prophet Mohammed used to fast on Mondays and Thursdays.

No, your body needs to be able to rid itself of toxins, and can't do that if you continue to continue. So ever now and then your body needs to be deprived so it can use the reserves and clean out your system. It is important though that you don't over eat when breaking your fast. It's not a single solution to a healthy life style, you should indeed eat healthy, but fasting is def not unhealthy. Too add to Marroosh's comments, the idea (and this ancient by the way) is that the digestive system uses up so much energy, when we fast we give our body a rest so it can divert energy on healing other parts of the body as well as giving the body an opportunity to rest from a constant barrage of toxins from food. There are cases of people fasting and curing themselves of many dieases and cancer even...TrueNorth Centre in Calafornia is a fasting retreat. Short fasts can be beneficial to ones health. But I wouldn't use it as a long term weight loss plan.

BNI is the biggest in the region I think. They have chapters all over Dubai so you can easily find one near you. Also heels and deals are exclusively ladies who are business owners/entrepreneurs. You can go to both meetings without joining, you just need to be invited to BNI by a member (this is easy, I can get you an invite) or register on line for the next heels and deals event. The British Business council also has frequent meetings and easy to network, again no joining necessary. Also this is not just for Brits. oh that's great, I knew this existed here in Dubai but couldn't find it on google. Would really appreciate an invite

and if your residents' visa is cancelled am I correct in understanding you only have 30 days to leave? Well 30 days in which to either leave or get another sponsorship and a new visa. If not you get charge over stay. ah I see, well 30 days is ok to organise shippers, transfer money out etc... what happens to loans? There must have been lots of people with car loans when the recession hit ? what happened to the banks here? so what happens to any money left in the account? if your company tells teh bank when you are sacked they can / will put a ban on you - so your 30 days can turn into ASAP..... that's why some leave urgently

There is at Gems Wellington Sheik Zayed, Rd, run by mums who are of course away. Im not sure though if you went to reception and asked there if they would open it for you and sell you things. As for GEMSDSO you have to ask the school themselves. Ok Thanks...have already sent the school an email, but an an impatient kinda gal :)
